FANDOM NAME: Uplift Saga - David Brin
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: The setting is super hilariously tropey in an "all the tropes rolled into one, including the kitchen sink" way (five different means of FTL travel!), and the key concept is that all species except humans have been uplifted into sentience through selective breeding by an older race. It has every type of alien one can imagine, oxygen and hydrogen breathers alike, lots of modes of sentience, bioengineering, and sentient dolphins who communicate via haikus!
(My requests will be mostly based on Startide Rising.)

FANDOM NAME: The Tay Bridge Disaster, William McGonagall

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Victorian disaster porn by the worst poet in the English language. It has to be read aloud (Scotch accent optional) to be fully appreciated. He is utterly incompetent at meter and strains the limits of syntax to make the most banal and predictable rhymes. But, you ask, does it have Victorian bathos? Yes, it does -- in spades AND the trump suit. Does it have a moralizing conclusion? Yes, the clunkiest moral to ever thud an ending (don't drop it on your foot).

There's plenty of good characters to work with, too: aside from the Train itself, there's the Storm Fiend, any number of Passengers, and a Sensible Person.

WHERE CAN I FIND IT?: The McGonagall Online site has the complete text and background information, as well as his two other poems about the bridge, The Railway Bridge of the Silvery Tay and An Address to the New Tay Bridge, which bookend this to form an inadvertent trilogy

FANDOM NAME: Murder Rooms: The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: it's a ridiculously iddy Sherlockian miniseries about young woobie!Arthur Conan Doyle working with his teacher, mentor, and surrogate father Dr Joseph Bell. Features tons of angst and hurt/comfort between repressed Victorians who don't quite manage to repress themselves. Lots of potential for shippiness, too, if one is so inclined. Last episode has a delightful antagonistic relationship. Also, costume porn everywhere.
WHERE CAN I FIND IT?(optional): contact me at visiblepancake at gmail dot com. If you use a sock account, I won't even know who you are ;> I have the entire canon in my possession. It's also theoretically available as a DVD on Amazon, but I've heard the quality of that is dubious.

FANDOM NAME Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi | Sunday Without God

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Do you like post-apocalyptic stories that are both hopeful and melancholy? Are you interested in stories about journeys and family? Then come follow twelve-year-old gravekeeper Ai on her quest to help others and make new friends to be part of her family!

WHERE CAN I FIND IT? Crunchyroll! It's twelve episodes with a bonus episode on the BD/DVD set. The series is very beautiful, and you can see that beauty for yourself in the opening!

FANDOM NAME: Stray Little Devil

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Do you like portal fantasy? What about worlds split between devils and angels, and the human protagonist suddenly finds herself transformed into a devil? That's the fate of Pam Akumachi, who decides to train hard in hopes of finding a way home, and eventually her relationship with snobbish angel Linfa blossoms into surprise canon yuri!

WHERE CAN I FIND IT? The manga is five volumes, but while the English release is out-of-print, used copies aren't hard to find, and your library network may be useful too. Oh, and that canon f/f? Have a picture of Pam's and Linfa's wedding!

----------
FANDOM NAME: Venus Versus Virus

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Do you like urban fantasy with female protagonists? What about an eyepatch-wearing beauty teaming up with a normal schoolgirl with strange berserker powers and taking down zombie-like ghosts called "Viruses"? Lucia and Sumire make a great team, and there's plenty of action and femslashy subtext to be had.

WHERE CAN I FIND IT? The twelve-episode anime can be watched on Funimation, and the manga is eight volumes. Again, while the English release is out-of-print, used copies aren't hard to find, and it was recently re-released digitally. And for more femslashy goodness, check out the opening here!

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: It's a webseries! (Total video time about 90 minutes in all, so nice and short.) It's like hacking meets The Fugitive! It stars Missy Peregrym of Stick It and Rookie Blue fame! (who totally kicks butt) It has a really awesome trailer! (go here if you can't watch the trailer due to geographic location restrictions)

WHERE CAN I FIND IT?: You can buy it on Amazon or eBay for Region 1. If you're in another part of the world and can't do Region 1, then try here and here for the webisodes. (Unzip both to the same folder.) Or here for an edited-into-single-film version. If you want to see it but need a different file hoster, let me know which file(s) and hoster you need, and I'll try to get that uploaded right away. I'm a little overexcited so this is not a very short comment but small fandoms! my life!

FANDOM NAME: Marco Polo
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Period piece not set in Europe, for one (it's about Marco Polo in the court of Kublai Khan, but really mostly about the court of Kublai Khan). Lots of beautiful people and good ships, including one briefly canon f/f ship and a lot of slashy subtext between Prince Jingim and Marco himself. And a lot of moral crises and political intrigue.
WHERE CAN I FIND IT?(optional): Netflix.

FANDOM NAME: Kado: The Right Answer
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Mostly the really slashy alien/human ship? It has two main moods--cheerful exploration of "what would happen if a really powerful alien met humanity?" and dark yandere stuff, and frankly I'd love to see more dark fic for it but it lends itself well enough to lighter pieces as well.
WHERE CAN I FIND IT?(optional):Crunchyroll, or wherever you watch your anime.

FANDOM NAME: Kakegurui
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Insane gambling shenanigans at one of those unbelievable high schools paired with a ton of les yay. (...it can be kind of male-gazey but I think it's worth it for the femslashiness.)
WHERE CAN I FIND IT?(optional): Netflix

FANDOM NAME: Two Faces of January
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Well, the novel version is by Patricia Highsmith, who also wrote the novel version of Carol (The Price of Salt), and it's very suspenseful. I mostly enjoyed the movie version for Oscar Isaac and Viggo Mortensen playing mind games.
WHERE CAN I FIND IT?(optional): I watched and read it via Hoopla Digital, but at least the book is common enough that I bet you could get it through a library.

FANDOM NAME: The Alpennia series by Heather Rose Jones
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: It's basically a series of lesbian fantasy books set in a sort of regency setting. Very plotty, also lots of femslash and an interesting magic system. I've only read the first book and I already recommend it without qualms so yeah, it's good. (and if you only read the first book, I would still write fic for you.)
WHERE CAN I FIND IT?(optional): Library possibly, or if not Amazon or Ebay.

FANDOM NAME: The Tom Corbett, Space Cadet series by Carey Rockwell
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: 1950s space adventures written for kids, as optimistic and squeaky-clean as you would imagine! Light comfort reading with really fun characters and also a lot of possible ships available. If you want some low-key optimistic sci-fi to read, this series is a great choice and all the books are bite-sized. (There's also a TV show, but it has not aged half as well.)
WHERE CAN I FIND IT?(optional): All but one of the books in the series are free on Project Gutenberg! (The last one is apparently a team change-up, so it has less to do with the rest of the series.) WHERE CAN I FIND IT?(optional): Available for pay-rental through the usual streaming suspects and library copies should also be easy to find.

FANDOM NAME: Social Creature, by Tara Isabella Burton
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: It's a clever, unnerving The Talented Mr. Ripley homage, but with women, social media, and a glamorous New York party scene. Tons of dark f/f shipping potential, including some canonical fingering during an opera.
WHERE CAN I FIND IT?(optional): Widely available digitally and in print, and it was on my library's Overdrive system and so might be an easy digital loan, too.

[personal profile] bethynyc 2018-09-06 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
FANDOM NAME: THE BOYS IN THE BAND by Mart Crowley, Broadway 2018 production

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: The text. The cast. The fact that this 50 year old play finally got a Broadway run, with a cast of all out gay men. Funny and heartbreaking in so many ways. Absolutely showed the power of these actors.

WHERE CAN I FIND IT?(optional): Sadly, the show closed August 11th. I'm hoping there are Yuletide writers who saw it during the brief run. I'd love to see a movie version like they did of THE NORMAL HEART, but that does not exist.

Here's the website, which has pictures!: http://boysintheband.com/

The 1970 movie has the original Off-Broadway cast from 1968, and though it doesn't have these actors, it is the reason why I wanted to see the show when I first heard about it. It is available on DVD. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065488/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Drama Book Shop has the script: https://www.dramabookshop.com/book/9780573640049

PHANTOM THREAD (2017)

[personal profile] minebyrights 2018-09-06 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
FANDOM NAME: Phantom Thread (2017) TRAILER

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Lads, ladies, and lollipops, this is that prestige Paul Thomas Anderson film you saw previews for, with Daniel Day Lewis being an Asshole Brooding Genius and emotionally abusing his girlfriend, and went "lol nope not that shit yet again." This is indeed a tale of Daniel Day Lewis being an asshole brooding genius couture dress designer in circa 1955 London, too self-involved to even bother to break up with his own girlfriends/muses once he gets bored with them. He leaves that to his sister, Big Dick Energy champion and eternal spinster Lesley Manville, who runs the business side of the entire fashion house and enables DDL's nonsense so long as it doesn't hurt the bottom line. And then DDL one day sees the apparently very innocent and naive immigrant Vicky Krieps, insta-falls in fascination with her, and begins to use her as his doll/fuck with her head/etc. A very staid traditional period piece indeed—

—until it isn't. Oh, the exquisite cinematography and Oscar-winning period costumes never change, the award-nominated score never gets less swoony and sweeping, but good lord, this film goes to some absurd, bizarre places. Too much detail is a spoiler, but suffice it to say that Vicky Krieps is made of much sterner stuff than she initially appears, Lesley Manville gives absolutely withering line readings, and the entire thing takes on a darkly comedic edge. It's part deeply black period comedy, part twisted romance, part psychological horror/almost ghost story/dark fairy tale, part "what in the hell goes on at breakfast over there," part folie a deux, and (albeit likely somewhat accidentally) a surprisingly interesting, at least partially self-aware airing out of toxic heterosexual nonsense. And Film Twitter (tm) has produced a number of memes on it because it's a shockingly absurd, quotable, and memeable film wrapped up in the appearance of a boring Masterpiece Theater-esque thing.

It has emotional/psychological abuse of all sorts up the wazoo, and if you have certain food issues it may not be for you? (Googling the "big twist" involved will give more details; I actually went into the film knowing the twist and still fucking loved the ride by the end, but I assume it's also good if you don't know the exact details.) But if you're up for the ride and into this sort of thing, it's expertly crafted and acted, Manville's character is pretty easily read as a big ole 1950s lesbian/hard femme domme [this may just be me being too gay], and I love it. I will absolutely be requesting basically any and all fic involving Cyril (Lesley Manville's character). If you need assistance in deciding she's awesome, there are thinkpieces on why Cyril Woodcock is a boss (contains spoilers).

WHERE CAN I FIND IT?: I don't think it's on Netflix, but it's easily bought/rented at any streaming service you like.

MUM (BBC comedy, 2016-present)

[personal profile] minebyrights 2018-09-06 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
FANDOM NAME: Mum, the BBC sitcom that first aired in 2016 with Lesley Manville and Peter Mullan, written by Stefan Golaszewski

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Okay, Mum is a bit of a weird beast. It's a family sitcom, sort of, but of course this is British comedy we're talking about, so it's got a searing edge to it and many of the characters and interactions involved are actively awkward/embarrassment-inducing in many ways. The set-up is pretty straightforward--Lesley Manville is Cathy, a 59-year-old woman whose husband dies, leaving her with her manchild-ish son, his ditzy girlfriend, her brother and his snobbish girlfriend, her husband's best friend who's desperately trying to cover up how much he's fallen in love with Cathy, and her dead husband's typically old white folk assholish parents. There are two seasons of 6 30-minute episodes each, each episode covering fairly close to what feels like half an hour of "real time," a random day out of Cathy's life in widowhood, and each season covers a year. A third and final season is shooting this fall, to air some time after.

The secondary characters can grate pretty hard, especially early in season 1 before you start to get to know them and the things that make them behave the way they do, and it's a comedy, so it revels in those apparent stereotypes and absurd situations—but then it will also spiral into this weirdly well observed meditation on grief, on family ties, on the lot of women who are expected to just go quietly into the night once they're past the age of 40 and who are quietly but firmly refusing to do so. (It helps that Cathy, said older woman, is basically the only character who isn't actively absurd in one way or another, though you do find yourself wanting her to tell everyone to shut the hell up and get out of her house for 5 seconds.) The writing is pretty intricate and sharp, and the acting is great--most especially Lesley Manville and Peter Mullan, who plays Michael, her and her husband's old best friend. (The slow, slow burn romance between them is almost the platonic ideal of over-50s heterosexual romance, if you're into that, and Michael is pretty wonderful as a love interest--caring but not overprotective or overburdening, with a shared bizarre sense of humor with Cathy, and the show really digs into Cathy's grief and allows her to work through the death of her husband without trying to shove her too quickly into a new romance.) I'll be requesting Cathy and Cathy/Michael shenanigans because I am a complete sucker for Lesley's face and old folks who are horny for one another.

WHERE CAN I FIND IT?: It's a BBC product; it's on Britbox streaming in the US and Canada. (Not sure about in the UK, as I'm not located there.) It's also fairly easy to find on DVD etc. and...other corners of the internet.

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: HEY KIDS HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SCURVY If you like cold-weather horror, men in uniform, major character death, supernatural monsters, canon gay in various (primarily doomed, but not doomed because it's gay) flavors, and Nive Nielsen looking groovy while spooning a weeping man, this miniseries might be relevant to your interests. The basic premise is centered around Sir John Franklin's last doomed expedition in search of the Northwest Passage in the tail-end of the 1840s, and how the crew cope after three years in the ice when the mundane perils they're facing take a suddenly much-weirder turn. This show has a fantastic cast (Jared Harris, Ciaran Hinds, Tobias Menzies, among many many many others) and lots of potential for other types of horror content if the supernatural monster doesn't tickle your fancy -- on a shallow level, it also has a lot of shipping potential if you're okay with all parties in your new OTP getting scruffier and scurvier as the show goes on. (Loyalty kink! Enemies-to-friends-to-lovers! The aforementioned heartbreaking het spooning! Sexually charged, twisted rivalries! Doomed former sweethearts! Age differences and meaningful gifts of books!)
WHERE CAN I FIND IT?(optional): The Terror is currently available for purchase in various formats -- if you've already seen a few episodes and enjoy it, I'd rec the DVD/Blu-Ray just for the sole reason of subtitles.
(Content notes: major character death, violence, bullshit Victorian imperialism, anti-Inuit racism, major illnesses, suicide, 19th century Royal Navy homophobia, corporal punishment, starvation, cannibalism. If you want episode-by-episode notes, let me know.)

My fandoms

(Anonymous) 2018-09-06 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not terribly good at getting people hype for things, but I might as well try. Since I know what I'll be nominating I might as well do them all at once.

FANDOM NAME: Wakfu
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: I'm a sucker for cartoons and this French series is wonderful. It's a silly, fun, setting with a great sense of humor and great characters. Oh, and it's beautifully animated. Really, it was the style that caught my eye and got me started watching.
WHERE CAN I FIND IT?: Last time I checked it was on Netflix.

FANDOM NAME: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (trilogy)
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Classic platformer videogame. This was one of the videogame series that let me survive college. The first game is generally regarded as the best, but I loved them all (I have a special spot in my heart for the second and third games, though if you're only going to play/watch a let's play of one, do it for the first). I'm torn as to whether I should try to get you hype for the gameplay - it's such a fun platformer and the mechanics are awesome - missed a jump? ran into a hazard? no worries, just rewind time and try again. But yeah, you're not here for game recommendations (unless you are, in which case let me know and I can give you a list of favorites of mine across different genres!), you're here to write fics or draw some fanart. The characters are what makes this game so good. The Prince is wonderfully arrogant, but there's a delightful sense of humor to it (game over and the comments he makes are great), Farah is a great foil to him and the way their relationship is developed through the course of the game is surprisingly well written. I'm not going to spoil the end for you, but after the events of the game it's a punch right in the feels, in the best way. Roll credits, ending music plays, and I cry my eyes out. And that's just me ranting about what I love about the first game. The other two I have even more reasons to love.
WHERE CAN I FIND IT?: The games are available on Steam and the Xbox marketplace if you really want to buy it on my word for how awesome it is. Otherwise there are playthroughs available on YouTube.

FANDOM NAME: Prototype
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Another videogame here, one I request in just about every exchange I'm in. So first, to get it out of the way, I love the gameplay. At its heart it's a stupid-fun, over-the-top powerfantasy of a game. I love the overall look of it, especially the shape shifting powers you get over the course of the game. The monsters are few and repetitive, but they're great, and even if the main character, Alex Mercer, has a pretty meh character design (and meh is probably giving him too much credit, though your mileage may vary - there are people who think how he looks is pretty much the coolest thing ever, so what do I know?) It's quite light on story, basically it's there to give a reason for Alex to go on his rampage of revenge, but the little bits there are give you way too much to think about. An unreliable narrator, biased and often often contradictory tidbits of information, implications that have taken the fandom years to realize were never stated outright at any point during the game.

There's a second Prototype game as well, but it's polarizing and pretty much divided the fandom. I enjoyed it a great deal and will discuss reasons why if you want, but will not do so here in the interest of keeping things civil.
WHERE CAN I FIND IT?(optional): If you want, you can buy the game easily enough, but there are plenty of playthroughs on YouTube, as well as several great compilations/transcripts out there.

FANDOM NAME: Hardcore Henry
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: It's a movie in the style of a first person videogame and it captures that feel perfectly. If it were a game, despite me not liking first person games I'd totally play it. If you like action movies, I'd totally recommend this to you. It's scifi, very near future and low key in those aspects, but they're why I'm nominating this movie. That and the villain. Akan is great and, though his plan to create an army of cybernetic soldiers is explained, pretty much nothing else is, which is what makes him so much fun. So yeah, it's light on plot, heavy on crazy action, all the characters are over the top, and that's why I love it.
WHERE CAN I FIND IT?: Last time I checked it was on Netflix.

And yes, I know I mentioned four fandoms when I can only nominate three, but a friend of mine will be nominating Prototype and I know I'll be asking for it so I figured that I might as well mention it.

FANDOM NAME: The Hollow (TV Series)

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Okay. So. I loved this series right up until the end of the first (only available) season. It begins with three teenagers waking up in a locked, featureless room with no memory and discovering they may or may not have abilities which help them get out. So right off the bat we have superpowers and amnesia, two great tropes that go great together.

I loved all the characters, and was fascinated by the directions things went. The expected romance wasn't. The friendship was important. The powers were interesting. The path of discovery as they went along kept me intrigued. Honestly, the only thing not to like is the ending.

If you like shows built around gaming, mystery, amnesia, heroes, squabbles between parties, etc. you will enjoy this. Me, I am desperate for future/fix-it fic!

WHERE CAN I FIND IT?(optional): It's a Netflix Original.

I was thinking to nominate this one. I really enjoyed it. Just, like you, not the ending. I hadn't narrowed down characters yet because I adore the three main characters and their interactions but am also very curious about the opposition team.

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: It's two seasons (24 eps) of a show that blends A- and B-plots very very well. There's emotional issues, government mistrust, realistic characters, plot threads that raise questions as they answer others, and moral quandaries served up in subtle ways. There's multiple female characters who have multiple conversations about things other than men! (Several scenes in the second season have three or four women in the same scene.) There's also diversity in both ethnicity and neurology - Malik Yoba plays the one trained law enforcement agent, and Azita Ghanizada plays a daughter of Iranian immigrants, plus Ryan Cartwright portrays a young man with high-functioning autism, and all comments I've seen online note that his portrayal is the best they've ever seen on TV. The show is sometimes compared to X-Men or Heroes but is much more down-to-earth, with real people who just happen to have extraordinary abilities (which often have downsides), as well as ordinary problems such as anger management issues, difficulty with assertiveness, getting along with coworkers, etc.

WHERE CAN I FIND IT?: Amazon or eBay have it. It's not on Netflix, unfortunately - don't know where else you would be able to track it down. (It is available on torrents if you know where to look and need that option.)

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Just the best crime-fighting team in 1896 New York City! Based off the book by Caleb Carr, it's about Laszlo Kreizler, an early criminal psychologist and his crew of misfits trying to solve the murders of boy prostitutes by a serial killer before serial killers were a thing.

There are some significant character relationship changes in the show from the book, and since I'm an utter romantic, I am working off the show, not the novel.

So the band of Misfits are:

Laszlo Kreizler, who is way ahead of his time in criminal profiling and just about everything else, including sexuality, child psychology, and equality between genders. He runs a school for children who have experienced psychological trauma and have a difficult time functioning in society.

John Moore, Laszlo's Harvard chum, who is just the dearest man with the biggest heart who often comes off as pompous and a bit traditional. He's had his heart broken and drinks a lot.

Sara Howard, who is the first woman to work for the police department under the Police Commissioner, Theodore Roosevelt (yes, that Teddy Roosevelt), who doesn't let anything stop her from her goals, including her friend and old neighbor, John trying to protect her.

Marcus and Lucious Isaacson, twin brothers who are Jewish, and scientists, and are mostly despised by the predominantly Irish-Catholic police department.

I admit I am here primarily for Sara/John because I just adore them together. But there is plenty of other shippy pairs if that doesn't strike your fancy. I mean...just look at these two:

WHERE CAN I FIND IT? As a podcast, it is available on multiple forums! The main website is here. It can be found on spreaker and itunes.
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT? It's an atmospheric and moody mystery podcast set on a research vessel where people keep disappearing that features canonically queer characters and multiple characters of color voiced by actual actors of color. It's part of the Procyon Podcast Network (which also produced the Strange Case of Starship Iris and Under Pressure) and the characters are all interesting and well-written, the sound design is perfect, and the plot is compelling. (I was very genuinely spooked while listening, particularly when the show starts to delve into the question of memories -- it's not just people who are disappearing on the boat!) The first season is all released so you can binge all the episodes.

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: One-season show of 13 eps—doesn't take that long to watch! A cop show that stars Angie Harmon (shot a few years before Rizzoli & Isles began). Four women who have real friendships with each other (i.e. every ep passes the Bechdel test *easily*) and who work together to fight crime! Humor, drama, character-driven storylines with serialization.

WHERE CAN I FIND IT?: Youtube has all 13 eps. You can buy a DVD-R set of it on Amazon but it's not professionally produced the way it should be, so you're probably better off just grabbing it from Youtube or torrents.
