Unfortunately, not on UK Netflix - I really liked this movie when it came out. I came away with very strong feelings about the central pairing and Mark Strong (in general) however, no dice. :(

Wow. This game deserves its own fic prompt community. Like a Dixit Bingo.

Ahhh!! I can't wait either! I feel like I *need* a fandom for this series. I have so many feels and nowhere to put them.

But really, I'm thrilled that you're planning to read it and I really, really hope you love it.

The Adjustment Bureau

[personal profile] gwyn 2017-09-15 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom/Canon Name: The Adjustment Bureau (on AO3 it's missing the The in the title, I wish that could be fixed but…)

What's awesome about it: First up, it's a terribly romantic movie starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, loosely based on a story by Phillip K. Dick, so there's also some thriller/SF-esque qualities to it and a lot of examinations of fate and self-discovery and self-will. Everyone's great in it (though it's a very Hollywood movie: hardly any women, mostly white men). But it also has a standout performance by Anthony Mackie as one of the Adjustment Bureau's timeline adjusters, who gets involved with Damon's and Blunt's lives when he makes a small mistake that snowballs. There are also other great performances from John Slattery and Terence Stamp, and a terrific soundtrack. Also: HATS

There are all kinds of possibilities for ships (as well as gen), including the main het one, but also slash with Damon's character and Mackie's character--they have definite chemistry together. Mackie's Harry Mitchell is sweet and mysterious and so, so handsome and he made me melt. He totally made the movie for me, although I really loved the sweeping romance of the main plot with Damon and Blunt, the sinister and metaphysical stuff with the Adjusters, and the overall look of the movie, which was lovingly filmed in New York.

I've been telling people for years that I wish someone would write a story where Anthony Mackie's character in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson, was basically his character from The Adjustment Bureau, but he didn't know it, only gradully realizing that he used to be a sort of immortal being (some people call them angels) through the events of Cap2. Because Anthony Mackie is an absolute treasure in both films, and I think there should be some kind of crossover fic linking these two characters played by this magnificent actor. Some of my friends, who hadn't even heard of the movie before I started talking about it, encouraged me to start whipping up enthusiasm for it, and the best way is through Yuletide, so I'm giving it a try!

There's very little fic for the movie--most of the 15 results on AO3 are crossovers or AUs, and only a few feature Harry Mitchell. This is a great premise for a film, and while it's got its flaws, it's still fantastic and fun and romantic, and it deserves more fic!

Where to find: Unfortunately it's not streaming for free anywhere, but you can rent it through a number of different streaming apps, including Amazon and iTunes. It shows up on TNT, I think, in the US from time to time on broadcast. I'm thinking about trying to rip and post it, if I do I will put it up in my journal so people can see it. I've been informed it's available through less, uh, legal streaming methods, and I'm sure libraries must have the DVD.

You can see some clips and photos on the IMDB page here, though it's so bizarre, they list all these weird cameos first but the main cast is only visible when you click through to see the Full Cast. I don't think any of the clips feature Anthony Mackie, sadly.

I listen to audiobooks and podcasts before bed to let my brain settle down. I just finished re-listening to an audiobook I've listened to a lot before, and this was on iTunes so I thought I'd try it. Now I'm on episode 3 this afternoon!

Really great pacing and I'm so into all the characters. I don't think I'll be caught up enough to feel confident requesting it, but I might put it down as a fandom to offer to write. Definitely keeping an eye on letters for treat-writing.

I think I'll keep myself spoiler-free as long as I can. I'm just, instantly like "oh, a powerful woman elsewhere that the men are calling names and saying she has no right to call herself Queen? And she's sending out spies and assassins to manipulate people and sabotage the empire? Welp, I'm Team Maya." Like her first major political action is to send the severed head of a guy they were gonna send to replace her, and demand the surrender of her enemy, in the first like 10 minutes of the show! What a power move!

White Boots/Skating Shoes

[personal profile] lady_ragnell 2017-09-15 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom/Canon Name: White Boots - Noel Streatfeild (known as Skating Shoes in US editions, but White Boots is the AO3 tag)

What's awesome about it:

With Yuri on Ice so popular, this is a great time for my tiny little figure skating fandom! White Boots/Skating Shoes is a book from the first half of the 20th century about Harriet Johnson, who needs exercise for her health and winds up learning to skate, and Lalla Moore, whose father was a famous figure skater and whose aunt and guardian wants her to become a great one too.

Good if you like:
~Stories about female friendships and found families and families doing what they can for each other (the Johnsons are quite wonderful) and also sometimes families that are not great at being families
~Figure skating, and particularly learning about the beginnings of the sport--these young ladies aren't doing axels and salchows, they are literally skating figures

It's a pretty quick and sweet read--not a five-minute fandom by any means, but a one-day one if you've got time to sit down with a book.

Where to find:

The American version of this book is called Skating Shoes, before anyone from the US goes looking for it. It was just released with a new cover and everything a few years ago, so whatever your usual online book retailer is should have it! There doesn't seem to be an ebook edition in the US, but it looks like Amazon UK might have one under White Boots.

RH Plus

[personal profile] izarith 2017-09-15 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom/Canon Name: RH Plus

What's awesome about it: A slice-of-life-esque j-drama about 4 cute, wholesome vampires living together as a family.

If you do enjoy the found family trope you will most likely love this show, or if you like to see characters overcome their past traumas to be happy. (If you're a vampire fan you might be a bit disappointed, however, as the lore is super vague and at times it's easy to forget that they even are the blood-sucking type.) On a shallower level it's a show full of beautiful boys, several of whom have very shippy interactions with each other. There is definitely a "light BL" vibe to the whole thing, if that's appealing to anyone.

It's also only 13 episodes long (each only ~25 mins.) so it's a quick canon to view.

Where to find: The entire show is available free and legally with English subs on Crunchyroll: http://www.crunchyroll.com/rh-plus

Ancient Pompeii Graffiti

[personal profile] gloria_scott 2017-09-15 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom/Canon Name: Ancient Pompeii Graffiti
What's awesome about it: It's actual graffiti! From Ancient Pompeii! They are tiny bite-sized slices of life from antiquity, often charming, hilarious, and poignant. What I love most about them is that they are pretty much EXACTLY LIKE the stuff that still gets scrawled on walls in this day and age. The more things change blah blah blah. Plus, they offer lots of wide open world- and character-building opportunities.

To wit:
I.7.8 (bar; left of the door); 8162: We two dear men, friends forever, were here.  If you want to know our names, they are Gaius and Aulus.

Truly lifelong friends? Or maybe they were just a couple of drunk dudes who met drunkenly while they were drinking that night.

And:
III.5.1 (House of Pascius Hermes; left of the door); 7716: To the one defecating here.  Beware of the curse.  If you look down on this curse, may you have an angry Jupiter for an enemy.

What the what now? A curse upon defecators, you say? How ever does that work? I certainly would like to know!

Legend of the Five Rings (LCG)

[personal profile] yhlee 2017-09-15 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom/Canon Name: Legend of the Five Rings LCG

What's awesome about it: Do you like fantasy samurai drama with politics, intrigue, dueling, zombie/horror threats, and a canon lesbian romance? Try L5R LCG! While L5R used to have a massive sprawling storyline in its previous incarnation (AEG's CCG/RPG), the Fantasy Flight Games LCG reboot of the storyline not only takes us back to the politics/intrigue roots of the story, it brings us a canon lesbian romance between the Crane Clan Champion and the most beautiful woman in the land of Rokugan, who also happens to belong to the clan that does secrets and skulduggery, as well as a canon bisexual male courtier. Even better, because it was just rebooted this year, the canon consists of a handful of short stories that could be read in their totality in approximately an hour (or less--I'm not a notably fast reader).

Here's Doji Hotaru, Crane Clan Champion:

And here's Bayushi Kachiko (art from the CCG version, not sure if there's LCG-specific art of her yet [1]), most beautiful woman in Rokugan, Hotaru's lover:

Where to find: The first eight stories can be found here as PDFs under the Fiction section; part one of the ninth story (the one with the bisexual male courtier) can be found here.

I love this idea! I see that post circulating tumblr every so often and I love that we can see the little snippets of life from back then, in such an informal way, since we don't get that kind of "man on the street" viewpoint from the rest of history because things simply weren't recorded or preserved.

I have a theory about the constant references to people defecating in doorways. There were public bathrooms in ancient Rome but not all of them were free, some charged to be used. Presumably a lot of people decided to forego that and just do it out of sight sneakily to save themselves some money.

The production values are really amazing, and the story's really well conceived and executed so it's so much fun to listen to because you can get totally immersed in the world and story imo. Honestly, I'm mostly excited to be getting people into this podcast! I only know a couple people that have listened to it, but they haven't had fannish feelings about it.

Then I won't say anything more!
