Y tu mamá también (2001)
What's awesome about it:Ahahahaha! CUTE BOYS KISSING! I thought that would get people's attention... Ahem - the film that is responsible for making stars out of both Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna and landing Alfonso Cuarón the director's chair on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I rediscovered about 13+ years after I first saw it (even though I became a great fan of Cuarón's work), thanks to Rogue One - and I am so damn glad I did!
So - story as y'all can't live on boy kissing alone;) Set in Mexico it revolves around two best friends - Julio (Bernal) and Tenoch (Luna) who have to 'occupy' themselves when their girlfriends go to Europe for the Summer, so they decide to talk Lusia, a married woman they meet at a wedding (keep with it, honestly it's worth it!) into going with on a road trip to a secluded (read: it doesn't exist) beach. Needless to say, shenanigans ensue!
Things that are awesome about this film - it's the farthest thing you can imagine from being a 'sex comedy' as you can get (they were a thing from the early '00s - yes I am old;p) Luisa has her own reasons and motivations for going on this trip - which slowly come to the fore. The friendship between Julio and Tenoch is worth the price of admission alone and one of my reasons for nominating this year as my re-watch made me wonder if there was 'more' that if they had been 'brave' enough to explore after that night at the beach, if they could have been truly happy.
Oh and there is nudity (both genders, although there is far more male nudity than female), sex, boys being crap at sex, realism, a threesome and as I stated at the beginning - boys kissing!
Where to find: I can only speak to the UK, but it is availalble on DVD (cheaply) and Blu Ray - I think it is available via Criterion in the US. As to whether it's available on streaming, I cannot say - I hope so as it's a wonderfully funny film shot through with a little darknes. And well, if you need images: Y tu mamá también (2001) on Tumblr
