Fandoms Brainstorming

The eligibility rules are up: LJ | DW and nominations are just over a week away.

Want to talk about your nomination plans? Find out if other people know your obscure canons? Strategise on the best label for your fandom? You can do it here (or on LJ)!

ETA
-Each person can nominate 3 fandoms and 4 characters per fandom.
-Nominations on AO3 will neither be approved nor visible until after the nominations period. If anyone wants to do some coordinating around that, here might be a good place to put your hand up to say you're interested (but I suggest doing the actual coordinating on another post).

AS always, I am nominating Echte Kerle / Regular Guys an adorable 1996 movie about a macho cop who wakes up after a drunken night in bed with a gay dude and can't remember what happened, and it ends up being a lovely found family movie.

Also, as always, The Champions super old show about three international agents whose abilities become enhanced after a plane crash.

And for the first time New Blood, a, sadly, one season British odd couple cop buddy show, that was so adorable and slashy when it aired last year that I was so convinced it was going to be huge for Yuletide that I didn't even think to nom it, and then it wasn't there. I was sad :( Am just specifying Rash and Stefan, so I have two spots open if anyone wants me to add anyone.

If anyone's still considering what else to nom, I'd also love to see Hogan's Heroes and M.A.S.H.

I'm not 100% sure M.A.S.H. is qualified. I seem to remember trying to nom it last year but it not going through... but I might be mixing it up with another fandom I nommed on the borderline. It has only 700ish stories on AO3, but 2.5k on FFN, but I don't know how many of those are eligible.

BUT...if it is something nom-able, I'll definitely do it. I freakin' love that show! (watching it right now tbh) ♥

M.A.S.H is ineligible, unfortunately. I love writing for it too - my first Yuletide it was eligible and I got lucky and matched on it, but that was the last year for it.

Change of plans and Sagas of Sundry: Dread is covered.

So many things to choose from!

I'm definitely nominating Siberia.

Should I nominate Mr. Right again? I kinda really wanna, looking over my letter the prompts I had last time were ones I still wanna see.

Should I nominate The Cape? What about Turkish historical drama/soap opera Magnificent Century? Or the theater comedy of errors Peter Pan Goes Wrong? Or one of a half dozen music videos with cool worlds introduced and barely explored in a 3 minute song? Or the Wix Superbowl ads with Gal Gadot and Jason Statham and a hapless chef?

"Love It When You Call" by the Feeling is such a great song and such a great video to go with it, I want to know more. The song sounds like it's about a guy opining his lover never calls on the phone. The video is about the FBI wiretapping mobsters and trying to track their calls.

1. Machineries of Empire - Yoon Ha Lee
Shuos Mikodez, Vauhan Istradez, Shuos Zehun, and a fourth player I haven't decided on yet. I am very predictable. Any other Hexarchate fans going to nominate that this year? I could probably be persuaded to use my fourth slot for someone else's fave. If no one does, I might nominate Kel Brezan for the fourth slot on the grounds that of the characters who ever meet the other characters I'm nominating, there's no fic about Brezan yet and there is fic about Kujen and Jedao and Cheris.

2. Riot Nrrd (Webcomic)
Long-dead queer nerd webcomic of my heart. I'm nominating Maria Ortiz, Wren Watanabe, Samantha Jay, and Nhi Nguyen.

3. I really want to nominate Martha Wells' The Murderbot Diaries, and am open to suggestions on what characters to nom for that apart from the protagonist. But if I'm very sure other nominators have Murderbot covered, I'll nominate Ann Leckie's Provenance instead since it has more major characters than one person could nominate. I've read it in ARC, so I know the names of characters who don't appear in the first three chapters, so if someone else has Ingray Aughskold, Tic Uisine, Garal Ket, and Netano Aughskold, I'll nominate Lak Aughskold, Taucris Ithesta, and the Geck Ambassador.

I wrote for Celeste Ng's Everything I Never Told You last year, which I loved and am considering nominating this year. It's set in the American Midwest in the 1970s and is about an interracial Chinese-American and White family dealing with the events leading up to and following their oldest teen daughter's mysterious death by drowning. The troublemaker kid next door, Jack, has tried for years to reach out to and get to know Nath, the family's oldest son (who is adorably in love with space and NASA and who is struggling with the fact that he's always passed over by his parents, who are focused on his sister Lydia's success, even when he gets accepted to Harvard). But Nath thinks Jack dislikes him, and more, he's convinced Jack had something to do with Lydia's death. I dunno if I'm describing it well, but the family dynamic and racism themes are explored in compelling ways, Jack and Nath's relationship is fascinating with a lot of potential (all I can say without spoilers ^^), and the 1970s/historical bit is fun to read and write...

Writing for a novel like that was so fun, I'm thinking my nominations will be book-focused this year...

The Book of Salt by Monique Truong - A novel aboaut a gay man named Binh who leaves Vietnam after his father discovers his relationship with the head chef in a French official's kitchen, works as a galley hand at sea, and then becomes the live-in cook for Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas in Paris in the late 20s/early 30s. The writing in this book is just gorgeous, and Binh has several compelling relationships that could be explored more - with his charming bunkmate at sea, the mysterious man he meets on the bridge in Paris, and Lattimore, one of Gertrude Stein's admirers -

The Folk Keeper by Franny Billingsley - Such a cool YA novel set in a sorta Regency-esque fantasy world that draws on a lot of British, Irish, and Scottish folklore. There are selkies and hill hounds and creatures just called 'folk' that live in caverns underneath towns and estates and destroy crops and generally muck up the affairs of the estate if they are not appeased by the folk keeper - an expert in charms and rituals used to subdue the folk. The heroine Corinna disguises herself as a boy, becomes the folk keeper of her foundling home, and then is swept off to become the folk keeper of huge estate on a lonely island... I love all the folklore and festivals, the sailing and the secrets. Also! I think there's a lot of potential for exploring gender and genderqueer themes and presentations with these characters...oh, and the romance is adorable. <3

I'm torn though because Rita wasn't nominated as an iZombie character last year, and I totally need more Rita/Liv and 'Rita becomes a member of the crew' fic...

Also hoping All the President's Men, The Secret Garden, and The Chyrsalids get nominated again...

These books sound really interesting! *adds to future readings lists*

[personal profile] major_general 2017-09-09 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm probably going to nominate Mercy Street (Jedidiah Foster, Mary Phinney, and then I'm torn on the other two characters), Sophie and the Rising Sun (Sophie Willis, Grover Ohta, Anne Morrison, Salome Whitmore), and The Promise (Mikael Boghosian, Chris Myers, Yeva, Ana Khesarian).

I'm taking a bet that someone will nominate Moonlight, Pitch, and Victoria, but if someone has already nominated the fandoms/characters I planning on nominating, please let me know so I can request different characters or fandoms and give us all more to work with.

It's currently looking like:

Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire - Nancy Whitman, Jack Wolcott, Loriel Youngers, Jill Wolcott
The series consists of two novellas so far, so it's a pretty quick read. The first, Every Heart A Doorway, is a 'what happens next' for portal fantasies. It's set in Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children - a school for the children who travel to magical worlds and then get sent back to somewhere that isn't home any more. Soon after Nancy arrives at the school, tragedy strikes, and she and her schoolmates race to figure out what's happening. The main character is asexual, and one of the supporting characters is trans.
The second, Down Among The Sticks and Bones, is a prequel focussing on twins Jack and Jill and their horror-movie world of The Moors - a world of vampires and mad scientists and a blood-red moon. Don't want to spoil anything, but there's also queer representation.

Red House Mystery by A. A. Milne - Antony Gillingham, Bill Beverly
Did you know that A. A. Milne (yes, Winnie-the-Pooh A. A. Milne) wrote a detective novel? And that it is 1. great, 2. really funny, 3. slashable to an almost ridiculous extent, and 4. freely available on Project Gutenberg? Well, now you do :)
I'd be happy to nominate other characters for the two open slots if anyone has requests.

El Tiempo Entre Costuras - Felix Aranda, Sira Quiroga, Rosalinda Fox
Sira, a seamstress from Madrid, abandons her life and runs off to Morocco with her lover - who naturally turns out to be a cad and leaves her in the lurch. But Sira has pluck and tenacity and makes some truly wonderful friends, all of which combine to help her get back on her feet and start a new life. The Spanish Civil War and then WWII are coming, though - and with them, intrigue and spies and action!
Last slot is open if anyone has requests.

Other things I would love to see nominated:

Whispering Mountain by Joan Aiken - I would so love to see fic about Arabis, but I have a feeling I'm the only person in the world who's read this... It's technically a prequel to the Wolves Chronicles, but even the description on Joan Aiken's official website starts with "sometimes forgotten as part of the Wolves Chronicles"!

Swallows and Amazons series - I'm hoping someone else will nominate this! There's usually more than one of us, Yuletide will feel strange without it... Anyone?

Vexed - mainly got bumped off the almost-positive-definite list of nominations because I got such an awesome fic last year, but it's dear to my heart and I would love to know if someone else is nominating it.

I'm thinking about nominating the Coot Club series because I'd love fic for it. There's so many characters I want, though - Dick and Dorothea, Port and Starboard, the Death and Glories, Tom Dudgeon, Mrs Barrable and William the Pug. How to decide?????
elen_nare: (Default)

[personal profile] elen_nare 2017-09-11 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I would love to see Coot Club folk nominated! I loved Port and Starboard there, I was always a bit disappointed they got sent off to Paris and weren't around for The Big Six (even if I do see how, from a storytelling perspective, having the solicitor's daughters defending the Death and Glories could diminish the 'them against the world' aspect). But then all the others are awesome too...

I'm going to nominate Coot Club with Port, Starboard, Joe from the Death and Glory and William the Pug, and say in my request that any and all of the other characters are more than welcome and see what happens :)

i nominated:
newsflesh
world war z
inhuman condition

clearly, zombie theme. i considered needing in the flash but I thought it was disqualified, turns out I think it is just under the limit if someone wants to nominate that with Jem and Amy as characters I would be really happy

Potentially In a Heartbeat (short film) Baby Driver(2017)and 19 Days (Korean Webtoon)

[personal profile] digitalmeowmix 2017-09-11 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
In a Heartbeat is a very short and adorable 3d animation about a gay crush with a happy ending

"A closeted boy runs the risk of being outed by his own heart after it pops out of his chest to chase down the boy of his dreams."

Watch it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2REkk9SCRn0

I would be nomming both boys and maybe the boys heart? (lol)

Baby Driver I would nomming Baby, Darling, Doc, and Buddy.

19 Days is a shonen-ai webcomic about to childhood best friends goofing off and slowing falling in love when one of the realizes the other is attracted to him

I would be nomming both main boys

Would Lost in Austen: Create Your Own Austen Adventure by Emma Campbell Webster qualify? It's a choose your own adventure book mashing up the Austen novels. There are quotes from the books, and you can follow the same story paths (though you are fixed as a Bennet daughter and so will take that backstory with you), but there's also original content, including a couple of suitors no Austen character has, and different paths to some of the same book love interests.

The same question applies to Matches & Matrimony. That one's a visual novel mashing up Persuasion, Sense & Sensibility, and Pride & Prejudice, partly by combining some of the characters: Willoughby and Wickham together form Wickeby, Lydia is also Marianne and Lucy.

I'll definitely be nominating Victoria (TV) with Victoria, Melbourne and Albert as characters. I'm not sure what my other choices will be... Has anyone else been watching Quacks? (It's a series that's still airing on the BBC - basically it's a comedy about early Victorian medical practices...) I might nominate that with the four main characters. I'll have to give this a bit of thought...

I'm wondering whether anyone with a nomination slot free saw The Orville last night and was as taken with it as I was. I already have 2 slots decided and a gazillion more fandoms competing for the 3rd one :(

I'll be nominating the Monkees (that's my Some Day My Fic Will Come request) and Arthur Ransome's Coot Club series. Anyone going to nominate any of the following by any remote chance?

Dad's Army, Giles cartoons, Sector General series - James White, Miss Seeton series, Giants series - James Hogan and Mrs Brown's Boys

Would anyone be interested in either The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the Netflix show, or the "Myths and Legends" podcast? I'm not sure if the latter would even make sense, but I'm really getting attached to the story-telling style and meta references in it. Just a thought.
