Fandoms Brainstorming

The eligibility rules are up: LJ | DW and nominations are just over a week away.

Want to talk about your nomination plans? Find out if other people know your obscure canons? Strategise on the best label for your fandom? You can do it here (or on LJ)!

ETA
-Each person can nominate 3 fandoms and 4 characters per fandom.
-Nominations on AO3 will neither be approved nor visible until after the nominations period. If anyone wants to do some coordinating around that, here might be a good place to put your hand up to say you're interested (but I suggest doing the actual coordinating on another post).
rubylily: Kanami/Mai, Katana Maidens (❋ Gardenia)

I am predictable and plan to nominate the same fandoms I've nominated previous years. If you're interested in fantasy anime/manga that aren't too long, why not give these ones a look?

Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi | Sunday Without God: In a world where no one can give birth or truly die without being buried by a mystical gravekeeper, twelve-year-old Ai is one such gravekeeper. After losing her village, she sets out on a journey to save the world God has supposedly abandoned and makes new friends along the way. The first half of the series focuses on the death aspect, while the second half focuses on miracles, and despite its apocalyptic setting, it's a very hopeful series. It's twelve episodes and can be watched on Crunchyroll.

Stray Little Devil: Thirteen-year-old Pam is a normal school girl, at least until she gets sucked into a world inspired by Mesopotamian mythology and where devils and angels have an uneasy alliance. Pam is transformed into a devil and learns that if she becomes a true full-fledged devil, she'll get to go home. She also meets haughty angel Linfa, who looks identical to her human best friend Rinka. As Pam does her best to adjust to her new world, her bond with Linfa deepens, and best of all, it's surprise canon yuri! The series is five volumes and used copies aren't too hard to find.

Venus Versus Virus: An urban fantasy about a normal girl named Sumire who teams up with the gothic lolita and eyepatch-wearing Lucia to hunt Viruses, violent zombie-like ghosts. Sumire awakens to a dark power within herself that lets her violently take down Viruses, and as she struggles to control her powers, her bond with Lucia changes and deepens, especially as they overcome various conflicts together. There's plenty of action and yuri subtext to be had, and the manga is eight volumes while the anime is twelve episodes and can be watched on Funimation.

I plan to nominate the following:

Killjoys: coordinating with kayim and lady_ragnell on page 2

The Strange Case of the Starship Iris: Violet, Arkady, Brian, Krejjh (if someone else could nominate Sana and maybe the IGR agents, that would be great!)

Legion: David, Cary, Kerry, Oliver (lots more characters to nominate here too, if anyone wants to coordinate)
primeideal: Multicolored sideways eight (infinity sign) (Default)

[personal profile] primeideal 2017-09-05 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
...And now I want to nominate Brandon Sanderson's short story Legion and its sequel, oops.

Okay, so my two definites as of the moment are:

Curtain Up | Theater Shoes - Noel Streatfeild
- for characters I definitely want Mark Forbes & Miriam Cohen but I'm debating about who to use for the last two slots since I'd like Sorrel and Holly but I'm also very interested in Adeline Warren and fic about her would also bring in some interesting dynamics with her parents and siblings and give different perspectives on the characters as viewed in canon. If anyone has a strong opinion on which two of the three I should pick, please say so, it'll help make up my mind!

The Flora Trilogy - Ysabeau Wilce
- for characters: Flora Segunda (of course), Idden, Juliet "Buck", and First Flora

Some fandoms I'm considering for the last slot

The Books of Bayern series - Shannon Hale
- characters would have to be parsed down from Isi, Selia, Napralina, Finn, Enna, Rin, Dasha, Razo, & Conrad

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase - Joan Aiken (this is part of her Wolves chronicles but only one of the main characters seems to appear in any of the later books)
- for characters: Sylvia, Bonnie, and Simon, & I could probably be persuaded to add any other character for the last slot

Emily of Deep Valley - Maud Hart Lovelace (in addition to the wonderful Betsy-Tacy series, Lovelace wrote three other books set in Deep Valley, "Carney's House Party", "Winona's Pony Cart", and this one. Unlike the other two, although familiar characters do feature, this book centers around orphan Emily Webster who lives with her grandfather and has to learn how to restructure her life as her classmates go onto college and get married while she stays in Deep Valley to look after her grandfather)
- for characters: Emily, Jed, Layla, and Annette

Jane the Virgin
- for characters: Jane, Petra, Nadine, and Michael
saiditallbefore: (Mary Anne)

I will likely be using my nomination slots for The Way Way Back (2013) (Duncan, Owen, Caitlin), Northern Exposure (some combination of Chris, Ed, Marilyn, Holling, Shelly), and The Birds (Melanie, Annie).

Fandoms I hope will end up in the tagset: Y Tu Mama Tambien, Atomic Blonde, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, Baby Driver, Draft Day, Dunkirk, Elysium, The Fate of the Furious (not sure about eligibility there), The Avengers (the TV show from the 60's).

Definitely nominating:

Les liaisons dangereuses - I really need more Merteuil in the world. I can do book version (English translations, obviously) or even the 1988 movie? Not sure. The movie is of course easier to get into time-wise, but there's some good stuff in the book absent from or only hinted sidelong at in the movie.

Other things I will either nominate or hope end up in the tagset:
The Americans (TV 2013) - Luckily this seems to pop up a lot without me necessarily having to nominate it, and last year it even got several fics!
Rome (TV) - Specifically thinking about Servilia here, though in general more fic would be good
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - Either book or movie. It's been the movie the past couple years, I think, due to that again being easier to get people into in terms of time commitments, so if I nom it it will probably be under that unless there's a strong urge for book fic
A Single Man (2009) - Usually someone ends up nomming this
Kingsman RPF The new movie comes out right around nominations, and hopefully the cast will deliver on the press tour for more prompts!

I haven't read Liaisons in waaay too long, but the movie is burned into my brain. Still haven't seen Valmont, which I should one of these days. If you do nominate Rome, would you consider nominating Niobe and/or Vorenus, if you have the open slots?

Green Hornet (1966)
Fairy Fencer F
Power Rangers Jungle Fury
Power Rangers Mystic Force
hellabaloo: (Baloo)

I'm decided on two nominations:

Tumanbay - a historical/fantasy podcast based on the Mamluk Empire in Egypt in 15th century that has everything: palace intrigue! found families! oaths of revenge! plot-twists! mysterious threats from other empires! And I just found out there's a second season, so hopefully the open ending that season 1 ended on will be resolved. I am so hyped :D

Still Star-Crossed - we hardly knew you! It's a fun, tropey, cancelled-before-its-time tv show that take a pretty standard fic premise (What happens after Romeo and Juliet die?) and runs with it. To utterly glorious places- the main pair has a canonical enemies to friends to lovers?? (or at least people who kiss) arc, but there are so many more good character interactions in addition to them.

And I'm still debating my third nom. Breath of the Wild is the current front-runner, but I'm sure there will be other nominators for that fandom. There are the fantastic Baahubali movies and the deliciously trashy Guy Ritchie romp-fest that was King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, which are both epic and fun in their own ways.

I'm still waffling a bit but I'll probably end up nominating Questionable Content (I'm trusting that someone else will nominate Bubbles and Faye so I can focus on getting the Elliott/Clinton/Brun OT3 in there) and Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong (because as cute as the ending was, Holly and Our Lady of Robotics should obviously have gotten together and Nate and Charlie are going to have some revelations about each other in college). Not sure about my third nom. Maybe Lois McMaster Bujold's Penric series? Or In Other Lands/Turn of the Story but I feel fairly confident that at least one other person will jump right on that catnip for me. DECISIONS ARE HARD.

Almost certainly a couple of things I've nominated before, The Story of Owen and some of the minor characters from the Steerswoman series. Maybe the Watchmaker of Filigree Street, also minor characters, or Diana Wynne Jones something, or Pamela Dean something...maybe Ellen Emerson White's new novel about the first woman in professional baseball, or if I'm feeling super obscure, Gretchen Sprague's 1950s YA novels about classical music and racism. Oh dear, too many books.

Definitely nominating, with open character slots:
Indiana Jones movies - Indiana Jones, Marion Ravenwood
Law & Order (1990) - Ben Stone, Shambala Greene
And maybe
Sunset Boulevard - Norma Desmond, Max Von Mayerling

I'm thinking about nominating The Grand Budapest Hotel (for M. Gustave and Madame D.) but I'm not sure that I wouldn't be the only one interested.

It's so hard! This year I want to nominate All Souls Trilogy - Deborah Harkness but I'm dithering on characters. Miriam, definitely. Hamish? Gallowglass? Marthe? Witb the TV adaptation underway, I hope interest continues to grow.

There's also Sorcerer to the Crown - Zen Cho but, again, I need to settle on the characters.

I'd also like to nominate Lois Lane series - Gwenda Bond but I'm one book behind and need to catch up. Anyone else already nominating?

Absolutely nothing settled, but in the spirit of the last two Yuletides, I'm thinking of again nominating something not yet represented on AO3: Greg Rucka's new comic series The Old Guard, just five issues in. Five soldiers--immortal by chance--just keep on doing what they know how to do since they have no other choice. Archetypal Rucka heroine lead (which is a good thing), queer characters, lots of violence and sex, and the consequences of immortality. Anyone else reading this?

Oh, Yuletide noms, I am super unprepared for you!

Nothing is really jumping out at me as "omg must nominate" this year for some reason--

I'm really enjoying the new Worst Witch TV series, but should I nom that or the original Jill Murphy books?

Maybe the Amulet series of middle grade fantasy graphic novels by Kazu Kibuishi?

I'm still very far from being caught up on Dark Matter, but would love to see more fic for it.

I'm rewatching Homicide: Life on the Street with one of my housemates and rekindling my love for that series...

Is Sense8 eligible?

A couple of super obscure ideas:

The Carlisles series by Norma Johnston--80s YA, very reminiscent of L'Engle's Austin family books in tone

The Wynd family series by Stephen Krensky--middle grade fantasy from my childhood, about 4 siblings who are witches

Is it that time of year again already? Welp, my list of like ... 40 or so things needs whittling down.

Definitely nominating Siberia again. (For the third year running, I'll keep at it until I get at least one fic from this.) Weird little one season horror show. The premise is that it's a fictional stow, but filmed like a reality show: a group of people are dumped in the Siberian wilderness to compete for a cash prize. However, things quickly start to go from bickering and stunts for the cameras to ominous elements and a mystery. It's got a great cast and a cool premise.

I'm nominating Geek & Sundry's "Sagas of Sundry: Dread" show with a friend, we're splitting the cast list up so they all definitely get nominated. Online rpg show of a couple actors roleplaying a story about a bunch of teens in the late 80s who go to the woods and encounter some spooky stuff. The twist, instead of rolling dice to determine actions, they must pull from a giant jenga tower: whoever makes the tower fall dies.

Not sure about my last slot. So many great things to pick from!
I'm tempted to nominate the Wix Superbowl ads: Gal Gadot and Jason Statham are two spies/assassins/badasses, and some poor guy is just trying to run a damn restaurant ... and then a food truck ... and then a food truck on a ship, due to the interference of the spies.

I discovered a webcomic this year, Plume, a kind of Weird West thing, that really caught my attention.

Then there's some mainstays from years past that are always on my list. 2014's Treasure Island because Silver's Wife is an actual character and has a lot of potential. The Cape because it's so delightfully campy. Mystery Men. Would You Rather. A couple music videos I always mean to nominate and never do. Flesh and Bone, if I can articulate how it made me feel. I've considered for a while nominating one of Matt Shapiro's Cinescape videos someday but justifying that to the people running Yuletide might prove too complicated.

I'm nomming Sagas of Sundry: Dread with [personal profile] aunt_zelda, as mentioned above; my four characters are Tanner, Storyteller, Goatman, and Mr. Wren.

[personal profile] luzula suggested Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy and I'm digging that. I'm thinking I'll nom Maya and John ([personal profile] luzula is nomming Sax, Ann, Nadia, and Arkady, covering my faves (Sax is my precious)), so if anyone has Feelings about the other two spots, I'm open to suggestions.

As for my third fandom, I have no idea whatsoever at this point!

The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells

Bring It On (Musical) which has a different plot and cast of characters from the film

Provenance by Ann Leckie which is released on 26th Sep (and therefore available by end of signups), and which I already adore based on the sample 3 chapters made available to subscribers to Leckie's mailing list

I love this post - every year I get a ton of recommendations from it for new books and movies and shows to try!

I spent weeks waiting for nominations to open, only to realize I don't know what I want!

I'm definitely nominating Kings: Jack Benjamin, Rose Benjamin, Thomasina
Oh! Just thought of Zen (TV): Aurelio Zen, Tania Moretti, Amedeo Colonna, Moscati

But I don't know what else I should nominate:

Better Off Ted
some of Caravaggio's paintings
Cold Comfort Farm (1995)
Columbus [spoiler alert - John Cho is GORGEOUS in this]
Daddy-Long-Legs - Jean Webster
Doctrine of Labyrinths - Sarah Monette
Eight Cousins series - Louisa May Alcott
The Fall (2006)
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
Ladyhawke

Sally Lockhart - Philip Pullman
"Siren Song" [song] by Devics
Sports Night
The Talisman Ring - Georgette Heyer
Touching Evil (US)

[personal profile] wendelah1 2017-09-08 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yuletide nominations already?!

I am definitely nominating Deviations: The X-Files (comic). Life Doesn't Discriminate (Between Sinners And Saints), the story I received last Yuletide, is wonderful (go read it!) and I love it, but there is so much more fic that needs to be written for these characters. I just discovered that there was a second issue released in March 2017. It is now in the mail! The Gunmen are featured!

If no one else does so, I am nominating Timeless because I am obsessed with this show (and with time travel in general). Lucy, Wyatt, Rufus. One more character tbd.

Late to the party since it was released in 2014, but I want to ask for <'>Interstellar because I was haunted by the ending of that film. I will probably have to nominate it if I want to request it.

Assuming Timeless gets nominated and I have another fandom slot, I am wavering on whether or not to nominate The X-Files RPF. On the one hand, I ship David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson like burning, I have had amazing luck requesting this fandom, and it is still Yuletide-eligible. On the other hand, everyone's luck runs out eventually. And I hated the revival miniseries and don't want to read fic that has anything to do with filming it or the upcoming episodes or their promotions of same. I'm pretending it never happened, okay?

Other fandoms I hope to see in the tag set: The Americans, The Expanse, and The Steerswomen series. I would love to see someone nominate C.J Cherryh's 40,000 in Gehenna instead of Cyteen or Foreigner. I just reread it and it is so good.

Anne Shirley is a young teen orphan in Nova Scotia (year sometime late 1870s) whose parents died when she was only three months old. Her life now consists of being temporarily adopted into families so she can raise childern, do housekeeping, and other labor. After the abusive Mr. Hammond dies, she's sent back to the orphanage -- only to be adopted by an elderly brother and sister from Prince Edward's Island. Little does she know that this was a miscommunication; they wanted to adopt someone out of genuine compassion, but Mr. Cuthbert is getting too old to work the farm and they wanted a boy to help out.

An adaptation of Anne of Green Gables with a focus on the darker themes of Anne's life before Green Gables. It explores how a traumatized kid promised of a life of servitude transitions to being in a loving home, adopted out of love and not malice. It takes the core themes of the books and diverges at a certain point, becoming its own thing while staying true to story. Features expanded roles for minor book characters like Jerry Baynard, the young French boy hired to help out Mr. Cuthbert. Explores the darker aspects of the treatment of orphans in Canada during this time. Like any fun canon divergence AU, it explores the original material in new ways. Renewed for season 2. Phenomenal casting and cinematography. All on Netflix instant.

Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa
Meghan Chase is a normal human teenager until the day faeries kidnap her younger brother and replace him with a horrifying changling. Alongside her best friend, who's worked undercover her whole life posing as a teenage boy when he's actually a powerful, ancient faery himself, Meghan ventures into the faery world called Nevernever to save her brother and restore the last vestiges of normalcy in her now chaotic life. The true gem of the series is the Nevernever, world building, and creepy aesthetic. A series of four books. Brain candy, good to binge on and light reads. Has a few quintessential YA urban fantasy tropes but in a self-aware way that makes you shake your head in fond exasperation.

Yessss, Anne With An E! I'm not a huge fan of the Anne books, but I fell in love with this series. Any idea which characters you're nominating?

I read the Iron Fey series ages ago. Depending on the requests, I might have to re-read it.

I'm down to four possible fandoms to nominate, so if someone else is planning on nominating one of them (with matching characters) let me know - it'd make the decision-making process much easier. Also I have open character slots for all but one, so I'm open to nominating characters for other people as needed.

Everybody Hates Chris - Rochelle, [open], [open], [open]

Last Tango in Halifax - Gillian, Caroline, Olga, [open - probably Kate unless someone has another character they really want nominated]

One Day at a Time (2017) - Penelope, Elena, Lydia, Jill

In the Heights - Daniela, Carla, [open], [open]

Every year. Every year I count down the days until Noms open and then every year, I forget everything I've read/seen/experienced that I'd said I NEED FIC FOR THIS NOW! the moment they open and panic. WHY SELF, WHY?!?!

But, off the top of my head:

The West Wing Weekly Podcast with Josh Malina, Hrishikesh Hirway, Bradley Whitford and still deciding on the fourth possibly Sorkin?

Northern Exposure I basically want to nom every single character to ever appear. Between [personal profile] lakeeffectgirl and I, we have nommed Chris, Ed, Shelley, Holling, Marilyn, Joel, Cicely and Roslyn.

The last thing I'm torn between a handful of things:

Miranda because I love her and want more of her shenanigans
Philadelphia Story because ♥ Katherine Hepburn ♥
His Girl Friday because ♥ Cary Grant ♥
Sliding Doors I just love the idea of parallel stories and all the What Ifs they imply.

N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy just finished up, so I definitely want to nominate that. Tonkee and Hjarka for sure, still undecided on the other two.

Also some Diana Wynne Jones, maybe A Sudden Wild Magic or Deep Secret, because hey, what is Yuletide for if not appreciating the most obscure bits of already fairly small fandoms?
