Fandoms Brainstorming

The eligibility rules are up: LJ | DW and nominations are just over a week away.

Want to talk about your nomination plans? Find out if other people know your obscure canons? Strategise on the best label for your fandom? You can do it here (or on LJ)!

ETA
-Each person can nominate 3 fandoms and 4 characters per fandom.
-Nominations on AO3 will neither be approved nor visible until after the nominations period. If anyone wants to do some coordinating around that, here might be a good place to put your hand up to say you're interested (but I suggest doing the actual coordinating on another post).

Since I love canons of the Yuletide This-Isn't-Even-A-Fandom variety, I'm thinking of nominating RPF based around the art world pigment feud between Stuart Semple and Anish Kapoor. This whole thing basically makes me laugh forever, and it could be interesting to see what people do with it.

What else are people thinking of nominating in the Weird Shit category?

That is hilarious; I'd love to see it either as RPF or anthropomorfic, with Vantablack, PINK, Diamond Dust, and maybe Black 2.0 or Shift as characters.

I had some thoughts about Kickstarter Anthropomorfic, with characters Early Bird, Stretch Goals, and maybe Self-Insert Pledge and Risks & Challenges.

I'm trying to figure out if anyone else would be interested in Fireproof Games' The Room series (1, 2, and 3 with 4 ("Old Sins") coming out "Late 2017")

There are several characters that could be used, including "Player" for those who like 2nd-person stories.

I'm not making any promises but I might try to treat it if it turns up, I used to wonder if I'd ever see it in the Yuletide tagset! I played 1 and half of 2, it's not hard to catch up in time, and it looks like the kind of canon I like to write a ficlet for.

Has anyone other than me read the novel Plus One by Elizabeth Fama? Surprisingly enjoyable for dystopian YA. This is set in an alternate future in which the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 led to the need for split-shift staffing of hospitals, a day set and a night set of doctors and nurses, which in turn proved so efficient that the division between day workers and night workers was expanded to all parts of life, formalized and codified and enforced by law. But as daylight living is more natural and presumably more enjoyable, gradually the night people (Smudges) became stereotyped as stupid, undesirable, lesser than the day people (Rays) - and it took me until about 3/4 through the book to realize this was a civil rights allegory.

Cool worldbuilding! Also there is a potential femslash ship.

Sounds interesting! I'll see if I can find it in the library; it seems like the kind of world-building I could get into.

Does anyone but me have any interest in The Kettering Incident? It's a science fiction TV show that came out at the same time as some other shows that got more attention. It has lots of potential for weird fic. How about Jordskott? That's more of a fantasy show but I get the feeling it was mostly popular in Europe. I really want to nominate at least one of them but if no one else is interested I have other things I might be better off nominating.

I'm probably going to nominate Die Ärzte again for band RPF. I'm pretty sure no one is ever going to offer to write that for Yuletide but I can hope and it gives me an excuse to talk about them.

Things I'm considering nominating:

- The Innocents (1961) - this is pretty much a lock -- I'll be nominating Miss Giddons, Flora & Miles and Miss Jessel. Would anyone be interested in nomming Peter Quint or the sexy mean uncle?
- Atlanta (FX), also pretty much a lock. I'm thinking of nomming Earn, Van, Alfred & Darius.

The third slot's pretty open - I'm considering Kids on the Slope (anime about kids in post-war Japan falling in love with jazz and each other), No. 6 (dystopian anime w/ a canon gay relationship) Jeff Buckley's cover of "I Know It's Over" (I want to be sad.)

What do you think?

I have two definites and a whole string of "I hope someone nominates these!"

Definites:
Brandy (song) by Looking Glass. I'm blaming this one on GotG2.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) It is the 40th anniversary!

Hoping for mostly old favorites:
Valdemar -- Mercedes Lackey
Elemental Blessings -- Sharon Shinn
A Little Princess -- Frances Hodgson Burnett
The Melendy Family -- Elizabeth Enright
Ballet Shoes -- Noel Streatfeild

There is also a prequel to Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman coming out in October, "The Rules of Magic" which may be too late for this Yuletide!

Probably want to brush up on "Alif the Unseen," which I read too late for noms last year, and decide who if anyone I'm nominating there. It's a modern day SF novel by G. Willow Wilson set during the Arab Spring with a fascinating mix of diverse religious characters.

Probably also going to nominate The Prestige, a movie about rival magicians which I gather has been nominated often in the past but not last year? Lots of plot twists, lots of hate-slash potential. Was on Netflix last I checked.

And, uh. Board games maybe? :p

I really want to nominate the James Bond novels, but I wonder if they are still allowed?

There is no Books/James Bond category on FFN, and AO3 has only 72 fics tagged as "James Bond - Ian Fleming", and most of them are a mix of book! and movie!canon - or simply movie!canon fics anyway. But the "All media types" tags makes things complicated, even if the vast majority of those are also movie!canon.

This is my first time doing Yuletide in years, and I don't think I nominated last time I took part, so I'm really excited here.

I'm thinking of nominating Blackpink (K-pop band) and Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer, and I still have absolutely no idea what I'd do for a third nomination.

Just idly brainstorming this morning, I was kind of surprised to discover that Bloomsbury Group RPF and Led Zeppelin are both small enough fandoms to qualify. (Bloomsbury Group RPF is small enough that I could read it all by lunch if I didn't have to work.)

With just three nominating slots, I suspect I ought to nominate just one of the two Micro/Nano-Fandoms of Doom I've been toting around for the past several years...unless it turns out that there are closet fen out there for both of them (hope hope). Here they are:

Diana Winthrop series - "Kate Chambers"

I have put the byline in quote marks because it turns out that it was a pen name for Norma Johnston (sadly, the very useful Web page discussing Johnston's many pen names has vanished off the Web and doesn't seem to have been Waybacked). This was a teen sleuth series -- six slim paperbacks from the mid-'80s. Diana was molded from the Nancy Drew template, but there was a large extended-family ensemble/guest cast, and stronger character development generally (Diana's father gets a recurring romantic interest who's also a worthwhile mentor figure!). Moreover, you can actually reread these for the plotting -- each book in the series was dedicated to a classic or then-popular mystery writer, and it shows.

Evidently, though, only about twelve people read these back in the day, and so far none of the other eleven have turned up as Yuletiders. :-/ I Easter-Egged a much older Diana into one of my Castle fics some while back, but I would dearly love to see proper fic about these characters.

Planet Builders series - "Robyn Tallis"

I know more than twelve people read these; this SF series ran to ten slim paperbacks and the "Robyn Tallis" combine includes a handful of authors Yuletide fen should recognize (Sherwood Smith, Bruce Coville, Debra Doyle & James Macdonald). In this case, part of the problem was that the book packager that did the editorial work imploded dramatically not long after these appeared. These are, more or less, colony-world SF action-adventures with a good-sized cast of teenage leads -- *not* quite Norton/Heinlein successors (the pace is faster, the cast is more diverse, and there's some fairly complicated and sneaky ongoing plot twistiness), but in that ballpark.

There's plenty of room for fic in this setting -- and there's even some semi-canonical fic-like content; legend tells of an apocryphal Volume #11 entitled A Fire In Their Pants which cheerfully and thoroughly broke through the "mild PG" barrier (and possibly the fourth wall). Someday I must track down a copy of that, but in the meantime, more traditional Yuletide fic would be totally welcome....

Knowing the former series was actually by Norma Johnston makes me like 100% more interested in eventually tracking them down...

speaking of micro-fandoms of doom, maybe this is the year I ask for Johnston's Carlyles series?

I am totally nominating Alphas, because I watched it this summer and I want Nina and Rachel and Dr. Rosen so badly… and since I know of another fan out there who'll nominate Gary and Anna almost certainly, I might throw in Cameron as well, just for kicks. The show badly needs some resolution to the S2 cliffhanger… or some exploration of the moral dilemmas therein… or some emotional h/c… It's got something for just about everyone!

I'm also quite sure I'm going to nominate Worldweavers - Alma Alexander again, because that YA fantasy quartet is fantastic! It needs more fic than the one (very delightful!) fic I got for Night on Fic Mountain this year.

My third slot is in contention between the following fandoms:
C-16: FBI
Women's Murder Club (TV)
1-800-Missing (for which I would post to Evidence, because it's the first season of a show that changed *everything* between S1 and S2 except for the main character and her gift, and I do mean everything)
Gold Diggers (1995)

Anyone considering nominating any of those? All of them are great fandoms and while I've gotten Gold Diggers fic in the past (and a lovely one) it was long enough ago that I would happily get any of them, and deciding which is HARD. I'm going to wait till I get my Genex and AUex gifts as the fandoms I get in those may inform what I go for for Yuletide, but we'll see…

[personal profile] thisbluespirit 2017-09-01 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I just watched Alphas this year and have been enjoying it! (I haven't watched S2, though, so I'll be no use for Yuletide, but will def. be putting S2 on my Christmas list. Yule-fic to consume after would be excellent - especially if there's an unresolved cliffhanger to come!)

I'm still very much in the whittling down the long-list phase, but since some of these are somewhat Yuletide regulars, I'm hoping to find other people nominating at least a couple of these.

So things I'd like to see/read/write this Yuletide:

Hidden Legacy by Ilona Andrews (I just finished it and it was so great, I want all the world building and House politics and magical children and for Bern to be unstarched BY ROMANCE).
Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews (Barabas/Christopher yo!)
Him Series by Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy (I don’t want the curtain fic, I want the whole IKEA)
Wolfwalker series by Tara K. Harper (one day I’ll get the found pack fic of my dreams and id)
The Future Trilogy by Thea Beckman (because someone needs to write the ecotopia matriarchy romance we all deserve)
The Iron Seas series by Meljean Brook (the most awesome steampunk world building ever deserves more fic)

The Get Down (I cannot take the limbo Dizzee and Thor are currently in, I need fix it fic)
You’re The Worst (it’s still awesome but boy does it need FIXING)
Difficult People (because I want more assholes falling in love and there is zero fic)

God’s Own Country (it’s going to be high on my list, because queer Romanian shepherd, and also those landscapes are gorgeous)
King Arthur (2004) (I will not rest before there exists Sarmathian Threesome fic that I haven’t written)

17776 (it’s awesome)

...

I have no idea how I'm going to decide.

I'm not sure. Probably some more very old British telly again (Mr Palfrey of Westminster, Tenko, Manhunt, or Department S are all current contenders for one slot), and probably I will have to nom the terrible old telly historical fandom of my heart, Shadow of the Tower, no matter how obviously hopeless that quest is, which accounts for two.

Three is at the moment going to be MC Beaton's Daughters of Manneriling series, which is an odd choice, but the character I'm nominating is Mannerling. I mean, picture this: a fairly random, off-hand romance novel series where the beautiful Regency stately home they live in is in fact, so beautiful and desirable it's evil and drives everyone to commit crimes to obtain, or throw themselves off the bannister/into the pond, after which they haunt it.

I want backstory or the next generation(s & on) or crossovers or whatever. It's a bit random, but they're a slight series, and hopefully I'm not the only one who read them and wanted to steal the premise on the spot.

However, I am also tempted to try The Lady Vanishes (1938) again. So difficult to decide...

Also very much hoping to see Sapphire and Steel, Ripper Street, Jonathan Creek, Heyer, DWJ etc. among the set. Also that the person who nommed Dept S will do it again and save me from some of my obscure deliberations.

I was wondering if there was any interest in Raven's Home, the (second) spinoff of That's So Raven. Raven Baxter and Chelsea Daniels from That's So Raven decide to move into an apartment in Chicago together with their children to save money. And while their children are involved in shenanigans, the show hints at all these crazy pre-show adventures between Raven and Chelsea. I feel this show has all sorts of possibilities for fic, but then again, there isn't even a lot of That's So Raven fic on AO3 or FF.net. :/

I haven't watched it yet, but it's on my list and I suspect I will be Highly Interested in fic once I finally watch it.

I have two super obscure book series that I'd like to nominate:

Dragon Series by Elizabeth A. Lynn
It has been done for Yuletide at least once in the past, but there are only two fics that I could find for it anywhere online. I would be absolutely thrilled to see this fandom grow a bit. Who doesn't love a canonically gay, handsome, shape-shifting, warrior dragon prince who is desperately in love with a shy, quiet singer/BFF-since-childhood? I ask you.

Halfway Human (part of the Twenty Planets Series) by Carolyn Ives Gilman
As far as I can tell, there basically is no fandom for this series. Although I just created a dreamwidth comm [community profile] twentyplanets for it, so...
I would be beyond happy if I found even one other fan of this book. It's such an undiscovered gem. I have so many head-canons that I'd love to see explored.

Some other nominations that I'm considering:
The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold (mainly Cazaril-centric, because I haven't read Paladin of Souls yet)
Westmark by Lloyd Alexander
Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner
The Last Herald-Mage by Mercedes Lackey

I love the Chalion/Five Gods books! LMB Penric novellas are also wonderful! (notes for potential offers.)

Twin Peaks brainstorming, anyone? With its 217 cast members, The Return isn't the most Yuletide-friendly canon, anyone got a specific plotline that's near and dear to their heart?
I'm starting with Albert, Tammy and Diane for sure, and then... Cynthia? Dido? So many possibilities!

I will also nominate Obduction, which is a standalone sci-fi point and click adventure by the creators of Myst, it came out on PC and Mac last year and on PS4/PSVR this week and it's the bee's knees.
The cast is small so my nom should cover the basics... if anyone wants to add more characters, stay assured that Farley, CW and Joseph (and some alien) are in already.

What I am considering for my nominations: Well, it’s basically going to be a year of Dracula focused fandoms when it comes to nominations from me.

Count Dracula (1977). I know that I will definitely be nominating Renfield as someone else wanted him, so that’s a lock.

Dracula (TV 1968): Jonathan Harker, Mina Harker, and John Seward are a definite. The fourth character slot will either be Lucy Weston, Dracula, or Van Helsing. It depends on who people want to see nominated more in that fandom, since I keep going back and forth.

Dracula—Bram Stoker (the original novel): Dracula and Jonathan are just about the only ones I'm certain to nominate. Is there anyone in particular that anybody is desperate to see? Because if someone wanted the Brides of Dracula, Van Helsing, Mina, Lucy, or even Sister Agatha a massive amount I'd be happy to throw whichever two in.

I hope to see Crimson Peak (2015) return to be nominated. I would absolutely love to see Hammer Horror Films or Universal Monster Movies get a nod, too.

I've got 2 noms that I really want this year:

South Korean TV show King of Mask Singer (nearly all the episodes can be found online with English subs). I think some of the contestants would have made an excellent King or Queen if they'd succeeded, so I think most of my requests for the show would be AUs.

My other definite nom is British sketch trio Pappy's, who I absolutely love and adore and whatnot (and so shipable too). They host two podcasts; Flatshare Slamdown (which I'd recommend listening to first) and Bangers and Mash.

I'm not sure about my 3rd nom yet, but I might want The Last Leg again? Or maybe Taskmaster?

If it helps, I am definitely planning on nominating The Last Leg and Taskmaster. I am up for suggestions for characters to nominate on Taskmaster, as I'd be happy with any of them.

I'm waffling over my noms -- my short list is:

Tang Dynasty RPF - characters Li Bai, Du Fu, Wang Wei, Meng Hoaran. If anybody else is interested in playing in this timeframe, maybe we could coordinate noms -- it wouldn't hurt to include some participants in the An Lushan rebellion, such as Yang Guifei and An Lushan.

Taketori Monogatari - characters Kaguya-hime, Emperor, Old Man Bamboo Cutter, Old Woman Bamboo Cutter.

Man'yoshu - I need to look up characters to propose, but there's enough poets writing to each other that there should enough to fill a small novella.

The Ballad of East and West - Rudyard Kipling - characters Kamal, The Colonel's Son, Kamal's Son.

Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio - Pú Sōnglíng - not sure if there's any point to including characters.

Yayoi Jidai RPF - not sure what characters yet, but if I do this, I plan to not include Himiko.

(Hmm. One of these things is not like the others ... )

Any thoughts on which to focus on? Thoughts on coordinating noms?

I've already nominated Strange Tales, with no characters since as you say, what's the point? (I did put generic characters in for Trick or Treat, because the mod has said in the past they preferred it, and I can see there may be a subset of participants for that looking to request or write ghosts or fox spirits specifically, but I don't think the same's really true of Yuletide.)
