Dear Yuletide Writer Letters 2019

It's letters time! If you're writing a letter along with your Yuletide sign-up, comment here with a link to your letter and also enter the details in the 2019 tagset app. For browsing convenience, the app also generates a google spreadsheet you can access directly.

What's the deal with letters?
Letters are an optional tradition of Yuletide. When you sign up to the event, there's a space in the form for linking to somewhere in your own space (journal, tumblr, etc) where you can go into detail about what you like in fic and fandom. This post collects these links. The prompts on AO3 are hidden through sign-ups, but letters are visible as soon as you want them to be.

Letters are an optional extra in Yuletide. If you only post a letter here, you haven't signed up. To get an assignment and a gift, you need to sign up at the collection - open through November 3-4.

What makes a good letter?
Mileage varies. We encourage you, at minimum, to include your AO3 name, the fandoms and characters you're requesting, and your Do-Not-Wants. Read through other letters and follow the styles that work for you. Additional tips: here & here.

How to post your letter
  1. Finish your letter and make sure it's publicly visible

  2. Enter it in the app! You can edit your letter after submitting it - save the key, or ask the mods for the key if you lose it.

  3. Comment below! Include:
    • Your AO3 name

    • A link to your letter

    • The fandoms you are requesting (3-6)

    • The characters you are requesting in your fandoms (1-4, or Any)
If you post to the app first, it will spit out a handy chunk of text with all these details for you to use when commenting.

If for whatever reason you can only comment on a post, then please include the following line in your comment:

Mods, please add my letter to the app.

We will sweep the post occasionally and add letters.

Warning: Locked or placeholder letters may be removed.

a) 6 is the maximum, 3 the minimum for requesting fic, so that our Beloved Request Sorters have a good chance of being able to match you to someone who wants to write that which you have requested. Request too few and they might not be able to find you a writer. Request too many and they will reach for the whiskey bottle and be unable to match things. (It's an optimisation problem involving subsets and links, if you're into that sort of thing.)

And because they enjoy my pain and tears as I cut my list down from the 15 I really really wanted :-)

b) Yes. Absolutely. If you want to receive a story about the soon-to-be-raised 11Foot8 bridge, or the 1938 Robin Hood movie, or even the Real Women of NASA, then request away. It doesn't matter if you didn't nominate them. If someone nominated them, then they want to read or write the fic for that fandom.

You know. It's interesting you mentioned 11Foot8 bridge cause I happened upon it in the tagset and found it absolutely fascinating.

By my understanding, they don't have any intention of raising the bridge, both that and the other option of lowering the road would involve too much work and cost too much. So they have signs, and flashing lights, which a certain number of drivers insist on ignoring.

There are multiple bridges at that height across the US, relics of days long ago when trucks were not quite so tall. In places where either the bridges can be raised easily or the road beneath lowered easily, that has already been done long since. The 11'8" bridges left, usually there are aaaaaaaaallllll sorts of logistical challenges that make it prohibitively expensive.

The actual 11'8" bridge that had the website dedicated to crashes because it is so low is now, by my understanding, being raised. They had enough crashes that they were apparently "this is ridiculous, MONEY IS NO OBJECT WE ARE GOING TO FIX THAT $%?*! THING!"

They are actually raising it, according to Wikipedia - this is new this month: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/11_foot_8_Bridge#Raising
