Interactive Fiction in Yuletide 2019

This is largely copy-pasted from the excellent posts of previous years (2017, 2016, 2015). Any new errors are mine.

Spreadsheet available here!

Are you interested in text adventures, CYOA, Twine games, or other sorts of interactive fiction? Do you want to let your writer know you'd be happy to receive something along those lines? Are you looking for someone to write IF for? This post is for you.

What is IF?

Interactive Fiction (IF) covers everything from text adventures through to visual novels, by way of all sorts of experimental works. It can be mostly a game, or mostly a story; it can be a way to immerse the reader, or to play around with the concepts of storyteller and audience; it can be an exploration of chance, or of fate; it can be a straightforward story, or something else entirely. From Healy's post:

[IF] is a term used for games which are made up primarily of text, like Adventure, Zork, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and other text adventures, or more experimental hypertext works like My Father's Long, Long Legs, or even visual novels. Interactive fiction these days is generally divided into two groups based on how you interact with the game: parser-based IF, and choice-based IF.

Parser-based IF, more commonly known as text adventures, are controlled by typed in commands, like "GET KEY", "OPEN DOOR", "GO NORTH", "LOOK UNDER BED", and stuff like that. Not every command you type in will work, though, so they're hard to get used to if you haven't tried them before. To make things easier, here's a card of most of the common commands. Some good parser-based IF to try first would be Ryan Veeder's So, You've Never Played a Text Adventure Before, Huh?, Admiral Jota's Lost Pig, Andrew Plotkin's The Dreamhold, and Adam Cadre's Photopia.

Choice-based IF is simpler; you just pick from a number of options. This can be done through hyperlinks and other clicky selections, though more rarely you may have to type a number from a list. Good examples of choice-based IF include Anna Anthropy's Star Court, Alan DeNiro's Solarium, the various games hosted by Choice of Games, and most every given visual novel.

Writing IF for Yuletide

IF is considered opt-in for Yuletide - please don't write it for people who don't want it. If you aren't sure whether it would be welcome or not, ask a mod to check with the intended recipient.

You are still required to follow the normal rules, such as focusing on requested characters (unless the recipient has said you needn't include them all).

If you're writing a treat, unless you're sure your recipient would be happy with it as a main gift, either post it to Madness or wait till they have another full-length gift posted.

It can be hard to figure out what word count an IF story really is - what you've written is full of code that doesn't count, and what your recipient sees may vary in length depending on their choices. If you're posting to the main collection, try to overshoot the minimum requirement a bit, just to be on the safe side. Say a minimum of somewhere between 2,000 and 4,000 words. Or probably about 10 to 15 minutes play through.

If your post to the main AO3 collection is under 1,000 words (e.g. you're just linking to an online playable version elsewhere), please drop the mods a note so they know it isn't someone posting something under the minimum, and provide them with an estimated word-count.

Your recipient does need to be able to access what you've created! Please link to a suitable IF interpreter if required, or if possible make a web-playable version.

Requesting IF for Yuletide

If you would be happy to receive IF this year, please leave a comment below, following this template:

Please do stick to the template! This streamlines my loading it into the spreadsheet.

IF Canons Nominated for Yuletide

Plenty of IF canons get nominated for Yuletide! While it's still important to ask before writing IF for someone, someone who consumes IF already will probably be more interested in getting it. (Some of these canons were adapted into other mediums, so it's possible that someone who's interested in one of those isn't at all into the IF side of things. Thus why it's important to ask.) Consider requesting or offering one of these if you're interested in IF for Yuletide. Where possible, the below links are to play the games, but some of them aren't available online; some of them also cost money. I do not know every canon nominated; if you know of an IF canon that isn't on this list, or I have accidentally added a non-IF canon to this list, please comment to let me know!

Some IF Tools

This is from Healy's and quillori's lists from previous years. A * means they can make web-based games.

Parser-based
Inform*: One of the biggest development tools for making parser-based IF. Has an English-like code. Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Quest*: Another big IF development tool. Has a click-and-point editor with the option to check out the code. For Windows and web.
TADS*: A long running engine for writing interactive fiction, though generally not as easy to use as Inform. The latest version can make web-based games, although they need to be hosted on a non-https address or on the IFDB.

Choice-based
Twine*: Very popular tool for making choice-based IF. Has a visual editor, with some code-y bits for variables and the like. Can be extended with some Javascript passages. Available for Mac and Windows, and Twine 2 is web-based. See this comment for more notes.
ChoiceScript*: Used by the fine folks over at Choice of Games. Uses simplified Javascript to make games. It's very stat heavy. Requires a text editor. See this comment for notes.
Ren'py: Engine for making visual novels. Uses a simple scripting language. Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and can make games for all those platforms.
Inklewriter*: A completely web-based engine for making CYOA-style games.

Aside from Affairs of the Court: Choice of Romance, here are some other games made using ChoiceScript that are in the tagset for this year!

The Mysteries of Baroque
The Wayhaven Chronicles
The Fallen Hero series

Fandom 1: Desert Peach
Fandom 2: Stinz
Fandom 3: Bosom Enemies

Anything else: I have a very soft spot for dating Sims. Not just the romantic kind, but also the ones with character-focused, possibly platonic routes. I'd love to see something like that for Desert Peach or Stinz!

I'd also be happy for something that deals with slice-of-life in both fandoms. Löwards trying to mend a fence or find something pre-war (I would love some oppertunity to explore the Gieselthal and it's inhabitants.)? Trying to sneak past Kirschen at the barracks?

For Desert Peach, some zany camp life would be great. Chasing Dobermann? Trying to hide an allied tank? Great Afrikakorps Bakeoff?

Of course, if you have other ideas, I'm all for it.

Hi! Correction on Affairs of the Court: the second author's name is Adam Strong-Morse, not Andrew.

(Not the nominator, but I work for Choice of Games, so I am happy to answer questions about all things CoG, Hosted Games, and ChoiceScript!)

One fandom nominated this year that's in an IF format/IF-adjacent is Netflix's Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018), a choice-based branching story originally scripted in Twine, conveyed in the format of streaming video with selectable path options. It's a psychological horror story about a young man trying to adapt an allegedly cursed gamebook into a computer game in 1980s Britain, with mixed results. It's streaming on Netflix and if anybody's curious but would like content warnings/spoilers, let me know.

Fandom 2: Mary Reilly - Valerie Martin (Mary Reilly)
Fandom 3: AMC's The Terror (Cornelius Hickey)
Fandom 4: The Turn Of The Screw - Henry James (Miles, Flora)
Anything else: I'm familiar with pretty much all the major IF formats (parser-based, Twine, visual novels, gamebooks/CYOA, etc.) -- I have almost no experience with visual novels and likely won't get the full benefit of anything in that format but anything else is fair game. I especially love IF that's set in a single location (the different rooms of a house, for instance) or dealing with horror/mystery themes, but I'm hopeless at classic-IF-style puzzles, so if you love elaborate puzzles I'd love a cheat-sheet for my dense self.

Fandom 2: Beanworld (Comics)
Fandom 3: Rainbow Magic Series - Daisy Meadows
Fandom 4: Bernice Summerfield (Books & Audio)

Anything else: I have a soft spot for IF, especially Twine games - since I've done a fair few myself over the years. Stuff that leans into the format and the interactivity and pushes the limits of what it can do - it's all very cool and excellent.

Fandom 2: Fallen Hero series (Video Games)
Fandom 3: Cinderella Phenomenon (Visual Novel)
Fandom 4: Magical Otoge Ciel (Visual Novel)
Fandom 5: Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World

Anything else: I am most familiar with ChoiceScript and Twine, but would be absolutely pleased to receive any sort of IF! Visual Novels are great, gamebook-style IF is amazing, parser-based IF is fun, anything goes!

I just love the feel of being able to direct the narrative. Destiny and fate are some of my favorite themes to explore, and I find how IF interacts with those themes very interesting. That being said, I absolutely do not require that the choices have to "matter"; I'm okay with branching narratives that converge back into a single storyline again, and I'm also okay with widely varying endings.

I won't have access to anything that is Windows-only (or, I could, but I'm still trying to figure out how Wine works), so I'd prefer something that can be web-based if at all possible.

I'm not that great at puzzles, but if there was a walkthrough made available somewhere, I definitely would not mind receiving a puzzle-based game either!

Since the source material is interactive, I think it would be really fun to see interactive fiction for "The Lab". Maybe have an interactive story from the point of view of Greg, or an AU with research misconduct in another setting, or one that explores the more personal aspects of what Greg did to the lab.

I think it could also be really fun to have interactive fiction set during the torture experiment era of The Good Place, where you play as Eleanor or Michael navigating one of the loops.

Anything else: I really like IF that takes advantage of the medium to play around with the way games give us a sense of choice even while they tell limited narratives--things that show that your decisions make differences but can't always make the changes you anticipate or desire. I'm most familiar with Twine games, but I'm game for any sort of IF a person might be interested in making.

Anything else: I'd be delighted by choice- or parser-based IF. Also, I'm up for any POV, multiple endings or a single click-through story. I'd love worldbuilding/exploratory style IF, or things heavily reliant on different routes and choices, or anything that takes advantage of the medium.

Fandom 3: A Taste of Honey - Kai Ashanti Wilson - Any

Anything else: I most enjoy dark, choice-based IF where almost all paths lead to your doom. That sense of being trapped, and having to work through many bad endings to earn a good one, really works for me!

* For Kingdom, trying to get out of a zombie-infested town as the sun sets OR trying to make it through the murderous politics of the capitol without getting eaten alive by the metaphorical or literal monsters.

* For 221b Baker Towers, Sherlock just trying to make it through one damn day with himself and John alive and free. Maybe it’s really happening, maybe he’s blazed and his own powers of deduction are spinning out of control and driving him round the bend – your call. If I, as the reader, can’t tell, either, more power to you.

* In A Taste of Honey, the monstrous Sybil's fragmented view of the many future possibilities and probabilities as she sends Lucrio to Olorum to meet his love, anticipating his bitter tears.

In this, I'm asking for Immanuel Kant/Aliens (or & Aliens), based on one of his books where he talks about a species of rational beings that can speak only aloud. It would be a cool thing to explore in an interactive format.

Anything else: I am equally happy with both parser-based and CYOA IF. I'm happy for it to land anywhere on the various axes of "game" vs "simulation" vs "story"; I do enjoy puzzles, as long as they aren't insanely difficult to work out. On the more story-ish end, I do enjoy it when there isn't an obvious "good ending", or at least where it's left open to interpretation whether any particular ending is good or not. On the fanworks end, I do enjoy little details in how things are presented that call back to canon, if that makes sense (e.g. making the interface look like something in-universe), though I realise that's very tricky so it's very much an optional extra!

I rarely write about IF, so I hope this is helpful! I've played mostly games which rely on reading text and clicking on text/making choices--for example, like Alabaster, The Book of Guenevere, visual novels, dating sims, and paper books where you turn to a page for every choice--but I'm open to receiving something different if the program is small and easily accessible. I use Windows 7 and Apple mobile devices.

This is also in my letter!

Anything else: The IF that I'm used to is the Choices app type, but I also really enjoyed Affairs of Court: Choice of Romance. I'm totally down to try parser-based stuff, I'm just a big dummy so you may need to leave me instructions on how to make that run.

In IF, I like any of the following:
--options for player to romance someone (bonus if player has option to be bi)
--options to meddle around politically
--options to get in a fight
--moral dilemmas
--that thingy in really cool IF where you can tell that your choices impacted the final ending and/or important events

but really I love all kinds of AUs etc and will take anything as long as it's not in my DNWs or graphic horror--there's someething about horror in IF that particularly freaks me out, and tbh, I have a weak stomach for horror already.

side note I have found Twine to be absolutely fantastic, and since philome.la isn't working anymore, I use neocities to do the final publish

Anything else: I have IF-specific prompts in my letter, but any prompt I leave is always optional; feel free to work with my general likes, a different prompt, or anything you can think of that doesn't cross my DNW. I like dark dark fic and super fluffy fic equally, so go in whatever direction you want! I have no preferences for POV; first/2nd/third of any type is good with me.

In general I love IF in pretty much every format. What I think is my favorite use of it is when it's used to explore a small moment and all the little ways it could change, whether that exploration is recursive or has multiple endings or whatnot. I think my favorite example of this is "A Kiss"
(Original Work) where it focuses on a simple kiss between two characters, and spirals out into how they got into the kiss, what's going on in the house around the kiss, what was happening the minute before and the minute after. I basically love a very small moment, and all the ways that might have happened, or could have been, or just different information all gathered around a central point. Short and sweet is awesome, as is super long, and I like everything in-between two. :)

Fandom 1: Chess (Board Game)
* A correspondence chess simulator? Framed as a game between old friends, or strangers on a chess website? A chess A.I. that is more than it seems? (I love both sweet slice-of-life stories, and horrifying creepypasta/Windows 95 tips type stories.)
* A chess puzzle, from the POV of a chess piece? Nontraditional solutions (like attempting to escape off the edge of the board... alas, it wraps around?) are very much loved.

Fandom 2: Robot Series - Isaac Asimov
* I would love a Daneel sim of some sort, whether he's going about a case or about his day. What does a typical day look like for him? How do Aurorans treat him, and vice versa?
* A dating/friendship sim around Baley would also be very much adored.

Anything else: If you're working in parser I would appreciate a walkthrough. Otherwise, go wild :) (I am intentionally leaving this completely open so you have free rein!)

Fandom 1: Epistory - Typing Chronicles (Video Game)
Fandom 2: Knitter's Almanac - Elizabeth Zimmermann
Fandom 3: Oxford Time Travel Universe - Connie Willis
Fandom 4: Toliver's Secret - Esther Wood Brady
Anything else: I'm not very good at playing parser-based IF; I'm totally up for giving it a try, but please don't make it super difficult! As regards choice-based/CYOA, I'll soften my dislike of character death: as long as one ending (that I can pretend in my head is the "real" ending) doesn't contain non-canonical major character death, I don't mind if you include it in the rest of the story.

A few non-comprehensive possibilities for each of the fandoms:

Epistory - Perhaps some snippet of the canonical adventures but with the fox—or one of the creepy-crawlies, or an unseen observer, or whoever—as the protagonist? Feel free to require lots of typing, since this is originally a typing game...or play in any way with the interaction and overlap between words and pictures that is a bit of a theme in the game. For a CYOA, perhaps something where the protagonist doesn't always successfully escape the origami world.
Knitter's Almanac - EZ decides to add a 13th chapter (for Octember?) and considers various options for what she could knit in it. Or just something that explores the process of knitting one of the projects in the book—particularly the stops and starts that must come when one is simultaneously designing it.
Oxford Time Travel Universe - Perhaps something exploring some of the work Ann did on the "Living Through the Blitz" exhibit, or Colin and Ann doing research at the British library. (If choice-based, perhaps something where sometimes Ann finds out or figures out about the existence of time travel, and sometimes she doesn't.)
Toliver's Secret - Perhaps something that follows Ellen Toliver on her journey (if choice-based, perhaps exploring the places where things could have gone better or worse than they did), or another adventure later in the war or after the war is over.
