Yule Be First

Yuletide is full of rare and small fandoms, but is your canon so rare its fandom is currently...non-existent? [Insert Twilight Zone Theme] Welcome to Yule Be First.

How does it work?
  • Yule Be First is a mini-challenge highlighting canons, pairings, or character(s) which currently have no works created for them on AO3. They may or may not even have a tag!
  • If your requested canon, pairing, or character fits that criteria, comment on this post so that those looking to be the first!1!!1! to create for it can give it a go.
  • Add participation to the app so that anyone browsing will know that you're signed up for this challenge!
  • Even if your recipient hasn't signed up for this mini-challenge, tag applicable works with Yule Be First so that interested parties can find them! This will be especially useful if the canon, pairing, or character tag hasn't been wrangled by the time the collection opens.
That's it. Have fun!

For anyone who needs help on how to get their comment going, here is a template:

Templar Knight Mysteries

[personal profile] ermingarden 2021-11-04 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
(I'm Ermingarden on AO3, and my letter is here.)

The Templar Knight Mysteries series by Maureen Ash features found family, complex relationships with religion, and engaging mysteries, all in an impeccable medieval setting!

Bascot de Marins, a Templar knight, returns to England at the end of the twelfth century after almost a decade of captivity. While recovering from his wounds, he spends time in the service of Nicolaa de la Haye, the formidable castellan of Lincoln Castle, and catches murderers with the able assistance of a mute Italian boy named Gianni – Bascot's servant in name, but his son in heart.

The series is now eleven books long (Crusade of Murder came out in May and isn't on the Goodreads series page yet), but each one can stand alone; in my opinion, the first few are the best. If your local library doesn't have copies, some of the earlier books can be read on the Internet Archive, and all of them are available as Kindle ebooks.

Fandom(s): I requested two Norwegian TV shows that are widely available with excellent English subtitles but have no fic yet on the AO3.

Okkupert | Occupied (TV 2015) - Irina Sidorova, Wenche Arnesen
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: This 16-episode show is the most nuanced political thriller I've ever seen. The opening credits show a man carrying a child through the streets of a flooded city. In the first episode that man, just elected as Norway's PM, decides to cut off all oil and gas production to stave off the climate crisis. The EU and Russia are outraged and use a combination of fiscal and military threats to subtly, quietly take over in Norway; things get very ugly, very fast.

Occupied isn't afraid to take its large cast of interesting, sympathetic characters to some dark places. It explores themes of resistance, radicalization and terrorism, privacy and freedom vs security, misinformation, propaganda, immigration, and the vulnerabilities of modern democracies.

If you're into very smart, competent people being pushed past their moral limits, you'll love this show.

Check out The Norwegian TV series that’s enraged the Kremlin!
WHERE CAN I FIND IT (optional): Netflix

Fremvandrerne | Beforeigners (TV) - Alfhildr Enginnsdótti, Urðr Sighvatsdóttir
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Did you love Vikings? Are you into murder mysteries? Police procedurals? How about time-travel? Norway has struggled to deal with immigrants and refugees. But what if those refugees came from the past? Vikings and Victorians and stone-age humans, oh my!

Our main character, Alfhildr Enginnsdótti, was once a Viking shield maiden and is the first time refugee to join the modern Norwegian police force. Her partner is a cynic, a junkie, and less than thrilled. The two of them are assigned to solve the murder of another time refugee, and as the show goes on, the plot gets twistier and twistier.

Fandom: The Other Two (available on HBOMax in the U.S.)
Pairing: Brooke Dubek/Lance Arroyo

This is, no joke, one of the funniest shows airing right now, at least in my opinion. It's a half-hour single-cam comedy that's a little bit about a teen kid who gets famous Justin Beiber-style, but mostly about his two aspirant older siblings (the titular Other Two) who are just trying to get by and make it on their own. And I am rooting so hard for Brooke, and Lance cracks me up every time he's on screen. More details and prompts in my letter, linked above. I'd love for you to introduce them to the archive!

Fandom(s): Last Scenario (Video Game)

Additional Details: The tag is helpfully existent thanks to a single work containing meta essays, but I have not been able to find a single fic for this on AO3 or ff.net. I wrote a promo comment for this fandom here, which includes both links for where to download it (it's free!) and links to a video playthrough and an article-with-screenshots playthrough for people who prefer alternatives to video.

This is a long(er) game- my playthrough took 56 hours (including every optional boss except the final optional one you only get after completing the game, which has no backstory, unlocks no cut scenes, and exists for bragging rights only). So I am also going to note here that I really do not need you to play the entire thing through to write me fic.

Matilda and Thorve's dynamic can be witnessed from the first real mission you get in-game (sure, Thorve has a spoilery backstory, but since he doesn't talk about it to anyone you can just write a fic where, as per canon, no one around him knows and he himself doesn't discuss it). Felgorn is introduced before the quarter mark of the game and his arc is completed by the half mark. Ethan is the trickiest character to pull off thanks to a full of spoilers character arc that continues until the very end of the game. But even for him, if you want to write a fic about him with an author's note "only played up to X storyline, probably jossed by any revelations thereafter", I am totally fine with that. Basically, if you play this game and like the characters enough to have some fic ideas for them, I am going to be pleased.

Fandom: Time and Again - JiUn Yun
Additional Details: Time and Again is a 6 volume manhwa about a hedonistic travelling exorcist with a dark past, who is accompanied by a guilt ridden swordsman and a ghost sword who glommed onto said swordsman. (Also his mentor has a dark past, and is also a heron.) It is mostly an anthology of traditional Korean folktales, often with a twist on the usual story, but later chapter contain the backstory of the various major characters.

It is currently out of print, but there are some second hand copies floating around on the net, and there are definitely some libaries (in Australia, at least) that have it.

Fandom(s): 8th Century CE RPF / Court of Charlemagne
Additional Details: Alas, there is quite the dearth of 8th century CE RPF, or early mediaeval stuff on Ao3 and other archives. But but! Isn't it awesome? History is your playground! The Carolingians had a rather interesting way of ruling a vast realm, as well as some rather lofty ideas how to justify their rule. And I'm not saying the Franks were the good guys here ;)
Charlemagne (Carolus the Great) keeps being portrayed as the first major unifying force in post-Roman Europe - but that is the victors speaking. Charlemagne's politics and his constant war-mongering were ruthless.

What I find tickling in particular is the strange case of Charlemagne versus Tassilo III (duke of Bavaria) which was in fact a judicial murder - Frankish sources were doctored later to make it look as if a bad vassal had been brought to heel. In reality, a sovereign lord (Tassilo) was lured into a trap, and he and his family were wiped out. Doesn't that beg to made into fiction? Oh yes.

Bonus inspiration: have a look at the magnificent Tassilo Chalice. [More info in German here, here, and here.]

Oliver Appropriate - Say Anything (Album)
promo postListen on SpotifyLyricsEvidence Post
This is an album by US alternative band Say Anything, released in 2019. It’s the sequel to their debut album …Is A Real Boy. It is available for streaming on all major streaming services, and also for purchase.

It focuses on a washed-up emo artist who hooks up with and falls in love with another man - and the disastrous consequences.
This is a darker and edgier canon, but it's not without hopefulness at the end.

Seducing the Sedgwicks - Cat Sebastian
See the Romance Novel post for places to find this!
This is a series of three romance novels; to my knowledge they retail at around $6 USD each from most major booksellers. My request focuses primarily on the third instalment, Two Rogues Make A Right - other instalments are not needed for this request.
The entire series is set in Regency England, and Two Rogues Make a Right focuses on a sickly nobleman (Martin Easterbrook) and his childhood friend with PTSD from a particularly nasty experience in the Navy (Will Sedgwick). The bulk of the novel takes place in the countryside, but some of it does take place in London. There is a pretty diverse cast - the main couples in the series are all gay/bi, from various class/social backgrounds, and Will's brother Hartley is in a relationship with a Free Black man, Sam.

There's more info on both in my letter!

Fandom(s): Bath Tangle - Georgette Heyer.
Additional Details:
There are 4 fics for this book on AO3, but not for my requested characters & pairing of Fanny Carlow/Hector Kirkby.
You can find links to more info and to read the book online at the Romance Novel post. The main setup is that Serena Carlow's father dies unexpectedly - and he'd neglected to mention that he'd appointed her ex-fiance Ivo Rotherham to be one of the trustees of her inheritance. Serena and her father's widow Fanny (who despite being Serena's stepmother is younger than her) then move to Bath where they run into Serena's childhood sweetheart Hector Kirkby.
If you're familiar with Georgette Heyer's work then you know what to expect, though the title isn't kidding the relationships here do get in quite a tangle! There's a lot going on (including a number of things important to the story that happen off screen), but I find it quite a fun and charming read, and I love both the romantic relationships but also the other dynamics, especially how the book subverts what you might expect from the step-mother setup by giving Fanny and Serena a lovely friendship.
From what I've heard people seem to love it (or not) based on their feelings towards Serena and Ivo who are quite a headstrong (but well-matched) pair, but my preference (and request) is for the B couple of the novel, Fanny and Hector who in contrast are a couple of cinnamon rolls.

Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992)
Additional Details: There are just under 40 stories for the fandom itself, the original BTVS film, on AO3, but none at all for my requested pairing, Amilyn/Lothos, with only four that tag Amilyn at all, and only nine that tag Lothos.

The BTVS film is painfully neglected in contrast to the different canon of the (Yuletide-ineligible) TV series, and a lot of the fanfiction that's tagged with BTVS 1992 is misplaced series fic (going to the tag "Buffy the Vampire Slayer 1992" lists just short of 150, but only 48 if you filter out all TV show characters, and that's not a lot for a fandom linked to one so much bigger!).
