Yulebuilding
Greetings, everyone! Yuletide contains multitudes, and a chunk of those multitudes would really like to request worldbuilding. Thus, here is a sub-challenge post for those of us who love worldbuilding, either on the giving or receiving end. This year, we even got to nominate Worldbuilding as a character tag! Exciting!
To participate
It's not necessary to interact with Yulebuilding in any way to give or request worldbuilding for Yuletide, but this post is here to make finding other aficionados easier. Enjoy!
To participate
- Leave a comment on this fic with a link to your letter if you are interested in receiving worldbuilding. Optionally, add any extra worldbuilding likes and prompts you may have into your comment.
- If you don't have a letter, you can still leave prompts here! Please ensure your comment includes your AO3 username, requested fandoms, and any characters you're requesting.
- When uploading your fic to the archive, tag it with Yulebuilding and Worldbuilding so the rest of us can find it!

The fandoms I have asked for are as follows. Only two of them had the worldbuilding tag for me to use, but I'm open to receiving worldbuilding for all of them.
Divinity: Original Sin - Sebille and Worldbuilding.
Enola Holmes - Enola Holmes and Viscount 'Tewky' Tewksbury.
Big Sky - Cassie Dewell and Jenny Hoyt.
Strictly Come Dancing RPF - John Whaite and Johannes Radebe.
Young Dracula - Erin Noble, Dracula and Vladimir Dracula.
Cirque du freak: The Vampire's Assistant - Darren Shan, Larten Crepsley, Steve "Leopard" Leonard and Worldbuilding.

For the Deep series, I'd especially love found document type stories playing with the mixed media format from the books: transcripts from the survivors of the Melucine, Hallie’s lexicon of mermaid sign, Tori & Louis’s scientific presentation of their findings, emails between Oliva and/or Ray and the Imagine Network, Imagine Network's "confidential" records about the other cryptids they've stumbled across, etc.
For "The Proper Thing," I'm incredibly interested in the magic shops we don't visit: what kind of items do they sell, how was the magic centered on those objects anyway, are there any species of animal that should never for any reason be changed the way Maisie, Valentine, and the others were?

Some general starting points to explore with worldbuilding: Magic/advanced tech and the implications on daily life; educational systems and academia; dance, music, art, and any other creative acts; ritual, religion, and spirituality; culture clashes, politics, etc.; architecture and accessibility, especially in settings with multiple sentient species with differing body structures.
The fandoms where "worldbuilding" is explicitly a tag have extended worldbuilding-specific prompts as well. Even the fandoms that don't have that tag include prompts that touch on worldbuilding elements I'd love to see, though!

The Islanders - Christopher Priest
[no characters nominated]
(Read for free here: https://booksvooks.com/fullbook/the-islanders-pdf-christopher-priest.html?page=1)
I'm interested in so many worldbuilding things for this! See my letter for them all, but:
+I’m curious about the creepy fear towers! What’s going on with them? I’m interested in the history of the towers—how and by whom were they built? What are the snaky things? What was it like when people tried (successfully or unsuccessfully) to pull them down?
+Write in-universe documents like origin myths for the winds named The Gargler, The Mantrap, and/or The Poisoner!
+Create your own original island(s) or expand on the lore about existing islands!
Crossing - Shaun Tan
Cat, People on the Cat's Head
(see the painting here: https://beinart.org/products/shaun-tan-crossing-limited-edition-print-of-300-48-3x33cm-19x13)
See my letter for more, but:
+Is the cat really big, or are the people really small? Or are there standard-sized people for whom the cat is small and then there are even smaller, Stuart Little-sized people that can ride on the cat?
+Can the cat talk?
+Are there lots of giant cats? How did they come to be? Misfired spell, or intentional spell, or that’s just the way cats are?
+Who made the decision to take the journey? Maybe the cat kidnapped the people, or the people asked the cat to take them, or it was a mutual journey. Did they know each other before the Crossing?
Le Città Invisibili | Invisible Cities - Italo Calvino
Worldbuilding
(Read for free here: https://booksvooks.com/nonscrolablepdf/invisible-cities-pdf-italo-calvino.html)
See my letter for more prompts and my favourite cities, but:
+Write about one of the cities! My favourites are above, but I’m willing to be swayed by your interest in a different city. I’m here for zoomed-out type writing about the city in general or what the neighbouring cities think of it, but also here for stories about one or more inhabitants/visitors and what their daily life is like.
Also totally cool to invent one or more original cities. Write a travel guide to them, or write about them in the style of the novel, or write about their inhabitants! Go wild! I’d be particularly interested in a city located underwater, underground, or in space (the International Space Station except it’s a city?!).

Alpennia (which already has the worldbuilding character tag): I'd like more about Margerit's school, scholarship (by women) in general, and/or alchemy.
Fare Well Edinburgh Hogmanay 2020 Drone Show: what if the drones are sentient, individually or as a hive mind? Is the show secretly, or even openly, a magical ritual to bring the new year? And in that case, what other magic can be done with drones?
Duolingo Welsh Course: Behind the scenes! What do these people do between snatches of the student's attention that makes them say and do such strange things when the student is there?

This year I've asked for it in three of my fandoms:
Cozy Grove (Video Game)
* How the Spirit Scouts operate! (We get hints and glimpses from Scoutmaster Blake, but I find it absolutely fascinating! Their world is not our own, most definitely.)
The Expression Amrilato (Visual Novel)
* I'd love to see more of the world. Maybe more into the canon history of how this came about (and how Esperanto became Juliamo), more stories about the visitantoj and their lives and their decisions to stay or leave, or the natives and how they deal with a world where there are a lot of newcomers. If something else inspires you, have at it!
Fantasy Life:
* I'm interested in anything with this world, but especially where do all these people live? There are only a few houses in each town, and nobody seems to go home at night. Especially the NPCs for each Life.

Some more specific prompts for each fandom are detailed in my letter, but in general I love worldbuilding that focuses on mythology, histories, and evolution of magic and magical arts. I also love worldbuilding in space opera AU settings where magic and technology overlap, and worldbuilding gets into history of space travel & exploration, and how these things interact with and re-shape existing mythologies.

The Borrible Trilogy - Michael de Larrabeiti
Worldbuilding (The Borrible Trilogy)
It's been decades since I've read the books but the concept still intrigues me. The series is very UK '70s culture and I'd love any exploration of Borribles in other places and times. Borribles in any other country facing local mythical enemies, Borribles in spaaace (hiding in the vents with their little spacesuits while the Captain vents the ship to get rid of the 'vermin'), Borribles in antiquity (especially Ancient Egypt), Neanderthal Borribles (first instance of mutation, gets clipped with stone knife and passes the mutation on to ALL human species, the hobbit people were Borribles), how did the medieval Catholic church view Borribles?, Borribles responsible for all little people/changeling myths? I'd also be interested in psychological exploration of Borribles being clipped and growing up; I can't imagine them becoming responsible citizens. You're welcome to use the canon characters, OCs or crossovers so long as I can enjoy it as OW. Example: (Ineligible fandom, don't use) Harry Potter, Snape and Riddle were all abused kids who could have run away to become Borribles. This would be before they became canon enemies, so it would be cool to explore them as friends and equals. Also, is not Umbridge Sussworth's clone? If you want to Borrible your eligible fandom and it meets the worldbuilding request, feel free.

My letter is here and I have requested worldbuilding for Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, the short story "This Is New Gehesran Calling", and Piranesi. I also requested character fic for The Radiant Emperor series, but if my writer would rather focus on worldbuilding, that's awesome too.
Further particulars at the letter.

I nominated Exalted for Worldbuilding, because it's a fantastic world for people coming up with their own inventions as to how everything should be. You can fit incredible, bizarre things into the spaces of Creation, and everyone has their own idea of what in canon is wrong and ought to be replaced too.
Prompts:
Tell me about an island you think floats in the Western sea, or a character who escaped the Tidemothers by some trickery. Tell me your take on the Lintha.
Write me an extract from an Imperial history book about the rising of the Realm; and/or contrast it with an Outcaste version of the story.
Recount a Lunar poem about their efforts in the war against the Dragonblooded, or about the encroaching Wyld, or how one of her Exalted thinks about Luna herself. (Special "I am a 1e super-grognard" prompt: is she really a Celestine, or something else?)
What's it like as you approach each of the Poles?
How did your setting find out about the Alchemicals, if it wasn't the Locust War/Locust Crusade?
How does it feel for a Solar, a Lunar, a Sidereal, a Dragonblooded, and an Abyssal to take their Second Breath?
Write some sutras in the classic Sidereal style for a new Sid Martial Art. (Actual Martial Arts description or mechanics not necessary). "There Once Was A Maiden ..."
Rip something you don't like out of canon and replace it with your preferred idea.
Additional inspiration sources: two rather old forum threads in the spirit of Exalted worldbuilding.

Worldbuilding likes: Anything and everything that digs into a fictional world is catnip to me, whether it's through exploring the effects of elements introduced in canon on the daily lives of people (either canon characters or OCs), in-universe documents etc., or just loving detailed descriptions of the history of X region, the social implications of Y existing, or how Z technology works.
Requested fandoms
Chess - Rice/Ulvaeus/Andersson
This is a close-to-real-world canon, but I am definitely open to explorations about the way it differs from our world (does the course of the Cold War change because of canon events? Freddie is very clearly a Bobby Fischer expy but does he take over Bobby Fischer's role in the history of chess more generally, or are they rivals, probably each claiming to have come up with various ideas? etc.)
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
I've specifically requested "Worldbuilding" here
1066 and all that
I'm not sure whether things for this would strictly count as "Worldbuilding" but the sort of bad-history-explanations that the canon itself is made of definitely strike me as worldbuilding-adjacent, at least?
Jupiter Ascending
I've specifically requested "Worldbuilding" here
The Avengers (TV 1961)
This wasn't my nomination or I would probably have included the tag, but worldbuilding around the fantastic and/or hi-tech spy elements very welcome.
Star Wars: Doctor Aphra (Comics)
Space archaeology/ancient Jedi artifacts/etc. type worldbuilding always very welcome for this canon.

I am a big fan of worldbuilding and would be happy to see it incorporated in a gift for any of my requests. I asked for the new worldbuilding tag in two canons:
The Expanse (TV): I’m specifically interested in Belter and/or Martian culture, and how these 'nationalities' developed over time.
Obduction (Video Game): I’d love worldbuilding fic that expands on what we know of the alien worlds and their species, and on the history of Hunrath and the people who have been transported there.
Many prompts for both of these are in my letter!
no subject
One fandom I requested solely worldbuilding in - Machineries of Empire Series - Yoon Ha Lee (prompts in the letter)
and two other fandoms I would love to get worldbuilding in if the urge takes you:
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous - some bonus prompts if you want them: What's it like back in Nerosyan, with news of the Crusade from afar? How does your favourite ending ripple out over Golarion?
Black Box - Jennifer Egan which is a short story, available free at https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2012/06/04/black-box - I would especially love something that was like an academic study or magazine article or something about the Citizen Agents once they are history / the secret is out?

I have a particular fondness for unexpected consequences or uses of technology; emergent behavior; the strange creativity that crops up in response to technical limitations (think about how people use the "location" field of their Twitter bio to list their pronouns, or make ASCII art, or encode an entire video as individual pixels in a subtitle file).

Fandoms: Starlight Brigade — TWRP music video, Rune Factory 3 (video game), Monster Prom (video game), Spiritfarer (video game)
Likes:
Fantasy elements, logical reasoning for in-universe mechanics or features of a game, backstories to locations and people, all those little details that really sell a place, such as unique features, geography, culture, etc.
Starlight Brigade prompts:
— Culture: What do they eat? Do they have any seasonal traditions or customs? (Me being me, what about courting rituals?) What are Strive’s people’s beliefs/faith, if they have any? Any social nuances that could land you in hot water if you say the wrong thing or make the wrong gesture?
— Geography: How large is this planet? Does it rain? Is it more of a tundra situation, or are there grasslands/forests in other places? What’s the population of Strive’s hometown and are they the only people on this planet, or do they have trade routes with other groups? Does tourism exist?
— Biology: They bleed purple blood, as evidenced by Strive’s one injury. What’s up with that? Why are their ears so floof? Why is their skin blue, with some characters having two-toned skin (two shades of blue, one lighter)? Do they age like humans, or do they have a Yoda situation where it takes a long time to age?
— Magic: It looks like a lot of people have gemstones in their chests. Is it some sort of custom to get one then, as we saw Strive do as a child? Are these gemstones somehow connected to the fading light that was recovered?
— Misc.: How did these people survive on this desolate land? Maybe some creative thinking was at play there. What other races are there in the universe? Is there sunlight here or only the aurora borealis-eqsue lights?

Fandom and character(s): The Philosopher's War
Prompts: There's so much worldbuilding potential in this one. You could explore sigils not covered in detail in the books, other uses of sigils that are featured (even though hovering is extensively featured, I love it, so I'd be equally happy for more of it), pre-canon history, post-canon developments, other cultures' practice, cool gadgets and the people and places that develop and supply them, organization and traditions of women-led institutions, maybe even philosophical/academic topics like the idea that sigilry/empirical philosophy is not magic or the science of quanta/philosophical energy or the history of the endurance flight event in the General's Cup and its many many subsequently banned innovations.

More details in my letter but some prompts:
You Can’t Sit With Us - Sunmi (Music Video) - Any (Girl Gang Leader, Girl Gang Member with Slicked Back Hair, Girl Gang Member with Pink Machine Gun, Worldbuilding)
-This definitely had a mix of retro vibes - flip phones and video stores, etc, with the song itself and the apartment more 80s - was this set in an alternate universe? A simulation? A video game? Or did they create this world themselves as a nostalgic refuge?
-What do celebrations look like in this world? Holidays, weddings, etc? Funerals? Did they have a fourth member of their gang that died in battle or something? How do they mourn?
-How did the world get to where we see it in the video? I’d be down for an unusual format for this one - letters/reports/diaries/other in-universe documents. Or an origin story for one or more of the women
-How do the women keep their hair and clothes and makeup perfect in a zombie apocalypse? Is magic involved?
Zombie Detective | 좀비탐정 - Kim Moo Young/Kang Min Ho, Gong Sun Ji
-This is such a cracky canon anyway so feel free to embrace that! Do you want to tell me about zombie rights activists? Or making zombie laws? Or all the bureaucracy that comes with being a zombie in a human world? Please go for it!
-Or you could tell me about other supernatural creatures existing in this world. Vampires? Werewolves? Gumihos? Ghosts? How do they all come to be and how do they interact - both with each other and the human world? One of my favourite parts about this show was the explanation of how he was a zombie but also functional enough to pass for human, so feel free to lean into that.
Automatic (1995) - J269, Nora Rochester
-What happens after the movie ends? What do they learn about the world? Are there other cyborgs out there? What other technology exists? Are they being hunted? This is a great opportunity to explore further world-building!
반도 | Peninsula (2020) (aka Train to Busan 2) - Jung Seok, Min Jung, Joon Yi, Yoo Jin
-More details about what the world is like outside of Korea now that they've escaped? The characters are basically refugees now, so what's that process like? Where do they settle? Do people want to hear about their experiences?
-How are people from other nations dealing with a country overrun by zombies? How is this effecting their people and laws and relationships? Like, are there people asking for specific "in case of zombie" laws now? How is the "zombie problem" solved? What's the politics surrounding this?
Free Guy (2021) - Millie Rusk, Walter “Keys” McKeys
-You could tell me more details about the game they've built and what life inside Free Life is like or how it works.
-What's the future of AI now they've built this incredible engine? How is it used?
I'm happy with any other ideas if you have them, too!

Astielle - Anything! I'm super intrigued for anything about the monsters - especially the ones we haven't seen any non-Karzarul examples of, like abysscales and shimmerbats and rootboars and Black Drakonis. But I'd also love anything about the mythology and how it has changed over time, or trade agreements, or that one churro place, or really anything about the bits of the world we've only seen a little tidbit of.
Boxcar children - I am obsessed with how the Boxcar Children books fit into the larger world the Boxcar Children live in. I'd love outside POV on the publicity around them (which we only get hints existed, but must have, because people keep recognizing them as the kids who lived in the boxcar for many books after.) I'd love outsider POV on them in general actually - OCs or any of the people they meet in the books. I'd also love something that engages with the way time passes in these books - how Henry grows up from age fifteen to college over the course of the first nineteen books, during which fifty years pass in the world around them - or anything that involves the Alden interacting with current events during the time the books are written. (The Aldens tour a missile silo? The Aldens and the Freedom Riders? The Aldens and the Summer of Love? The Aldens during the Great War? Henry Alden and the Selective Service?)
Rock Candy Mountain - anything that expands on this world would be great! I love the hobo world that we only see from a couple of perspectives, and I love that this is a world where magic and the Devil are very, very present. (Feel free to write me worldbuilding in this one that doesn't involve any of the requested characters, too.)
