Brainstorming 2015

By request, a Dreamwidth version of the LJ post.

We've had the Yuletide schedule, so that must mean it's time to start brainstorming!

What are you excited about nominating? What are you still on the fence about? What are you hoping to persuade someone else to nominate? Or do you just feel like sharing some squee?

Like last year, we get we get three fandom nominations each with up to four characters per fandom.

If you have any questions about Yuletide and how it runs, it's best to email yuletideadmin@gmail.com or comment on a post at [community profile] yuletide_admin, rather than commenting here.

*shamelessly crossposts*

Some things I'm excited about:

Yellow Flicker Beat - Lorde (Song)
Sucker Punch (2011)

and then...

The Glass Menagerie - Tennessee Williams
Yokai Ningen Bem (TV)
Soon I Will Be Invincible - Austin Grossman.

(If I can't choose between the last three I may collaborate with someone else on my last nomination slot.)

Crossposting from my own journal and from the LJ side.

At this moment, I have a few things that I am definitely nominating for Yuletide 2015.

1. The Jewel in the Crown (1981). Which characters? That would be tricky. Definitely Guy, Hari, Sarah and Ahmed. But Merrick really should be in there too, since he is basically the thing that connects all of the characters together. (And there's Barbie, Daphne Manners, Bronowsky, Captain Samuels...)

Hmmm. I think I will have to do some horse-trading with this.

2. This ridiculously adorable, ridiculously NSFW set of Victorian pornography. I mean both of those things!

3. Karen Dalton's rendition of Katie Cruel.

4. Gun Crazy! I forgot Gun Crazy. Definitely nominating Gun Crazy.

Zankyou no Terror- Nine, Twelve, and Lisa (if someone wants Five or the inspector, let me know)
Kekkai Sensen- Leo, Black, White, King of Despair
Ranpo Kitan- Hashiba, Kobaysahi, Akechi, Namikoshi

Also cross-posting from lj:

There are so many fandoms I want to nominate this year:

Giants' Star series by James Hogan
Sector General series - James White
Desert Peach - Donna Barr
Hell's Kitchen Season 12
James May's Manlab
Top Gear (UK)
Britain's Got Talent (Simon Cowell and David Walliams OTP)
Moody Blues RPF
Biggles - Books
Biggles- Movie
M*A*S*H (really want to offer/write treats for this)
Five Find-Outers and Dog series - Enid Blyton

I don't know how I'm going to whittle these down to three ::sob::

Is anyone else considering nominating any of these? Pretty please?

I've never written for Yuletide before so I may just do treats this year instead of fully signing up. But I may nominate and would love to read:

* Zen Cho's Sorcerer to the Crown [especially an aspect that is a spoiler]
* Pentametron (part of Twitter-Fandom)
* Glamourist Histories Series - Mary Robinette Kowal
* fix-it fic for the sexist bit of Baahubali: The Beginning
* Malcolm X RPF
* fix-it fic for comic DMZ, especially the portrayal of women, now that we know more about creator Brian Wood

Cross-posting from LJ as well:

It's so hard to narrow it down, but here's my list:

Bride of Boogedy (1987)
Fright Night (1985, 1988) (To include the sequel)
Legend (1985)
Dark Shadows (1991 version)
Ghostbusters (1984)
The Last Unicorn (1982) (in honor of the late Sir Christopher Lee)
Murder By Death (1976)

Over on the Livejournal nominations side, there's at least one other person considering giving The Last Unicorn a nomination. If it turns out that they won't go through with that particular nomination, then I will see if I can nominate the movie.

Crossposting from LJ (thank you for crossposting, by the way):

I'm currently looking at nominating three of Transformers: War for Cybertron, Transformers: Robots in Disguise 2015, Transformers: Robots in Disguise 2001, and Monument Valley. Also possibly Journey, but I'm not sure about that one. Haven't decided on characters, except for Monument Valley: Princess Ida, Totem, Ghost Queen, and Crows, aka the only characters in the game. Would anyone else be interested in any of these?

Also, I'd like to take this opportunity to shill Monument Valley. The game costs less than $5 and takes less than two hours to play, including the expansion pack, and is available for any iOS or Android smartphone or tablet. It's a gorgeous mostly-dialogue-free puzzle game with an intriguingly sparse plot and backstory that nevertheless manages some surprisingly powerful emotional punches.

Cross posting from LJ.

I have a long list of possibilities and no real preferences. (I'm fairly heavily medicated right now and simply don't care about much of anything. I'm really looking forward to not needing this medication any more.)

Let's see. I've gotten fics for the following in the past, but they still appeal to me.

The Witch Family - Eleanor Estes

Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians - Brandon Sanderson

Planet Ladder

But then there are all of these things that could be fun and that I've not gotten fic for before. Some of them, I'm not entirely sure there's any fic for at all.

Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman (TV) - But only for fic about the fictional characters. I'm uncomfortable with RPF generally, and RPF about kids... I'm definitely not on board with that. The only fic I've seen for this is on FFnet and appears to be self insert RPF.

Mother of Demons - Eric Flint

Sky High

Drujienna's Harp - Ellen Kindt McKenzie

The Princes of Earth - Michael Kurland

Morrow Series - H.M. Hoover

Mother of Demons - Eric Flint

Hellspark - Janet Kagan

Nuala series - Katharine Eliska Kimbriel

Alfreda books - Katharine Eliska Kimbriel

Athanarel books - Jane Lindskold

Brother to Dragons, Companion to Owls - Jane Lindskold

Ravirn books - Kelly McCullough

The Silver Crown - Robert C. O'Brien

Bureau 13 - Nick Pollatta - The novels based on the game rather than the game itself. I liked the books, but I've never played the game.

Ukiah Oregon series - Wen Spencer

Sector General series - James White

Judge Dee series - Robert van Gulik

Would anybody else be interested in any of these?

I'd be deeply interested in Robert C. O'Brien's The Silver Crown. I wonder where my copy went...

Do you mean Sherwood Smith's Athanarel books?
the_rck: (Default)

[personal profile] the_rck 2015-09-10 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Now that I've actually looked it up, what I want is the Athanor books by Jane Lindskold. I got the name wrong.

It's a duology. Changer is the first book. The second book was originally published as Legends Walking but has been rereleased by Obisidian Tiger (which I've never heard of before looking at Lindskold's website, so I'm assuming it's a small press) as Changer's Daughter.

The Athanor are magical beings of various sorts who live, hidden, in the real world. Many of them are human, at least in appearance, but some are animals. If I recall correctly, they're all unaging once they reach maturity. Some of them have magical powers; some don't.

The titular character, the Changer, is one of the two oldest of the Athanor and is a shapeshifter of incredible versatility. If I recall correctly, he's old enough to remember a time before humans. There's a large cast of characters with complicated histories-- If I'm recalling correctly, the same person was both Gilgamesh and King Arthur. Athena is a character, and so is Loki. The book does start with someone murdering the Changer's current family, all coyotes (or wolves?) as a way of getting his attention. There's not so much death after that. The daughter in the title of the other book is the Changer's only surviving coyote pup.

[personal profile] the_rck 2015-09-20 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I read The Silver Crown at exactly the right age for me. I built a lot of background around it (unfortunately, I've forgotten most of it). I think it may have been a source for my love of scary conspiracies. I still loved it when I reread it twenty years later, but it wasn't quite the same.

I liked The Silver Crown better than Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH (which, naturally, I read first because it was so widely available and recommended). I never quite clicked with Z for Zachariah, and Report from Group 17 was off putting for some reason (I don't remember a thing about it now, so I have no idea why I didn't care for it. I think I still have a copy, so I suppose I could reread).

Unfortunately, for health reasons, I'm not going to be able to do Yuletide this year. I was really hoping I could, but I'm going to be doing radiation therapy through the entirety of the writing period, and the odds of having to default if I did sign up are high enough that I don't want to risk it.

I'm inclining towards:

David Blaize -- E.F. Benson: David Blaize, Frank Maddox, Bags Crabtree, Hughes
The Cruel Sea -- Nicholas Monsarrat Keith Lockhart, George Ericson, Julie Hallam, John Morell
The Hill -- Horace Annesley Vachell: John Verney, 'Caesar' Desmond, Reginald Scaife [?]

but then, you know, there is The Riddle of the Sands: Carruthers, Davies, Dollmann, Clara Dollmann?

There are also a few people interested in writing fic for Oursin's [personal profile] the_comfortable_courtesan, which has a Cast of Thousands, all with great possible backstories &c. If I end up using a nomination on this it'll definitely include Mr MacD-, because gay Scottish Enlightenment utilitarian and probably some of Madame C-'s servants, because they are excellent.

(Cross-posting from LJ) I'm nominating some anime/manga:

Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi | Sunday Without God:
* Ai Astin
* Julie Sakuma Dmitriyevich
* Scar
* Dee Ensy Stratmitos

In a world without true death and with no new life being born, twelve-year-old gravekeeper Ai sets out on a journey, makes new friends, and generally helps everyone she meets. All twelve episodes are on Crunchyroll or Hulu.

Stray Little Devil:
* Akumachi Pam
* Linfa

A normal girl finds herself in a fantasy world where devils and angels have an uneasy truce, and she grows close to one standoffish angel in particular. All five volumes have been released in English.

Venus Versus Virus:
* Takahana Sumire
* Nahashi Lucia
* Nahashi Souichirou
* Lola

Two girls hunt ghostly zombies called "Viruses," and with each new trial they overcome together their bond grows stronger. The manga is eight volumes and all have been released in English, and all twelve episodes of the anime can be watched on Funimation's official site.

This year I'm feeling pretty excited about shoujo.

Gekkan nozaki-kun, oresama sensei, ore monogatari are what I'm planning on requesting.

I'll see what others nominate but maybe: genshiken, over lord, devil is a part timer, 15 rugby club, his favourite, or something else that catches my eye. :)

Wilder Mind - Mumford & Sons (album)
Da Vinci's Demons (TV)
Lots of possibilities for Shakespeare plays; will see what other people nominate
I mayyyy even nominate something off German television; I'm never sure if that's just a waste of noms as it's foreign-language, but the ladt exchange I participated in had a number of requests in German so might go for Tatort or something.
liadt: Fuji Maiden by Tamasaburo propped on elbow looking to right of frame (japp cup of tea)

From what I can tell, most of Shakespeare's plays are eligible:

All's Well That Ends Well - Shakespeare (6)
Antony and Cleopatra - Shakespeare (5)
As You Like It - Shakespeare (21)
Comedy of Errors - Shakespeare (1)
Coriolanus - Shakespeare (84)
Cymbeline - Shakespeare (3)
Henry IV Part 1 - Shakespeare (86)
Henry IV Part 2 - Shakespeare (37)
Henry V - Shakespeare (112)
Henry VI Part 1 - Shakespeare (6)
Henry VI Part 2 - Shakespeare (11)
Henry VI Part 3 - Shakespeare (10)
Julius Caesar - Shakespeare (75)
King John - Shakespeare (2)
King Lear - Shakespeare (21)
Love's Labour's Lost - Shakespeare (4)
Macbeth - Shakespeare (50) (78 on FFnet)
Measure for Measure - Shakespeare (9)
Merchant of Venice - Shakespeare (42)
Merry Wives of Windsor - Shakespeare (5)
Midsummer Night's Dream - Shakespeare (66) (79 on FFnet)
Much Ado About Nothing - Shakespeare (67) (22 on FFnet)
Othello - Shakespeare (46) (26 on FFnet)
Richard II - Shakespeare (150) (though this is misleading--most of the work is by six or seven writers)
Richard III - Shakespeare (61)
Taming of the Shrew - Shakespeare (15)
The Tempest - Shakespeare (60)
Titus Andronicus - Shakespeare (10)
Twelfth Night - Shakespeare (122) (7 on FFnet)
Two Gentlemen of Verona - Shakespeare (6)
Two Noble Kinsmen - Shakespeare (1)
Winter's Tale - Shakespeare (5)

Two that are probably ineligible this year:

Hamlet - Shakespeare (274)
Romeo And Juliet - Shakespeare (343) (164 on FFnet)

Cross-posting from the LJ post. Thanks so much for this one!

I'm obviously still undecided, but things I am seriously considering nominating for this year include:

Pillars of Eternity - this one is probably definite, unless someone else covers it.

"The Big Front Yard" by Clifford D. Simak - this novella was published in 1958, but turns out to be pretty easy to find.

"The Cookie Monster" by Vernor Vinge - I don't know how easy this one would be for people to find, but I've remembered this story for years and always wanted more. First published in 2003 in Analog and reprinted in several anthologies.

Gateway by Frederick Pohl - If I go with this one, I'm not sure if I should nominate just Gateway or the whole Heechee Saga.

Fools by Pat Cadigan - Out of print for years, but now available in an omnibus of her work.

I Remember You/Hello, Monster - I've seen this kdrama called both things in English and I'm not sure if it has an archive canonical.

Anyone have any thoughts on any of these?

The mess with the Hugos reminded me how much I love them. Gateway is my favorite (I think the concept of Gateway itself is fantastic), which was why I was considering just nominating it and saying people could use the others, but it wasn't required.

I think I'm going to go AI-heavy this year. :D Marathon again, and Ex Machina (SO MANY AVA FEELINGS), and possibly Colossus: The Forbin Project again, and then for a slight change of pace Destiny because VARIKS and also RASPUTIN and ERIS MORN and WEI NING THE TITAN QUEEN. ... so a combination of AI feelings and alien feelings and PUNCH ALL THE THINGS feelings.

Currently planning on nominating some non-English-language fandoms, from most obscure to least obscure:

한 녀학생의 일기 | Han Nyeohaksaengeui Ilgi | The Schoolgirl's Diary (2007)
One of the few North Korean movies to get any availability outside the country, it's available (at the moment, at least) with English subtitles on YouTube. It's a family drama about a teenage girl who struggles with her father's extended absences from home at a factory job. Not without the obligatory propaganda for Kim Jong Il, but the story does interesting emotional work with the concept of growing up.

Senkou no Night Raid | Night Raid 1931
Supernatural action-adventure espionage anime set in 1931 Shanghai, as the Japanese are occupying Manchuria. Would definitely like some more world- and character-building for this series.

Kurenai no Buta | Porco Rosso
The Studio Ghibli film about a former World War I air ace who has turned into a pig -- one of my most-loved animated films! Lots of potential for pre-canon and post-canon stories.

I am very, very excited about nominating Seven Kingdoms: The Princess Problem, assuming it qualifies. Technically it is just a demo and the full game won't come out until sometime in 2016, but the fandom is surprisingly active and there's a little bit of fic, too. Restricting the characters I nominate is going to be a trial, though. Maybe I can interest someone else in nominating, too.

Currently on my shortlist:

Bloody Jack Adventures by L.A. Meyer - sooo much femslash potential and/or crazy girl shenanigans!
Steerswoman series by Rosemary Kirstein - I am enchanted by the worldbuilding (also Bel/Rowan)
Mark of the Horse Lord by Rosemary Sutcliff - not enough fic for this book
Roma Eterna by Robert Silverberg - alternate history, SO MUCH worldbuilding potential!
Eternal Sky series by Elizabeth Bear - I wrote the first and so far only story for this last Yuletide, and I would love to see more!
Vikings - so many interesting characters and situations
Turn - ditto, plus Ben/Caleb, plus I kind of want Major Hewlett being awesome

Kamen Rider

Particularly I'm interested in W, OOO, Fourze, Wizard, and Drive. (I want fic about the Shift Cars!) I saw someone on the LJ post suggest Ghost but idk how much I care about it yet. I'm also really into Faiz lately but I haven't finished watching it, I should do that.

SCP Foundation

My femslash bias is obvious, I want to nominate SCP-2115-1-38 and her girlfriend D-7897. 1893 is also really interesting (and I swear I was considering this before I read Iteration D). I wonder if there's some code exploit that could be used to get a fic to display the reader's username...?

Neko Zamurai

It's a drama about a samurai who adopts a cat and it has no fics. None! idk what drama sites are good for watching online or I'd offer links, but raws and subs can be downloaded from nyaa.se and d-addicts.

I am SO THERE for Doctrine of Labyrinths *_* but I want a different set of characters than I think normally get nominated. I've been really feeling the Mehitabel, Enid, Stephen trio since my last re-read of the Mirador. (Also kind of loving on Kay after my last Corambis re-read, but I can't imagine someone offering all four of them so I'd be nervous about requesting them all at once. -.-;;;) Who were you thinking of nominating? A bit late to the party, but here's what I'm intending on nominating!

Akatsuki no Yona (also known as Yona of the Dawn)
It's a short, 24 episode anime series that can be watched on Crunchyroll. If you like complex characters, slow but realistically paced character development, problems/people being shown from multiple, differing viewpoints, LOYALTY KINK, pretty men, and adorable squirrels trying to eat inedible things, watch Yona!

My only caveat: I honestly think that this series' episode structure is its weakest point. Like, the actual events are paced very well, but the way they split them up into episodes can be odd. It also took me until episode 2 to be really sold on the series (and then it pretty much had my eternal devotion), but I know for some people that didn't kick in until episode 5/6, so if you're uncertain after an episode or two, I'd suggest at least watching until there.

Shall We Date? The Niflheim
A free otome game with microtransactions (yes, I know) on the cellphone. This... suffers from a lot of the usual problems that come along with cellphone otome games, but I'm also kind of stupidly in love with it? It has cheesy, terrible writing, tends to fall in line with a lot of troubling heteronormative tropes (the Jealousy event just about wanted to make me bash my head into the wall, and Orlando's Romantic Ending was not romantic at all, oh my god, that was awful), and can be really inconsistent in some of its world-building.

I realize that I'm mostly being negative here, but I'm actually incredibly emotionally invested in this game. It's to the extent that I'll spend hours transcribing the temporary event stories (even that stupid Jealousy event!) so that I can reread them after the event ends, and have plans to make a dictionary of Niflheim, and so forth. And there are some really great things about it! The protagonist is actually pretty great (especially when compared to the protagonists in the other Shall We Date? games), and it has a really fascinating setting! Seriously, Niflheim is SUCH a wacky place, and the world-building potential is exponential. Most, if not all, of the characters are pretty promising (Sunny in particular is pretty much the Queen Of My Heart, and if you don't think that I'm going to request Sunny/Isabella, you would be wrong. There's just SO MUCH POTENTIAL in this game, and I'm pretty much completely in love with it because of that.

Star Stealing Prince
A short, completely free indie RPG that only takes about 10-11 hours to complete! The official website is here, but you can also download it here if that link isn't working.

I don't have quite as much to say about this one, since it's been a few years since I played it, and while I'm about to go start replaying it in preparation for Yuletide, my memory's a bit hazy. But it's an incredibly charming game, with absolutely fantastic characters. I will forever be obsessed with Astra and Erio.

...And it just occurred to me that, between its sweeter moments and its darker moments, this would have been a perfect game to nominate for Trick or Treat. Damnit, self!

And that's that. I haven't decided on what else I'll be requesting, but those three are definitely on the list.

Definitely nominating:

Wentworth (Bridget Westfall, Franky Doyle, maybe also Bea Smith but I'm flexible on her if anyone has other folks they'd like me to nom!)

Nikki & Nora (Nora Delaney, Nikki Beaumont)

Possibly nominating:

Swingtown (Trina Decker, Tom Decker, Susan Miller)

The Killing (Sarah Linden, Stephen Holder)

Bloomington (2010) (Catherine, Jackie)

One Life to Live (Téa Delgado, Blair Cramer)

I am pretty far from having this list whittled down, but here's my first stab at gathering my nomination ideas...

Fandoms I'm almost definitely nominating:
Doctrine of Labyrinths
Mehitabel Parr, Enid Lemeria, Stephen Teverius, Kay Brightmore
(I can't decide if I want a story about the first three or the last one, so I'll probably nominate all four of them. ^_^)

Fandoms I've requested and gotten AMAZING stories for in the past several years, but I'm still feeling greedy and want more:
Island City (1994)
Greg 23, Connie Sealle, Andy Sealle, +/- *Michael Mindy
(I got an AMAZING 23/Mindy story last year, and I'm thinking I'd like to skew it towards the other three if I request it again.)
Power Rangers Dino Thunder
Conner McKnight, Derrick (Power Rangers), Eric McKnight
(This got me my first EVER NYR story and it was AMAZING... but it just whetted my appetite for more. -.-;;;)
Sono Te wo Dokero | Hands Off!
Urushiyama Yuuto, Oohira Tatsuki
(Got two fantastic stories for this a couple of years ago, but I just reread them while browsing my past gifts and have been kind of craving more. ^_^ I might consider nominating its prequel instead if I can find my copies to reread.)

Fandoms I've requested more than once and haven't gotten yet and will probably keep nominating until I do...
Jeremiah (TV)
Markus Alexander, Jeremiah (Jeremiah), Erin (Jeremiah), Theo Coleridge

Fandoms I've recently reobsessed over and am seriously considering:
Lunar (Video Games)
No idea who I'd nominate, but I'm leaning towards either Nash, Alex, Kyle and Mia, or Alex, Luna, Nall, and Hiro or Ghaleon, Dyne, Mel, Lemia... honestly, I have no idea. O_o;;;

Fandoms I'm thinking about but less seriously:
Power Rangers in Space
Definitely Andros and Zhane, but beyond that, I'm not sure.
My Own Worst Enemy
This was an interesting TV series that only lasted one season and starred Christian Slater as basically a sleeper agent and it was really interesting to me and left me wanting so much more than that one season and I've considered nominating it many times before but never did.
Peter Pan and the Pirates
I've been obsessed with this cartoon since I was like... 12. And I'm not sure it would even be eligible, even though I think it's significantly different that the general cannon, and I'm not sure I'm up for the battle. :P
ColSec Trilogy - Douglas Hill
A series of books I loved as a kid and always wanted to read more of. And honestly this one JUST occurred to me as I was typing this up.

That's everything for now. ^_^ And good luck to me getting that narrowed down. O_o;;;

Cross post from LJ

TV:
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip: Harriet and Jordan for sure, maybe the boys? But maybe Simon or Jack instead? Or Tom, or Cal, or Suzanne, or a future Rebecca? Gah! so many possibilities.
Supergirl: Kara and Alex Danvers
Selfie: Eliza and Henry
Life: Dani and Charlie, maybe also Rachel and Ted?

Books:
Peter Pan - J.M. Barrie: (I always nominate this, I might hold off this year, since I got the most perfect Rule 63 Pan last year, and I don't know if anything will top it.) But, maybe. If so, probably: Wendy, Peter, Tiger Lily, Hook.
The Montmaray Journals series - Michelle Cooper: Veronica, Sophie, Henry, and Toby.
The Raven Cycle series - Maggie Stiefvater: Blue, Ronan, Calla, and Gwenllian.
Code Name Verity - Elizabeth Wein: Julie and Maddie.
Paper Bag Princess - Robert Munsch: Elizabeth and the Dragon

Movies:
Byzantium (2012): ( i also ask for this a lot, so i might beg off this year) But, if not: Clara and Eleanor.
Mermaids (1990): Charlotte, Kate, and Rachel Flax
Into the Woods (2014): Baker's Wife, Cinderella, Little Red, The Witch probably.
Jurassic World (2015): Claire Dearing, Zara Young, Owen Grady.

I thought that Supergirl hadn't started yet, and wouldn't until October. All I've seen are the trailers. Did I miss something?
