Unconventionyule
Unconventionyule is a mini-challenge to help people who like unconventional formats find one another's requests, whether that’s poetry, epistolary, spreadsheets, social media, puzzles, or other unusual mediums. Please remember that works in the main collection must still be at least 1000 words, but shorter works can be submitted to the Madness collection!

Requested Fandoms: Secondhand Lions, Sonata for Harp and Bicycle, Find Me in Paris, Red Shoes and the 7 Dwarfs, A Man on the Inside, Megamind
Formats: epistolary, notes/journal entries, documents/spreadsheets, articles, folklore, interview transcripts, poetry/filk, social media, puzzles
(Optional) Prompts: I’d love to see any ideas you have! Some ideas I’ve thought of though:
Secondhand Lions: speculative articles or urban legends about Garth and Hub, letters or puzzles/challenges between Walter and the Sheik's grandson.
Sonata for Harp and Bicycle: Jason’s notes about other hauntings/curses he encounters, filk about the events of the story
Find Me in Paris: social media posts/discussions, conspiracy theories about Lena, Lena’s notes (or Ines making her reference sheets) about living in the modern world
Red Shoes and the 7 Dwarfs: Folklore about Snow or the Fearless Seven, post-canon interviews or articles about the curses and/or their relationship
A Man on the Inside: Charles’s notes on spy skills or the case, he (or Julie as him) trying to use social media to add a layer to his cover
Megamind: social media, tabloid articles, writing silly poetry to each other

Requested Fandoms: Mossa & Pleiti series - Malka Older, The Incandescent - Emily Tesh, Rolling in the Deep Series - Mira Grant, North of North (TV)
Format(s): Epistolary, academic articles, interviews, social media (Reddit, Twitter, Tumblr), mythology/fairy tales.
Prompts:
- I am interested in worldbuilding for the book canons in the form of especially academic articles.
- For the two contemporary-set book canons (The Incandescent and Rolling in the Deep), social media would also be super interesting.
- Letters between any of the characters would also work for me! This seems especially suited to Mossa and Pleiti IMO but also Nikki and Saffy from The Incandescent.
- Siaja (North of North) writes letters to Bun or her mom reflecting on various things.
- For Rolling in the Deep, utilizing mermaid myths to structure the story.

Requested Fandom: Chants of Sennaar (Video Game)
Formats: epistolary, poetry, scientific papers, conversations, translations, puzzles, other)
Prompts:
""Chants of Sennaar" is a language translation based puzzle game. I think it would be really neat to get a fic written partially or wholly in the in game languages. That may be tricky in ao3, formatting wise, and the vocabulary set is fairly limited, so it may make more sense as a madness idea. But if you’re up for the challenge, I’d also be so here for that as a the main gift.
I’d be open for Scientific writing, poetry, letters, more conversations / translated dialogue puzzles between the different people of the tower, or any other odd formats as part of worldbuilding / in game language... But really down for whatever here. I’d like you to get weird with it, if you want."
Requested Fandom: Pie in the Sky (TV) - Ian Lefebvre (Character selection)
Format: Fandom meta essay
Prompts:
"Another option I’d be interested in would be a Meta essay comparing/contrasting Ian Lefebvre and Izzy Hands (and Cliff Castello if you want to include him too.) - Like OFMD, Pie in the sky is theoretically a light-hearted comedy, but Con's character doesn't really experience it as such. How Izzy and Ian were let down by their source materials, the unexplored depth. The (mis)handling of disability as a theme, the messaging around moving on / letting go. Their queer subtext. How they’re set apart from the other characters. I think there’s a lot to dig into here, if you wanted."
Requested Fandom: Magical Diary (Visual Novels) - Hieronymous Grabiner (character selection)
Format(s): Fandom meta essay
Prompts:
A Meta essay comparing/contrasting Hieronymous and Severous Snape. Grabby is so clearly based on Snape, is a character inspired by him. But he deals with the themes, backstory, role and responsibility as a teacher, motivations, etc. in such a different way. Anything exploring those similarities/differences, their philosophies, etc, would be really interesting.

Format(s): Any! (Social media for Scarlet Hollow only, though)

Fandom: Interstellar (2014)
Format(s): epistolary, journal entries, report/formal document

Requested Fandoms: Hexwood - Diana Wynne Jones; The Incandescent - Emily Tesh
Format(s): academic papers, textbook excerpts, class assignments, job applications, bureaucratic forms, news articles, social media posts… basically any sort of documents that illuminate the world or provide an outside POV.
(Optional) Prompts:
For The Incandescent: What kind of paperwork had to be filed to approve the Phoenix as a research project? Did Walden publish papers about it? Mention it in her job application? Also, one of the things I really enjoyed in the novel was that magic is taught alongside regular academic subjects. Tell me how magic interacts with and influences another field you know well! I’d love to see an excerpt from a textbook, journal article, syllabus, assignment, etc.
For Hexwood: It would be great to see an outside POV on the world and the changes that will be occurring post-canon. I’d really like to see any sort of in-universe documents that shed light on what’s happening: interoffice memos, updates to the employee handbook, news articles (serious or tabloid-style), social media posts…

Requested fandoms: Sinners (2025), Roman Holiday (1953)
Format(s): letters, podcast/YouTube transcripts, social media posts, blog posts, Wikipedia articles, text messages
Prompt for Sinners: I spent so much time thinking about the effect that the night detailed in the movie would have had on the community in Clarksdale. I like the idea of, all these years later, there being a kind of legend about the night that all the people disappeared and how Sammie Moore managed to be the only survivor. Maybe there's a podcast/YouTube channel like Ghost Files where the hosts try to dig in/figure out what happened that night, while being both wildly incorrect and getting very close to figuring out the truth.
Prompt for Roman Holiday: If a modern AU ends up being your thing, how would Princess Ann's adventure look different with social media? Are Joe and Irving working for an online magazine and trying to get a big scoop? Seeing the story told via social media posts or something similar would be interesting!

Relevant Fandoms:
- Sieben Jahre - Tanja Kinkel
- Some Desperate Glory - Emily Tesh (Lin, Avi)
- Her Smoke Rose Up Forever - James Tiptree, Jr.
- Dune - Frank Herbert (any two of Irulan, Margot, Jessica, Chani)
Format(s): (e.g. epistolary, poetry, spreadsheets, social media) - my prompts tend towards epistolary / found document / social media type prompts, but honestly I would take anything. Want to write a sonnet from Lin's POV? Or make a twisty IF that follows all the choices Heinrich could make? yes please!
(Optional) Prompts:
Sieben Jahre - epistolary between Heinrich/Friedrich, or Marwitz/Heinrich, or Amalie/Luise, or... really any pair? A puzzle where modern-day historians have to put together found documents to understand something about the characters?
Some Desperate Glory - comments in code, security logs -- does Lin ever teach Avi any opsec?
Her Smoke Rose Up Forever - I bet you could tell a really interesting story about what it means to be human from the social media point of view?
Dune - could do some really interesting things with epistolary and/or found documents, especially with Irulan -- but the others too??

Requested Fandoms: Graceling Realm - Kristin Cashore, Jane Unlimited - Kristin Cashore, Wayfarers Series - Becky Chambers, 16 Ways to Kill a Vampire at McDonalds (Interactive Fiction), Nettle & Bone - T. Kingfisher
Format(s): anything!! epistolary, social media, in-universe documents, spreadsheets, poetry, interactive fiction, transcripts of something, a heated debate taking place via a medium not designed for this, etc
(Optional) Prompts:
- Graceling - They all canonically write letters to each other, so letters could be so fun! Or lists - many of these characters write lists. Or something involving ciphering. Or, for worldbuilding purposes, excerpts of books? Ship's records? Parliamentary records from the Winterkeep government?
- Jane Unlimited - The format of this book is inherently a bit odd and there are a lot of potentials for playing with that - weird branching structures, interactive fiction, etc. Jane also writes lists, so that could be cool here as well. Or umbrella designs? Notes in the margin of an umbrella-making book?
- Wayfarers - One of my requests here was worldbuilding, and odd formats are always such a fun way to explore worldbuilding (newsfeed articles, reference entries, etc). I also requested Pepper and Sidra - Sidra in particular I think could be interesting to look at using code snippets, internal logs, etc, and both of them could show up in message board chat logs like the ones that are in the book itself.
- 16 Ways - Well, this is a piece of IF, so obviously IF here! Or other things - are there news articles about the McDonalds? A police report?
- Nettle & Bone - letters, instructions for quests, potion recipes, maps?

Requested Fandoms: No Man's Sky, Legacy of Kain, Saint of Steel
Format(s): Epistolary, reports, documents, memoirs, interview transcripts, articles, papers, second or first person fic.
(Optional) Prompts: Please feel free to adapt any of my letter prompts into a format above, it would fascinating to see reports or journals or papers as fills.
No Man's Sky
- If you've got a freighter in game you may be familiar with the reports your frigate commanders give when they come back off their expeditions. I think I've seen all of the canon ones now, but I love them and I'd be very up for seeing new ones that tell an interesting story by reading between the lines...
- A recording transcript from a crashed frigate.
- An article in a local space station digital magazine that details a strange and anomalous Traveller passing through.
- Notes of a Traveller trying to decipher Korvax, Gek or Vy'Keen culture or ancient texts.
Legacy of Kain
- Sarafan intel reports on the elusive winged creature in the snows (either Janos or wraith Raziel).
- Interview transcripts with people who have run into wraith Raziel and lived to tell the tale.
- Any character, though I suspect probably Vorador or Janos, writing a letter to another, detailing their regrets or hopes for the future.
Saint of Steel
- Zale's "aftermath" report when they describe having to go solve an issue alongside the paladins.
- Any of the paladins having to write a report to the Bishop detailing the "success" or otherwise (including property damage inflicted) of one of their recent missions for the temple.

Requested Fandom: Magus of the Library
Format(s): In-universe fiction (i.e. books read in the setting), in-universe library training materials or literary criticism
(Optional) Prompts: The manga includes references to numerous books written in-universe, such as The Adventures of Shagrazzat or Mulligad, the Seven Seminal Scripts that founded entire cultures, and numerous works of pop fiction -- a chapter from one of them would be good; a chapter with associated literary commentary, librarian annotations, arguments about translation nuances, or debates about whether it should be censored is even better. The manga is about magical librarians training in a fantasy world, so their training materials and syllabi would also be interesting.
Requested Fandom: The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't a Guy at All
Format(s): Music, mixtapes/playlists, music videos
(Optional) Prompts: The music that Mitsuki and Aya love is very much at the core of the manga. Providing songs or a playlist that tell a story, or provide a soundtrack to the story you write, would really fit well. An original song or homemade music video would be amazing, though probably a lot to ask.
Requested Fandom: Blue Prince
Format(s): University syllabi or textbooks, architectural magazines, interactive fiction or other games
(Optional) Prompts: 'Architectural drafting' is a science in the setting that allows the creation of buildings with rooms that shift around or vanish temporarily from existence, and which can be transformed into portable blueprints and installed in other buildings. There are colleges that teach the science, and their instructional texts would be fascinating to see, including technobabble explanations, the history of the science, or catalogs of other buildings using the technique other than the one seen in the game. More issues of the canonical magazine discussing the science would be similarly interesting. On a different angle, interactive fiction (or another sort of game) might be an interesting way to explore a building made that way, possibly from the point of view of a character who was involved in a fight against a fascist regime and had her own brushes with the science.

Format(s): (e.g. epistolary, poetry, spreadsheets, social media): All of the above plus academic journal articles (or just articles!) and interviews. And letters.
(Optional) Prompts: Citizen Kane is itself an epistolary movie of a sort so it lends itself to this, but I'd love to see the X-Men from outside or via communicating, or the academic or media side of the BPRD for Hellboy! Or a cursed journal style thing for them to investigate.

Requested Fandoms: Call Me By Your Name (2017), Soulmate Goose AU Suggestion - shitty-check-please-aus (Tumblr Post), Graceling Realm Series - Kristin Cashore, John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme, Seraphina - Rachel Hartman, Boyfriend Material – Alexis Hall, Murderbot (TV)
Formats: Honestly, everything I see other folks listing here sounds amazing! I'm open to any of it! Epistolary fic, poetry (I especially love finicky forms like sonnets, sestinas, or the delightful double dactyl), journal entries, texting/chatting/messaging (as makes sense for the fandom in question), academic articles/scientific papers, stories told in script (play, screenplay, radio play) format… If you can tell a story in the form of a spreadsheet, please do! Or a story that’s a puzzle, omg. Choose your own adventure, interactive fiction, music/filk/art/etc., or any kind of experimental storytelling like non-linear or unusual POVs... I say yes please to any of those – or surprise me :-)
Prompts: Just some ideas if you want them:
Call Me By Your Name (2017): This could lend itself well to epistolary fic – after all, Elio and Oliver part at the end of the summer, and we don't know much about what happens after that. The source material itself also has a strong bent toward poetry. (Or perhaps even poetry translation? Maybe the two of them collaborate on translating something by Rilke or Celan...? collaborating by letter...?)
Soulmate Goose AU Suggestion: I mean...this fandom is already such a wonderfully ridiculous concept. Unconventional formats seem like a great way to have even more fun with it!
Graceling Realm Series: I agree with magsintherain, above, that this fandom lends itself well to epistolary fic, since the characters are always traveling between different kingdoms and needing to keep in touch with each other. Or any other kind of documentation you think would be fun to explore with them.
John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme: So many possibilities here! A sketch/story told in script format? A story-told-in-reverse like series 9 of JFSP? Time travel shenanigans? A story in puzzle form? (I was gifted one of these once in a previous Yuletide and it was amazing!)
Seraphina - Rachel Hartman: Music is an important part of this world, especially for Seraphina herself, so maybe something with music? Also languages, since Seraphina understands Mootya and Tess is fluent in Quootla. Maybe something fun could be done using languages? A glossary with commentary? Ooh, or maybe there's an interesting way to portray maternal memories - even though Seraphina is only half dragon, is she able to create maternal memories for her daughter?
Boyfriend Material: Among other possibilities, this fandom really lends itself to texting conversations. What with Oliver's established habit of sending Luc Dick pics (not that kind of dick pics) the jokes practically write themselves. :-) Or how about a text exchange between Luc and Alex, where Luc is trying to find out some incredibly simple piece of information from Alex, while Alex is being...Alex.
Murderbot: So many possibilities! Maybe fic that takes place in the feed/comms/Murderbot's communications with other constructs or bots. Maybe Murderbot sends back communications to Mensah and the team? I've also read delightful fics where Murderbot discovers fandom and gets extremely overly invested in tackling the problem that Someone Is Wrong On The Internet, when it comes to Sanctuary Moon discussion forums. Or even that the PresAux team starts writing bad fanfic or metas about Sanctuary Moon, as a way to tempt Murderbot into communicating with them. Or, if anyone could write a story in the form of a spreadsheet, it's probably Murderbot!

Fandoms(s): Midnight Burger, Pentecost & Parker, Good Place, Frasier, We Are Lady Parts, Ludwig, Shakespeare & Hathaway, How to Die Alone
Prompts: I love epistolary formats (ALL epistolary formats) so much that you cannot go wrong with an epistolary fic—letters, journals, texts, social media, I love it all. There are some specific epistolary prompts for Pentecost & Parker (which is explicitly epistolary as a media — 1940s detective duo, both women, great disability + queer rep), but would welcome it for every other fandom too.
Since the post calls out puzzles, I have to say a puzzle for Ludwig (titular character writes puzzles under the Ludwig pseudonym) would be a VERY fun gift

Requested Fandoms: Ancillary Trilogy, The Raven Tower, The Library of Babel , Rivers of London
Format(s): poetry/filk, in-universe documents, articles, codes/puzzles, interesting use of paratext
(Optional) Prompts: I loooove unusual formats, so would be really excited to get anything in this vein, but here are some specific ideas!
The Library of Babel: I think this has the most possibilities for unconventional stories out of my requested fandoms. The original short story is framed as an in-universe document, and I'd love to see some other perspectives: the journal of a librarian, the manifesto of a specific philosophical sect, poetry about the Library (I feel like fixed forms with repeats like villanelles, senstinas, and ballades are especially suitable but would love anything), letters between travelers who occasionally pass through the same hex . . .
In addition, there is an online version of the Library of Babel where you can search for text strings and find their location in the Library, so it's possible to direct someone to a page with a specific message. Would love to have this incorporated into all or part of a fic. Is it a message from a librarian? From the Library itself? Something else? I've used this site to send messages before and find the process of navigating to wall, book and page very eerie and immersive. Everything you could possibly say is already in the Library, somewhere. What books will you point me to?
Ancillary Trilogy: Lots of opportunities for in-universe documents and messages between characters. The books already do some interesting things with point of view, and this could be explored further: what is the point of view of a ship without ancillaries like? How about a station? Part of the translation conceit of the books is that poetry (primarily song lyrics, which the main character collects) are rendered as if they were somewhat stilted literal translations. It can be fun to take a famous song or poem and create the 'literal-translation-from-Radchaai' version, and I'd love to see this either as an integrated part of a fic or as a lyric title.
The Raven Tower: Folklore, in-universe texts about gods (especially if this doesn't match up exactly with what we know about gods from the narration), stories within stories, folk/filk ballads.
