Chromatic Yuletide 2024
Chromatic Yuletide is a collection post for Yuletide requests that include characters of colour. Posting here doesn't obligate you to do anything, but it helps writers find your requests and treat you.
Posting requirements:
Your request centers around at least one character of colour.
(I acknowledge there are some shortcomings with the "person of colour" descriptor. I'm also not going to police who is or isn't a character of colour; please just use your best judgment.)
What you must include:
Your AO3 name
Whatever fandoms & characters of colour you're requesting
What you should probably include:
Links to your letter or copy/pasted requests
A brief description of your canon or a link to a canon promo, if you think it's unfamiliar to most people & you want to boost interest in it
If you write for one of these requests, you can tag your fic with Chromatic Yuletide so people can easily find it.

Breakaway Series - E. L. Massey
Letter
I'm requesting Eli, he's Black and Latino, grew up gay in Alabama. This is when he's in college (in Texas).
Title: Breakaway Series - E. L. Massey
Approx length: 400 pages per book (can read just the first two for Eli)
What is it, in summary?: A M/M romance between a disabled, POC figure skater (Eli) and a hockey player. It started life as a Kent Parson Check Please fanfic but quickly grew it's cast of original characters (and the Kent character changed enough) that it got rebranded as original fiction.
What do you love about it?: A flawed character trying to be better and a disabled character getting to be grumpy about things that are difficult for him.
What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: fic focused on Eli: his cooking video channel, hanging out with the hockey team, playing video games with his boyfriend.
Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Like Real People Do (the first book) introduces the characters and gives a good sense for who they are.
Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
Seizures and hockey injuries.
Winter's Orbit - Everina Maxwell
Letter
I'm requesting Jainan nav Adessari in Winter's Orbit. Both the main characters have brown skin, it takes place in another galaxy that doesn't translate to earth well. There's cool worldbuilding and some space opera.
It's one book long. Content warning: past abuse.

I’m requesting Tashi Donaldson from the 2024 film Challengers about three tennis players in a love triangle where all of the corners touch. Tashi is a black woman and a former star tennis player whose career was cut short due to an injury in college. She’s now a coach married to her husband Art, who has become a famous tennis player under her tutelage, but she still holds feelings for her ex-boyfriend Patrick, who had a homoerotic friendship with Art when they were young.
As per my letter: This is my current fandom and I’m craving literally any throuple content, but especially plotty quarantine-fics and kink fics. I also love "for want of a nail" fics and there's shockingly few fics where they do a different competitive activity which could be really fun. Yes to comical misunderstandings, romcom arguments, internalized homophobia/biphobia, angst about the ravages of time coming for us all, extremely millennial pop culture references. Yes to dorks in love saying yes to life!
Teen angst or the apocalypse

Likes:Strong female, queer and/or crip characters, angst with a happy ending, mysteries, imaginative cross-overs, porn if there's plot
DNWs: crueltide, AUs that have no connection to the original canon, porn without plot katekane
I'm requesting fics based on two separate tv-shows (only one season each) that are both centered around POCs:
The Midnight Club Emotionally deep show by Mike Flanagan about a hospice for young people, where they "extend" their lives by telling each other stories at midnight. Three out of my four requested characters are POC, two of whom are also queer. I really just want to know more about them and have them bond over their othernesses. So pretty open request!
The Bite Hilarious miniseries about an imagined new wave of covid that turns people into zombies while politicians do little to hinder the onset of an actual apocalypse. Our two main characters is an unlikely duo who team up only because they live above one another in the same building: Rachel is a super smart black doctor who understands science, Lily is a white professional dominatrix who understands people. Tell me how they fare after the miniseries' open ending!

Tintin - Tchang Tchong-Jen
Fandom and character: Tchang Tchong-Jen from Tintin.
Tchang is a very special character in this series, as he's based on a real life person, Zhang Chongren (or Chang Chong-jen - the transcription varies somewhat), a young Chinese art student who helped Hergé making the depiction of China more accurate in The Blue Lotus (every kanji in the story was written by him, which means every single banner, sign or advertisement in the background actually carries a real message).
Hergé and the real Zhang became very good friends, but lost contact when Zhang went back to China (however, they did manage to meet up again before Hergé died).
This very close relationship is mirrored in the comic books, both towards the ending of The Blue Lotus, where both Tintin and Tchang are more or less crying the entire last page as they have to say goodbye, and in Tintin in Tibet, where Tintin drags Captain Haddock with him to the Himalayas to rescue Tchang - simply because he keeps having dreams that indicate Tchang still being alive (while the official verdict is that nobody survived the plane crashing high in the mountains).
In the following story, The Castafiore Emerald, we see Tintin receive a letter from Tchang, who's now living in London with his uncle.
We first meet Tchang as Tintin saves him from drowning in the Yangtze river. He's an orphan, but it's a bit unclear whether he became one due to the flooding, or if he was one before the flood. He's later adopted by Mr. Wang and family - Mr. Wang is the leader of the secret society "Sons of the Dragon", a society sworn to fighting the opium trade, and Tintin is helping them doing that.
The Blue Lotus takes place in Shanghai in the late 1930's. In Tintin in Tibet the Wangs and Tchang have moved to Hong Kong. It's not said explicitly why that happened, but it's not wrong to assume it has to do with that family being considered enemies of the Maoist regime in China.
Tchang is shown to be brave, kind and quick-witted and even though he only appears in 1½ album (he only shows up around halfway through The Blue Lotus), it's clear he and Tintin have a special bond. Even though he's sort of the "damsel in distress" in Tintin in Tibet, he's shown to be tough and resourceful, between having the wits to seek cover in a snowstorm with an injured leg, and thinking of leaving traces of his survival in the hope a rescue-team will come looking for him.
In the end he's also the only one in the story to not call the Abominable Snowman "abominable", since he's been the primary witness of the care and, dare I say it, humanity, the Yeti possesses in this story.
What I'm requesting: A story exploring the bond between Tchang and Tintin, be it romantic or platonic. The reading of their relationship can easily go both ways.
A story set in 1930's China, because I love the setting of The Blue Lotus.
Some prompts from my sign-up:
Tintin and Tchang spending spending time together in China after the events of The Blue Lotus but before Tintin's return to Europe.
Tchang visiting Moulinsart (Marlinspike Hall in English).
Tintin visiting Tchang in London.

Fandoms & Characters:
For All Mankind: I would love to get Aleida/Kelly or Aleida & Kelly fic! Aleida is Mexican-American and Kelly is Vietnamese-American, and neither were born in the US but came here as children.
Baby-Sitter's Club: Claudia Kishi, who is Japanese-American is my favorite character and I would love to get fic of her.
Countless - Cai Guoqing & Chen Chusheng & Zhang Yuan & Yu Haoming (Call Me By Fire 2023 Performance): This is a performance from a Chinese variety show, and all performers/characters are Chinese. I included links to watch it in my promo post.
The Magnus Protocol: I don't believe any of the characters' races have been established, other than the fact that Sam has an Arabic name (Samama Khalid) and he has an accent that could be Middle Eastern (which is not the actor's own accent). Which means you can go nuts, I am open to any of the characters being any race.
Sherlock & Co.: Same as TMAGP, since it's a podcast we don't really know anyone's races. Mariana is from Spain, but I don't believe we know what race/ethnic group she belongs to. So again, I am open to any of the characters being any race.

Letter: ambyr's letter
Fandom 1: Dispatches from Elsewhere (TV) (Fredwynn, Lee)
Dispatches from Elsewhere is a one-season TV show about a group of strangers brought together by chance to play an alternate reality game, which may or may not be more than a game. Fredwynn is one of the four team members, a conspiracy theorist who is absolutely determined that there's more to the game than meets the eye. Lee is one of the people organizing the game (and struggling to deal with our protagonists' occasionally over-enthusiastic efforts to peek behind the curtain). I struggle to give specific prompts without wildly spoiling canon, but there's definitely space for some interesting fic about both of them, individually or together.
Fandom 2: Star Wars Rebels: Servants of the Empire - Jason Fry (Zare Leonis, Dhara Leonis)
Servants of the Empire is a four-volume middle-grade series (They're short! They're all on Kindle Unlimited!) about a teenaged boy who goes undercover as an Imperial cadet to find and rescue his older sister, who went missing from the same academy. If you've seen Rebels, you might recognize Zare as a side character in two episodes; if you haven't seen Rebels, the novels stand on their own perfectly well and will tell you everything you need to know to understand Zare's perspective and personal quest. The way I keep wanting to describe them is "much better than they have any right to be"; they're children's books, but they manage a surprisingly nuanced look at why some people comply with fascist regimes while others are radicalized against them. And a lot of the middle books are focused on Zare's struggle to cope with the psychological strain of long-term undercover work.
Fandom 3: Star Wars: Doctor Aphra (Comics) (Chelli Lona Aphra, Sana Starros)
Doctor Aphra spans two runs (2016-2019, and 2020-2024) and is mostly collected into two omnibuses. Doctor Aphra is a rogue archaeologist (think: tomb robber) who has an extremely limited sense of morality (or monogamy) and is constantly getting into scrapes with the worse people in the galaxy, then double-crossing her way out of them as best she can. Sana Starros is a smuggler and one of Aphra's on-again, off-again girlfriends. Together they . . . fight crime? No, together they mostly cause crime. But in a way that's entertaining to anyone outside the blast radius.

Fandom: Funny Girl - Styne/Merril/Lennart/Fierstein
Character: Eddie Ryan
What is it?: The 2022 revival of the classic Barbara Streisand musical. Lots of bootlegs are up on Youtube.
What am I requesting: Eddie was originally played by a white actor, but the revival casts him as a Black man, so I would love fic that writes him as a specifically Black character.
Fandom: First Kill (TV 2022)
Characters: Apollo Burns, Calliope Burns, Talia Burns, Theo Burns
What is it?: An 8 episode supernatural teen drama on Netflix about star-crossed lesbians from a vampire family and a vampire hunting family
What I am requesting: The Burns are a Black family of vampire hunters and I want to read more about their beautiful and complicated relationships with each other and the vampire hunting organization.
Fandom: Thoroughly Modern Millie - Tesori/Scanlan/Morris
Character: Muzzy Van Hossmere
What is it?: A 2002 adaptation of a Julie Andrews film from the 60s.
What am I requesting: The way this musical handles race is pretty horrible overall, but they did choose to cast Muzzy as a Black woman, which is a change from the movie. They then proceeded to never address this or make it part of her character. Much like the Funny Girl example above, I would love for fic that writes Muzzy as a specifically Black character.
Fandom: Roaring Twenties Magic - Allie Therin
Characters: Jade Robbins, Jianwei Zhang
What is it?: M/M fantasy historical romance trilogy that is a spinoff of the Magic in Manhattan series.
What I am requesting: Jade and Zhang are a secondary couple across both series who deserve more love! She's telekinetic former spy with a taste for fancy suits who runs a speakeasy in Harlem. He can astral project and comes from a family of Chinese magical scholars. They solve magical mysteries together.

Fandoms:
Chuubo's Magical Wish-Granting Engine:
What is it?: A tabletop RPG set in a lightly surreal but heartwarming place called Town, where the rest of the world has been engulfed by the mysterious Outside, and the Bleak Academy looms far beyond the world, desiring to complete the end of the everything.
Relevant characters: Natalia Koutolika is Russian, and Jasper Irinka is of ambiguous race (being the daughter of the sun, not a human) but is usually portrayed as brown in some way. Furthermore, there are canonical alternate versions of each available in the rulebook, and Natalia notably has variants where she is Hispanic or sub-Saharan African. I would be quite happy to get works about those alternate versions!
Magus of the Library:
What is it?: A fantasy manga centering on the role of magically-trained librarians in a world recovering from disasters both natural and man-made.
Relevant elements: While the cultures involved aren't one-to-one with any real-world cultures, they all draw strongly on elements from the Middle East, South Asia, and South America (and there is basically no European influence). Most characters have characteristics of people from those areas.
Lavender Jack:
What is it?: A high-adventure/superhero/mystery webcomic set in a small European nation in the early twentieth century. A heroic masked thief matches wits with the world's greatest detective as he tries to bring down a conspiracy of the rich and powerful.
Relevant characters: Madame Theresa Ferrier, the aforementioned great detective, is a tall, bald, elderly, butch Black French lady. Her wife, Marguerite Des Melbone, is never given a nationality of origin, but is clearly of color. (Indeed, of the major characters, very few are White! But Theresa and Marguerite are who I'm requesting.)
Black Adam
Charakter of Color: Carter Hall
Black Adam (Movie 2022)
Prompts
I have to say I thought the film was really good. Hawkman was my absolute highlight. I thought the friendship between him and Dr. Fate was wonderful and would really enjoy a story like that.
I also thought it was funny how Carter was constantly fighting with Black Adam while Fate watched and was quietly amused.
Or how Carter felt when Kent raised the shield to fight the enemy alone so that Carter's visions wouldn't come true and thus protect Carter from death.
How did Carter feel at the end when Kent died? Questions upon questions. So I have written down a few combinations.
DNWs: A/B/O, any AU other than canon divergence, excessive gore, soulmates, incest, character bashing, suicide, self harm, anything romantic, power imbalance.
General likes: friendship, family, drama, character death, action, canon-divergence.

Fandoms: Their Majesties' Pleasure, Wylde Flowers, Seven Kingdoms: The Princess Problem
Their Majesties' Pleasure
This is a romance-fantasy text game with multiple endings and multiple love interests. You can play the first three chapters for free, and I wrote a promo when I nommed the fandom.
Edenia and Javier are both characters of color (both in the textual descriptions and in the full version of the cover art. The game doesn't include appearance customization for the player character.
Wylde Flowers
It's a casual farming sim with magic, fairies, and a dating subplot. There are multiple love interest characters, but the whole cast is quite charming. The characters are very diverse, but the game is a bit heavy-handed, though well-intentioned, in my estimation.
Of the characters that I requested, Shelby Demeter is a Hungarian Romani. Peri might also qualify (based on context clues, like her favorite foods, she's probably Iranian) but I know there's some ambivalence about non-human characters.
I didn't promo this fandom, but there's a pretty extensive wiki. The game also has an official site to help you find where you can buy it.
Seven Kingdoms: The Princess Problem
This diplomacy sim/dating sim/RPG/stat-raiser indie game just went into early access this past summer. It's a very extensive game with a big cast, many love interests, and many, many endings. Playing it just once probably only takes a few hours to a few days, but because of the branching, it's difficult not to play it multiple times.
You can play the early access version on itch.io. I didn't promo it this year, but I have an old promo post that I did for another exchange, before early access. The fandom is small, but reawakening with the updated game.
Of the characters I requested, Sayra and Mrs. White are both black. This game has some appearance customization (no player character avatar, just text), which includes things like skin color and hair texture.

• Interview with the Vampire (TV 2022) RPF - Jacob Anderson, a British actor from Bristol, England with Afro-Caribbean roots (his parent).
Description: Interview with the Vampire is an adaptation of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, currently airing on AMC. The cast and crew is notably very committed to the project, and incredibly close to each other. Remember how close the LotR cast was? Yeah. Like that. Jacob is especially close to his co-star, Sam Reid, as they pretty much live in each other's pockets. Of note is that this particular adaptation is fully committed to diversifying the original story (to excellent effect), and Jacob is playing a Black Creole version of an originally white character.
• Killjoys (TV) - Dutch|Yalena Yardeen, played by British actor Hannah John-Kamen, who is from Yorkshire, England and has Nigerian roots (her parent).
Description: Killjoys is a 2015 Canadian scifi drama television series that aired for 5 seasons. It's about three bounty hunters -- Dutch, Johnny Jaqobis, and D'avin Jaqobis -- who work for a neutral law enforcement organization (and I use "law" loosely, here) which executes warrants within a four-planet system. Things escalate, as they usually do, dark secrets are revealed, and Dutch and her team end up at the forefront of a worlds-ending conflict. While much of the show is dystopian in tone, real-world oppressions, such as racism, are not a part of the narrative (although class oppression is a huge thing). Alongside Dutch, I've requested Johnny Jaqobis; and Khlyen, Dutch's erstwhile mentor and sometime adversary.
• Constantine (TV) - Manny, played by black American actor, Harold Perrineau.
Description: Constantine is the short-lived 2014 television adaptation of DC's Hellblazer comics, airing for one season. It's about the blue collar British warlock/exorcist/occult detective John Constantine as he stands against supernatural forces. Manny is a mysterious angel who spends most of the season "helping" or guiding John in his work, although John isn't particularly pleased with Manny's presence. While secrets are revealed at the end of the season, due to the cancellation of the show, we never really find out much about Manny, including who he is (and if there is an analogous character in the comics) and what his motivations truly are (although the show does end with one hell of a cliffhanger).

The canons I requested with canonical characters of color:
Mesopotamian RPF
Akkadian Empire RPF
Okay, these are... iffy. Ethnically Sumerian and Akkadian people in the Bronze Age Mesopotamian City-State of Ur weren't really living in a world where "people of color" was a meaningful category. However, both Ea-Nasir and Enheduanna lived in what is now the Middle East and were undeniably Middle Eastern. Just. Ancient Bronze Age Middle Eastern.
The Jewels of Aptor - Samuel Delany (short novel)
A fantasy/sci-fi novel from the 1960s; Samuel Delany's first published novel. A deeply weird adventure to rescue the high priestess's little sister from a cult and reclaim the powerful Jewels of Aptor, in a world that is slowly revealed to be post-nuclear-apocalypse and the bizarre people and creatures that still live on an island with nuclear-powered high-tech. Can be downloaded and read for free, legally!, here: https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/samuel-r-delany/the-jewels-of-aptor
One of my requested characters, Iimmi, is canonically Black. And even though it's a sci-fi novel from the 1960s, Samuel Delany is also Black (and gay), so the book isn't even particularly weird about it! (and it's kinda gay)
The Pasithea Powder (podcast)
An EXCELLENT sci-fi podcast. About two women after a devastating space war: one now a war hero, the other now a war criminal. They used to be best friends. They aren't anymore. But they're still the only people who really understand each other after... everything. And there are still secrets left, and the war isn't as over as they both hoped.
Jane Gonzalez is presumably, like her voice actor, Latina. It's a very Latine-focused spacefuture culture; there's a lot to be done there!

Fandoms & Characters of Color: Tashi Donaldson in Challengers, Javi Rivera in Twisters
Link to letter: Here
Prompts/Comments: They were two of my very favorite characters to come out of the past year and I am really aching for gen/character studies of both of them. And I feel like the respective fandoms take generally no interest in them in the grand scheme of things lol but maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.
Twisters: I love Javi unconditionally. I want more of his emotional interiority on EVERYTHING, from pre-canon (discovering a love of storms, going to Muskogee State, growing up Latino in Oklahoma—he says he's from "Miami" but I wonder if this was a mispronunciation of Miami, Oklahoma, which if you're local is pronounced more like "Miamuh") to mid-canon (friend group shenanigans with Jeb, Kate, Praveen, Addy; coping with their deaths, maybe having an ill-considered grief hook-up with Kate, joining the military to run away but just obsessively chasing tech that might have saved his friends if he had just invented it sooner, connectihg with Scott, gearing himself up to reach out to Kate—canonically he visits her mom!—pining longing guilt yum) to post-canon (in love with Kate again, finding community in the wrangler crew, slowly opening himself up to love and adventure again).
Challengers: Would LOVE Tashi POV if you're up for that. A Tashi character study, a proper elegy to the art she has lost; the emotions of that scene where she sits down beside the tree and stares at her knee, but a whole fic length. I am reminded of that New York Times profile of Keith Jarrett after it was announced he would never play the piano again due to a stroke. “Right now, I can’t even talk about this,” he said when the issue came up, and laughed his deflective laugh. “That’s what I feel about it.” And while the magnificent achievement of “Budapest Concert” is a source of pride, it’s not hard to see how it could also register as a cosmic taunt. “I can only play with my right hand, and it’s not convincing me anymore,” Mr. Jarrett said. “I even have dreams where I am as messed up as I really am — so I’ve found myself trying to play in my dreams, but it’s just like real life.”
