Yuletide Fandom Promo 2024!

Welcome to the Fandom Promo post, everyone!

Here's where you get those eyes on your fandoms for sign-ups!

Share what makes your Yuletide fandoms the shiniest and why you love them. A big part of Yuletide is how small our fandoms can be, and this is a good way to make sure other people know what gems there are out there!

Cheju has started a spreadsheet for promo! Here's the link!

Here are some areas you can cover:

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
This is at your discretion and is not expected to be comprehensive

(Bonus options: What are you thinking of requesting for this? If you're thinking of nominating worldbuilding, what sort of worldbuilding topics might people explore?)

Useful tip (Not required, but helps people if they want to engage with your fandom!):

- It's best to make each fandom its own entry with its own title in the subject line! That makes it easier for people to find/see what you're promoting! Don't worry about 'spam', that is the entire point of this entry and you're using it exactly as intended.

Title(s):
Joe’s Palace
A Real Summer
Capturing Mary

Media:
Three television films from 2007 featuring a shared continuity and characters

Approx length:
Joe’s Palace is 1h 48m
A Real Summer is 48m
Capturing Mary is 1h 45m

Where to find it:
Inside of the UK the only (legal) way to access all three films is the buy the DVDs (A Real Summer comes attached as a special feature to Capturing Mary). I believe both the feature length films are available on HBO Max and Joe’s Palace on Prime Video (my information may be wrong).

A Real Summer is available on YouTube here.

What is it, in summary?:

It’s a series of television films directed by Stephen Poliakoff from 2007 which explore modern Britain and its deep connections with a not always so pleasant past with a rotating ensemble of characters including Joe, a working class London teenager who finds himself employed by reclusive but troubled billionaire Elliot Graham as a doorman. Through this work Joe also meets Mary Gilbert, an older woman who tells Joe about her experiences in that very house as an ambitious young woman desperate for journalistic success.

What do you love about it?:
Honestly I love these films so much ever since I first stumbled across them, they remind me of old drawing room plays with how the location becomes almost a character in itself and the way the pasts come to haunt these people and even how Joe almost serves as a psychopomp as well as audience surrogate in guiding people away from the troubles of their pasts and helping them move on.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
I’m going to request stuff more related to Capturing Mary and A Real Summer than to Joe’s Palace, specifically stuff around the characters of Mary and Joe, and probably some femslash of whatever is going on in A Real Summer, there’s some homoeroticism in there, I can feel it in my heart.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?:
Like I mentioned above what I’m going to request is going to be based around A Real Summer which is easily available on YouTube, though I would recommend you watch all three films to get a better understanding of the characters and setting you could easily just watch A Real Summer and write fic based on that and Mary and Geraldine’s relationship.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
Period typical classism and sexism inside the 1950s flashbacks in Capturing Mary and A Real Summer, both portrayed very much as negative things. Discussions of Nazi sympathisers and the Holocaust in Joe’s Palace.
