Chromatic Yuletide 2023
Chromatic Yuletide is a collection post for Yuletide requests that include characters of color. Posting here doesn't obligate you to do anything, but it helps writers find your requests and treat you.
Posting requirements:
Your request centers around at least one character of color.
(I acknowledge there are some shortcomings with the "person of color" descriptor. I'm also not going to police who is or isn't a character of color; please just use your best judgment.)
What you must include:
Your AO3 name
Whatever fandoms & characters of color you're requesting
What you should probably include:
Links to your letter or copy/pasted requests
A brief description of your canon or a link to a canon promo, if you think it's unfamiliar to most people & you want to boost interest in it
If you write for one of these requests, you can tag your fic with Chromatic Yuletide so people can easily find it.

Enola Holmes (Movies)
Edith Grayston (Enola Holmes Movies), Sherlock Holmes (Enola Holmes Movies)
Edith Grayston is a black suffragette who owns her own business. She has great chemistry with Sherlock Holmes, and I love the way that he listens to her when she points out things he hadn't thought of.
Dirty Computer - Janelle Monáe (Music Video)
Ché (Dirty Computer), Jane (Dirty Computer), Zen (Dirty Computer)
Dirty Computer is an album-long music video about queerness, conformity, and resistance to fascism, starring a Janelle Monae and Tessa Thompson. It is lush and gorgeous, both musically and visually.
将军在上 | Oh My General (TV)
Ye Zhao (Oh My General), Zhao Yujin
Oh My General is a humorous historical Chinese web series about a woman who was disguised as a man and rose to the rank of general, being highly successful. After she is revealed, she is ordered to marry a pampered, spoiled prince. The series is about the shenanigans of their relationship and also the larger political and military situation.

Fandoms:
Rivers of London - Peter Grant, Thomas Nightingale, worldbuilding
This book series' protagonist is a young Black man born to West African immigrants who joins the London police and is recruited as an apprentice by the sole member of the British magical police force.
I adore the magical system, and this very posh, imperial British system being subverted by Nightingale who apparently has an entirely different criteria for who might make a good apprentice. I lived in London in the early 90’s, and this series re-introduced me to it, in all of its glory and history and ridiculousness, like an old friend. The bits about how policing has changed, so now they actually prefer to bring in the person who committed the crime over someone random, is hilarious. But the thing that truly made me fall in love with these books is how the young London constable finds out that there are magical people and beings all around him, and rather than viewing them as threats to be intimidated and put down as necessary, he thinks of them as the community members it’s his duty to protect.
Warrior (TV 2019) - Ah Toy, Wang Chao
Like Peaky Blinders, spaghetti Westerns, and/or kung-fu films? You'll love this! Bruce Lee was the original creator of this sexy, pulpy, action-filled genre series that highlights the history of Chinese immigrants in 1870's San Francisco. Enjoy the canonically queer characters, complex characterization, and some of the best martial arts action I've ever seen. The show doesn't shy away from the ugliness of period-typical racism, sexism and sexual exploitation in a city poised on the edge of a race war, a class war, or both. There is political intrigue among the ruling class of San Francisco, the Tongs and business interests of Chinatown, the Irish police, and the Irish 'Working Men' fighting furiously for the jobs Chinese immigrants will work for less. Ah Toy and Wang Chao are my two favorite characters. Both of them are incredibly clever and brave; they arrived in San Francisco with nothing and somehow carved out space, wealth, power, and independence in a world where that is incredibly difficult.

Fandoms requested:
I have requested the short lived, but amazing YA tv series "The Midnight Club" about a group of teenagers at a hospice, who meet up every night to come up with and share stories. In spite of the setting, the show is anything but bleak. A very rich universe - inside and outside of the stories being told at night - dealing with loss, friendship, hope, and human connection. I am mostly interested in two queer, black teenagers, Spence and Cheri, their bond and experiences. Please flesh them out for me!
I also requested the hilarious miniseries "The Bite", a satiric and slightly gory take on how covid was handled in the US. I requested the two main characters, both strong women. One of them is Rachel, a black family physician who has to work from home during lockdown - and who might be the only one who can save humanity from the new zombie-fying covid mutation... Tell be about her journey!

I've requested Wrath Goddess Sing by Maya Deane, with the characters of Kiya, Akhenaten, and Nefertiti. All are Egyptian/North African.
I've also requested Moulin Rouge - the character of Satine has been played both by nonwhite actors (Karen Olivo originated the role) and white ones. I'm not really sure where that falls in terms of the character's canon race, but I thought I'd mention it.

All the Crooked Saints (Beatriz Soria), The Bean Trees (Estevan)
All the Crooked Saints: Beatriz is a Mexican teenager living in 1960s Colorado. It's a novel about miracles, encouraging character growth in yourself and others, and embracing your emotions. No letter, but my prompts:
things I love about this canon: Beatriz -- her relationships with her cousins and her father, her whistled language, her inventions, her struggle with being labeled the girl without emotions. Pete -- his love of the desert, his hard work, his gentleness. The moment with Marisita in the kitchen when he thinks it's rude to sit but it makes her feel like he's impatient, and they talk about it. the setting, the owls, the shrine, the miracles. Beatriz on the satellite dish or under her truck. red lipstick and Joaquin's big hair and Eduardo's "blocky fleece-collared leather coats." Beatriz/Pete. introducing characters with "here was a thing they wanted" and "here was a thing they feared."
big opt-in to Pete as a woman, cis or trans. canon divergence, alternate first meetings. writing to each other when they're apart.
just think these two are so fascinating in their similarities and differences. I love that Beatriz feels this mysterious attraction and immediately goes 'I need to study this under a microscope and figure out what this means' and Pete goes 'oh I know what this is and it's bad news' for the HOLE IN HIS HEART. physically and emotionally. so absolutely these old soul teenagers trying to figure out what they feel and how to deal with it and getting together. (or an ambiguous or platonic or unrequited relationship -- any way you like of them working out what they want from life and each other.)
The Bean Trees: Estevan is a native Guatemalan man seeking refuge in 1980s Arizona. It's a novel about creating family and how the right thing isn't always the legal thing. No letter, but my prompts:
things I love about the canon: found family (I adore Taylor's relationships with Mattie, Lou Ann, Turtle, Estevan, and edna poppy -- ensemble fic more than welcome), Taylor making her own life from a young age, sense of place, Estevan's gentleness and joy, late night conversations, wonder at the desert and nature in general
I like Taylor and Estevan however, as long as her canonical feelings are preserved! does Estevan feel the same or not? pining and forbidden love is so delicious. friendship moments like the picnic are very welcome, as well as angstier moments. I think between being nominally catholic and having gone through as much as he did with Esperanza at his side, he wouldn't cheat on her (beyond kissing Taylor at the end of the book), but I'd be happy for AUs where he and Taylor met when one of them (Esteban, let's be honest) got some sort of grant to study abroad or something. or maybe they became naturalised citizens and got back in contact and Taylor and turtle got to visit then 5 or 10 years down the road! letters they sent (or never sent) to each other?

Fandom and character(s): Slow Horses - Roddy Ho, Louisa Guy
Premise (wiki): "Slough House is an administrative purgatory for MI5 service rejects who have bungled their job but have not been sacked. Those consigned there are known as "slow horses". They are expected to endure dull, paper-pushing tasks, along with occasional mental abuse from their miserable boss, Jackson Lamb, who expects them to quit out of boredom or frustration. Life in Slough House is defined by drudgery. Yet the Slow Horses somehow get involved investigating schemes endangering Britain. "
Request: I've requested that if possible, a fic centres on my beloved Roddy Ho, who is the team tech wizard, ex-hacker and was passed to Slough House not because he's bad, but because he's just such a giant asshole nobody else wanted him.

A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia (1990)
Promo: link to promo post. In short: "sequel" to the 1962 Lawrence of Arabia featuring a focus on geopolitics and the relationship between Emir Faisal and T.E. Lawrence, with great performances and writing.
Requested character of color: Faisal bin Hussein bin Ali al-Hashemi
Shoujo Kakumei Utena | Revolutionary Girl Utena
Promo: It's really hard to summarize Utena, often called the "Evangelion of shoujo anime," as in, it's an anime that is full of metaphor and symbolism and deeper meanings that instead engages with the genre of relationship-focused anime for teenage girls for its genre trappings. It's a story about a headstrong transfer student sword-fighting her way through her new school's elaborate system of duels, called for by a mysterious entity known as the "End of the World." It's also about the destructive nature of gender and heteropatriarchy and how it constrains the way we imagine both our futures and our pasts, and how that particularly plays out in the way that adolescents develop and come to understand their sexualities. It's also a heartrending love story between two girls, all the more groundbreaking for the fact that it was released in 1997. And that's not even going into its fascinating supporting cast; this series has one of my favorite sets of characters in anything ever and I have a new set of favorites every time I rewatch. Strong candidate (and my personal choice) for the title of "greatest anime of all time," seriously.
Requested characters of color: Any nominated character (all qualify as characters of color) - though current personal favorites are Arisugawa Juri, Saionji Kyouichi, Mikage Souji, Kaoru Miki, Kiryuu Nanami, Wakaba Shinohara and of course the two main characters, Himemiya Anthy and Tenjou Utena.
Wayfarers Series - Becky Chambers
Promo: The promo post by penguinzero explains it well. Basically, a very exploratory, Star Trek-esque style space opera book series of mostly standalone (with a few overarching characters) sci-fi stories set in an expansive world of many different planets with distinct cultures, biology and worldbuilding, but with a scrappier, more Cowboy Bebop or Space Dandy feeling to what it's like to live in that world, without plunging into outright darkness; the books are eventful, but fairly hopeful. Some things I love about it: the aliens feel truly alien and the cultures avoid the "just one trait" problem that a lot of this kind of sci-fi (for instance, Star Trek) can tend to have; humans and human cultures don't have much power in this world and are considered pretty minor by residents of other worlds; lots of diversity (including lots of characters of color) among the human cast; and lots of LGBTQ+ characters and unusual approaches to sexuality, gender and relationships.
Requested character of color: Rosemary Harper
Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu | Legend of Galactic Heroes
Promo: I can't really do better than this promo post from natsinator, but a gloriously dense political and military drama about warring space empires in the far future, featuring really fascinating characters and relationships (of all kinds) between them, philosophical and historical discussions that leave you with a lot to chew on, and sooo much gay subtext especially for something of that era (1980s) that isn't aimed at the typical BL audience. If you love a lot of politics and philosophy in your science fiction but would prefer something more character-driven than, say, Asimov's Foundation, this is the series for you.
Requested character of color: Yang Wenli
おにいさまへ... | Oniisama e... | Dear Brother
Promo: 1970s manga and 1990s anime by the pioneering Ikeda Riyoko (of Rose of Versailles fame) that follows the complex relationships, rivalries and betrayals among the female students at a private school in Japan. Centering, as usual, on an everygirl scholarship transfer student, Nanako, she finds herself drawn into the dramas of the school's most elite students when she's selected for the exclusive society known as the Sorority. There are a loooooot of even fairly explicit queer themes here, and while it follows the typical construction of manga/anime of those times where people can't end the story openly queer and happy, it's shockingly forthright about that for its time period, and you can see its influence on later yuri series from similarly serious, thoughtful stuff like the aforementioned Revolutionary Girl Utena to sillier genre fare like Strawberry Panic.
Requested characters of color: Misonoo Nanako, Asaka Rei, Shinobu Mariko, Orihara Kaoru
Other nominated characters of color I'm eager to see show up: Any but particularly Ichinomiya Fukiko and Arikura Tomoko
The Wire
Promo: Regularly and deservedly acclaimed as one of the best television series of all time, it follows a wide cast of characters who illustrate the corruption in various sectors of society in Baltimore, Maryland - from the police force to the education system to local/state politics to trade and the ports - in failing to contain the city's organized crime problem, especially with regard to the drug trade. There are a lot of characters of color (mostly, but not exclusively, Black Americans) in basically every role and sector of this show. If you like video essays, here's a good spoiler-free one that explains why the show is so special. (Also, your requester here went to university in and has spent a good chunk of adult life in Baltimore, so I can speak to how well the show captures the city and that's another huge part of what I like about it.)
Requested characters of color: Omar Little, Brother Mouzone
Other nominated characters of color I'm eager to see show up: Kima Greggs, Avon Barksdale, Stringer Bell, Reginald "Bubbles" Cousins

Resident Alien (TV 2021)
Dan Twelvetrees
I love Gary Farmer and I need a story with Dan. I am not okay. I need to know more about Dan Twelvetrees. They could have taken the character down the standard Wise Native path. Instead, they went for Tired Dad which is very valid. He’s a veteran, he had a BAND, and when a baby that wasn’t his was dropped in his lap he just went ‘guess I’m a father now’!
Seriously I need more of Dan begin Tired Dad to the town (like, bring in any other characters that need some parenting, especially D’Arcy). And if you want to tell the story of how he decided to just be Asta’s dad I would love that to. I mean what was the paperwork involved? What did the band say? What did his people say when he showed up with a baby that wasn’t technically his? That moment when Asta came back after talking to her birth mother and he looks at her and just throws everyone out is so beautiful. Just one look and he knew. What did he go through after the war but before Asta came into his life? Seriously, go nuts, just give me more of Dan Twelvetrees.

Fandom: Tintin
Character: Tchang Tchong-Jen. Tchang is an orphaned Chinese boy Tintin meets and befriends during "The Blue Lotus". I know many people in the Tintin-fandom like the pairing Tintin/Haddock and the relationship between Tintin & captain Haddock. But Tintin's relationship with Tchang is also very deep-felt and important: First of all, Tchang is based on a real Chinese man, Zhang Chongren, whom Hergé befriended while working on that story (Tchang's name is a different spelling/transcription of Zhang Chongren). Second: It's very clear, when reading The Blue Lotus, that Tintin and Tchang grow very close during that adventure. They are both completely dissolved in tears when Tintin leaves for Europe at the end. Tchang means so much to Tintin that he later, in Tintin in Tibet, decides to go on a rescue mission to find Tchang after a plane crash in the Himalayas - with only a dream that Tchang is still alive to support that mission. In the following story, The Castafiore Emerald, Tintin receives a letter from Tchang. As an eagle-eyed fan on Tumblr once noted, it's an awful big sheet of paper if all he wrote to Tintin is that all is well and please send your regards to the captain. ;) (As that is what Tintin tells Haddock is in the letter).
So, yeah, exploration of Tchang, their relationship (gen or ship, all is welcome)...and, sadly, the challenges/prejudice they probably/likely/might have faced in 1930's-50's Europe.

Peak Time (Korea TV 2023): Lee Hangyul, Moon Jongup, Lee Changmin | E-Chan, Jung Sihyun | Xiwoo
A Korean idol group survival competition show (a really fun watch if you like popular music and dance, and if you enjoy watching people getting better at things in a supportive environment). All requested characters are South Korean.
你微笑时很美 | Falling Into Your Smile (TV): Lee Kun Hyeok | Hierophant | Pope
Falling Into Your Smile is a Chinese eSports drama centered around a female main character who is the first female Onmyoji Arena (a MOBA similar to League of Legends) player to play professionally; it touches upon a number of recent topics of discussion in the Chinese eSports scene, more than most eSports dramas (though it is still at heart also a romantic comedy). I've requested one of the supporting characters, a South Korean player who was friends with the male lead while they were both playing in the Korean league in backstory, and who joins the Chinese "team next door" to the team that the leads are both in.
沙海 | Tomb of the Sea (TV): Kan Jian, Luo Que
Tomb of the Sea | Sand Sea | Shāhǎi is one of the TV series based on the 盗墓笔记 | The Grave Robbers' Chronicles | The Lost Tomb | Dàomù Bǐjì novels; it's technically based on the second sequel to the main set of novels but it works especially well as a standalone television series, as the main storylines focus more on characters other than the main protagonist for the overarching series. I've requested two side characters who are both presumably Chinese (I'm not sure either of their backgrounds is ever discussed in detail), who spend much of the plot following around the head of a secretive organization of loosely-affliated tomb-robbing families (primarily to help watch his back and take out thugs).
盗墓笔记重启 | The Lost Tomb Reboot (TV): Huo Daofu
Based on the third sequel of the 盗墓笔记 | The Grave Robbers' Chronicles | The Lost Tomb | Dàomù Bǐjì novels, The Lost Tomb Reboot | Reunion: The Sound of Providence is also a good standalone or place to start for this franchise, as it was clearly intended so when made; I love the cast of this one, especially for the main trio, older but not necessarily wiser. I've requested a side character I find intriguing; he is presumably Chinese (again, his backstory is somewhat mysterious, but the majority of the characters are Chinese and their primary social context is that of ~contemporary China).
有翡 | Legend of Fei (TV): Li Yan, Yang Jin, Ying Hecong
Legend of Fei is a Chinese wuxia drama that is fun if somewhat uneven, adapted from the novel Bandits (有匪) by priest. The three characters I've requested are Chinese, and they're a trio full of delightful shenanigans.
ちはやふる | Chihayafuru (Anime & Manga): Mashima Taichi, Wataya Arata
Chihayafuru is a wonderful slice-of-life high school sports manga & anime centered around players of the Japanese poetry card game karuta. The characters I've requested are Japanese.
