That's the one I meant, yes. Geraldine McEwan has always been my favourite TV version of Jane Marple - I think she manages the "fluffy old dear exterior with a spine of steel" characterisation better than even Joan Hickson could, partly because she so *looks* the part, where Hickson's Marple doesn't really look like someone who could reasonably be described as a "fluffy old dear". That climatic scene of Nemesis gives me shivers, though, and there are few adaptations of Christie that change the story so thoroughly and are still capable of *that*.

Thanks muchly for the info on the new WDTAE adaptation, and your awesome promo post! I'll have to watch that - I have a Britbox subscription, but for some reason it hasn't come up in my recs there, which doesn't make a lot of sense when most of their Christie adaptations are in my watchlist (or re-watchlist, as it were) already.

I completely agree about the Marple WDTAE btw, that thing is frankly a trashfire except for some of the casting. The plot changes muck it up completely, and one can tell that Julia McKenzie wasn't quite settled into her main role in the series at that early point either. I skip it every time I do a rewatch of the show.

I do remember thinking Geraldine McEwan came off best as Marple - and that despite the changes to the original Nemesis plot the climax was still very good, so it's probably time for a rewatch. I've been trying to make my way through the older film adaptations of Christie books that I haven't seen before rather than rewatching lately - I made time for a rewatch of the Marple WDTAE after seeing the new one out of curiosity since I hadn't seen it since it originally came out and I thought it couldn't be as bad as I remembered, but it was in fact worse :( The plot changes really do turn it into something entirely different and in general I think it's a bad one to insert Marple into anyway since the story is supposed to be about Bobby & Frankie having a different main makes them less necessary.

I'm glad to have brought the new WDTAE to your attention - very weird that BritBox hasn't shown it to you yet if you're already watching a lot of Christie stuff on there, but I have been generally wondering about whether they've promoted it enough since I've had to tell a few people about it who I'd have expected to know it existed at least. I hope you enjoy it!

Enjoy! If you're going through the older adaptations, the Rene Craig-directed And Then There Were None is a standout among Christie film adaptations, if you haven't yet seen that. 1945, I think. They had to change a bit of backstory to make it pass the Hays Code, and I cringe sometimes when I think of their changing the nationality of a certain character, but it's still an excellent piece of work for its time. I agree it was a mistake to bring Marple into WDTAE. They did the same thing with one of the Tommy & Tuppence stories, and that didn't work well either. Such a pity. It's not as if existing fans wouldn't go for a standalone adaptation: we do that all the time, don't we?

Yes, I don't understand why they didn't, either. I've just upgraded my Chromecast after the old one I had attached to my TV conked out just after the title sequence, but I'm looking forward to watching the rest of it, based on that! ♥ Thanks so much for this. I don't have live TV, but I'd have expected them to rec it to me based on my crime drama history, even if I hadn't had all those Christie adaptations in it. Very strange.

I did see that one recently - I was glad I knew about the changes advance but I did think it was fairly well done given all that, my main issue was that it ended up being a bit of a visual strain to watch for me as the version on Amazon Prime was colourised in an odd way (I'm not sure why as I have since discovered other places that have it available where it's in normal black and white which would have been fine).
I have since watched the 1980 version of WDTAE, which is a big improvement over the Marple one but I'm still partial to the new one - hopefully you don't have more technical issues when you get to the rest.

How very odd! Amazon hadn't colourised it at all when I last watched it on Prime, which I think was a year or two ago. I wonder why they didn't leave the original accessible as well? It seems only logical to have both versions up, it's not like they were fixing a damaged file. Oh well...

Hmm, the 1980 version is not one I've yet seen. I've been refreshing my memory of the David Lean film version of Blithe Spirit while I waited for my upgrade. Still planning to carry on with the other WDTAE, once I've finished my DYW letter. I'll let you know how it goes :)

I don't know if maybe it's a regional thing with Prime having the colourised version for me as it seemed like a recent addition to the site rather than one that had been there for a while. I can't see a different version on the site but that said I (re)watched the film Charade on it only a couple of weeks before that and thought the quality a bit grainy only to discover after watching it that they also had a remastered/more HQ version of Charade too just as a totally separate listing, so it's certainly something they might do.

The 1980 WDTAE did have the surprise treat of starring the same leads as the 1980s Tommy & Tuppence series, but that mostly made me want to track down some of those episodes to add to my older Christie viewings. & The David Lean Blithe Spirit is probably something I could do with a refresh of as well, but I do remember it as excellent viewing.
