Make The Yuletide Gay 2021

What is Make the Yuletide Gay?

While introducing m/m and f/f content into an otherwise cishet canon is one of the many delights that fandom brings into the world, this mini-challenge is made with the purpose of bringing together those who love LGBT+ characters or canon same-gender relationships and who want to write, request, and read works centered around those characters.

What counts as a canon LGBT+ character or canon relationship? For the purposes of this challenge, we rely on the honor system. If your fandom was created in a time period or in a country where coded language/actions were needed we understand that it might not be as explicit and clear-cut as one without those limitations.

Keep in mind that this challenge is geared towards those who are actively interested in canon LGBT+ characters/couples. Including a request that falls more into the headcanon or fanon category may mean that it does not catch the attention of those who are into canon content, and those who prefer fanon will likely not check out this post due to the canon focus, e.g. you may be marketing to the wrong crowd and wasting your time!

How Do I Participate?

  • Leave a comment on this post linking your letter if you are requesting canon LGBT+ characters or a canon same-gender relationship.
    • If you don't have a letter, you can still leave prompts here, but make sure to include your AO3 name and requested fandom information.
    • Add any optional details you want in the comment -- link to a ship manifesto or fanvids or gifs, give the tl;dr dynamics of your character/requested relationship, whatever.
  • When it comes time to upload your works, tag with "Make the Yuletide Gay" on AO3 so interested parties can easily find it.
    • Even if your recip didn't explicitly "sign up" to this post, please still tag if you're writing about a canon LGBT+ character or ship!
  • There will be a comment thread where you can promo your favorite characters/relationships in the tagset to perhaps signal other people's requests even if you didn't request a canon LGBT+ character or relationship yourself this year. The best thing about Yuletide is the gifts other people can feel like our own!
  • Add participation to the app so that anyone browsing will know that you're signed up for this challenge!
  • Have fun!

(Language copied from the original mini-challenge and reformatted to fit the modern mini-challenge format thanks to YulePorn's example.)

Gideon the Ninth | The Locked Tomb Series - Tamsyn Muir

Clears the challenge barrier probably for the last time for 2021, as Worldbuilding is the only tag that made it through, but, this is essentially a "pansexual unless otherwise stated" universe, and the most central canon relationships are LGBTQIA+ (Gideon/Harrowhark, Ianthe/Harrowhark, The Body/Harrowhark (all f/f), and John/Augustine/Mercymorn, m/m/f threesome (Dios Apate Minor!)).

My Letter: Here!

Fandom: Mage & Demon Queen

Characters/Ships: Malori/Velverosa, Princess Leora

More: Mal and Vel are canonically queer (and in love), and I'm asking for more of them! Leora is also both trans and queer (although her crush on Mal is sadly unrequited), and I'd love more about her, too!

Ellie and Abbie (and Ellie's Dead Aunt) (Movie 2020)

[personal profile] itsanizzyb 2021-10-22 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ellie and Abbie (and Ellie's Dead Aunt) is an Australian teen rom-com about a queer girl and her love interest. It is a movie, runtime: 1 hour 22 mins.

It centres around Ellie, a proudly gay seventeen-year-old, who is visited by her "fairy" godmother (her deceased aunt), Tara, after coming out to her mum. The movie follows her as she tries to work up the courage to ask her crush to the formal and learns about her family history and queer activism through her aunt. The movie has an amazing soundtrack, amazing cast (esp. if you're Kiwi/Aussie), and it's all-around heart-warming.

Highlights:

Abbie is played by Zoe Terakes, an Indigenous non-binary actor who you may recognise from Nine Perfect Strangers!
Rachel House, beloved NZ icon, gives a stunning performance as Ellie's other aunt figure.
Tara's dyke camp everything.
It deals with some very heavy themes around queer history and queer futures but does it in a way that I thought was really great at interweaving the two and showing how they are related.
Hopeful! Funny! Heart-warming!
"I think we should have the sex talk again, because lesbian sex is very different." "Nope, NOPE!" "And I don't want you to learn about it from PORN!"

My Letter

My prompts: (more in my letter)
- Abbie’s perspective on the happenings in the movie. Maybe she has her own imaginary conversations with Tara?
- Ellie and Abbie explore their queer history together - perhaps they could visit a small museum together, walk Oxford Street together, etc.
- Abbie takes Ellie to her youth group and Ellie gets to meet people who knew Tara in her capacity as a queer organiser.

Warriors (TV 2019): Ah Toy is a canonically bisexual madame in 1870's San Francisco's Chinatown. She's involved with both Ah Sahm(m) and Nellie Davenport(f). There is also some interesting subtext with Ah Sahm's sister and sworn enemy, Mai Ling. Ah Toy is based on a real woman!

Motherland: Fort Salem (TV): A group of young witches are conscripted into the military. Raelle Collar is seduced by Scylla Ramshorn, who is secretly working for the enemy and falls in love with her while trying to entrap her. This is a fantastic dynamic and I would love a fic that explores it!

Okkupert | Occupied (TV 2015): Irina Sidorova is the Russian ambassador to Norway during a silk glove occupation - and she is having a child with another woman. (The Russians are no more tolerant of LGBTQ+ people in this TV series than in our world.) Irina is a brilliant and sympathetic antagonist. You could show her with her canonical lover, but I would also really enjoy reading a story with her and Anita Rygh, the Norwegian PM, matching wits and struggling for power in bed just like they do politically.

Sleepless Domain (Webcomic)
Kokoro Aichi | Heartful Punch, Undine Wells | Alchemical Water
A magical girl webcomic that is unabashedly queer. Undine is a magical girl who's lost her team in a shocking incident; Kokoro is the famous solo magical girl who becomes her closest friend in the wake of it. They've become an official couple in recent chapters, and I'd love to see more exploring it.

The Locked Tomb Series | Gideon the Ninth Series - Tamsyn Muir
Gideon Nav, Harrowhark Nonagesimus
The series is often summed up by a tongue-in-cheek cover blurb describing it as 'lesbian necromancers in space,' and while it's meant humorously, it's also entirely true. The entire series seems to be a slow burn enemies-to-lovers romance between the necromancer Harrowhark Nonagesimus and her unwilling cavalier Gideon Nav, and there's lots of incidental queerness along the way. I'm asking for anything exploring the dynamic between the two of them.

Sexiled: My Sexist Party Leader Kicked Me Out So I Teamed Up With a A Legendary Sorceress!
Laplace (Sexiled), Tanya Artemiciov (Sexiled)
A light novel series originally created as a response to a sexism scandal in Japan's medical university, it follows a pair of women overthrowing the patriarchal norms of their fantasy world. Gloriously unashamed of its status as a feminist power fantasy. While the queerness isn't quite as textual as in my other choices, the ancient sorceress Laplace is explicitly smitten with her more modern partner, Tanya, and while Tanya hasn't actually caught on yet, she seems to be inclined to reciprocate when she does.

あさがおと加瀬さん | Asagao to Kase-san | Kase-san and Morning Glories (Manga)
Kase Tomoka, Yamada Yui
A yuri manga series where the heroines become a couple very early on, and the rest of the story is about them navigating their relationship, dealing with the obstacles in their way, enjoying their mutual love, and going off to college together.

I'm confused... Did Gideon and Harrowhark make it through, this year? I would've requested them myself, but only the Worldbuilding tag was available in the dropdown. I figured Gideon and Harrow were too heavily tagged in too many stories to be eligible, since the fandom was so close to the line this year. But if they *are*...

Thanks for the promo on Sexiled, I'll have to read that! It sounds awesome ♥

October Daye series - Seanan McGuire
Characters: Simon Torquill, Patrick Lorden, Dianda Lorden

More: Characters are in a canonical triad relationship. Dianda (a mermaid, sort of) and Patrick (fae) have been married for quite some time. Patrick and Simon (also fae) have a longstanding attraction that Simon has been too busy (read: cursed) to pursue, and Simon probably assumed that, since Patrick got married, he wasn't interested anymore. Dianda is a "the more the merrier" type, especially if "more" includes violence or breaking surface-dweller social conventions.

It's a delightful fandom with lots of LGBT+ characters. It's probably a bit daunting for newcomers, however; it's currently at 15 books + some online short stories + some bits of crossovers with other series.

MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) - Lil Nas X
Characters Any (of: Lil Nas X, Satan, Snake)

More: It doesn't get more queer than "I will slide down a stripper pole to Hell and fuck whoever I find there."

I have almost nothing in mind for prompts/plotbunnies for this, although I expect to be coming up with some soon anyway. This is one where I thought, "ooh, pretty pretty visuals + really intense lyrics... could make for good stories yes plz?"

The Turner Series - Cat Sebastian
Requested characters: Eleanor Standish, Julian Medlock, Lord Courtenay
Courtenay/Julian is the main relationship in the third novel of this queer historical romance series (though both characters are introduced in the second volume). My prompts are for more of the romance and/or gen dynamics with Eleanor, who is Julian's sister and a close friend to Courtenay. I'm also open to appearances of other queer characters from the previous books.

Utopia Avenue - David Mitchell
Requested characters: Elf Holloway, Dean Moss, Jasper de Zoet
I wrote a promo thingy about this canon. Elf is in an f/f relationship by the end and I'd be happy to receive any fic about her supportive friendships with her bandmates. Though the character wasn't nominated, it's potentially interesting that the band's manager is also gay.

Requested characters: Milton Isaacs, Brackish Okun

Do you like aliens? Do you like fun, mad scientist characters (who live in Area 51?) Do you like the trope of the grumpy one and the sunshine one? What about when the grumpy one is into knitting, orchids, and waits [redacted] years for the sunshine one to recover from a coma induced by Alien Stuff™? Then Brackish and Milton are for you!

If you've seen the first Independence Day, you’ll probably remember the overexcited, long-haired scientist played by Data from Star Trek who does the alien autopsy. Well, the doctor accompanying him when he meets the president is his partner! (Watch the extended/director's cut for all their scenes.) The sequel gives them more screentime, and while there are *cough* issues *cough* with the portrayal of their relationship... that's what fanfic's for, right? ;)

Essentially - gay dads taking care of kids who happen to be gnomes, wyverns, weredogs, fairies, indefinable blobs, and maybe even the son of the devil. It shouldn't be so notable, but it continues to be so very refreshing when a work has queer characters who just are--no angst, no confusion, not even any real homophobia. Requests that fit:

The Will Darling Adventures - K.J. Charles
Characters: Will Darling, Kim Secretan

Will and Kim are the main couple of this three book (plus two short stories) queer historical romance. My prompts for them are in the letter, but I would like to highlight that I'm really interested in seeing them interact with 1920s queer culture. Will is bisexual with limited experience with men and no real exposure to it, whereas Kim is gay and much more comfortable with it. I would love to see how that plays out.

Society of Gentlemen - K. J. Charles
Characters: Francis Webster, Gabriel Ashleigh

Francis and Gabriel are one of the many couples in this series and the only one that did not get a full-length novel. The books are about a queer found family in Regency England, and at the start of the books Gabriel is a newcomer to the set. I would love to see how he reacts to suddenly having this found family after never really engaging in a queer social setting.

My letter contains lots of gushing about how much I love this pair, so you can find more details and specific prompts there. The tl;dr version is:

I love Fen’s femininity, stealth competence, keen perception, emotional intelligence, unexpected confidence when it comes to romance. I wish she had more opportunities to show the world outright how absolutely awesome she is.

I love Pat’s not-at-all-stealth competence and only slightly-stealth gentle side. I love the way she _sees_ Fen when nobody else does and I love the way she respects her.

relevant fandoms
Elemental Logic - Laurie J. Marks
requested lgbtq+ characters: Emil Paladin, Medric (implied: Emil/Medric)

gorgeous secondary world fantasy about surviving a guerrilla anticolonial war and then figuring out how to rebuild and transform society in its aftermath. the first book, Fire Logic, would provide you with enough information to write something about these two, although I would highly recommend checking out the whole series. in a very casual way I don’t think anyone in the series is straight? and I love that for all of them.

Coming Out on Top (visual novel)
requested lgbtq+ characters: Mark Matthews, Bradley "Brad" Melnick (implied: Mark/Brad)

quirky and sexy gay dating sim (available on Steam) with INCREDIBLE art, balancing charming and human stories and compelling characters with a lot of porn. I'm very open to adding other characters (Beau, Ian, other members of the football team), as long as Mark and Brad are involved.

Dragonriders of Pern - Anne McCaffrey
requested lgbtq+ characters: G'sel, sort of F'nor

if you haven't already read these books I probably would not recommend them (but if you wanted to start anyway, Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and Dragonsong would give you all the information we have about G'sel). G'sel is a green rider, and while his sexuality isn't explicitly dealt with in the books he appears in we know from elsewhere in the series that male green riders are all gay. I've also requested several other riders (F'nor, N'ton, T'gellan) — I'd be happy to see any of them paired with G'sel, but for Pern I'm happy to receive fic that's focused just on one of my requested characters, so if you'd rather pair G'sel with someone else, or with an OC, that's totally fine!

F'nor (Dragonflight and Dragonquest alone would give you enough info for him) also definitely has sex with men occasionally, at least in the context of mating flights, but it's not clear what his sexuality is outside of that, since he ends up in a monogamous relationship with a woman and the text doesn't comment on his feelings about any other men. so he's not quite on the same level/in the same position as G'sel.

The Girls I've Been - Tess Sharpe
Requested characters: Lee Ann O’Malley (aka Amelia Deveraux), Agent Marjorie North, Nora O’Malley
All three of my requested characters are canonically queer and are/have been in story-relevant same-sex relationships. Lee Ann O'Malley is a private investigator who worked for years to get her little sister Nora away from their conwoman mother and her abusive criminal husband, and Marjorie North is the FBI agent who Lee Ann met and manipulated into eventually helping her - but, they fell in love in the process. This didn't stop Lee Ann from betraying Marjorie's trust for Nora's sake, or from disappearing with her sister into new identities in a quiet California town, leaving a lot of unresolved feelings in her wake.

The book itself really only shows us the aftermath of their relationship, as it's mostly focused on Nora's experiences (past and present), so I'm requesting fic that explores and expands on the glimpses canon gives us; a tragic, complex love story riddled with deception and ulterior motives.

The book itself is an engaging YA thriller featuring themes around identity, relative morality, surviving abuse, and found family/building a life for yourself out of the ashes of the one you've left. It's a recent release and available in most formats. (And as I said, Nora is also queer, and in the book's "present" has started dating a cute and resourceful girl named Iris; while I'm not requesting anything centered on them as such, I'd be delighted to have their relationship feature in a story. They're adorable together.)

Just made a belated promo post over this-a-way.

Wayfarers Series - Becky Chambers
Requested characters: Sidra, Tak, Pepper, Owl
This one might be a little borderline, at least as far as my chosen characters go? Tak is an Aeluon, a humanoid alien species with more than two genders. Ze is a shon, and physically changes between female, male, and something in-between in regular cycles; queer by our human standards, but not necessarily by zir's. Several of my requests center around zir helping Sidra, an AI who spends canon struggling to integrate with her illegal android body (an installation she was not designed for) and find meaning in her existence, explore sexuality/romance (something that the character doesn't show much interest in within the text, although her previous iteration, installed in a spaceship, had been in a relationship with a human man).

The four-volume Wayfarers series in general is full of queerness, and features several queer couples (notably Rosemary Harper/Sissix Seshkethet in the first volume, and Isabel/Tamsin in the third). It's a space opera with tons of heart, and each book has a mostly-independent cast and stands alone well. I highly, highly recommend it.

Unwell: A Midwestern Gothic Mystery (podcast)
Requested characters: Joey, Lillian “Lily” Harper, Stella “Spikes” Cabrera
In this fabulous, creepy but also surprisingly warm and moving serial about a small town filled with eldritch secrets and conspiracy, Lily Harper, the prodigal daughter of the local boarding house's eccentric and beloved proprietor, is a queer woman who dates the (female) owner of the local record store, whose teen niece and aspiring audio/video producer Spikes visits on holidays and during the summer. Spikes' best friend Joey ... was also Lily's childhood best friend, and hasn't aged a day.

My requests for this fandom aren't really oriented towards queer identity or relationships as such, so much as history repeating itself and parallel narratives and ghosts? But I am interested in first crushes and the way best friends can develop an undercurrent of possibility for more! And anyway I definitely rec the podcast; it's wonderful.

Sex Education (tv)
Requested character: Lily Iglehart
Lily is a marvelous weirdo, obsessed with aliens and the creator of such things as a long-running, pornographic personal writing project (mostly prose, sometimes comics) and an over-the-top sexualized glam rock musical adaptation of Romeo & Juliet. She is also in a relationship with another girl, the adorable Ola Nyman. My request this year is entirely Lily-centric; I want to read about her continuing to pursue her fabulous xenophilic creative endeavors and real-life roleplay to her heart's content, whether with Ola or in other contexts/relationships.

This absurd and delightful tv show (three seasons on Netflix) features a wide variety of relationship configurations, and featured two nonbinary characters in its third season!

Randolph Carter | Cthulhu Mythos (HP Lovecraft)
Letter: https://dragoness-e.dreamwidth.org/143928.html

Given that HPL was a bundle of issues himself, with the self-awareness of a mushroom, and was writing in a time when you didn't have explicitly gay characters, it's hard to say if Carter was canonically gay. However, several of HPL's characters certainly acted like gay men in clandestine relationships--the two goth idiots in "The Hound" come to mind.

Randolph Carter, HPL's recurring character who may or may not have been a self-insert, had a relationship of some kind with Harvey Warren. I've seen an analysis by someone who knows a lot more about LGBTQ+ relationships than I do claim that it was a classic "older gay man/younger gay man" dynamic. I'd love to see someone write about this, or the more fanon-ish relationship between Carter and Richard Upton Pickman. (Canonically, they were just very good friends. We think.)

Letter Link: My Letter

Only one of my requests has canon queer characters, but I would be thrilled to get them as a couple!

I'm dropping my specific fandom thoughts/prompts below, but please see my letter for general DNWs and Likes.

Fandom(s): ROLLING IN THE DEEP Series - Mira Grant

Rating(s): Any

Groupings Requested: Though I requested "Any character" for this fandom this year, only two of the nominated characters are canonly queer and bonus in a relationship by the end of the sequel novel INTO THE DROWNING DEEP: Victoria “Tori” Stewart/Olivia Sanderson.

(I'll list all of the requested characters below as I'm game for any of them to also show up, but these two are the couple I'm interested in for this mini-challenge :)

Prompts!:
Any including: Victoria “Tori” Stewart, Olivia Sanderson, Ray Marino, Hallie Wilson, Worldbuilding, and Mermaids

Y’all Seanan McGuire (and her horror pen name Mira Grant) has claimed my all-time fave author title, and these books are the perfect example of why. Deep. Sea. Murder. Mermaids. DEEP SEA MURDER MERMAIDS. Run amok here seriously, I’m game for anything including crossovers especially though I have NO IDEA how you’ll pull it off with some of the other fandoms I’ve requested LOL. Specific character focused fic would rock, but you could definitely go for non-character specific worldbuilding/mixed media or the mermaids in other time periods/fandoms, too if that’s your thing.

Prompt wise: 1) Pacific Rim AU with Tori/Olivia as pilots against the massive monstrous females of the species who’ve finally figured out how to survive out of the deepest depths long enough to reach shore to hunt? 2) Ray & Olivia’s bromance was one of my fave relationships here and I’d love to see him survive – fixit fic for the win! 3) Anything playing with the mixed media format from the books: transcripts from the survivors of the Melucine, Hallie’s lexicon of mermaid sign, Tori & Louis’s scientific presentation of their findings, emails between Oliva and/or Ray and Imagine? 4) The previous “mockumentaries” Imagine did – were they all actually fake or did the people on site cover something up? Were Olivia and Ray (and possibly Anne?) involved in tracking down Bigfoot or a chupacabra? Is Tori dragged along in their wake for the next mockumentary after the Melucine? Aside from that, I’m always a fan of stories that crossover various fandoms by the same author, so I’d totally be game with a related Seanan McGuire/Mira Grant verse character or setting colliding with this one!

Leif & Thorn: Hazel and Hyacinth, the title characters, and also like half the cast

AO3 Name: [archiveofourown.org profile] lielac
Letter Link: On my Dreamwidth
Fandom: Leif & Thorn
Characters/Ships: Hazel Cherieshnya/Hyacinth Lavande
Details: To quote canon: "They're also 'technically not dating', but for them it's just adorable."

Hazel and Hyacinth are two goth teenagers, both into things like "animal skulls" and "writing/reading *punk stories about people being tortured for hurt/comfort purposes" and "drawing corpses, sometimes with blood on them". Hazel is autistic (called "changeling syndrome" in-universe) and has chronic pain from arthritis, and Hyacinth is immensely supportive and accepting of Hazel's differences. Hyacinth is really, really obviously adoring of Hazel, especially Hazel's creativity and skills, and it's so sweet.

Additional Characters: A lot of them, really, but notably the title characters Leif and Thorn
Details: In addition to my requested adorable teenagers, Leif & Thorn has a lot of queer characters. It's actually named after two of them, and Leif and Thorn are in a very slow-burn romance. Leif is an indentured servant (read: slave) working at the Sonheim embassy in Ceannis's capitol Central, and Thorn is a knight of Ceannis assigned to guard the embassy. Leif is bi and Thorn is either bi or gay, and they were "technically not dating" for reasons including "extremely dubious consent due to magically-enforced indenture contracts".

If you like your slow-burn M/M romance with a heavy through-line of "what is consent, really, and can it exist when your boyfriend is a slave of a foreign state and you have to rent him out to go on dates and he has a compulsion chip in his neck that zaps him if he doesn't follow the orders of whoever's rented him for the evening (or engages in sexual activity or even kissing when the renter hasn't purchased that)", this comic will deliver.

Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh
Curtis Craig, Trevor Barnes
Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh is FMV point-and-click horror game released by Sierra in 1996. The player plays Curtis Craig, a 26-year-old introverted office worker at a pharmaceutical company in Seattle. Curtis is experiencing gory hallucinations, causing him to worry about his sanity. At the same time, some of his coworkers are gruesomely killed, and Curtis is a suspect. He starts to look into if there is a connection between these deaths, his hallucinations, his own past, and the company he works for. I wrote a longer promo post for the game here.

Trevor is Curtis's best friend and is openly gay. He and Curtis talk about Trevor's dates with men and they are casual, open, and loving with one another. Curtis has complicated relationships with two women in the game, and admits to his therapist that he is also attracted to Trevor and does not know what to do about it. This make Curtis a very early and rare example of a canonically bisexual male video game protagonist. He also talks about his fascination with kink and bondage, which is also explored in the game.

Peep Show
Jeremy Usbourne, Mark Corrigan
Peep Show is a British sitcom about two best friends and roommates, Mark and Jeremy. Mark is more neurotic and Jeremy is more of a dirtbag. The main "gimmick" of the show is that the viewer is able to hear Mark and Jeremy's thoughts, accompanied by POV shots from the two of them.

Jeremy is canonically bi and makes comments about having slept with men going back to the first series, and in later series he starts a relationship with a man and tries to reckon with his sexuality. Here is a clip from that plot bit. Additionally, at one point Mark briefly wonders if he might also be attracted to a man, concluding "I'm not gay. Possibly bi, but basically uncurious," but never goes any further with it.

Arden St. Ives - Alexis Hall -- Canon is an m/m bildom romance. Most of my requests are for the central canon couple. I especially would love to see people's ideas of how our wounded hero Caspian can continue the healing process that he has only just begun when canon ends. I'd also love something with a Happy Ever After for the aro/ace side character.

Docile - K.M. Szpara -- a somewhat disturbing examination of consent and its absence. I'd love fic for the canon couple rebuilding a healthy relationship after the absolute dumpster fire they stumble through in the book. Alternatively, there's a side throuple where one of the male partners is kinky a.f. and I'd love to see what he and the other male partner get up to.

For Real - Alexis Hall -- jaded sub, young enthusiastic dom manage to find love despite significant idiocy on both their parts. I'd love hot sex or sweet domesticity for the m/m central couple, or an exploration of a briefly-appearing but utterly intriguing m/m side couple.

Fandom: A Glass of Blessings - Barbara Pym
Piers Longridge

A Glass of Blessings is a funny, subtle and generally delightful novel from 1958 in which a middle-class London housewife goes to church a lot, befriends the mysterious and fascinating Piers Longridge and learns a few things about life and herself. The sympathetic portrayal of Piers as a gay character and his relationship with his boyfriend Keith is unusual for the time, and interesting and subversive in a quiet sort of a way. There's a great deal of room to explore more about Piers, and that's what I would love to receive in a fic!
