I've whittled my nominations down to four, or rather five:

This Robin Hood ballad, Anonymous - characters Robin Hood, Little John, Queen
The Earthly Paradise, William Morris - characters Laurence of Swabia, Nicholas of Breton, Rolf of Viken, Elder of the City
Snow-Bound, John Greenleaf Whittier - characters Father, Mother, Harriet Livermore, Schoolmaster
Orlando Furioso, Ariosto - characters Guidone, Aliera, Marfisa, Elbino
Orlando Furioso, Ariosto - characters Ruggiero, Alcina

The hesitation in those last two is, do I want Alessandretta (including the femslash possibilities of Marfisa) or do I want wuxia on Alcina's island and the nearby mainland, which are Japan and China? Hmmm.

Anyone have thoughts/suggestions?
