Liar! (Visual Novel)

FANDOM NAME: Voltage Inc.'s Liar! Series

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Are you into romance? Do you enjoy mystery-themed visual novels like Ace Attorney and Danganronpa? Can you tolerate having to answer silly trivia questions about fashion and etiquette? If your answer to these questions is "yes", Liar! might be for you.

Known as "Doubt!" in Japan, Liar! is a free mobile app game that combines the conventions of dating sims with Phoenix Wright-style investigations. In the first game, Uncover the Truth, you play as a newly-single wedding planner who, after successfully exposing her boyfriend as a cheater, is searching for Mr. Right. In order to find him, you attend a matchmaking party and end up meeting ten potential candidates, all of whom seem to be total husband material at first glance. Unfortunately, as a sassy fortuneteller informs you, all is not as it seems: nine out of the ten have major Issues, and it's up to you to ferret out each Liar's true intentions. From then on, the story unfolds as a process of elimination with each chapter having you give one of the guys the boot. You can choose to pay real money to progress more quickly, but you can definitely get through the main game without doing so. The series has apparently been a big hit in Japan, with two more games and a live-action movie currently in the works.

I feel that there are many things to love about Liar!, first and foremost being its fun cast of characters. The MC is definitely not a blank slate and has plenty of quirks and flaws of her own (most notably an obsession with takoyaki and a serious aversion to housework). Each potential Liar is very well-developed, and it's entirely possible that you'll find yourself still liking a few of them even after their dark secret has been revealed. Plus, there are Lover's Routes for the last five that allow you to see what finding love with them could have been like if MC had made a different choice.

The localization team did a great job with this game, and there are so many jokes and one-liners that were hilariously well-adapted for the English version. There are also tons of pop culture references and nods to existing game and anime series. The two sequels: Liar! Office Deception and Liar! Scheming Socialites, are super fun as well, and in them, your pool of Liars also includes several female characters.

Did I also mention the soundtrack is super catchy??

In short: I laughed (sometimes so hard I had to put down my game), I cried (looking at you, 7th Liar Lover's Route), and I found myself becoming furiously indignant on the main character's behalf multiple times. All in all, I have to say I would never have expected to be so satisfied by a game that cost me nothing except for a few minutes of my time each day.

WHERE CAN I FIND IT?: The game can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. I have also successfully managed to play the Japanese version of the game using QooApp and on the PC with Bluestacks.

As for fanworks, I maintain a Liar!-focused Tumblr as well as a random screenshots blog. (Major spoiler warning for both links).
