Artworks in the 2017 Tagset

ETA: Blue Plate Special

Below is a list of the artwork nominated this year, with links. If I've missed anything, or if anyone has better links to the art, please leave me a comment.

This year I'm also making a series of comment threads, one for each art fandom, and I encourage anyone who is interested to do a quick bit of fandom pimping in the relevant thread. What sort of prompts might you be interested in? What interests you about the art?

Tentacle Monster Under the Counter

Dixit (Card Game)
Pinterest
Small thumbnails identifying all the cards
Google search

This is a card game, but I think it probably more or less counts as an art prompt - the game involves a pack of cards with interesting illustrations, and unless the nominator turns up to say they had something different in mind, I think it's most likely the requests will be for stories inspired by the art on the cards. I can't find one perfect site to link to showing all the art: if you have a pinterest account I think you can probably see all or most of the cards at the first link. The second link has very small thumbnails allowing you to identify which card images you've found elsewhere belong in which pack. The third link merely saves you the time of typing dixit cards into google image search. If anyone requesting this has direct links to better quality images of cards they particularly like, please comment with the link and I'll add it in.

Elements - Experiments in Character Design - Kaycie D.
Beryllium (Elements Character Design)
Chlorine (Elements Character Design) (sorry, couldn't find a better image)

Things from the Flood Part I
Things from the Flood Part II
Characters:
Annika (Flodskörden)
Annika's Boyfriend (Flodskörden)
Female police officer (Flodskörden)
Stimulus Roadworker (Flodskörden)

Simon Stålenhag is perennial yuletide art favourite, but you could easily miss this one, since it's found under Books & Literature - quite correctly as it was published as a book, but it is indeed art, and the art is available online at the links above.

Le Fruit Defendu - Auguste Toulmouche
Le Fruit Defendu
Le Fruit Defendu (b&w)

The Garden Door - William Bruce Ellis Ranken
The Garden Door
Characters:
Man in a Grey Suit (The Garden Door - Ranken)
Man in a Hat (The Garden Door - Ranken)
Man With Flowers (The Garden Door - Ranken)

Hedgehog and Polar Bear - Nami Nishikawa
Artist's Tumblr
Pinterest board of nominator's favourites

Dancing Dolphins (Google image search)
Hunter (Lisa Frank)
Hunter (Google image search)
Playtime Kittens (Lisa Frank) (Google image search)
Rainbow Chaser (Lisa Frank)
Rainbow Chaser (Google image search)

These all seem to be recurrent characters in Lisa Frank's art, so I've linked fact sheets for the three that seemed to have them, and otherwise just general image searches where you can find the nominated characters in a number of different pieces. Frank's Facebook also has many images.

Night Sun Tarot Deck
Knight of Wands (Night Sun Tarot)

Space Cats - Bronwyn Schuster
Orange Tabby Space Cat (I think this is the right one - I'd have said this one was the orange tabby and Space Cat I is brown.)

Dixit is really gorgeous and has so many possibilities for worldbuilding. There's not really a plot to speak of. The different expansions have slightly different overall feelings to them for me, but that might be subjective.

I think it's worth noting that if you like the idea of Dixit and the art on the cards, but want something with a plot to give more structure, Mysterium (board game) is sort of like Dixit with a murder mystery and psychics communicating with a ghost using similar cards.

The original nominator pimped the fandom here, but they are no longer requesting it.

I'm now requesting! I just love surrealism, and these cards have a lot of that. I'm very open when it comes to fic for this. I'd take fic that is tied to the gameplay or fic that is just focused on the art (so you don't have to know or own the game itself, you can just look at pictures online). I'd also enjoy a fusion between the strange world of Dixit cards and any of my other requests.

See my letter for more info.

Thank you for this compilation, quillori :D

Chiming in for some namespace pimping (I'm pretty sure I'm the anon mentioned above, haha) -- this deck is a gorgeous, gorgeous collection of art. In addition to the specific nominated cards linked above, you can browse the entire deck here:

http://www.shadowscapes.com/Tarot/cardsmain.php?suit=0

Tarot fic's a lot of fun because you can draw from the entire deck for your worldbuilding, look into traditional meanings/symbolism for characterization, or just focus entire on the specific images. The artist's website linked above has accompanying text for each image - for example, the Nine of Swords is Suffering from anguish, fear, anxiety, guilt, uncertainties in the night. (hello, woobie fic ;D)

I'm in it for the slash, but the Queen of Swords and Page of Swords cards both star female characters, so you could mix things up with femslash or het prompts too :)

Basically, consider this deck for Yuletide if you're into:

Beautiful watercolors
Winged people
Birds and foxes and other creatures
Masks
Hierarchies
Occult dreamscapes
Tattoos
Flower symbolism
Elaborate costumes
Decidedly less elaborate costumes

I believe "Something I Must Do (Woot T-Shirt)" would count as artwork. It can be seen here: https://shirt.woot.com/offers/something-i-must-do

You are very welcome! Thank you for doing this -- I'm putting together the songs/albums/music vids post, and recalling just how much work it is!

Another one -- listed in Books & Literature and not a piece or artist I'm familiar with, so I'm glad it got mentioned in the signup post comments!

Please delete this comment if it messes with your order or is otherwise out of place. I was wondering if you'd like me to add one or more tags to the community that would be useful for this post or similar ones?

Sure. I'm drawing a bit of a blank on labels - do you have any ideas? 'art fandoms' maybe? I'm trying to think of something that would denote 'here is a collection of fandoms that appeal to a specific interest', but, you know, shorter.

fandom type: art sounds perfectly practical, actually, especially since we can then add fandom type: pretty much anything else that people might want to group. I'll start with that. Thanks.

How are you thinking of organising the tags?

I'll... get back to you on that.

Although I love when art just does a really good job of portraying a scene, the artworks that stick with me the strongest are the ones that bypass that and go straight to communicating on an emotional level. That's very much an individual reaction, so who knows if others will feel the same way...but for me, "Something I Must Do" makes me feel so hopeful and excited and worried for these two fish! They're both so brave: the one explorer fish, going off to face the unknown in an environment that it can't naturally survive in; and the other (lover? assistant? co-worker?) staying behind to continue their work.

This work seriously grabbed me as soon as I saw it...I think I went from "casually looking for one more t-shirt to fill out my order" to "not only buying this shirt but leapfrogging it to the top of my list of possible Yuletide noms" in less than an hour. :-)

Basically what I was thinking when I nominated this was, "Five minutes before the lesbian orgy."

But they could be looking at science textbooks, they could be laughing at things Proper Young Ladies were not supposed to find funny, they could be researching for their slash fics. It's the cheerful, collegial attitude toward getting past society's limits on what they're supposed to be accessing that's the draw, and that feels very relevant to fandom - the two girls leaning against each other and reading, the smirking girl in the back (with the key to the book cupboards, maybe? It's hard to see. Or maybe she's going to go tell on them.), the girl on the ladder who's looking worriedly over her shoulder but isn't going to let that stop her.

And of course there's also their potential future suitors referred to in the quote from a critic in the linked tumblr post, who may get something of a surprise on the wedding night...

One of the things that hit me with this painting the first time I saw it was the understated creepy nature. What is this world? Why is the tentacle creature hiding under the table? What is the POV person writing about?
