Post-Reveal Writing Post

(Happy new year!)

We couldn't talk about what we were writing for over 2 months this time - so let's talk about it now. If you've made a post describing your writing process for Yuletide 2016, link it here - or just make a comment if you'd rather.

Also on LJ.

I WROTE 10,000 WORDS IN EIGHT DAYS

HOW DID I DO THAT

(And how can I do it on my original fiction projects?)

Picking up pinch hits was huge fun for me this year. The short deadline is much easier for me than the long one, weirdly, and being able to pick specific requests was really nice. For my second pinch hit I ended up writing a story I'd wanted to write anyway but hadn't had the motivation for, so that felt really good.

I really loved working with all the beta readers I found through Yulechat and the spreadsheet, and they made some excellent comments. I don't have that kind of writing community for my original fiction and maybe I should look for some. Having such thoughtful people looking over my work meant I was much more confident that my recipients would like it.

My stories:

"The Odds" - Ghostbusters 2016/Ghostbusters 1984/Bone Street Rumba

"Two for Tea" - Questionable Content

EDIT: I wrote a writing process post; thanks for the idea.

Apparently, writing the third-longest story in the collection means writing three reveal posts:

http://minim-calibre.dreamwidth.org/816294.html (general first impressions on assignment)
http://minim-calibre.dreamwidth.org/816384.html (the treat)
http://minim-calibre.dreamwidth.org/816831.html (the main assignment)

I talk about my two stories here:

http://therck.livejournal.com/1015140.html
https://the-rck.dreamwidth.org/748275.html

I wrote The Wisdom That You Brought (Chronicles of Amber - Roger Zelazny) and More Dreadful to the Strong (Sleeping Beauty (1959)). The latter story contains non-con, and I talk about that. I cut that section, but going to either link will bypass the cut. The stuff about the Amber story is first and ends with a link to the story.

I wrote in Ghostbusters (2016), Monument Valley, Stardew Valley, Kamen Rider W/Kamen Rider Kiva, Gladiator - Dami Im, Fatal Frame III: The Tormented, Nancy Drew (video game), Fantasy Life (video game), and Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger.

My thoughts here.

This was my first Yuletide, and my first exchange writing outside of my usual fandom (Jeeves & Wooster), so the writing process was a little different from what I'm used to!

My assignment fic was "Something Normal" (Zootopia 2016, for Rampant_ID). The prompt was relationship-focused (Judy and Nick's family/friends try to set them up with members of their own species, they end up confessing their interest in each other).

I decided very early on that the story needed to be built around a case, but I had a couple false starts before I figured out how to weave the case and the family stuff together. At first, I wanted to have the whole thing take place at Judy's parents' place, with Nick there as well for added awkwardness, and give Judy some kind of eureka moment related to the case during dinner. But it just wasn't working out.

So eventually I scrapped that and hit on the idea of having the gruesome case stuff happening parallel to the homey/mundane family dinner stuff, and cutting back and forth between the two settings. I've never done a fic that way before, but I found the result a lot more interesting and satisfying than what I originally had in mind.

I also wrote a treat, "Jeeves and the Christmas Socks" (Jeeves and Wooster, for Jibrailis). I don't have much to say about the process there, since it's a fandom I'm very comfortable writing for. I think I started with the basic idea of "Bertie sees Jeeves wearing something un-Jeevesy and gives him crap about it," and it just kind of grew from there.

I wrote in both Oz series by L. Frank Baum and Darkwing Duck for Yuletide and Yuletide. I talk about the process here on DW and here on LJ.

As always I had a ton of fun and wished I had time to write lots more treats, but that's what NYR stories are for! Thanks to all the mods and participants who make this an absolute delight every year!

This is my second year doing Yuletide, and I have yet to figure out the etiquette, the chat, the beta process, or even the pinch hit, although I think I'm on the verge of figuring out the madness thing. At any rate, I only wrote one story, for my recipient, coyotegestalt. The hardest part for me was to find enough space in the canonical text (Heyer - The Quiet Gentleman) to insert slash. Plus I had to research the tail end of the Peninsular campaign; every one writes about the naval campaign and the sieges of Badajoz and even Bayonne, but I needed the very, very end. Anyway - more natterings about my travails here: http://aukestrel.dreamwidth.org/393083.html

I also left a comment on my own assignment to share my writing soundtrack.

I picked up a Pokemon Go pinch hit. I did not do it justice, because I thought it was a five times fic about Spark in Pokemon Go memes, and then I thought it was about how the team leaders met (it was), but couldn't quite get enough into one scene, so it's like "almost a brief slice of life plus two epilogues because maybe still a five things fic?"

If I had more energy I would remix it and do it better, but I do think at least I got some good characterization and worldbuilding stuff done.

I wrote a crossover between Stephen King's Firestarter and Daryl Gregory's We Are All Completely Fine (after getting the mods to check this would be okay with the recipient!). Process post is here

I wrote for The Charioteer (Mary Renault), Venetia (Georgette Heyer), Forever, and Forever Knight.

My reveals post has a fair bit about the writing process.
