I figured out I only had 3 possible fandoms to be matched on, at most, & I got the fandom I was most hoping to get. \o/
Unfortunately there is a LOT of canon. Which maybe explains why more people didn't offer it. /o\ Oh well, I've got work to do! & already some ideas, which will help narrow down how much of canon I actually need to re-absorb.
I'm actually thinking of writing my recipient two fics, because they have two prompts that really intrigue me. :D I was a little surprised at my assignment when I got it, but then I read the letter and was all oh, this is going to rock. They asked for something I reallyreally wanna write.
There is actually a very high probability that I will be writing for a fandom which 1) I didn't offer for 2) was requested by my assignment 3) I know extremely well.
I already have plot bunnies wandering about in my mind. :D
Pretty good - particularly considering that I gave up with the sign-up form, and just offered 'any' on seven or eight different fandoms - I shudder to think what bullets I might have dodged there! I've got a prompt I can write. Will have to re-read at least three books, though - OH THE HARDSHIP.
Haha, no. Though with me, it's more, 'I know I could write Alice. Or I could write Benjamin. Or Chloe, or Dan. But what if they want me to write Alice/Dan, with fruit salad play? I hate bananas!' And so forth.
I am super excited about my assignment, and ever more excited that my recipient's dear author letter says that she loves exactly the kind of fic I'm best at writing.
I'm slightly disquieted by how open my prompt is - just a fandom and one character, and no "Dear Yule Goat" or personal Delicious to help me figure out my recipient's personal narrative kinks.
Oh well! Guess I'll just have to write whatever the hell I feel like. OH THE HORROR, HOWEVER SHALL I COPE.
Well, it could also be considered generously open ended. Perhaps it was made in the same spirit that leads people to offer things like 'Lord of the Rings - Character: Any'?
Oh, I totally did. I was just revisiting that thread in another window because I kind of can't look away. It's not even just that the person hates their prompt so much, it's that they only want to write one thing in one particular way which is just...not Yuletide.
Yeah, &... I'm not really sure how they signed up for YT under the assumptions that they seem to have made about what it was going to be like.
I mean, this is my first year, & part of the reason I was hesitating was because I didn't know if I had enough fandoms that I would feel comfortable writing (at the end of the day, out of 9 I offered, only 4 got requested as it was!). I had to do a lot of mental calculating to figure out if I could be as flexible as I needed to be!
The necessary flexibility really can be rough, but it's so ultimately rewarding! I've written things for Yuletide that I never would have believed I was capable of. Every year, I learn more about my abilities as a writer which is part of what makes it so awesome.
Very excited here! I told the Yule-gods that I would offer fandoms outside my usual comfort range, did so, and was rewarded with an assignment well within said comfort range.
For the second year in a row I have a recipient with no 'Dear Yule Goat' letter, so I'm winging it! Should be alright, the prompt is almost exactly one I've requested before. :D
I'm actually shocked, not by the fandom, but by the character request--it's one I've offered for years and was sure no one but me was interested in. Now I just have to make it work--whee!
Mine rocks! I matched on two fandoms, both of which I'd love to do. I may do both. There's the one I really want to write for, and there's the other one where her (assuming it's a 'her' here) 'optional details' made me go, "OOOOHHH! I know what to do with THAT!"
I wasn't sure about mine at first (my fault for offering "any"), but now I think I'm thrilled. I'm going to get to write something really pretty, in one of my very first fandoms.
My recipient wants a rather specific story which is great! I have enough latitude for my own creativity without it being so open that I have to figure out what to write. \o/

I am super excited about mine! My recipient wants a story I would never have thought to tell without being prompted for it, but that has themes I really love in general. I have a few hundred words of just *notes* planning it out, and a start on one of the scenes already. \o/
I'm going a bit "oh noes" because there's no letter outside of brief optional details, no journal, no fics on AO3... I really hope I don't stumble over a squick by accident. *worries* It's very open-ended, which is good, and I've got a good start on something, but I really, really hope I don't include something the recepient forgot to mention ze hates.
I feel your pain. I'm in a similar boat and am left going 'but...but...how can I stalk you and write you a perfect fic if I cant look through your entire fic history!' It's oddly frustrating.
Oh, man, this. In previous years, I've had a Dear Yuletide Author letter, an open LJ to stalk, fics to read… this year, nothing but a teeny-tiny prompt that boils down to, "I like everything, yay!" and attempts at plugging their name into LJ gave me a community in Russian that's decked out in pictures of Viagra. o_O
My first reaction was something like, "ooh, *joys* I've always wanted to fic this fandom and never quite got around to it."
Then it was more like, "...uh, *scratches head* didn't I own [source material] at one point? Why can't I find it? *search* ... *search elsewhere* ... *search again because I tend to be chronically blind to whatever it is I'm looking for* ... ... *whimper* ... *phone all old roommates* ... *pray* ... ... *phone parental units* ... ... ... *FLAIL!PANIC!FLAIL!FLAIL!FLAIL!* ... ... ... ... *check the All-Knowing Internets* ... *relieved!sigh* ... *THUD*
And that was my day after assignments went out:-)
In other news, this year's Yuletide Squee is courtesy of Netflix.
I was freaking out a bit, but I've started writing it now since I finished reviewing the source and I'm feeling more comfortable. We'll see how long that lasts. ^_^

I'll be over here, quietly banging my head against the wall in the hopes that it will dislodge some kind of idea or plan.

(Not to dismiss your head-banging, though!)
