MultiLingYule 2024
The MultiLingYule mini-challenge is for works in languages other than English.
Maybe there are very few fanworks in your first, second, etc language, and you'd love to connect with a fellow speaker who's also a fellow fan.
Maybe you're learning a new language and getting a gift in it would be a delightful way to improve your fluency.
Maybe you just want to talk about how much you love conlangs and invite someone to incorporate conlangs into your gift.
The possibilities are multi-ple!
On the creation side: unless someone has clearly indicated that a non-English work would suit as their only gift, gifts of that kind need be posted in Yuletide Madness, regardless of length. Works can only go in the main collection if they fulfil all the same requirements as an assigned gift.
Similarly, someone may be delighted to get a gift in a language you've just started to learn, and connect with you over enthusiasm for that language, but if you're posting a gift in the Main rather than the Madness collection, it should probably either be in a language you're fluent in or in a language you can call on fluent help for.
On the (tangential) beta side, people who can check text snippets, lines of dialogue, etc, in multiple languages are extremely valuable and appreciated, and if you can offer this service, please consider doing so when the beta post goes up.

MultiLingYule is an opt-in challenge similar to Crueltide and Interactive Fiction. Comment here to let people know
-if you are interested in receiving gifts in languages other than English
-what languages those are
-what you're prompting (link your letter; if you don't have a letter, you can link your prompts on the app after requests are revealed)
-any other useful notes.
With a Mod Hat On
On the requesting side: if you would be happy if a gift in a different language were your only gift, please also note this in the optional details of your sign-up form. This prevents mod panic when we go to check assignments and need to figure out if someone can actually read their gift!On the creation side: unless someone has clearly indicated that a non-English work would suit as their only gift, gifts of that kind need be posted in Yuletide Madness, regardless of length. I love languages in general (I have taken courses in the languages above, as well as Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, German, and Irish Gaelic) and would be happy to see dialogue in other languages (even ones I haven't learned) sprinkled into an otherwise English fic. I also like to see characters geek out about languages.
My Yuletide letter is at https://estirose.dreamwidth.org/2024/10/07/dyw2024.html and my fandoms are Cozy Grove, Coral Island, I Want To Be a Wall, and Starman (TV).

I love languages in general - and especially the ones I'm learning or know some phrases of here and there. So dialogue in different languages (my first language is German and, besides English, I also know some French, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and Hindi) will always be more than appreciated.
Full stories in any language other than English or German (and, to a certain degree, French) probably lose a lot of (too much) nuance on me, though.

Danish (fluent)
Swedish (can read fluently)
Norwegian (can read fluently)
Icelandic (fluent)
Finnish (can read)
My Finnish isn't quite as strong as the the other four Nordic languages. I have a BA and MA in Finnish + I've lived in Finland combined 2 years - I can speak it, but mainly on a conversational* level. My reading level is much better - back in 2016/2017 when I last lived there I made it through the first four Harry Potter books in Finnish + a smattering of other books and short story collections I've now forgotten, but I admit I haven't read much in Finnish since that isn't a news article or facebook updates from Finnish friends. so I'm a bit rusty, but I will muddle through!
*my conversational Finnish is very Turun murre as this is the area I've spent most time in.
wrt Swedish and Norwegian, I'm OK with the full range of regional dialects, including finlandssvenska and the tornedal dialect (this includes meänkieli and/or vocab from meänkieli), even the ones you think I might not get. I've yet to meet a dialect of these I've not gotten along with**. I've not spent much time with nynorsk but I'll probably be fine if you choose this over bokmål/your regional dialect.
**älvdalska is probably the one exception but I'm also going to call this a language of its own and not a dialect.
wrt Danish, listen, I've spent 20 years in Denmark, and ostensibly that means I should understand every regional dialect, but if you write something in the following dialects:
sønderjysk
vendelbomål
thybomål
bornholmsk
all bets are off. I would be DELIGHTED, don't get me wrong, I would love for there to be fiction in these marginalised dialects, but my only encounter with these variants are from one singular linguistics lesson during undergrad and from listening to one of my linguist buddies rave about them, so I can't promise I'll understand much.
My requests are:
Afdeling Q | Department Q (Movies)
Astreiant series by Melissa Scott & Lisa A. Barnett
Dancing Queens (2021)
Ocean's 8 (2018)
Ocean's Eleven Trilogy (Movies)
Shetland (TV)
Of these, Afdeling Q is Danish, and Dancing Queens is Swedish.

Hi! I'm a fluent speaker of Spanish and French and an intermediate Mandarin learner, and I would be happy to receive either treats or a main gift in any of these languages! Though I would only want to receive it as a main gift if you are fluent in the language (C1-C2 level). Leaving my letter info below :)

I'd love to receive treats or a main gift in Czech, German or Italian.
It would be so cool to find fellow Czech fan/s. I've just dived directly into English fandoms and fanfic places so I haven't met many Czech fans.
German is my first foreign language, I use it all the time and really like the language (especially its structure, word-building possibilities and looooong attributes).
And about Italian ... I'm still learning so some complicated deep thoughts or wordplays could be a bit tricky for me to understand but I'll do my best! I love everything Italian.
Requested fandoms: Murdoch Mysteries, Pole Vault RPF, Radio Silence - Alice Oseman, SEAL Team (TV), Team Champéry RPF, They Came to Baghdad - Agatha Christie

German is my second language, but I speak & read fluently. Yiddish is the language of my ancestors, rather than anything I speak natively, and I've only studied it formally a little bit (one college semester + some Duolingo). But between knowing the Yiddish alphabet and having my German vocabulary to lean on, I can decipher written Yiddish pretty well if given enough time. Similarly, Icelandic I've only learned to an A2 level, but between drawing on my German and copious use of dictionaries, I can figure out quite a bit.
My requested fandoms are the Graceling Realm series by Kristin Cashore, the Seraphina series by Rachel Hartman, Call Me By Your Name (2017), John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme, and the All-of-a-Kind-Family series by Sydney Taylor. My letter is: https://starfishstar.dreamwidth.org/126854.html

I would appreciate a gift in Italian (my mother tongue), French (I'm fluent in it), Spanish (I stubbornly pretend to know the language and read on lol), or Russian (currently learning this one, I have a medium-high level but I'm not quite fluent yet, so please nothing too long).
What I enjoy when reading in those languages is how they all have formal pronouns ( while English lacks them).
And these are my requested fandoms:

Feel free to include dialogue in thai if you want, tho I would appreciate it in transliterated form better

All of my canons this Yuletide are originally in French - I'm currently learning French and while my level is not advanced, feel free to gift me fic that is fully or partially in French! Just know that I might have to rely on a translator to read some parts and I might miss some nuance/stylistic choices.

I would love a treat in Spanish! I'm trying to get better at my Spanish, and this seems like a fun way to practice. I'm at about a B2 level, I'd say.
I also requested ancient history RPF fics, so if you wanted to do something weird and experimental and go all out writing in Linear B Mycenaean Greek or Akkadian - or just incorporate it in some way - I think that would also be really fun. I also just love linguistics in general, so anything conlang-related would be cool and neat.
My letter is here: https://www.pillowfort.social/posts/5463171
The canons I requested:
Mycenaean History RPF
Mesopotamian RPF
Akkadian Empire RPF
Sam Jones - Leslie Fish (Song)
The Jewels of Aptor - Samuel Delany (short novel)
The Pasithea Powder (podcast) (as it's a very Latino-focused space world, a Spanish-language fic would be particularly fun...)
