Yuletide Fandom Promo 2024!

Welcome to the Fandom Promo post, everyone!

Here's where you get those eyes on your fandoms for sign-ups!

Share what makes your Yuletide fandoms the shiniest and why you love them. A big part of Yuletide is how small our fandoms can be, and this is a good way to make sure other people know what gems there are out there!

Cheju has started a spreadsheet for promo! Here's the link!

Here are some areas you can cover:

Please put your fandom's title in the subject of your comment, too. This helps people find your promo again.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
This is at your discretion and is not expected to be comprehensive

(Bonus options: What are you thinking of requesting for this? If you're thinking of nominating worldbuilding, what sort of worldbuilding topics might people explore?)

Useful tip (Not required, but helps people if they want to engage with your fandom!):

- It's best to make each fandom its own entry with its own title in the subject line! That makes it easier for people to find/see what you're promoting! Don't worry about 'spam', that is the entire point of this entry and you're using it exactly as intended.

Indigo Saga - Louise Cooper

Title: Indigo Saga - Louise Cooper

Media: 1980s-1990s Fantasy novel series

Approx length: 7 books (reasonably short!)

Where to find it: They're OOP but Google Louise Cooper and Internet Archive & most of them have been uploaded there, and they're still fairly easy to buy 2nd hand online in hardcopy, last time I tried.

What is it, in summary?: It's a take on Pandora's Box, set in a world that seems to be an alternate or future version of this one, after a catastrophe and geomagnetic reversal at the hands of the Earth Mother. (Turning the map upside down and trying to work out where all the settings equate to is fun and it results in some interesting things, like an epic snowy AU Australia in Book 5. There's clearly been some continental/land movement in the process, though, but there is as a result often a real world link to the kind of culture/demon/story in each setting, although even now I'm not sure on all of them.)

Anghara Kaligsdaughter, princess of the Southern Isles releases 7 demons from the Tower of Regrets, and after they destroy all her family and friends, is doomed to walk the world unaging until she has defeated each of the demons & freed her fiance Fenran from their hands. She's accompanied by Grimya, a mutant telepathic wolf who befriends her & opposed by her alter ego Nemesis (but a lot is not what it appears. Not Grimya, though: Grimya is always and absolutely the very best and most faithful friend. ♥). There's a lot of interesting growth and change as it progresses.

Each book is set in a different location, defeating a different kind of demon, with the aid (or otherwise) of a different set of characters that Indigo & Grimya meet, with Books 1 & 8 both set in Indigo's homeland, starting and completing the story.

What do you love about it?: Indigo & Grimya's enduring friendship, that it's endgame, the world and all the different settings and characters we meet, and that it's something a bit different among fantasy books still. I think there's so much potential for playing with it for fic - and I know the author herself would have liked to return to it, but she died comparatively young and never did. I read quite a few of hers (she also wrote The Time Master series, which is her most famous series) but this remains far and away my favourite.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: I'll be looking for Indigo & Grimya fic generally - whatever! Maybe missing scenes/stories, or what Indigo & Grimya did post-canon. There's a suggestion they might help others to fight their demons, or maybe they will risk revisiting some old friends once or twice?

(I also nominated Nemesis and Fenran, as they also have important and interesting relationships with Indigo.)

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Yes! The books are individually not long (usually c.200-350pp, pretty decent-sized print in my editions), but because of the episode quest/new setting per book, you could read any of the middle installments alone - I'd especially recommend Nocturne or Troika if you wanted to. Book #1 (Nemesis) is obviously good to read as well. It's the shortest, but not especially typical as it is essentially quite a lot of set up to the quest that starts with Inferno.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): 1980s/90s but mostly aged well, although there's underage marriage (in context of a ruling alliance) in Book #3, dips into horror re. the demons & their effects, and Book 6 Avatar has a fantasy smushed up West Indies/West Africa.
