The Passing Days: Saiyuki Gaiden slice of life, anyone? Pitch-perfect character notes as the trio try to drag Konzen away from his desk. And, while we're on the slice-of-life theme, Black Jewels fandom has Testing Limits, in which Saetan has to sit on Lucivar and Daemon while Jaenelle is away.
Pretty much everything in Project Hail Mary was excellent; I particularly liked Across the Universe for its incredible character voices and choices for 5 Things and Rocky Days for some Rocky & Ryland awws.
Light-hearted romance shivvied along by clockwork octopus awaits in the Watchmaker of Filigree St. work Neither Full Credit Nor Blame.
The Culture's Falling Outside the Normal Social Conventions is a Lededje + FOTNMC friendship fic full of found family goodness and hilarious FOTNMC antics. Also funny and a little antic-y is the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute RPF fic Nest-wrecker*, in which Chris, a conservationist married for better or for worse to a white-naped crane (hee hee hee) is consulted by the narrator, who just wants to get a grant written. While we're on hilarious nature-y things, the Gardeners' World/JS&MR fic Thistledown is POINT ON for Gardeners' World voices (I, alas, can't speak to JS&MN). Everyone should have a Carol in their lives/fics. As for crossovers, I received an excellent Left Hand of Darkness/Star Trek one: oh come on you know you want to know what happens if Estraven joins Starfleet, right?
Tale of Heike had two whole fics this year (!!!): my gift Visitations, in which best boy Shigemori goes through the wheel of life, and then Five Omens Taira no Shigemori Never Told Anyone About, and One He Never Saw , in which Shigemori encounters yet more omens.
Leaping off Japanese supernatural into Chinese supernatural, Tang Dynasty Poetry produced the most excellent Paper Beats Duke*, for which you only need to read a short poem ("A Poem Thrown At Martial Duke Pei").
Meanwhile, if you like yourself some competence porn and porn and Ancient Egyptian Religion, take yourself to A Poly for All Seasons, in which Imhotep and the gods bang to the tune of public works.
Those who like a little bit of hurt even in the super-comfort of Wayne Family Adventures and Dick getting his due attention from Jason and Bruce probably will enjoy the heart-wrenching/healing right through my walls.
Finally, everyone should make some time for the 12K Red Cliff/Chi Bi fic 高山流水 | High Mountains and Flowing Water , which is just a glorious Zhuge Liang/Zhou Yu piece full of great characterisation, Meaningful Music And Metaphors, and as good as you can get interactions for the canon.
