Short Stories in the 2022 Tagset

A compilation post for poems and short stories, available in either written or audio form, in the tagset with links on where to find them if possible.

Please comment with ones I've missed or if a different translation or version of a canon is preferred. Generally speaking, I've gone with writer's digest definition of a short story being under 30k words.

There's also "mulberry down!!" by Nicole Kornher-Stace (which they refer to as a short story, though it has also been called a novella. somewhere in the middle.) available for free here: http://nicolekornherstace.com/mulberry-down/

DYING WITH HER CHEER PANTS ON - Seanan McGuire is a short story anthology if that helps! Only one story really has to be read for all but one of the characters nominated - "Tryouts" which sets the scene for the "current" squad and most of how the worldbuilding works! :D

Totally makes sense. I just thought I'd mention it if people were looking for short story type items :)

And man thanks for the round up tho - I just added like... 3 things to my possible offer list!

Is "under 300 pages" the criterion you're working with? If so, James White's Sector General series probably qualifies here, too. All the stories are novella length or shorter, even the ones in individual volumes of their own.

I must have missed that when I read it, but I appreciate your clarification. The short stories certainly fall under that, but whether the novellas do, is harder to determine, since they aren't available in ebook so far as I can tell. The print is small, too, so the usual idea of 500 words per page may not apply. If I determine the answer one way or the other, I'll let you know.

Thank you for compiling this super handy list!

Nominated Le Horla | The Horla is a (horror) short story by Guy de Maupassant. The full French text can be read here, an English translation can be read here, and for anyone inclined: Peter Lorre told the tale in 1947 for a NBC radio show, you can listen to it here. :D

This is a great list! Nervous System - Rosalie Moffett is poetry. (It's a collection of poetry that weaves various topics together into a single narrative, though I have seen at least one review that considered it to be a single book-length poem. It's maybe ~10k so well under your word count cutoff if that applies to poetry.)

I don't believe it's available online, just in book form. The Amazon listing has a preview of the first 6 poems.

I somehow forgot to mention it, but there's also Tamsyn Muir's novelette The Deepwater Bride, 8453 words in length - that one is available in the July/August 2015 edition of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, which can be downloaded and read for free by any Kindle Unlimited subscriber (£7.99/month for up to 20 borrowed books at a time, with swaps that can be made at any point, and no fixed subscription).

Thank you.

For more ways to find the work, it's also available in The Long List Anthology Vol. 2, which is available less expensively than the original work or a KU sub, for £3.79, and has been reprinted in The Year’s Best Dark Fantasy & Horror: 2016, The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year: Volume 10, The Year’s Best Science Fiction and Fantasy 2016, and Heiresses of Russ 2016: The Year’s Best Lesbian Speculative Fiction.
