2022 Yuletide Promo Post

Welcome to the Fandom Promo post, everyone!

Here's where you get those eyes on your fandoms for sign-ups!

Share what makes your Yuletide fandoms the shiniest and why you love them. A big part of Yuletide is how small our fandoms can be, and this is a good way to make sure other people know what gems there are out there!

NEW: We've made a register! There is now a searchable Google spreadsheet index of the canons promoted on this post. Go ahead and add yours or any you see that are missing! We hope this helps connect people up with canons of interest to them.

Here are some areas you can cover:

<b>Title:</b>
Please put your fandom's title in the subject of your comment, too. This helps people find your promo again.

<b>Media:</b>

<b>Approx length:</b>

<b>What do you love about it?:</b>

<b>What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:</b>

<b>Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?:</b>

This is at your discretion and is not expected to be comprehensive

(Bonus options: What are you thinking of requesting for this? If you're thinking of nominating worldbuilding, what sort of worldbuilding topics might people explore?)

Useful tip (Not required, but helps people if they want to engage with your fandom!):

- It's best to make each fandom its own entry with its own title in the subject line! That makes it easier for people to find/see what you're promoting! Don't worry about 'spam', that is the entire point of this entry and you're using it exactly as intended.

Title:Da uomo a uomo | Death Rides a Horse

Media:Movie

Approx length:About 2 hours

Where to find it:Wherever you find old movies, but most conveniently, it's free on youtube. I watched it here.

What is it, in summary?:A spaghetti western with my current favorite actor, Lee Van Cleef. Listen, it's not a good movie, but it's a very enjoyable classic revenge movie.
Summary: Bill is about 5 when he sees his family murdered by a gang of outlaws who then leave him in the burning house to die, but one returns and pulls him out of the fire, saving his life. 15 years later, he's a grown man obsessed with revenge, and teams up with a mysterious gunslinger, Ryan, who's spent the last 15 years in jail (after his ex-friends betrayed him.) You can probably guess who Ryan is, but if not here are !spoilers!: Ryan is the man who saved Bill 15 years ago, and he knows who Bill is, but Bill doesn't figure out who Ryan is until the end of the movie, after they've teamed up against their common enemies and gotten close. Bill, uh, does not handle the reveal well! Drama!

What do you love about it?:Revenge! Anger! Identity porn! Whump! Intense relationship that could be read as either found family or homoerotic (the movie itself can't make up its dang mind and gives you ample fuel for both) but regardless of how you interpret it, it makes me insane! Okay, because I don't know a better way to explain my excitement than describing the ending:
!spoilers!
Bill realizes who Ryan is when he sees him shaving shirtless and recognizes the necklace he's been wearing under his clothes, which he was wearing the night of the murders. Bill freaks out and pulls a gun on him. Ryan has this mini monologue:
"If it means anything to you, when I saw what was happening, I was too late to stop it. All I could do was save a child, and now that child is going to kill me. Alright. I've been waiting for that. But let me do something first, let me help you now. There's too many of them out there for just you alone. When it's over... I won't run away."
This is followed by simply a very bad action scene. A climactic shootout should not be boring but this one manages. However, when Ryan and Bill are the last ones standing, they square off for a duel. Ryan is out of bullets so Bill gives him one, leaving just one for himself as well. Ryan then turns and starts to walk away. After about ten paces Bill, evidently ready to shoot, shouts for him to turn around and defend himself. Ryan doesn't turn. Eventually Bill fires, and Ryan freezes, then looks around in confusion when he realizes he hasn't been shot. It turns out Bill was shooting the last surviving outlaw. Bill, having spent his last bullet, starts to walk away. Ryan offers him the bullet which he never loaded into his gun. He offers him back his bullet! He tries to give him a bullet to shoot him with! He never even loaded his gun he never had any intention of hurting Bill! I'm insane! He offers Bill a bullet to shoot him with??? I am losing it. The vibes... Anyways Bill doesn't take the bullet and rides off into the sunset alone (much of the fanfic that exists for this fandom so far involves Bill, post-canon, working through his feelings and deciding to go back and look for Ryan.)
Anyways, if nothing else watch this for Lee Van Cleef showing his Lee Van Cleavage while he shoots bad guys. Gunslinger DILF hours. Observe: this post. And also the rest of my Death Rides a Horse tag.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:There are around ten fics (several by me) and I have read all of them (mcicioni I love you and owe you my life for establishing the fanon of postcanon Bill/Ryan, those fics are so good), I'd just really love any new content. Bill/Ryan, Bill & Ryan, or either of them individually. I'd love character studies that get into how messed up they both are (you know both of these men have severe PTSD that presents in different ways.) It's Ryan I'm most obsessed with at the moment but I like both of them. I'll post a letter with more (much more) unhinged ranting eventually (can we talk about Ryan's Plot-Relevant Skull Necklace??)

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?:It's hard to section off parts of a movie but there are definitely scenes I care more about and scenes I skip on rewatches. The one action scene mentioned above is mostly skip-able for example. If you feel it's not important you might be right.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):Rape, violence, some white savior-y stuff.

Amadeus (1984)

(Anonymous) 2022-09-16 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Title: Amadeus (1984)

Media: Film

Approx length: 2h

Where to find it: It should be available on Netflix

What is it, in summary?:
So, it’s a film based on Peter Shaffer‘s play of the same name, which tells of Salieri and Mozart rivarly - or, rather, Salieri’s obsession with Mozart which is caught between love for the art and envy of the man.

What do you love about it?: First of all, the acting is amazing. Specially F. Murray Abraham as Salieri and the way he perfectly conveys how chaotic Salieri’s emotions are when it comes to Mozart and his art. Also, Tom Hulce’s Wolfie is wonderful, hysterical and delightfully unaware of the effect he has on Salieri, while still being haunted by his own demons (aka, his very stern Papa).
I really love how the film plays their dynamic, and how Salieri’s one-sided obsession is shown as having elements of both love and hatred to it. The actual scenes the two interact are charged because we knows what is going on with Salieri and how deeply he envies the “gift” Mozart has (which in his mind was given by God), while on the outside he acts all assured and friendly… which is kinda how Mozart ends up believing that he is. Salieri claims to hate Mozard but is, in fact, his most ardent admirer.
If you like fictionalised history films with a penchant for inner conflicted characters and love/hate dynamics… give it a chance!

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Fanfics, shippy and non-shippy. I really would love some “missing scenes”! Heck, even canon-divergent AUs lol.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?:
There is a scene in which Salieri - for selfish reasons, mind you - helps a very sick Mozart to continue composing his Requiem. The link below is interesting because it shows the scene together with the musical notation so you can actually see, in musical terms, what they are discussing, and the quality of the scene is amazing:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dJ0AkP_BFhs

Also, there is the famous (and hilarious) “play Salieri” scene. You can see the effect Mozart’s hysterical laughter alone has on Salieri, lol! Also, Wolfie without wig which always cute!

The Sommerdahl Murders

[personal profile] lawsonblakestan 2022-09-16 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Title: The Sommerdahl Murders

Media: TV Show

Approx length: Three seasons, eight episodes per season

Where to find it: Acorn TV on amazon prime

What is it, in summary?: Two detectives who are best friends solve murders in a small seaside city in Denmark. One of them has been married for a long time and has a grown-up daughter. His marriage falls apart and his ex ends up in a relationship with his detective partner/best friend.

What do you love about it?: The characters have known each other for so long and their lives are all intertwined, which makes it even more difficult when Dan's marriage falls apart. I also love the sense of place, the scenery, the seaside community setting. The bad guys are varied between being good people in bad situations and bad people doing bad things.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Messy love triangle. Friendship.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: You could probably get the gist of it by watching only one season, but the episodes build upon each other so you really need to watch an entire season in order.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
Some murder and violence and drugs but I find it to be less confronting than many detective shows.

This show is so good! I hope you all watch it and fall in love with Flemming!

Legend of Yunze (2021)

[personal profile] redblonde7 2022-09-16 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Title: Legend of Yunze

Media: Live Action

Approx length: Season 1 12 eps (2-6 minutes each), Special Season 14 eps (2-5 minutes each), Season 2 15 eps (2-6 minutes each)

Where to find it: https://legendofyunze.carrd.co/ (links to Youtube for S1 & Special, dropbox links to S2)

What is it, in summary?: It's a Chinese xianxia with f/f romance as the main. There is Jiang ZhaoYun who meets a mysterious woman, A-Ze, and together they investigate various cases, while more of their past and backgrounds get revealed along the way. The Special is set in modern times after A-Ze died young and Jiang Zhaoyun waited for a thousand years to be reincarnated. The special could be seen as sort of AU after Season 1.

What do you love about it?: Apart from the xianxia with f/f romance and a focus on female cultivators? Jiang Zhaoyun is the kind of controlled expression-feels deeply kind of character I like and the mystery of A-Ze's past is really intriguing. Plus the cases they complete are interesting and varied and I like the side characters we get (Yan Qi is absolutely hilarious in the Special). Season 2 is particularly good for the angst around both of their backgrounds as they have to try and save the other.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Everything! Especially case fic, exploration of Jiang Zhaoyun and A-Ze's past (and how they overlap), exploring the world itself especially with the Spirits Jiang Zhaoyun is friends with. Jiang Zhaoyun and A-Ze travelling together. Post Season 2, how do Jiang Zhaoyun and A-Ze recover from everything?

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: In total, watching Season 1 and 2 would take you about an hour and that covers the main canon. The special is very much an add-on.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Death and gore on-screen.

A Voice From Darkness (podcast)

Title:A Voice From Darkness

Media: Podcast

Approx length: 25 regular episodes that range from 5 to 30 minutes, and 13 Patreon only eps (though some of them have had bits released on the free-to-listen feeds too). It's ongoing.

Where to find it:
https://vfdarkness.com/
On Spotify

What is it, in summary?: An audio drama posing as a radio show set in modern day, where Dr. Malcolm Ryder, a parapsychologist, talks about various supernatural creatures and phenomenon taking place all over the USA. He also takes calls from listeners who have some kind of paranormal problem that they have questions or need advice about.

What do you love about it?: First of all, the acting and sound design is SUPERB. The voice work by Kristin Holland is really incredible, and appropriately spooky. The eps aren't too long and usually carry a variety of content. The stories are creepy and have unique twists, so even ones that start out like something you've heard before quickly change into something much weirder. Shout out to the Sexually Transmitted Language for things that made me go "Whoa???" There's also an overarching plot that is only just getting real steam but I'm so fascinated.

The main dude is pretty slashy (imo) and there is what seems to be a canon f/f couple among the side characters.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Friends to enemies to lovers/hatesex (mlm). Supernatural casefic with weird magic. Cryptid hunting!

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Not really, Malcolm is the star of every ep and the B plot is woven through several different characters' stories, so the good news is there's very relevant info popping up often when you don't expect it!

Content warnings: It's a horror podcast at heart, but most of it is told second hand rather than in the moment. References to people disappearing, suicide, mutilation, murder, depression and regret, etc.

What is it, in summary?:
An actual-play podcast (where people play a TTRPG and edit it into something nice to listen to). There are two storylines, one set on the Star Wars universe, and one in an original sky-pirates setting largely inspired by the music of the Decemberists and the game Illimat.

What do you love about it?:
The humor! The engaging characters! The worldbuilding! The anti-colonial themes!

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
Smut!

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?:
Yes, there's the Star Wars content and there's also the Skyjacks content, which tell separate stories.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
Nothing too intense.

What is it, in summary?:
An actual-play podcast (where people play a TTRPG and edit it into something nice to listen to) about eldritch horror and secret organizations.

What do you love about it?:
Compelling characters, exciting action, complex stories, foreshadowing that actually pays off.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
No idea yet! Likely something dark, because it's a dark show.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?:
There are several seasons of the show, and some characters only feature in one season.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
Very gory at times. Some themes of sexual assault.

Murder! At The Circus: The Ballad of Amber de Lune

[personal profile] kittyeden 2022-09-16 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Title: Murder! At The Circus: The Ballad of Amber de Lune

Media: Theatre

Approx length: The show itself is just under two hours, and then there's another hour of various alternative footage of the songs/different takes on scenes from other performance nights.

Where to find it: The full playlist can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3u3fEUpqK0&list=PLK5JzkEBhY-im3gRCptsbshjVyA3Nnx5K

What is it, in summary?: A very silly pantomime about a mysterious murder at a 1933 circus, and the investigation into WHO KILLED THE STAR OF THE SHOW? Oh, also it’s packed chock-full of Panic! At The Disco musical numbers and references, as well as plenty of colorful characters and (of course) audience participation.

What do you love about it?: It’s really, really silly (the part in scene 8 where everyone's speculating on Whodunnit and accusing each other might be my Favorite Thing Ever), and everybody's clearly really full of love for what they're doing, even on a small budget. The musical numbers are bangers, the characters are great, and the self-aware plot and fourth-wall breaks are delightful. And plus, it’s a murder mystery! At the circus! What’s not to love?

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: This is one of those canons where I’d be delighted to get anything at all, whether it be pre-canon shenanigans from the theatre troupe, missing scenes, post-canon content. I have some favorite characters, like Mabel the chef, Rob the fortune-teller, and Gladys the knife-thrower – but there’s quite a lot of characters, so as long as the fic is goofy and fun I’m down for it. Also, I love the audience being a sort of amorphous peanut gallery of a bonus character, so that's definitely going to come into my request somehow.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: not really. The show’s pretty standalone.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): murder (obviously) and similarly dark topics, but everything’s treated very lightheartedly seeing as it is a pantomime. Also, heads-up that occasionally the recording spikes abruptly in volume when the audience gets loud, and at other times can be a little hard to make out.

Traveling Wilburys

(Anonymous) 2022-09-16 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Title: AO3 tag "The Travelling Wilburys (Band)" (https://archiveofourown.org/tags/The%20Travelling%20Wilburys%20(Band))

Media: Music, Websites (e.g. for text of the original album liner notes containing fictional biographical data and interviews with band members)

Approx length: n/a

Where to find it:
- The band's music on Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/artist/2hO4YtXUFJiUYS2uYFvHNK?si=r1MYVWMBQEmlpNi_7Ne84w)
- The history of the Traveling Wilburys (https://www.travelingwilburys.com/history)
- Who Were The Traveling Wilburys? The Billion Dollar Quintet (https://www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/the-billion-dollar-quintet)

What is it, in summary?: The band itself was a short-lived, but fun, collaboration between a few legendary rock n' roll musicians (George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty) who happened to be in the same place at the same time and recorded two albums together, but...

What do you love about it?: ...they also happened to be huge Monty Python fans, and Michael Palin even wrote a very Pythonesque fictional bio for their liner notes under a pseudonym.

"In the album credits, the "Wilburys" joke was extended further, with the band members listed under various pseudonyms and pretending to be half-brothers – sons of a fictional Charles Truscott Wilbury, Sr. During promotion for the album, Orbison played along with the mock history, saying: "Some people say Daddy was a cad and a bounder, but I remember him as a Baptist minister."

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Extrapolation on the fictional Wilbury family's history, Wilbury brother untold backstories, and exploits - especially if done in the spirit of Monty Python.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: You don't need to listen to their music to write for this, just know what brief tidbits have already been written about the fictional Wilburys, but of course their songs and the characterization of the Wilbury brothers based on what's known of the corresponding, individual musicians' personalities and actual biographies might be fun creative inspo as well.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): none

V: The Series (1984)

[personal profile] fullborn 2022-09-16 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Title: V: The Series

Media: Tv show.

Approx length: 19 episodes x 45 mins.

Where to find it: The entire series is up on archive.org here

What is it, in summary?:
The series is a continuation of V (2-part minseries, 1983) and its sequel V: The Final Battle (3-part miniseries, 1984), which introduced human-like alien Visitors that appear to have good intentions but in actual fact want to harvest humans for food. It's a heavyhanded rise-of-facism allegory, with the story centered on the resistance effort and fighting for earth's freedom. It's hokey and earnest and the production value gets increasingly shoddy in comparison to the miniseries + it's full of tropes and cool silly one-liners but honestly, that's half of the charm.

What do you love about it?:
Sci-fi silliness! Lazers that go pew pew pew! Unnecessary combat rolls! Delightfully outdated special effects! Michael fucking Ironside! Whump! It's a canon that lends itself to fic because it's firstly chock-full of tropes, and secondly, there's a bunch of plot points and loose threads the writers never follow up on that I'd love to see explored. Sinister and sexy aliens invaders in unfashionable jumpsuits, resistance fighters making things explode and commandeering cars/spaceships/motorbikes/horses. Ragtag group of survivors and fighters as found family! It requires very little mental effort to watch and I had a blast with the 80s vibes and individual resistance characters.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
Character study, missing scenes, canon divergence, hurt/comfort. I'm a sucker for a "mean, gruff, competent fixer and hardened killer who doesn't work well in a team but, oh wait, has a sad dead-family backstory" character, so I'll be requesting Ham Tyler focused fic. His appearance gives a cynical balance to the earnest saviour stuff. I'd love to see behind his harsh exterior, friendships with Chris and Julie, and fallout and PTSD from the conversion/brainwashing attempt. It's fun seeing him butt heads with Donovan and I might request shipfic here purely because they'd both despise admitting any such development and I love rivals-to-friends-to-lovers in general.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?:
My boy Ham only sticks around for the first 12 episodes of the series before peacing out, and is only introduced in part 2 of The Final Battle.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
Not really? Facist overtones and alien racism notwithstanding. Character death. Most of the violence is pretty camp by today's standards. There's a weird plot point of accelerated growth hybrid child who suddenly grows to adulthood and has a romance plot despite being like...one year old...but it's just poorly developed melodrama than anything truly creepy.

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun

(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Title: Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun

Media: Manga and anime

Approx length: Anime has 2 seasons (23 and 21 episodes respectively), there'll be third season, but it'll only start airing during Yuletide. Manga is ongoing with 28 published volumes.

Where to find it: Anime is available on Crunchyroll
https://www.crunchyroll.com/welcome-to-demon-school-iruma-kun
Manga has only recently had been officially published, but it has a dedicated community

What is it, in summary?:
Suzuki Iruma is an unlucky boy with terrible parents who keep using their son's kindness for their own selfish gains. This culminates in said parents selling their son to a demon. Luckily for Iruma, the demon in question bought him, because he intends to make Iruma his grandson. Unfortunately for Iruma, it turns out that humans are considered something of a delicacy in the world of demons. But this potential threat may be a small price to pay for a chance to find true family and friends in this new magical world

What do you love about it?:
This canon clearly took some inspiration from Harry Potter, and executes on the same basic premise in a way I found extremely satisfying. It starts similarly with a mistreated boy finding himself in a magical world that's both fascinating and dangerous. However, Iruma-kun puts a bigger focus on how its main character slowly overcomes the damage that years of mistreatment done to him and how he starts to change as a person. At the beginning this story promises that someday Iruma will become demon king, which sounds ridiculous. But at some point you realize that it has become a real possibility and that it had always been a natural progression of Iruma's character, because it was inevitable he would have fallen in love with the demon world more deeply than anyone else ever could

I already took too much space talking just about Iruma's great character arc, so to quickly recount other great aspects: very entertaining side characters, great comedy, a gradual expansion of demon world's worldbuilding that makes it more complex, but never kills the magic of the setting, more serious plotlines manage to effectively cooexist with the comedic aspects of the story, non-binary catperson butler

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
Iruma's relationship with local Snape equivalent (Kalego), who is actually a decent teacher. And who accidentally becomes Iruma's familiar. Their fraught, but honest relationship is fascinating to me and I want to see more of their interactions. It feels like there is so much they could teach other given the chance.

Iruma and a young terrorist (Kirio), who might be a bit too into the whole fated enemies concept. There are so many great parallels between them and the slow buildup to the inevitable fallout. Also I ship them so much due to their twisted, but extremely genuine connection.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?:
The content of the first anime season (or its manga equivalent) establishes the relationships between the characters I plan to request and provides enough information to fulfill my request

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
There are demon terrorists who attempt to do terrorist things, but due to light-hearted tone of the story, their plans so far always end up being folded with no one dying or getting permanently injured. There's some violence and blood, but it's more stylized than graphic. The threat of the protagonist getting eaten is a reoccuring element

Media: Youtube video

Approx length: 1:37 (It's short!)

Where to find it:

What is it, in summary?: It's a video summarizing a nonexistent canon in a manner very similar to, well, what it says on the tin.

What do you love about it?: What don't I love about it? The overwrought fantasy names (Arrrerrorrer!), the map, the narration, the actual tantalizing hints of an interesting story!

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Worldbuilding all the way on this one. There's a surprisingly good framework here that I would love to see expanded upon and it could go SO many ways!

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: The entire canon is one short video. No major commitment here!

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
No major warnings here. References to war and such but certainly nothing in any detail.

Where to find it: wherever you get books!

What is it, in summary?: Take a Scooby Doo parody, add Cthulhu mythos, and stir.

Or the longer version: four kids (and a dog) once had a detective club and they solved local mysteries during the summer, usually finding the culprit to be someone in a costume. 13 years later, those kids are now traumatized adults and they're realizing that there was more to their final case and they go to re-investigate.

What do you love about it?: I love the concept and the author does a great job of realizing it. What if there really was something supernatural going on during a Scooby Doo case? What if it were Mythos-related? I also love the realistic depictions of how something like this would have lasting effects on those involved.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Most of the book is from either Nate or Andy's viewpoint; I'd love to see more of Kerri. I'd also enjoy either past or future fic - either tell me about one of their earlier cases or what happens after the book. Do they go on to investigate more cases? Leaning into either side of this could be fun, too. Borrow some Scooby Doo plots! Use more Mythos lore and Elder Gods! It's all good.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: not really

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): alcoholism, violence, questionable depictions of mental health issues

Book of the Ancestor series

[personal profile] obscure_ramblings 2022-09-17 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Title: Book of the Ancestor series by Mark Lawrence, published 2017–2019

Media: Book series

Approx length: Three books (467 pages, 416 pages, 352 pages)

Where to find it: Available at libraries, bookstores and on Audible.

What is it, in summary? The sun on Abeth is dying and ice encroaches further each year, leading to the inhabitants battling for the remaining viable land and resources. The Convent of Sweet Mercy trains girls to become assassins in the war. The bloodlines of the four original tribes that settled the planet (Gerant, Hunska, Marjal, Quantal) manifest in new combinations that influence size, speed, ability to shadow weave, and ability to warp reality.

What do you love about it? Strong female characterization (90% of the cast are women and girls); diversity in terms of appearance, age and values of the characters. Dark fantasy and sci-fi elements. Plot twists. The value of friendship. Strong worldbuilding.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it? Worldbuilding, especially settling the planet and lore around the shiphearts. Missing scenes for Nona Grey and Arabella Jotsis. Backstory for Sister Apple and Sister Kettle (canon queer couple).

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships? The books are intended to be read as a series but the second one contains the most material for Sister Apple and Sister Kettle. Nona Grey (the main character) and Arabella Jotsis appear throughout the series.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): (From Triggerwarningdatabase.com) blood, torture, war, kidnapping, queer character death, parental abandonment, abuse of children and animals, murder, human trafficking, suicide

Stephen Donaldson: The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever

[personal profile] pikkugen 2022-09-17 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
Title: Stephen Donaldson: The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever

Media: Book series

Approx length: 10 books à ~500 pages (the characters requested only appear in the first two/three books)

Where to find it: Library, anywhere that sells older books (the first is from the 1970's)

What is it, in summary?: Thomas Covenant is your stereotypical male writer protagonist who first finds that he has leprosy(!) and then his wife leaves him (...) and finally he gets abducted to a strange world(!) which he at first firmly believes is his own hallucinations (hence the Unbeliever part), all the while being a whiny little bitch about it all. So, yeah, the setup is somewhat typical for the genre. But hear me out. I hate the protagonist. I hate him through the series, even though Donaldson tries to make him a little more agreeable during the later books. I rolled my eyes SO HARD about the leprosy part; even in the 70s they knew how to FUCKING CURE IT. Simple antibiotics and bang, no more leprosy. But okay, I'll play. Sooooo, why do I want something out of this? WELL.

What do you love about it?: The world and all of the sidecast are FLAWLESS. Ignore the protagonist (please!) and the Land is a beautiful sandbox that evolves in time and is filled with wonderful characters that I want to see more about. Lord Mhoram is <3, Saltheart Foamfollower is <3, the Ranyhyn are <3, and there are equally lovely side characters in the later books which I'm not requesting now.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Ummm. I have requested them before, and I guess my preferences haven't changed. What were these characters like before Covenant arrived and disturbed everything? What were they like after he went and left the smoldering ruins behind? What goes on in the Land while Covenant is away? Worldbuilding, I guess, or maybe a character study, or even art if you're so inclined.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: The characters I want are mostly in the first two books, maybe three if you want more of Saltheart.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Hoo boy. Warning for rape (you can see it coming and it's somewhat graphic, but boy does he wallow in his guilt all the way afterwards, if you're sensitive to that; no victim blaming though.) Gore and lots of it. This is a fantasy world and fights are graphic. Also some descriptions of leprosy that might go under your skin if you're sensitive to it. Mentions of mental breakout, and considering this was written in the 70s, it's... not as sensitive as you would expect nowadays. Also the language is atrocious at times *grin*.

Title: You Are My Glory (Chinese contemporary drama – 32 episodes x 30 minutes each episode)

Where Can I Find ItWeTV official siteViki | A fan translation of the source novel into English also available here, and the drama follows the novel very closely so the novel can be used as alternative source to the drama – probably will take less time to consume than the whole drama.

What is it, in summary: This drama is a romance between Qiao Jing Jing, a famous actress (Dilraba Dilmurat) and Yu Tu, an aerospace engineer (Yang Yang). Back when they were in high school, Jing Jing had a crush on Yu Tu, but was rejected by him when she confessed her feelings. The drama opens over ten years later, and they are now both 30. Jing Jing is an extremely famous actress who is enjoying great career success. Yu Tu, who double majored in Finance and Aerospace Engineering in university, had chosen to give up high paying jobs in finance after university to chase a career in aerospace engineering research. Working for a government agency for relatively low pay, he is now facing something of a quarter-life crisis where he wonders if he should continue pursuing this dream job or to switch careers to get a higher paying job.

Jing Jing is currently the endorser of Honor of Kings, a mobile game, however a video of her playing the game very poorly is leaked on the internet, threatening not only her status as the endorser but also her acting career. In an attempt to save her image, she promises to take part in a public game competition in one month’s time and spends a lot of time practicing the game. She accidentally meets Yu Tu on the game. Yu Tu turns out to be a great player and Jing Jing recruits him to coach her in the game. For the next month, they meet each other everyday to play the game and romance ensues.

What do you love about it?: The greatest thing about this drama is that it is, at the core of it, a heart-warming romance featuring two emotionally mature characters without any frustrating love triangle shenanigans. There are a couple of exes who appear, but they serve to show how the two lead characters have grown over the years. The conflicts that place roadblocks between Jing Jing and Yu Tu are mostly internal struggles that they in the end manage to overcome themselves and by eventually communicating and trusting each other.

While she does have to maintain a certain image as a public figure, Jing Jing as a character is down to earth and full of heart. The drama not only shows what goes behind the scene to build a career like hers, but also the real person she is behind the cameras, who is just mostly nice and kind and well-adjusted. Yu Tu is a very relatable male lead in that he has very normal people problems. While he was a bit of a pretentious big shot in high school and university, Yu Tu had had to face the reality of adult life that intelligence and hard work do not necessarily equate to success (or at least, society’s definition of success). This is what fuels his dilemma of whether to continue in a job that makes him happy or trying to switch to a career that clearly would be soul-crushing to him but would give him the financial cushion to take care of his family.

The romance between the leads evolves organically. You can see not only the way Yu Tu opens up and begins to develop feelings for Jing Jing after realising that there is much more to her than his shallow opinions of her in high school, but you also the way Jing Jing’s feelings for him evolve from a schoolgirl crush in high school into a more mature love. They both learn to appreciate each other for the people they have grown to be. Once they get together, the drama becomes almost entirely romantic fluff, showcasing a very loving and supportive relationship where despite the fact that their individual careers put them in a long-distance relationship for years, they still are able to maintain an equal and happy partnership. These are two people who are very devoted to each other, who are just kind to and supportive of each other, helping each other to improve and become better versions of themselves.

There is almost no side plot. The supporting cast mostly serves to push the main couple’s story along and don’t really have much development.

Content warning/Things that might not float your boat: While the first half of the drama does explore both leads’ characters and motivations, it also focuses a lot on the game Honor of Kings. This is very much a product placement drama for the game, however, you can either skip or just let the gaming parts wash over you, as you do not need to understand the game to understand the drama.

While aerospace research is a large part of Yu Tu’s character journey and development, the way the drama showcases the field tends towards propaganda. There is very heavy, obvious promotion of the Chinese space exploration program, to the point where there are long stretches of episodes where it feels like the drama is just info-dumping space exploration Wikipedia on you without the information having much to do with the romance plot. The last couple of episodes do offer rather cathartic rewards to Yu Tu’s career, but it is also fairly screaming nationalistic rhetoric at you. However, as long as you are aware it is doing this, it is possible to overlook this and enjoy the emotional rewards for the characters instead.

Jing Jing and her manager have a rather unhealthy obsession with her weight, but it’s somewhat tempered by the fact that Yu Tu looks kind of uncomfortable every time Jing Jing talks about her completely unnecessary plans to lose weight. It’s clearly a source of pressure of her career that he just completely does not understand and really, audience can relate.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: I’ll probably end up requesting the same thing I did last year for this fandom, mostly Jingjing/Yu Tu. You can find my Dear Yuletide Writer letter last year with prompts here.

The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine - Spoon

[personal profile] fencesit 2022-09-17 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Title:
The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine by Spoon

Media: Song

Approx length: ~3 minutes

Where to find it:
On youtube or whereever else you like to to buy/stream music.

What is it, in summary?:
A song where the narrator describes a play called The Stranger Dance which he would like to land a role in. The play has swordfights, a kidnapping, canon m/m lovemaking, a political landscape that involves a Duke and a Queen, and a dramatic death scene that the narrator would like to star in.

What do you love about it?:
Honestly The Stranger Dance sounds iddy as fuck and I wish it existed. The song implies a lot of political intrigue/dramatic reveals/possibly some identity shenanigans, which are some of my favorite things. I think there's just enough detail in the song to paint a super compelling picture while also leaving a bunch of wiggle room for interpretation. I also really love the narrator's optimism, and the sense that the narrator is using this play as a way to escape however briefly from his real-life circumstances which include watching the news (relatable) and also having Sydenham's chorea (a movement disorder that would probably prevent the narrator from landing a part in a play until the disease clears up).

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
Eddie/the Duke or Eddie/the Duke/the Queen, or gen with any of my requested characters (which will be Eddie, the Duke, the Queen, and M. Valentine since it's unclear if M. Valentine is Eddie or not). I'm interested in anything that fleshes out the events and characters of The Stranger Dance, whether it's set in the world of The Stranger Dance or if it's something that involves the narrator reading or acting out some part of the play! I would love a play script format, if anyone's into that! I would DEFINITELY love something that touches on Eddie's "last dying scene".

(Also, my sign up will include a note that I want a fic that at least mentions all four characters, but they don't all need to show up on-page — so something like a scene between the Duke and the Queen where they discuss or mention Eddie and M. Valentine would be fine!)

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: No, but it's only one song lol.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Character death technically I guess.

Ergo Proxy (Anime)

Title: Ergo Proxy

Media: Anime

Approx length: 1 season - 23 episodes just under 30 minutes each.

Where to find it:. Available on DVD and numerous streaming services, including Funimation and Hulu (where it looks like it’s free to watch?)

What is it, in summary?: In the domed city of Romdeau, Re-L Mayer is an investigator with the city intelligence services, trying to get to the heart of what a ‘proxy’ is and whether it relates to the dreaded Cogito virus sweeping through the city’s AutoReivs (cyborgs). As the granddaughter of the city’s Regent, she has privileges above many, but grows to see how meaningless they truly are.

Vincent Law is an immigrant to Romdeau, working hard to be granted the citizenship he feels is so important. But when his path diverges (and boy does it), he is forced to figure out who he really is and what he wants.

Pino is an young girl AutoReiv, a child assigned to a couple not yet approved for a human baby. A shocking event both shatters her world and opens up its possibilities.

In the midst of sci fi exploration and adventure, each character explores what it truly means to be human and what the truth of their world is.

What do you love about it?:. I love the explorations of what it means to be human that the above characters - and some others - go through during the show. I particularly love Vincent and Re-L’s characters: who we meet at the start of the show turns out not to be who they really are, something that they have to figure out. Also, I really love the persistent kindness to Vincent’s nature. In a lot of other stories, that would have changed about him, but in this one, he remains a fundamentally kind person. (Still…don’t piss him off.)

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:. Slice of life during or after the series is fun (episode 18 is one of my favorites). A look at how Vincent and Re-L’s relationship evolves post-series.

Title: The Way Way Back (2013)

Media: Film

Approx length: 100 minutes

Where to find it:
HBO Max (US)
Disney+ (International)

What is it, in summary?:
An awkward teenage boy named Duncan reluctantly goes on summer vacation with his mom, her boyfriend, and her boyfriend's daughter. Feeling disconnected from his mom and resentful of her boyfriend, Duncan finds solace the friendships he builds at a nearby water park.

What do you love about it?:
To directly quote a text from one of my friends when they were halfway through this movie for the first time, "Your favorite movie has Sam Rockwell, found family, and an autistic coded protagonist? I'm floored." And yep!! Those are the vibes!! I adore Sam Rockwell's character, Owen -- he's precisely the kind of mentor that Duncan needs to pull him out of his shell -- and I adore the family that Duncan finds at the water park and the coming of age story that this movie becomes through the agency and growth that he finds with them. And yeah Duncan is autistic-coded af (and tbh I think he and Owen are the epitome of autistic/ADHD solidarity) and I think the portrayal there is one of the most realistic and relatable experiences I've ever seen on screen.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
I'm going to ask for a few things! Duncan & Owen fic absolutely, but also Owen/Caitlin (Owen's love interest at the water park, played by Maya Rudolph). I also am planning to nominate Duncan's mom, Pam, in the hopes of either some fic where she and Duncan can work through some of the places where their relationship has broken down or perhaps fic that develops Pam's story beyond Duncan and her relationship with her shitty boyfriend.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?:
The home life arc with Duncan, his mom, et al is almost entirely separate from the water park arc -- though they do all come together in the climactic scene of the film -- but the movie is structured very heavily around parallels between these two parts of Duncan's life, so tbh it should probably be consumed in its entirety.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
The mom's boyfriend employs several common emotional abuse tactics toward Duncan and the characters nearly get into a physical altercation in one scene

Trusty Bell: Chopin no Yume | Eternal Sonata

Media: Video Game

Approx length: 30 to 60 hours, depending on completion

Where to find it:
XBox 360 and Playstation 3

What is it, in summary?: A whimsical role-playing game from 2007/2008 set within the fever dream of Romantic Era composer Frederic Chopin while he lies dying of tuberculosis.

What do you love about it?: This game is the perfect synthesis for a classical music nerd who is also an RPG lover (i.e. me!). All of the characters and locations have music-related names, and musical references are creatively incorporated into the gameplay and setting. The soundtrack is wonderful, of course, as are the beautiful cell-shaded graphics. It has a fantastic battle system, and is by all measures a very good quality, well-made video game. But for me, it's the tribute to Chopin that it serves as which makes it special.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: My ideal request for this would be an alternate ending, as I found the canon ending (the good ending, mind you) rather confusing and disappointing compared to the rest of the game.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Instead of playing the full game, a person could watch the 'movie' version (cutscene compilation) on YouTube to experience the story in a shorter format.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
None that I can think of! It's pretty wholesome, overall.

Omg, I'm so glad to see this in the promos! I don't remember much of the game (I was so young when I played it) but I absolutely ADORED it. The Chopin boss battle sticks out a lot in my memory as a moment where I went, "No way," and tried to level up the rest of my team to make the fight easier. (It didn't work. 😂)

Double (Ayako Noda)

[personal profile] jessenigma 2022-09-18 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Title: Double by Ayako Noda

Media: Manga

Approx length: The series is still ongoing (and estimated to wrap up after the next volume), but there are currently 4 volumes available in both Japanese and English, with 2 more untranslated chapters released in Japan.

Where to find it: the English release is widely available in bookstores both in print and in digital: https://www.tokyopop.com/book-catalogue-new-titles/double-vol-1. The original Japanese release is a web manga and available here: https://viewer.heros-web.com/episode/10834108156642488617

What is it, in summary?: Yuujin and Takara are both small theatre troupe actors in their 30s dreaming of their big break, but Yuujin sees so much potential in Takara, he'll do whatever it takes to get him there, even if it means his own fledgling career is leaning more towards being Takara's stage double. But when Takara does finally grab the attention of an agent and starts to separate from Yuujin professionally, how will their relationship change?

What do you love about it?: Stories about performers behind the scenes always have a certain appeal to me personally, but the intense relationship between Yuujin and Takara is the most appealing part of this series. Takara relies on Yuujin for so much in both his personal and professional life, and how they navigate that in the face of changing circumstances is absolutely fascinating.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Outsider povs of Takara and Yuujin's relationship, as well as individual character-centric fics, would be high on my list. I'm also interested in a lot of the side characters, like Takara's coworker turned romantic fling, and how they interact with the leads.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Canon is fairly short and the character and relationship developments span all of what's available, so it's best to read all of it.

Content warnings: A heavy dose of codependency between the leads and some sexual content (kept generally nonexplicit), as well as some method acting taken a little too far into misogyny.

Title: I Married My Best Friend To Shut My Parents Up

Media: Manga

Approx length: One short volume (158 pages)

Where to find it: Wherever you buy manga.

What is it, in summary?:

Morimoto Machi, a professional woman in Japan, is being pressured by her family to get married. To get them off her back, her female best friend Hana proposes a fake marriage (or as close to a same-sex marriage as Japanese law allows). But Hana has already admitted to Machi that she has romantic feelings for her, so will their marriage stay "fake"?

What do you love about it?:

I have to admit I first bought it because it had such a great title. But the story is engaging, and I was surprised to find only one fic for it on AO3.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:

Definitely Machi/Hana fic. There's a lot more to explore about their relationship than one short volume can show.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: n/a

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Nothing that I can think of.

Thermos "Flower Series" Commercials

[personal profile] eirenical 2022-09-18 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Title: Thermos "Flower Series" Commercials

Media: Other Media (commercials)

Approx length: Each commercial is roughly 1-2 minutes long. There are seven commercials totaling 13:56 minutes.

Where to find it: The commercials can be found on YouTube. I have collected them here in a Thermos "Flower Series" Commercials playlist. Only the first seven videos in the playlist are the commercials. The 8th video is one starring Xiao Zhan for bubly. (I'll elaborate on why I included that in the playlist further down.)

What is it, in summary?: Seven short film-style commercials detailing the adventures of a magician-type character who wanders from location to location healing the world and helping people who need a little help... with the power of a well-placed Thermos.

What do you love about it?/What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: The Thermos people really did just look at each other and say "If we've managed to get Zhu Yilong to agree to promote our products, then damn it, we are going to make the best use of him we can!" and then gave him a bunch of mini-movies to act in. ;D

But in all seriousness, what really appeals to me about these commercials is the sheer world-building potential. I saw the Gardenia commercial first, and it had me at "here is this person who has magic portal powers and uses them to... wander the city and solve everyone's sadness by being a... Fairy... Thermos... Father...???" And then each successive commercial I saw just compounded the potential, especially if we assume that this Wanderer/Magician character is the same character in each commercial. What kind of magic does he have? How do these worlds connect to each other? Do the people of these worlds know about the magic that helps and protects them? In the snow-covered worlds that the Magician brings light to... how did they end up so dark and cold to begin with? Why did the Magician come to them? How does he know who needs help?

(And if you want some fun crossover potential, Xiao Zhan did a commercial for bubly in which he plays a... Fairy Bubly Father? I don't even know anymore. But he basically does the same thing with cans of bubly as Zhu Yilong's character does with Thermoses in the Gardenia commercial--solves everyone sadness. Do they know each other? Do they work together? I have so many questions. XD There could also be some fun crossover potential with the Time Engraver commercials, if you wanted to go there. ^_^)

Anyway, I love these commercials a truly ridiculous amount, and I hope you'll give them a shot! ^_^

If you'd like to know more specifically what I'm likely to request for it, here is the section in my Yuletide Letter from last year. I'm likely to request pretty much the same things.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: You certainly can watch individual commercials as opposed to all seven of them and focus more on one than another depending on what appeals to you? Here are brief summaries of each commercial:

Gardenia: Z1L's character helps out sad and struggling people with magical Thermoses.
Sunflower: Z1L's character finds a magical sun seed in a tomb and uses it and a Thermos to bring life back to a world of ice.
Wisteria: Z1L's character, sad and alone in a boat on an ocean, climbs a ladder to the moon to find a lush world in which can find respite. There is a cat. ^_^
Camellia: Z1L's character finds a magical cottage in a land of ice, full of lush overgrown plants, an oasis in the cold.
Unlabeled (Peony): Z1L's character wanders through a lush wilderness delighted with the flowers he smells.
Tulip: Z1L's character explores an old mansion, finds a secret room with a magical flower that turns into a Thermos.
Daisy: Z1L's character explores a gallery (looking very like the virtual gallery Thermos created for his birthday this year), becomes fascinated with a painting of a field of daisies, steps into the painting to explore, brings the magic and Thermoses back with him to the gallery when he returns.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Nothing I can think of?

80 days (Video game)

[personal profile] ekevka 2022-09-18 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Title: 80 days

Media: Video game, available on Nintendo Switch™, as well as Windows, macOS, iOS and Android

Approx length: n/a

Where to find it: the official game site with links to various online shops, and a trailer

What is it, in summary?: a steampunk interactive mostly text-based game, based in a way on the famous Around the World in 80 days by Jules Verne. While it does share the protagonists (you make decisions as Passepartout and are the valet of Phileas Fogg) and the goal (to circumnavigate the world in 80 days or less), it does lean more into the steampunk approach - you can use airships of various make, fast steamboats and trains (one can be discovered to be a maglev even!), as well as mechanical elephants, meet automatons and even try to get to the Moon!
(or take the Nautilus)
It also pays far more attention to the places you pass, and while you can miss them entirely, if you do explore, you get more from the worldbuilding, which is very extensive.

What do you love about it?: I love the steampunk, I love the vague relationship between Fogg and Passepartout - depending on the playthrought you can get their relationship anywhere from fairly romantic to barely tolerable (it is never obvious, but apparently I'm a sucker for repressed XIX century gentlemen!). Or you can get Passepartout several love interests - one he can even settle down with, a nice Finn Artificer named Vitti Jokunen (go north to meet him, very-very north!) This one is more modern, with kisses, a picnic in an air balloon, bed sharing, one side running away and then a sudden meeting again!

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Fogg/Passepartout, obviously, and Passepartout/Jokunen(/Fogg), but I'd be more than fine with road trips, or just something pining.
If I do request worldbuilding, it'll likely be something to do with automatons and Artificers' Guild

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: no, unfortunately, although there might be playthroughs on youtube.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): the reality depicted has empires cracking down on native people pretty much everywhere, you can stumble upon slavers and can do nothing about them, racism.
