Share what makes your Yuletide fandoms the shiniest and why you love them. A big part of Yuletide is how small our fandoms can be, and this is a good way to make sure other people know what gems there are out there!

FANDOM NAME: Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night



WHAT IS IT: The game is a "spiritual successor to Castlevania," but it is not necessary to know Castlevania games to enjoy it (I didn't.) It's a 2.5D side-scroller action RPG with a large variety of weapons and magic abilities, enemies, and areas to explore. It took me about 35 hours to get to the credits iirc, but I suspect I was rather slow.

Ten years ago alchemists sacrificed the children they had experimented on (called "Shardbinders" for their ability to bond with demonic shards of power) to open the gates of hell. Eventually, the demons were defeated, but now the only surviving sacrifice, Gebel, has raised a castle full of demons to get revenge.
Miriam is the second surviving Shardbinder: because of a spell she literally slept through the apocalypse. Now she is awake again and determined to stop – and save – her friend Gebel. She is helped by Johannes, an alchemist and Gebel's former best friend. Other people she encounters on the way include Dominique, an exorcist; Alfred, Johannes' former master; a vampire librarian and a demon barber; and Zangetsu, a very powerful demon hunter who hates alchemists and distrusts Shardbinders.

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: I love the characters. Miriam woke up to find out pretty much everyone she knew or cared about is gone and now it is her mission to "stop" Gebel – which she understands as saving him from the demonic corruption, but everyone else expects her to kill him. She gains demonic powers knowing that for every new one the crystal embedded in her skin will kill her faster, and yet she never stops being kind. Johannes spent the last ten years planning to kill his now-evil best friend while taking care of a comatose Miriam and now has to wait while she fights demons that could either kill or corrupt her. Zangetsu has been fighting demons for years and plans to stop the last, evil Shardbinder, and now there is another one who clearly cannot be trusted either. And Gebel survived being sacrificed to start the apocalypse by the people who raised him, made deals with demons, and now he wants revenge, or does he…
