2021 Yuletide Promo Post

Welcome to the Fandom Promo post, everyone!

Here's where you get those eyes on your fandoms for sign ups!

Share what makes your Yuletide fandoms the shiniest and why you love them. A big part of Yuletide is how small our fandoms can be, and this is a good way to make sure other people know what gems there are out there!

Suggested form to use:

<b>FANDOM NAME</b>:
<b>WHAT MAKES IT GREAT</b>:
<b>WHERE CAN I FIND IT (optional)</b>

(Bonus optional: What are you thinking of requesting for this?)

EDIT:

Useful tips (Not required, but helps people if they want to engage with your fandom!):

- Mention what form of media the canon is. Is it a comic miniseries? Is it a twenty season tv show? Is it a book? Is it a twitter feed?
- Is it standalone or part of a series?
- It's best to make each fandom its own entry with its own title in the subject line! That makes it easier for people to find/see what you're promoting! Don't worry about 'spam', that is the entire point of this entry and you're using it exactly as intended.

For reference, last year's promo post!

Dragon Quest XI (Video game)

[personal profile] sarunohadaki 2021-09-19 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
FANDOM NAME: Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

WHAT IT IS: An RPG-style video game released in English in 2018

IMPORTANT NOTES: You do not need prior knowledge of the other 10 games to enjoy this one! The game takes about ~85 hours to play. Playthrough linked at the bottom of this post. There’s also a 5-part series of cutscenes compiled into “movies” that totals ~15 hours.

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: {Spoilers ahead!}
Look at this boy.

Now tell me you don’t at least think he’s cute or are slightly interested in his Hero’s Journey across a land that eventually succumbs to crippling darkness but through the power of friendship and found family is saved, with the hero going back in time at the end of the second act to prevent the darkness from happening in the first place.

DQXI is full of a cast of lovable characters, each with their own unique voice and appeal. (Even the 30-year-old men get some love!) The game has a lot of lore, fun character dynamics, and potential for worldbuilding. (IF you can overlook the mindf*kery that is the world map.)

The man, the myth, the fabulous legend.

Sylvando is probably at least 50% of what makes this game great. He’s a lot of people’s favorite character, and who can blame him? He might initially come off as a gay stereotype but spend some more time with him and you will rapidly fall in love with his energy, kindness, and humor. It’s like they took everything LGBTQ and put it into this one precious little character. Give him different pronouns, let him be a literal clown, have him be your party’s Emotional Support Parent. It’s all up for grabs when Sylv’s around. (Or Sylvia, if you prefer~)

Lastly, the shipping. The longer I stick around this fandom, the more brain worms I have accrued, to the point that I don’t think there’s any (reasonable) ship that I would not enjoy. There are so many possible pairings that have yet to be explored, and don’t even get me started on friendships!

Missing scenes, fix-its, and canon diverge are popular mainstays for this fandom and there is a lot of canon material you can throw into the garbage, tweak, or build upon.

WHERE CAN I FIND IT:
Playthrough on Youtube (There IS commentary)

On the off chance anyone else is interested in this… I’m willing to write a wide variety of different things for this fandom, and I already sort of have. Otherwise, I have yet to decide upon what I will be requesting, but it will probably be worldbuilding-related as I feel there’s not enough love given to beautiful Erdrea. (That, or character backstories/ships.)

WHAT IT IS: Music video

IMPORTANT NOTES: It’s 4 minutes long and has almost 14 million views on Youtube. If you haven’t seen it yet, what are you waiting for?

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT:
The colors! The animation! And… the music, of course! It gives me heavy nostalgic vibes and has the potential for a lot of worldbuilding.

Also…

Strive! A soft boy!!!

I am obsessed with him and wholeheartedly invite you to fawn over him with me. He’s expressive, has hair floof, and a heart of gold. What’s not to love?

Heaven's Vault (video game)

[personal profile] laughingpineapple 2021-09-19 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
FANDOM NAME: Heaven's Vault

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: It's got the breadth of a grand RPG without the pesky non-narrative sides. You're an archaeologist and the main gameplay mechanic has you and your robot companion translate an ancient language from the various inscriptions you find in ancient sites. You can miss stuff, you can get stuff wrong and form wrong hypotheses and go down weird paths too, there is no hand-holding and no failure. That alone is amazing and rightfully won it a truckload of awards.

The branching narrative, with constant dialogue and dialogue choices, is interactive fiction at its best.

And the mixed 3d-2d art style really makes the most of its limited budget. It all adds up to an incredibly immersive journey into a soft sci-fi universe with a lot to say about history, cycles, distribution of resources and more. It's all so imaginative and forms such a cohesive whole.

And on top of it all, the small cast of characters is intriguing and their relationships are a bit off-kilter and tense. Main character Aliya and her robot companion Six are stand-outs, with the game's take on robots in particular being rife with potential for exploration.
TRAILER HERE since I can't seem to embed this gosh dang video :(

WHERE CAN I FIND IT: PC digital storefront of your choice (here on Steam), Switch or PS4! It is also part of this month's Humble Bundle if that helps any? here! A single playthrough takes 15-20 hours. It is a standalone game with no additional material.

WHAT I'M REQUESTING: worldbuilding for miles. This nebula with its moons and rivers and layered history has such a unique personality, and the timeline you discover through the game has plenty of intriguing events that I'd love to read about in greater depth.
Characters-wise, some basic postcanon fare or bonding between the leads or yet more worldbuilding through a focus on a relevant empress of yore or a past explorer.

FANDOM NAME: Hadestown

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: It's a musical about love, written in a retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, a retelling steeped in Americana. Even though it's unmistakably a tragedy, it's also a story about hope. It's mainly a romance between two pairs of lovers, but with the parallels built between the characters, there's lots of room for intriguing non-canon relationships (gen and romantic). It's got a really good jazz/singer-songwriter soundtrack written by Anais Mitchell.

The big appeal to me is that this show truly portrays how love can be complicated: one of the main couples is struggling because their long-term goals have shifted and they've grown apart; the other is caught in a struggle between one's passionate career and the other's need to eat. Even the narrator Hermes knows it isn't easy, and you get the sense that he's been disappointed before, even if he keeps on going on. It felt prescient when it debuted on Broadway and it has only become more so as it relaunched last month.

Also, the music is really a banger. Here's a good introductory track that has all the characters, performed by the original broadway cast.

The cast has also done a 30-minute long tiny desk concert, which gives you a pretty good mix of the different styles of music and the wide range of voices in the cast.

It's a musical with two acts, and the Broadway version runs about two hours.

WHERE CAN I FIND IT?: Currently playing on Broadway, in South Korea, and going on tour in North America this year. The broadway soundtrack is available on Apple Music and Spotify.

Ammonite (2020)

(Anonymous) 2021-09-19 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
FANDOM NAME: Ammonite (2020, Movie)

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: If you're into f/f tragic historical romances, the English coast and Dorset's more specifically, fossils and middle-aged British actresses, you've probably already heard of this. If you enjoy learning about the erased history of women in science, realistic depictions of everyday life in the 19th century, complex female characters and seaside atmospheres, you should probably watch it too.
Image
Brought to us by the creator of God's Own Country, it tells the story of real-life paleontologist Mary Anning (Kate Winslet), famous for her groundbreaking findings of Jurassic fossils in her hometown of Lyme Regis in the first part of the 19th century, and more specifically of her developing relationship with Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan), a young woman who's been advised to "take the waters" to recover from a personal tragedy.
Image
The reason I love this movie, perhaps more than the romance itself, has to do with the themes it tackles, and how subtle it can be in that regard. Its main subject, I think, is dispossession: how can you manage to call something your own, when you're a woman in 19th century England? Be it a child, your work (scientific or otherwise), your own feelings, it can always be taken away from you. Every female character in this struggles for autonomy in her own way, but given the social conditions, this is hardly achievable.
Another great trait is how realistic it tries to be when it comes to class and the physical pains of work. It doesn't glamorize Mary's hardships, digging through muddy cliffs in winter, and oh the wind and rain. More generally speaking, this is a movie that recognizes and honors the various pains of all the women on screen, from the flesh wounds to the psychological suffering, while at the same time underlining how class can still be a great divider between them. Mary historically came from a working-class background, which (in addition to her gender) makes her an anomaly in her field. Her life choices, her relationship to Charlotte and to each and every character is deeply informed by that, in a way that rings true and isn't sacrificed for the sake of romance.

Which brings me the one last quality (and honestly, my fave): Fiona Shaw as Elizabeth Philpot, anther historical paleontology figure, and Mary Anning's long-time friend/potential love interest.
Image
If you're like me, a Fiona Shaw stan, you're in a for a treat. She only has a few scenes but she's incredible in all of them. And the implications of her character's former and possibly future relationship with Anning are quite fascinating to me. Philpot encouraged Anning to pursue a career in paleontology, and while being of a higher social status, they formed a close bond. Fic-wise, I think there is great potential there too: I want to know all about their past, mentoring young Mary, discover amazing things in the ground, etc.

WHERE CAN I FIND IT (optional): it's available on many streaming services, including Youtube, Hulu and Amazon Prime.

Kyousougiga - 京騒戯画

FANDOM NAME: Kyousougiga
Kyousougiga
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: What happens when a black rabbit falls in love with a lonely priest? According to this anime, a perfectly normal family that just happens to include a mech-loving monk or prim and proper demon.

Combining both Buddhist mythology and the writings of Lewis Carrol, Kyousougiga creates a wild and imaginative world, beautifully animated and realized. The worldbuilding alone would be a marvel to focus on, but in just ten episodes, it also manages to include a very emotional story of family and all the pain and joy it brings. What does it mean to carry your parent's expectations? How does your relationship with your siblings change as you all grow up and have your own lives apart from one another? How do you help your loved ones with their baggage and trauma all while carrying your own, sometimes problems that the very loved one caused in the first place?

Metaphors and magic mix together to create a surreal world where these problems have just as much an effect on our character's internal world as it has on the world outside of them. Shapes and colors weave together a story that charms and astonishes a first-time audience and only grows richer and deeper with each subsequent viewing.

WHERE CAN I FIND IT (optional): All ten episodes can be found for free on Crunchyroll. In addition it also hosts an episode 0, which is the original pilot for the series. While not necessary for any viewing, it is a fun romp showing an average day for Koto in the Looking Glass City. For those sensitive to spoilers though, it does contain plot elements that get used in the series up until episode 6, the mid-series finale.

Nero Wolfe - Rex Stout

FANDOM NAME: Nero Wolfe - Rex Stout
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT:
It's a mystery series, with 47 books published from 1934 to 1985. You definitely don't have to have read all of the books to pick up the gist of the series. The characters move through time, staying the same age as the world changes around them, and it's a very interesting sort of time capsule. (There's also been a TV series and various other adaptations; the A&E TV series from a couple about 20 years ago was set in the 50s.)

I love it because of Archie. Archie is the narrator, who works as the assistant to Nero Wolfe, the titular detective. Archie's narration is dry, hilarious, and clever; the books read incredibly easily and haven't aged poorly at all except for a handful of period-typical attitudes. He's ridiculously competent and always approaches situations with a sense of humor which makes the books so fun; they don't take themselves too seriously which is I think part of why they hold up so well. I'll also be requesting Saul Panzer, one of the other detectives who works for Wolfe, who is also ridiculously competent. This fandom lends itself very well to casefic and competency kink. The picture we get of mid-century Manhattan is very well-drawn and Wolfe's fixation on his routine (he won't let even the appearance of a client after a long drought take him out of his greenhouses early) make for very comfortable reads that can be read in any order or sampled as you like. (Lots of people also ship Archie/Wolfe so there's definitely potential for that, as well, and I'll probably be nominating all 3 of them, along with Lily, Archie's sometime girlfriend unless someone would like different characters.)

We Are Lady Parts - TV show

[personal profile] itsanizzyb 2021-09-19 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
FANDOM NAME: We Are Lady Parts

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT:
We Are Lady Parts is a six-episode comedy TV series about an all-girl, Muslim punk-rock band. Episodes are 20 mins so it would take you about 2 hours to watch it all. They do play songs but only about 7 over the course of the show, so it's not particularly musical-like.

It follows Amina as she becomes part of Lady Parts while navigating her crippling stage-fright, working on her PhD in microbiology, and helping with her best friend's wedding preparations. This show was so pitch-perfect and hilarious and I thought Amina was a superbly (if sometimes cringe-ly) relatable character.

Highlights:

They all go out to a field and dance around a bonfire for some reason???
All of the women in the band have complicated lives outside of the band and none of them are caricatures/stereotypes of Muslim women.
A song called "Voldemort Under My Headscarf."
Amina sings "Creep" by Radiohead in a cafeteria, in her internal monologue.
I, personally, adore this because Saira and Amina are SO my favourite dynamic of "flippant-to-cover-up-emotional-damage" (Saira) and "doesn't-know-she's-gay-until-she's-fallen-way-too-hard" (Amina).
If you liked Girls 5Eva, Derry Girls, or other female-focused 20-min comedies, you'll probably like Lady Parts.

What am I thinking of requesting for this? Femslash with Saira and Amina, exploring some loose ends from the last episode, comedy, character dynamics!

You know, me too. I believe there is some meta element to the video, as the lead vocalist, Dan Avidan, represents Strive and the four members of TWRP are his space crew, each with their own futuristic sona. I don't know anything about the band TWRP but I presume that knowledge would be good to know, but not necessary.

I'm excited that you're excited! So glad I decided to latch onto this particular cute space character.

The Betrayals - Bridge Collins (book)

(Anonymous) 2021-09-19 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
FANDOM NAME: The Betrayals - Bridget Collins
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: From the blurb:
At Monteverre, an ancient and elite academy hidden high in the mountains, society's best and brightest are trained for excellence in the grand jeu--the great game--an arcane and mysterious competition that combines music, art, math, and philosophy.

(TW: suicide, drug use, religious persecution.)

The story centers on Leo Martin, a former star pupil returning to Montverre against his will, and Claire Dryden, the first and only woman to teach at the academy. There's a mysterious connection between them (though Leo's sure they've never met before). There's plenty of tense enemies-to-lovers relationships, a political conspiracy closing in, and violent secrets within the academy's walls (sometimes literally). It's got the vibe of an arcane, European "Secret History". You can read a sample online here (https://preview.aer.io/The_Betrayals-MjcyMjkx?social=1&retail=1&emailcap=0&imprint=harpercollinsauz).

WHAT I PLAN TO REQUEST
Worldbuilding, pining, angst, and more worldbuilding! The grand jeu itself is mostly talked about rather than demonstrated, and I'd love anything that digs into what really happens when a game is taking place, whether it involves the canonical characters or not. There are also some younger secondary characters whom I'd really love to see developed into their future.

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Code Vein is a post-apocalyptic action RPG, and a rather difficult one at that, and while it takes place in the same universe as the God Eater series, you don't need to be familiar with God Eater to enjoy Code Vein. You play as an amnesic protagonist who bands with other revenants - humans who died and were revived as immortal vampiric beings - to battle the monstrous Lost and find a way to survive in a dying world. FANDOM NAME: Ellie and Abbie (and Ellie's Dead Aunt)

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT:
Ellie and Abbie (and Ellie's Dead Aunt) is an Australian teen rom-com about a queer girl and her love interest. It is a movie, runtime: 1 hour 22 mins.

It centres around Ellie, a proudly gay seventeen-year-old, who is visited by her "fairy" godmother (her deceased aunt), Tara, after coming out to her mum. The movie follows her as she tries to work up the courage to ask her crush to the formal and learns about her family history and queer activism through her aunt. The movie has an amazing soundtrack, amazing cast (esp. if you're Kiwi/Aussie), and it's all-around heart-warming.

Highlights:

Abbie is played by Zoe Terakes, an Indigenous non-binary actor who you may recognise from Nine Perfect Strangers!
Rachel House, beloved NZ icon, gives a stunning performance as Ellie's other aunt figure.
Tara's dyke camp everything.
It deals with some very heavy themes around queer history and queer futures but does it in a way that I thought was really great at interweaving the two and showing how they are related.
Hopeful! Funny! Heart-warming!
"I think we should have the sex talk again, because lesbian sex is very different." "Nope, NOPE!" "And I don't want you to learn about it from PORN!"

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: According to legend, God abandoned the world fifteen years prior, and thus people are no longer able to give birth and cannot find rest after death unless buried by a mythical "gravekeeper." The protagonist, twelve-year-old Ai, is one such gravekeeper for her tiny, isolated village. After tragedy strikes her village, she resolves to set out on a journey to save the world God has abandoned, and along the way she makes new friends and discovers how humanity has adapted to this slowly dying world. Despite the bleak premise, it's actually a rather hopeful series, and I loved Ai's journey and the relationships between her and her companions, and I also really love the canon's setting, as it's both beautiful and haunting.

FANDOM NAME: Cesare - Il creatore che ha distrutto

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: If you like historical fiction, if you're into the Borgias, if you like extremely well-researched stories AND gorgeous artwork, as well as heartbreaking character-development, this is the thing for you! So far 12 volumes, it's picked up again after a lengthy hiatus (and then another one) and is planned to wrap up at 30 vol.s - I hope I'll live to see that! So far we've covered: lots of childhood backstory for Cesare Borgia and Miguel de Corella, as well as their time at the university of Pisa in the years 1491 and 1492 up to the conclave that'll see Rodrigo Borgia come out as Alexander VI.

WHERE CAN I FIND IT (optional): "Morning" magazine/Kodansha and Japanese tankoubon. There used to be English language scanlation groups (Vinland, ETC) but right now you're clearly at an advantage if you can read Italian (Star Edizioni, current up to vol 12) and French (Édition Ki-Oon, current up to vol 12).

The canon is, basically, HISTORY, although the mangaka takes some interesting liberties with the material. The depth of cultural, social, and political detail covered here is stunning. If the TV series dwelling on the Borgia were not your cup of tea - this might be just the thing for you. There's a deep love of the Renaissance at work - as well as excursions into political theology, and what it means to have power.

I'm in rapture over Cesare/Miguel, but there's a whole lot to be said for Miguel/Angelo as well (Angelo is an ingenue who entered university on the Medici ticket and is taken under Cesare's (and Miguel's) wing, in a way... Parts of the narrative are driven by Angelo's being drawn into the Borgia circle, and his wide-eyed fascination...). Watch Lorenzo de' Medici, Giovanni de' Medici (future pope Leo X), Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Raffaele Riario, and many more take shape and come to life like you've never seen them before.

Jacqueline Kirby - Elizabeth Peters

[personal profile] graycardinal 2021-09-19 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)

What It Is

A short series of mysteries by the late and much-loved Elizabeth Peters, best known for her tales of Amelia Peabody Emerson and family, the greatest Egyptologists of this or any other century. Jacqueline is initially a librarian and later a novelist by trade, though none of the books are set in or around a library.

Why It's Worthy

My very first Elizabeth Peters heroine was Jacqueline Kirby, by way of The Murders of Richard III. She and I are both serious about books, enthusiastic about Shakespeare, amused by the eccentric ways of professional writers, and not at all hesitant to jump in at the deep end of the pool when our enthusiasms warrant. Fortunately, though, I have not adopted Jacqueline's habit of falling into the orbits of actual murderers.

It should be noted that there's some variation in tone between the books. Seventh Sinner is very early Peters in which she hasn't yet fully developed the sharply acerbic wit that became her trademark (it's there, but it's not dominant), and Naked Once More dials it back a bit, so that the novel reads in some ways more like the author's works as Barbara Michaels. By contrast, Die For Love and Murders of Richard III are much more snark-filled.

Where To Find It

I believe all of these are still in print:

The Seventh Sinner - set in and around Rome
The Murders of Richard III - a classic country-house whodunit
Die for Love - a romance-writers' conference in NYC
Naked Once More - involves a sequel to a long-vanished writer's iconic bestseller

Prompts & Possibilities

A number of obvious questions arise that deserve thoughtful and entertaining answers: What happened to the (never seen) father of Jacqueline's (likewise never seen) now-adult children? Have any of her kids inherited her sleuthing gifts? What are the legendary origins of The Purse? What has she written beyond what we've seen (is there a series character)?

I’m also fascinated by Jacqueline's ability to charm without being charmed, as it were. She ends several of her adventures with a man in tow who is then Never Seen Again, and insofar as we know, she's still on speaking terms with most of them. I am intrigued that this works; show me how she does it. And then there's casefic: in her first outing, Jacqueline is more or less the guest sleuth in someone else's story – it would be entertaining and satisfying to see a further adventure of that kind.

Extremely Optional Bonus Points

I have for years held the private theory that Jacqueline could very well be the unnamed editor of the Emerson papers forming the basis of the Amelia Peabody series. (It really can't be Vicky Bliss; John doesn't seem to have inherited that particular archive.) A story riffing on that theory would be totally welcome...and if Jacqueline should encounter Vicky and John in the course of her editorial duties, one can but imagine the potential for fireworks.
