Artworks in the 2020 tagset

Below is a list of the artwork nominated this year, with links. If I've missed anything, or if anyone has better links to the art, please leave me a comment.

The Butler’s in Love - Mark Stock (Painting)
The Butler’s in Love
Characters:
The Butler (The Butler's in Love - Painting)

Since the nomination is just for ‘painting’ singular, I assume it refers to the 2009 painting I linked. There do, however, seem to be at least 3 other works by the artist with the same or similar title, as well as other images on the same theme: Other Images

ETA I've found the nominator's letter, and it looks like it was indeed meant to be the whole series. Have a relevant twitter thread.

The butler is so yearning! Who is he aching for? His master, or maybe the young woman the master is courting, or someone else on the household staff...the possibilities are endless. The body language in these pictures is so great! The way he takes a quiet moment to feel his human feelings before facing the world again. The fact that he has to see the object of his affections but play his role without giving away his feelings is so moving. [[personal profile] sophia_helix]
The Cardsharps - Caravaggio (Painting)
The Cardsharps
Characters:
Black Feather Cardsharp (Caravaggio)
Innocent (Caravaggio)
Pink Feather Cardsharp (Caravaggio)

I have spent quite some time staring at this painting and have come to the conclusion that this one works as a story any way you slice it. The two cardsharps out fleecing rich young innocents but fucking each other? Yes. One of the cardsharps with the innocent while the other either pines or acts as wingman? Absolutely. The two cardsharps deciding they’d rather take the innocent’s innocence than his money? I am totally here for it. All three teaming up in every way imaginable? Do you even need to ask? Turns out the innocent is not so innocent and turns the tables? InDEED. [[personal profile] thefourthvine]

Juventus F.C. (Champions League - Northendgirls)

Does anyone have more direct links to the specific art for these characters?
The Christmas Cottage - Thomas Kinkade (Painting)
The Christmas Cottage or possibly The Christmas Cottage

I saw someone's genius observation about how Kinkade's (endearingly awful) paintings always feature houses that look like they're on fire from the inside due to him overdoing it with the lighting. As a horror fan, I got an immense kick out of this observation and immediately decided that I would request Christmas Cottage for Yuletide. [[profile] dreemywierd]
Cordelia (Movie Poster 2020)
Cordelia Movie Poster
Characters:
Man (Cordelia Movie Poster)
Woman (Cordelia Movie Poster)

I'm not sure whether this quite counts as art or not, but since it's just the poster, with no reference to the actual movie, I've included it.

So if you aren't on twitter you might have missed this one entirely, but yesterday (Sept 16) a poster for the movie "Cordelia" dropped and everyone lost their minds for about eight hours because the poster looks like an EXTREMELY horny period drama with femdom. Then we all realized that it's actually a psychological thriller/horror movie and let out a collective groan of disappointment. But that's what's so great about Yuletide! We can write all the fanfic we want about a different universe where this movie is a horny femdom period drama, and no one can stop us! [[personal profile] evewithanapple]

Horror art by Trever Henderson. I love the strange and potentially very dangerous and terrible reaching out and touching mundane human life, I think they are very evocative art pieces, and I have so many questions about them![[personal profile] sushiflop]

The Geefs Brother’s Satan Sculptures
Characters:
L’ange du Mal (The Geefs Brothers' Satan Sculptures)
La Genie du Mal (The Geefs Brothers' Satan Sculptures)

Le génie du mal is a religious sculpture executed in white marble and installed in 1848 by the Belgian artist Guillaume Geefs. The sculpture depicts a classically attractive man chained, seated, and nearly nude but for drapery gathered over his thighs, his full length ensconced within a mandorla of bat wings. Geefs' work replaces an earlier sculpture created for the space by his younger brother Joseph Geefs, L’ange du mal, which was removed from the cathedral because of its distracting allure and "unhealthy beauty".

Naiya and the Foxdragon/Foxdragon Series
Foxdragon website (sign up to the mailing list to get the first chapter of the book; prints free to view online)

It combines a fairly classic story of a girl on an adventure with her magical buddy with fascinating bits of worldbuilding and incredible illustrations. The expanded universe is all art, and it's both beautiful and provides some fascinating background on the world. The setting is a fantasy world inspired by the author's childhood in Indonesia; the foxdragons are an interesting take on classic mythological creatures. [[personal profile] raininshadows]
Night Sun Tarot Deck
Characters:
Knight of Wands (Night Sun Tarot)
Page of Swords (Night Sun Tarot)
Three of Pentacles (Night Sun Tarot)

Night Sun is a very dark, intricate deck. Most of the cards have images of people/beings, which make for great characters, and the imagery combined with the hierarchical structure of the deck make for fantastic worldbuilding opportunities. I personally envision the Major Arcana as deities, with the suits of the Minor Arcana as opposing kingdoms. [[profile] shadow_lover21]
The Sea Witch - Adrien Amilhat (Painting 2017)
The Sea Witch
Characters:
The Sea Witch (Amilhat Painting)

Is she a witch? A ghost? A goddess who watches over the fishing boats in storms? Or is she manipulating the waves into fishing nets for herself? Whats her story? This one's new to me, I saw it when I went on the Narrative Painting site to check the dates of the Menzel painting and I haven't been able to stop thinking about her ever since. [[personal profile] deep_dark_waters]
Something Familiar - Peter de Sève
Something Familiar
Characters:
Black Cat (Something Familiar)
Witch (Something Familiar)
Spirit - George Roux (Painting 1885)
Spirit
Characters:
Ghost (Roux Painting)
Man (Roux Painting)

Look at it! I love the look of the painting almost as much as I love that there's no real consensus about what's going on, and if you ask ten different people to look at it and propose a story you'll get ten different ideas. Has she come back because she loves him? Is she back for revenge because he killed her? Is she some unknown lady haunting his house plinking the piano while he's trying to work? Is he a writer and he's somehow managed to conjure the character from his novel? Does she belong in one of those paintings on the wall but sometimes steps out to wander around the house? Who are these people?? [[personal profile] deep_dark_waters]

The Uninvited Guest pt 1 & 2 - Adolph Menzel (Painting Duology 1844-1845)
The Uninvited Guest (both paintings)
Characters:
Death (Menzel Painting)

Look at Death. What a nice polite well-dressed gentleman. Who pelted him with wine bottles and threw him out the window?! The inscriptions say "Death has arrived" and then "Always such defenders, etc" but we have no idea who those defenders are, whether it's their time and they're throwing a tantrum about it or it's not their time and they're fighting a skeleton for their lives. What kind of power and/or rock hard will do you need to be able to defenestrate Death himself? [[personal profile] deep_dark_waters]

Young Lady With Unicorn - Raphael
Young Lady with Unicorn
Characters:
Unicorn (Young Lady With Unicorn)
Young Lady (Young Lady With Unicorn)

I love the mystery of it. BUT what makes it even greater is the history of the painting: it's full of enigmas, and the different layers of the painting make up for a very cool prompt, if you ask me. When the painting was first uncovered, someone had covered the unicorn during the 17th century by adding clothes and writing material to the painting. Why? We don't know. What is it about that unicorn that needed to be kept secret ? Or is the last layer the last part of the young lady's story? Last but not least, further examination of the first layers of the painting revealed that the unicorn was modeled after a dog. Used to be a dog. I mean, there is a metamorphosis story to be told here, or something of the kind. Is the unicorn a familiar, a daemon of some sort? What about the young lady? Unicorns are often associated with unmarried women, is something up with that? Is she a witch in Renaissance Italy? I'm really fascinated by it, and I think it would make for a great fantasy/magical realism story in a cool historical setting. And the mystery, of course. [[personal profile] dye_ann]
