Mini-Challenge: Cheftide
Thanks to
crantz for the name!
Let's face it. Some characters are good at cooking. Some characters are not good at cooking. Some characters merely need to allow their cooking genius to develop. But all of it makes for great fic!
This year, let's write some cooking for Yuletide. Let's explore all manner and methods of preparing food for consumption, whether it be for humans or space aliens or bears or anything you can think of.
"Cooking", for the sake of this challenge, is defined as broadly as you like to be for any kind of food preparation you would like it to be. Recipes optional, but welcome.
To participate, leave a comment with your AO3 name, your fandoms, and any prompts, and/or put them in your letter as Cheftide prompts. When posting your fic, tag it as Cheftide.

Fandom: Crooked Media RPF
Character: Jon Lovett
Prompt (part of a larger set of prompts): One thing I'd love is references to or a new take on Lovett and Priyanka's cooking "shows" on Instagram! (Chef AU?)

(Anonymous) 2020-10-17 02:24 am (UTC)(link)Fandoms: The Little Stranger - Sarah Waters; The Turn Of The Screw - Henry James; Mary Reilly - Valerie Martin; HBO Rome; Edward Edward - Lolah Burford
Prompts: All of these fandoms are historical fandoms, so please feel free to go hogwild with historical cooking! Elaborate or humble, appetizing or not so much -- Victorian nursery food, beef teas prepared with scrupulous care for your exhausted employer (you know how delicate his disposition is!), Georgian-Regency culinary disasters and agonizing family dinners, WWII-era rationing and postwar British cooking, ancient Roman culinary culture. (Dormice, garum, animal testicles served very rare... and lots of other stuff that's less gnarly but just as memorable.) I love food preparation as an act of love, food preparation as an act of (underappreciated? unseen? misunderstood?) domestic labor, food as medicine, and all the ways everyday material culture manifests itself around cooking and dining.

Prompts: Something about Varice cooking in either a mundane or magical fashion--possibly for a birthday party for one of her friends? Or she takes part in a magical cooking contest in the vein of the Great British Bake Off. Or post-canon after Emperor Mage, she's had enough of court politics and leaves to open up her own restaurant or bakery.

Fandom: Derry Girls • Character: James Maguire
Prompt: James canonically hates fish and chips and other fried food because it's too greasy, but it doesn't seem like his aunt and uncle have much time for cooking – so does he cook? Is he any good? I'd love to see him being surprisingly competent at it (though I can't imagine the girls would ever let him live it down).

Fandom: Seducing the Sedgwicks by Cat Sebastian • Characters: Martin Easterbrook & Will Sedgwick

Fandoms:
Anne of Green Gables books (Anne, Diana)
American Girl: Kit (Kit, Ruthie)
Oregon Trail (any)
Winter Wonderland--Andrews Sisters (Narrator, Love Interest)
Prompts: I really love winter and snow based stories, and Christmas. General likes: baking (Christmas or otherwise), taffy pulls, cleaning off a messy partner, lost and foraging for food and water (with varied levels of actual need and success), kitchen disasters, meaningful recipes being shared/made, elaborate recipes and cocktails, trying something new outside their comfort zone, making and drinking tea or other hot drinks on a cold day.
For Oregon Trail: cooking at the fire with or without its learning curve, picnics, foraging for food and water. DNW "onscreen" death of animals but references to cooking them is fine.

Fandom: Waitress - Bareilles/Nelson
Prompt: The musical's set in a diner cum pie shop and baking figures heavily into the story, so you can wring a lot of fun out of this one if you want to go foodie, especially if you go seasonal. For instance: stories about Jenna and Lulu baking together, everyone getting together to prepare a feast, holiday parties and the work they entail.
AO3 Name: Missy
Letter: https://bring-me-sugar.dreamwidth.org/18682.html
Fandom: Laverne and Shirley (TV)
Prompt: The show is partially set in a brewery and one of two restaurants during its run, so it's easy to have fun with food. The boys are known for their bizarre recipes and the girls have (extremely mediocre) cooking skills as well. Give me Laverne and Shirley taking a cooking class or failing at it, or the boys trying to teach them to cook, or Frank making something special for any of them!

Lip Service: Lexy Price, Sam Murray, Tess Roberts
Obernewtyn Chronicles - Isobelle Carmody: Elspeth, Dameon
Out at the Wedding (2007): Jeannie, Risa
The Kissing Booth (Movies): Chloe Winthrop
Prompts: some of my general likes include chef/bakery/cooking AUs, slice of life and romantic domesticity that involves cooking (most of the ships mentioned in my letter are femslash), cooking as a love language/act of devotion either romantically or platonically, and cooking as a character's creative outlet. For Creature Court I'm also specifically interested in fic about festival days and related worldbuilding or slice-of-life (fantasy canon setting with fictional festivals), and a baking or similar devotion/ritual could fit well with that!

Fandom: Little Women (1994)
Characters: Any
There are a number of food-rich scenes in the movie and book. I'd love for Jo and Friedrich to cook together, or the March sisters. Maybe a young Marmee fussing over her first Christmas dinner?
Fandom: Moonstruck (1987)
Characters: Loretta Castorini, Rose Castorini, Ronny Cammareri
Ronny's a professional baker, so you can have so much fun with trying to figure out why this really intense guy has gotten into a business that requires such preciseness. Loretta and Rose cook a lot, so the two of them comparing notes and complaining as they make dinner would be a lot of fun as well! Maybe Ronny teaches Loretta how to bake? Maybe Rose passes some traditions on to Ronny?

Fandoms:
- Emma (2020) – Emma Woodhouse, George Knightley
- West Side Story (1961) – Anita, Bernardo
- Fiddler on the Roof (1971) – Tzeitel, Motel Kamzoil
Emma (2020)- Either Emma or George secretly likes to cook or bake, even though it’s not really something that people of their class do. They make something for the other person as a gift. Do they tell the giftee they made it? Or wait to see what the giftee will say first?
West Side Story (1961)- Continuing the banter of “America,” Anita is trying out new American recipes on Bernardo. Which ones does he like, and which ones are a big pass?
- (Canon-divergence AU) - Bernardo is only wounded in the fight, and Anita is nursing him back to health. What does she cook for him?
- (Canon-divergence AU) – Bernardo is slowly coming to terms with the idea that Maria’s fancy for this Polish kid just isn’t going away. (It helps that Chino fell in love with someone else; and maybe Tony saved Bernardo’s life, either in the fight or some other way?) He decides to go meet Tony’s mother, because he’s a big believer in family and thinks you can tell a lot about a person from their family, and she feeds him lunch. What does she feed him? How do they connect?
- (Canon-divergence AU) - Maria is a horrible cook. Anita tries to help her learn how to make Tony’s weird Polish food, and Bernardo eats the rejects and laughs at them.
Fiddler on the Roof- The first time Motel and Tzeitel sit down to a meal together in their own home, as husband and wife. It’s nothing fancy (unless Tzeitel has cooked one of Lazar’s chickens!), but Tzeitel has made it for them, and they are ridiculously in love.
- Tzeitel celebrates the new sewing machine by baking something delicious.
- As an only child, Motel was taught how to cook, even though it’s not normally something a boy learns. After Yankele is born, Motel cooks for Tzeitel, and they eat together, while their little miracle snoozes.
- Unlike Tevye with Golde, Motel doesn’t forbid Tzeitel to maintain a relationship with Chava after her marriage to Fyedka. They can’t meet in public, but Chava comes to the house sometimes and she and Tzeitel cook together.
- Food as memory – during their years in Poland, what does Tzeitel cook that brings the nostalgia and homesickness for Anatevka flooding in?
- When they get to America to rejoin Tevye, Golde, and the youngest two, what American dish does Tzeitel or Motel fall in love with and immediately learn how to cook or bake to share with the other?
Thank you for reading this, and I hope you have a really happy Yuletide! :)no subject

Final Fantasy VI - Celes Chere
Cooking fish with Cid on the Solitary Island. Her meals while with the Empire vs the Returners. What does she scrounge up for food during the World of Ruin?
Lovecraft Country - Hippolyta Freeman, Josephine Baker
They're Paris 1920 - think of the food possibilities! Josephine treating Hippolyta to some decadent French cuisine would be *chef kiss*
Monster Prom - any
Any of the characters (and combinations!) having shenanigans in the cafeteria would be A+. Do they raid the kitchen and make their own thing? Do they prompt another food fight or random food competition? Does Liam finally make the perfect Instagram-worthy dish? And does Scott immediately eat it?
Octopath Traveler - Alfyn Greengrass, Primrose Azelhart
With all the different regions and traveling, I'd love to see some cultural cuisine. what new things do they find and enjoy? What do they make for each other that's a delightful experience? What do they do for food while traveling between places?
Princess Mononoke - Eboshi
Eboshi freaking takes on wolf gods to bring rice back to her people - I'd love to see her mingling with them and enjoying the food she worked so hard to bring back. There are lots of solid found family sharing meals moments with her and Iron Town and I'm here for it!
Spiritfarer - Gustav, Stella, Daffodil
THERE IS LITERAL COOKING IN THIS GAME AND CHARACTERS HAVE FAVORITE FOODS AHHHHH. Having Gustav and Stella cook together (and Daffodil "helping", but he's a cat) would be an utter delight, especially when they take the time to make each other's favorite things.

Fandom: A Moveable Feast

-(from People of the Seine) What if one time Hem somehow (E.g. he made friends with a fisherman and he made him try or somehow got his hands on a fishing rod or something) ended up fishing himself and then, instead of going to eat friture a Bas Meudon tried to cook the goujons himself? Extra kudos if you add him and Hadley bickering because of it
-( also Two For One 2020 Challenge) Sort of fusion with Islands in the Stream, there's this part:
“Papa, tell us some more about when you and Tommy and Tommy’s mother were poor. How poor did you ever get?”
“They were pretty poor,” Roger said. “I can remember when your father used to make up all young Tom’s bottles in the morning and go to the market to buy the best and the cheapest vegetables. I’d meet him coming back from the market when I would be going out for breakfast.”
“I was the finest judge of poireaux in the sixth arrondissement,” Thomas Hudson told the boys.
“What’s poireaux?”
“Leeks.”
“It looks like long, green, quite big onions,” young Tom said. “Only it’s not bright shiny like onions. It’s dull shiny. The leaves are green and the ends are white. You boil it and eat it cold with olive oil and vinegar mixed with salt and pepper. You eat the whole thing, top and all. It’s delicious. I believe I’ve eaten as much of it as maybe anyone in the world.”
and I would just love to see more of the A Moveable Feast's Hem dealing with poireaux (And why not, milk formulae and such)

Fandoms: Revolutionary Girl Utena, Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers
For Revolutionary Girl Utena, the cantarella scene is basically perfect to me, but also, given how a lot of Anthy's "cooking" seems to be shaved ice, I'd love to see anything about her and food. Being terrible at cooking on purpose, being terrible by accident, intentionally poisoning people, learning new recipes...anything featuring Anthy and food/cooking would be great!
For Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers, I'd argue the food angle is an intrinsic part of the story, but I'd love a heavier focus- Jen and Aiko cooking together, or Jen and Seo-Yun. Jen's mother's recipes. Anything, really!

I love characters using food to bond or connect, food as comfort both physical and emotional, food as an expression of love. I love seeing people share food with others, experiment with it, and delight in it. I like seeing food as a special memory between people and characters spending time preparing food together as a form of closeness.
Fandom and character(s): Taken Movies (Bryan, Lenore, and Kim).
I rewatched the triology and was struck by how much of the Mills' family time is centered on food. They discuss Paris in a restaurant; Bryan meets Kim's boyfriend over milkshakes; Bryan and Lenore flirt over dinner; Bryan is exonerated in Lenore's death thanks in part to warm bagels. Food-related plots are almost canonical.
I'd love precanon family meals or times where Bryan cooked for the woman in his life. Meals where Bryan and Lenore forge a truce for Kim's sake after the divorce but before canon events. Bryan and Kim reconnecting once he retires over ice cream. Meals shared between Bryan and Lenore set in the time where Lenore is conflicted about Stuart. How often has Lenore come by for flirty dinners or talking things out breakfasts? Birthday, anniversary, or holiday meals.
Fandom and character(s): Highway to Heaven (Jonathan Smith and Jane Thompson)
Note: I know food-related prompts for this fandom are a bit trickier given that canon establishes angels don't strictly need to eat, but you're welcome to either ignore that, or just have them hanging out companionably while food is happening.
In what ways is food a part of their love story? What dishes are particularly special to them? I'm good with more gen takes such as Jonathan offering Jane help with the cooking during Keep Smiling, or Jennifer and Jonathan sharing more intimate meals after they get together as a couple. Breakfasts in bed, beach picnics, snacks shared in front of the fire, preparing meals together.
Fandom and character(s): The Millionaire (Any)
There are so many interesting food-related ways to spend a lot of money. Maybe the beneficiary opens a grocery store in a food desert, or buys out their favorite restaurant and gives the employees better salaries. Or a beneficiary who just really wants cooking lessons and hires a renowned chef as a tutor. Or maybe they take a culinary trip around the world or across just a continent sampling the best everyone has to offer. Or perhaps they do something more outlandish, such as buying lifesized chocolate statues or swimming pools full of jello. Selfless, sensational, silly, or sweet, it would all be fun to read.

Fandoms: Exit/Corners, Coleydoesthings skits (youtuber), Analogue: A Hate Story/Hate Plus, Sims Bustin Out/Urbz handheld/Sims 2 DS, Untitled Goose Game, Insidious
Prompts:
-For Exit/Corners, cooking could be a fun bonding activity for the trio of survivors? Possibly in the giant Thatcher family kitchen, with Nolan sheepishly lurking somewhere? It could also be interesting to tackle Sent and/or Aether trying to create a virtual feast and figuring out how food should taste and such.
-For Coley, the fanfic cafe makes fanfiction like drinks, and we see some of the tech from Fantech Labs works on cooking principles. Show me someone cooking a fic or trying to find the perfect spice blend for a ship or something!
- For Analogue/Hate Plus, the cake thing in 2 is perfect for this! Show me Hyun-ae and the PC chatting while the PC makes a cake! Other options are any of the couples making a meal together/for each other, or Kim So-Yi diving into cooking as an outlet for her scientific interests
-Sims trilogy: Cannonball Coleman calls himself a 'musical chef' and works the food stand in his jazz club in 2. Maybe show me some of his cooking?
- Goose Game: the Goose can easily and delightfully fuck up a kitchen, whether a home cook is trying to make a special dish or a professional/show/TV kitchen gets terrorized
-Insidious: Elise is exactly the sort of woman to make cookies to help calm people down, don't you think? Let her make something warm and comforting while being a psychic badass!

Fandom & Character: Chef RPF - Julia Child
Request details: I would adore literally anything about Julia Child. I would happily read loving detail of Julia cooking just about anything you like. Julia’s trials and tribulations as she learned to cook are also relevant to my interests. Julia hosts a dinner party anytime from 1950 to 2000 – who’s there and what are they eating? Julia's husband, Paul, was a photographer and this Bon Apetit article (https://www.bonappetit.com/story/julia-child-never-before) has some of his pictures of Julia from the early 1950s. I would love a story centered around the pic of the two of them having a romantic picnic for two on a Parisian rooftop. What are they eating and what is the occasion?
