WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: Gamechanger (2019) is a wild ride (with a sequel due out in January). It’s a post-post-apocalyptic novel, set in a future when humanity is trying REALLY HARD to learn from their mistakes, with plenty of pitfalls and bad actors in the mix. There’s a global social network that governs what opportunities you have in life, based on values around service/volunteerism, environmentalism/social welfare and good old popularity. Semi-sentient apps help you manage all of that, and most other aspects of life.
Rubi Whiting was a huge star in massively multiplayer virtual reality games like that for awhile, but she’s trying to settle down into a quieter role as a public defender, helping the low-rated and anti-social climb out of their circumstances and improve. Unfortunately, her new client drags her into a mess of international law enforcement, mysterious deaths, the secret rise of artificial intelligence, and a long-running quiet epidemic of child disappearances linked to an urban legend.
In the process, she winds up entangled with her former rival, Gimlet Barnes, flashy non-binary VR villain-player extraordinaire… who is struggling with the imminent collapse of their group marriage, and their understandably sad and frustrated preteen daughter. Sparks fly between them, but there’s a lot of baggage to contend with, too.
Worth checking out if you enjoy rivals-to-lovers queer romance, conspiracies, virtual/cyber reality, Artificial Intelligence, post-apocalyptic fiction, elaborate worldbuilding, and so on!
