HOLD BACK THE DAWN (1941)

WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: So, like, I don't know if you've met Charles Boyer?

BOYER.

This is a beautiful little melodrama in which Boyer gets to be both a rake and a hero. He's a gigolo by profession, stranded in a Mexican border town, looking for an American woman to marry to get him into the US. Into these unquestionably romantic circumstances stumbles Olivia de Havilland, and love somehow ensues, amongst olives, a hotel full of lovable aspiring emigrants, a suspicious immigration inspector, a Hollywood director, and a busload of schoolchildren on a field trip. Paulette Goddard is along for the ride as well, playing one of her smooth operator roles in inimitable fashion, and trying to seduce Boyer into setting up their old show biz act once he makes it into the States.

Olivia de Havilland passed away earlier this year, and even though she's one of my favorite actresses, and there are dozens of films in which she is brilliant, this was the first one I turned on to celebrate her. She was never more adorable.

The film's not much more than 90 minutes, and it zips along pretty merrily for its genre. The central love story is buoyed by a lot of funny, sweet, and sharp supporting action, including some fun time-capsule-y stuff on immigration in the 40s, in case that floats your boat like it does mine.

WHERE CAN I FIND IT?: It's streaming on ... Peacock? It's free, though! There's also a lovely Lux radio play version on Youtube, with Charles Boyer and Paulette Goddard reprising their roles, joined by Susan Hayward. That gives you a good, if abridged idea of the film's story. If not in the US, you may have luck finding the DVD in your library system.
