It sounds like in order to request or write it, I shoud also read the novel? Would you say that's true?

I wouldn't think so! In Tremblay's own notes he has said both books were more 'inspired by each other' rather than directly, unequivocally related. For the storylines to work they can't actually be in the same universe, and I know for my own requests I'll be asking for plenty that goes against the novel.
