Chromatic Yuletide Challenge 2018
Hello! This is my first time posting a challenge of any kind; I hope I’m doing it right.
The Chromatic Yuletide Challenge was created to promote and celebrate people of color in fanfic, characters and creators.
Text copied, with alterations, from this post by the admin of
dark_agenda
Here are the components, per the post:
To request only or more sources with chromatic creators and/or characters.
To offer to write only or more sources with chromatic creators and/or characters.
To pick only or more prompts with sources with chromatic creators and/or characters when perusing 'dear author' letters or yuletide madness unfulfilled requests.
‘Only' is suggested as an option because the odds of your receiving and writing something that meets the requirements of the challenge are significantly increased if you exclusively request and offer chromatic sources and characters.
The term 'chromatic' is here used as an umbrella definition for 'sourcelander', 'hyphenate', 'diasporian', 'person of colour', 'non-white', while we acknowledge that it has shortcomings. Similarly, we accept that there is a certain flattening in our 'White / Western /Other' terminology.
Tag your fic with 'Chromatic Yuletide', in addition to whatever character-specific tags like 'Muslim character', 'PoC character', 'Latin@ character' etc that will help readers find your fic.
You can structure the challenge to meet what you feel comfortable committing to, and comment here if you’re interested in participating!
Please comment below if you would like to participate in this challenge, and mentioning which components of it you think you might be able to meet!

The Expanse (TV), Jeremiah (TV), A Taste of Honey, Binti, 221b Baker Towers, Rivers of London
AO3 Handle: keerawa It's got a LOT of fandom info and prompts. Have a look if you're considering offering any of these fandoms!
Letter Link: https://keerawa.dreamwidth.org/1587.html
The Expanse (TV): Naomi Nagata, Chrisjen Avasarala,
Amos* Naomi Nagata being intelligent moral, and wildly competent, gen or a Naomi/Camina story which could range from loyalty kink UST to zero-g porn.
* Chrisjen Avasarala - show me what she sacrificed to gain power, or what she does with power once she has it. Gen, Chrisjen & Bobbie, or Chrisjen/Bobbie
* The Wire fusion: How about a story where one or more of my favorite characters from The Wire (Omar Little, Stringer Bell, Bubbles, Kima Greggs) are part of Amos's backstory, growing up in Baltimore, OR are Belters. Naomi/Kima and Omar/Amos both sound amazing.
The Expanse has a fantastic diverse cast! Other nominated PoC include Julie Mao, Alex Kamal, Bobbie Draper and Praxidike Meng. Keep your eyes open for those letters and requests.
Jeremiah (TV): Theo
I am fascinated by Theo. The woman is strong, charismatic, and ruthless. Theo gathered other children, resources, and power. She BUILT a town with its own system of law and commerce. She gained power, and lost it, and regained it. In her own way, she is a visionary, and I would love a story that explores that, and her perspective on the world. Please write me Theo/Erin or gen.
Kurdy Malloy is another great PoC character nominated, so look for him in requests.
A Taste of Honey - Kai Ashante Wilson: any
This is a m/m fantasy/romance/horror novella where almost all of the characters are black. If you haven't read it yet, I strongly recommend it! Most of my prompts focus on Aquib, the innocent young nobleman who becomes fascinated with a dashing foreign soldier. He has to decide whether to follow his heart, or the dictates of his culture and family. I've got a slew of gen, slash, and world-building prompts in my letter.
Binti series - Nnedi Okrafor: Binti
This is an award-winning Afrofuturism novella series. The three novellas are a very fast read! It is a truly different imagining of humanity's future in a galaxy full of strange, terrifying, and wondrous other species. Binti is a genius mathematician, the first from her people to ever leave the planet to attend Oozma University. I have a variety of gen, het, and xeno prompts for her in my letter.
Mwinyi is from a different tribe, and Okwu, the other nominated character, is an alien. The three of them have a wonderful found family dynamic.
221b Baker Towers: Sherlock Holmes
This is a Tumblr-based, crowd-sourced fan adaptation of Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, with Sherlock and John as young black British men growing up on a council estate in London. You can find some of the fic, art, and meta created for it here: http://221b-baker-towers.tumblr.com. I would love all kinds of dark-fic for this fandom, Sherlock&John, Sherlock/John, or Moriarty/underage Sherlock. Check my letter for prompts.
The entire point of this canon is that all of our characters are PoC. I see John as an Afghani immigrant. Cast them as you like, and run with it.
Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch: Sahra Guleed, Peter Grant,
Molly,Thomas NightingaleMost of you are probably familiar with this urban fantasy of a young police constable who gets recruited to work on the secretly-magical cases of London. His mother is from Sierra Leone, and the canon has Peter commenting frequently on what it's like, being a black cop in London. Sahra is a 'Muslim Ninja' who works her cases in hijab, and kicks serious ass. I've got a bunch of prompts for them in my letter, mostly plotty gen with a handful of prompts that lean into sex or relationships. If you are inclined to write me case-fic, or an exploration of what community policing means to the fae and magical community who have a deep distrust of the Folly, I would love to read it.
Of the 15 other nominated characters in this fandom, the majority are PoC. There are currently 8 letters on the app and 27 requests in the summary, so if you start reading the series you'll have lots to look forward to this Yuletide!
