2018: Swap! in the Name of Yuletide || SIGN-UPS ARE OPEN.
If you are new to swaps, or to Yuletide, and curious: FAQ here. If you are old to swaps, read on!
YULESWAPS 2018 SCHEDULE:
+ Sign-up forms are open now and will close on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 9:00 PM PDT. Click here for a countdown, as always! Tell your friends! Tell your enemies! Tell yourself to set a reminder on your phone!
+ Match-ups will go out in late October, personal life and technology permitting. Probably over a 2- or 3-day period, because of mail merge sending limits.
+ This year's SENDING DEADLINE (for now) is Monday, November 12, 2018. Before signing up, please do a reality/calendar check to make sure you will have the money and time!
REMINDERS, ALWAYS REMINDERS:
+ Swaps Central: our all-in-one check-in form! You remember it. Still a thing.
+ Email: if you are new, we strongly suggest emailing us at yuleswaps at gmail dot com, just so your email will know we're not spam when we send match-ups.
+ DW/LJ: we will post here after match-ups go out, so everyone knows they definitely did. Please see the FAQ for instructions on how to track the various yuleswaps tags!
+ Sign-ups: PLEASE read instructions carefully, and take particular care not to typo your AO3 name or email! There's always someone whose poor sender is like, "gmail.co????" #yes really
+ Defaulting: look. If anything untoward (money, anxiety, life) should happen to you AT ANY POINT in the swapping process, please don’t just disappear. Tell us, and we’ll work it out! Promise. We are very nice.
And now...
Swap! in the Name of…
CANDY || BOOKS || DRINKS
Questions? Comments? First check out the FAQ, and then, if that doesn’t sort you, feel free to comment either here or there, or email us at yuleswaps at gmail!

That said, THANK YOU SO MUCH for all your hard work each year. This is my favourite Yuletide part!

Also, I don't know how I'd make it so that everyone didn't have to land on every page/it wasn't DEEPLY annoying for me to write (e.g. currently, to look at pages 2 and 3 of the bookswap form, I have to fill out page 1 in the preview thing every time I edit something). *thinking emoji* Unless it was just, like, an EXTREMELY long one-page form, which seems inelegant on your end. And then I wouldn't be able to control, like, what was required and not. *more thinking emojis*
Anyway, if you know somebody who's interested in being the swaps coding person, send them my way. Until then, most likely it's going to stay three sign-up forms.
Also, to be honest, people are bad at stuff/things happen, and I GUARANTEE YOU despite all these warnings someone's going to typo their information, and when that happens it's kind of nice for me to be able to check the other swap they signed up for and be like "ohhhh!" l o l.
ETA: Speaking of "things happen," hahahaha, thanks for the note on the c&p error in the drinkswap form. I edited it. I wonder if that'll fuck up the response spreadsheet? I've never touched a form after opening it before. Guess I'll find out!
ETA2: It WOULD also be nice to be able to like archive/edit people's past preferences and info. But again, not sure how without investing a ton of time to figuring it out. If anyone should pass by here and have an idea... :D

(Anonymous) 2018-10-12 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)I'm fine giving my address since my shipping address and apartment address vary, but has anyone not given their real name? I'm cautious about linking my real name in any capacity to my AO3 account.
Second, how many people do you have sign up for homemade treats? Curious because I bake non-stop from November to January and would be super interested in that aspect of it.

Our sign-up form doesn't ask for your real name, only your AO3 name. So it's really up to you what you want to give (to your sender, not to us!), provided a package can get to you. Sometimes postal services get picky about delivering to a name that's not the name on the mailbox? But that's your judgment call to make.
Homemade goodies: that's great! We typically get lots of people who are willing to receive homemade sweets, including baked goods. I wouldn't necessarily endorse sending ONLY baked goods, since it is technically candyswap? but I definitely know of people who have sent some baked goods, as well as homemade candy, which is always a delight. Also, of course, homemade goods need to be sealed well and mailed quickly, and some recipients may need a list of ingredients (for safety, in case of allergies or whatever).

I've signed up for candyswap and can't wait to get shopping for sweet treats!

Your sign-up looks all good, provided it's correct that your two email handles are almost the same but one letter different (before the domain, obv)?

I do prefer not to constantly re-match people to the same people (though occasionally people have requested it if they really enjoy each other :)), but it's kind of too much for me to go back and check who's had whom before, after all these years. However, I'm very aware this happens, so there IS space in the sign-up sheet to tell me who you had last year and that you'd like to change it up.
I do tend to make particular effort to check who non-US people had last year, if I'm matching them in-country, because of the odds. But sometimes there just aren't enough people. Like, I'll get literally only one Canadian who wants to send in-country only, and I'll match them to the one Canadian who offered in-continent only, and since they're both longtime swappers they'll probably have had each other in one direction or the other at some point. :| I tend to match geographically limited people together, because often other people in that country REALLY want somebody far away, and it seems unfair to ask them to send to the far reaches of the globe and then receive from, like, the next town over. So to speak.
Which is all to say, I can definitely make an effort to give you different people than last year/previous years, but depending where you are and who else signs up, you might have to match out of the country. You can tell me on the sign-up sheet what your preference would be! Also, please give me the AO3 names of the people you'd like to NOT get. :)

FYI, if you are a person sending from non-US to US who is worried about whether your stuff will be seized by customs, and you are willing to wade through some rather complex tables, the USDA has their manuals for what you can/can't send publicly available.
Of particular interest might be the Miscellaneous and Processed Products Manual, which covers stuff like teas, tisanes, and dried fruit. Or you can shoot me a PM, as I actually do this stuff for a living. "Inspect and Release" means you're good. And if what you're sending doesn't show up in the manual (e.g. chocolate bars), you're also good.

Not a stupid question at all! We get it often, ranging from "accidentally missed YT sign-ups this year" to situations more like yours. I almost always say yes, especially if it's somebody who's swapped successfully in the past. Obviously I'm not looking to open swaps up to the ~wide world, but for the most part, it's the spirit of the thing. <3
Which is to say: come play! But sign up soon, because I'm closing them tomorrow night.
(Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner; was out in the world.)

Alsooooo I totally just uh almost nearly forgot to sign up haha. I was going to sign up earlier but had brain fart and then went "oh shit when's the deadline ... six minutes okay I can type fast" 🤪
I'm nuts

1) I actually haven't closed them yet/might have totally forgotten if not for this email notification, because like...I opened some windows to deal with swaps stuff --> promptly got distracted by random Times articles (about sports???? so unlike me) --> was inundated by texts from a friend --> then my Sox won the pennant and will be going to the Series, so there shall be NO MORE FOCUSING OF ANY KIND TONIGHT!!!! (wow, this series of events really makes it seem like I am a person who spends a lot of time on sports...things... which, I assure you, I am not) --> focus issues evidenced by the fact that I just spent like 15 minutes typing this paragraph.
2) GUESS WHO HASN'T SIGNED UP FOR SWAPS YET? ME. I guess I should maybe do that before I close them.
3) I think yulechat is mainly on Discord now? I'm in the #wordwars window a lot but not the other ones much. It's nice in there, though! Though it's sometimes a lot, notifications-wise. I think I've muted a lot of channels out of necessity, haha, because I have it on my phone and otherwise that thing would just be buzzing nonstop, and nothing (swaps or otherwise) would ever get done. ;)
4) You're not a weirdo! I mean, unless you want to be/no more than the rest of us, I imagine. See you around...!

2) yay swaps, swaps are awesome
iii) ack I've never used discord :( I am such a dinosaur. Rawr.
fork) everyone in yuletidedom is weird, I'm pretty sure. Normal is boring.
no subject
lol, I had never used Discord before maybe last year? you'll figure it out!

Also, I may have signed up for all the swaps. Um. But I have a wonderful new job and I Can, so I Did! :D
