Artworks in the 2018 Tagset

Below is a list of the artwork nominated this year, with links. If I've missed anything, or if anyone has better links to the art, please leave me a comment.

I'm also making a series of comment threads, one for each art fandom, and I encourage anyone who is interested to do a quick bit of fandom pimping in the relevant thread. What sort of prompts might you be interested in? What interests you about the art?

↓↓↓ New Addition ↓↓↓
An Uninvited Guest - Adolph von Menzel
An Uninvited Guest
Characters:
Death (Menzel Painting)

This was hiding in the Books & Literature section and I missed it. I assume the painting meant was the one I have linked, which bears the correct title, although it is also possible the nominator had in mind the paired set of An Unwelcome Guest and An Uninvited Guest. See brief discussion at Gurney Journey.
Auguste Toulmouche - Works
La fiancée hésitante | The Hesitant Betrothed (Auguste Toulmouche)
Le Fruit Défendu | Forbidden Fruit (Auguste Toulmouche)

La fiancée hésitante: A previous requester:

This girl does not look hesitant to me! She looks like she's plotting something sinister and her friends (bridesmaids?) are encouraging her.
[[personal profile] hurricanemack]

Le Fruit Défendu: tumblr post about the painting. And a comment from last year's nominator:

Basically what I was thinking when I nominated this was, "Five minutes before the lesbian orgy."

But they could be looking at science textbooks, they could be laughing at things Proper Young Ladies were not supposed to find funny, they could be researching for their slash fics. It's the cheerful, collegial attitude toward getting past society's limits on what they're supposed to be accessing that's the draw, and that feels very relevant to fandom - the two girls leaning against each other and reading, the smirking girl in the back (with the key to the book cupboards, maybe? It's hard to see. Or maybe she's going to go tell on them.), the girl on the ladder who's looking worriedly over her shoulder but isn't going to let that stop her.

And of course there's also their potential future suitors referred to in the quote from a critic in the linked tumblr post, who may get something of a surprise on the wedding night...

Chéri Hérouard - Works
Chéri Hérouard
Characters:
La Pêche Aux Sirènes (La Vie Parisienne cover 21 June 1919) (C. Hérouard - works)
La Ruse d'Une Sirène (La Vie Parisienne 1921) (C. Hérouard - works)
La Sirène et La Parisienne (La Vie Parisienne cover 19 August 1918) (C. Hérouard - works)
La Sirène/La Saison A Potinville-Sous-Mer (La Vie Parisienne 1922) (C. Hérouard - works)

Chéri Hérouard painted a whole series of mermaids for La Vie Parisienne, characterised by their playful, elegant style and how clearly the personality of the mermaids comes through. Adopting fast to the modern world, many of them are fascinated, or possibly obsessed, by legs and feet and shoes, and they are generally found either hanging out with each other, or gazing longingly at smartly dressed young women.
[[personal profile] calycanthe]

Basically, your go-to fandom for lesbian footfetishist french mermaids.
Elements - Experiments in Character Design - Kaycie D.
Chlorine (Elements Character Design)
Helium (Elements Character Design)
Lead (Elements Character Design)
Thallium (Elements Character Design)

What it says on the tin - character designs for each element.
The Garden Door - William Bruce Ellis Ranken
The Garden Door
Characters:
Man in a Grey Suit (The Garden Door - Ranken)
Man in a Hat (The Garden Door - Ranken)
Man With Flowers (The Garden Door - Ranken)

tumblr post about the painting, as referenced by the original nominator several years ago. (It's tumblr - there's not much text. The original quote is "i assume the two dudes in jackets are pissed because they bought flowers for the jacketless dude at the same time and the jacketless dude is like *turns to the camera like he’s on the office*")
good luck roomba witch - ofsparrows (Artwork)
good luck roomba witch
Characters:
Fox Familiar (good luck roomba witch)
Roomba Witch
Shopvac Witch
Vacuum Witch
Hilda the Plus-Sized Pin-Up - Duane Bryers (Illustration Series)
Hilda illustrations
Characters:
Hilda (Plus-Sized Pin-Up)

A fluffly red-head living life with no fraks to give
[[personal profile] wiccanslyr]
Horror Muppets
Horror Cookie Monster

The Muppets. Have gone wrong. How did someone lead Cookie Monster to the dark side...?
[[personal profile] emperor]
Killers Kill; Dead Men Die - Annie Leibovitz
Killers Kill; Dead Men Die
alternate link (with text)
Characters:
The Aristocrat (Killers Kill; Dead Men Die)
The Heiress (Killers Kill; Dead Men Die)
The Maiden Aunt (Killers Kill; Dead Men Die)
The Restless Wife (Killers Kill; Dead Men Die)

Stills from an imaginary film noir with a quite incredible cast (the requested characters are portrayed by Helen Mirren, Kirsten Dunst, Judi Dench and Diane Lane).
Leonora Carrington - Works
And Then We Saw the Daughter of the Minotaur (Leonora Carrington)
The House Opposite (Leonora Carrington) (close-up)
How Doth the Little Crocodile... (Leonora Carrington)
Operation Wednesday (Leonora Carrington)

A surrealist focused on magical realism and alchemy, Carrington's work is a mine of potential stories.
Medieval Manuscript Illustrations
Barnacle Goose (Medieval Manuscript Illustrations)
Battle Snail (Medieval Manuscript Illustrations)
Medieval Penis Tree (Medieval Manuscript Illustrations)

If the nominator wants specific example linked (rather than the current general selection), please leave me a comment and I'll add them in. (Actually, if anyone has a favourite example, I'll add that in too.)
Microsoft Office Danshi
Microsoft Office Danshi
Characters:
Microsoft Excel (Microsoft Office Danshi)
Microsoft OneNote (Microsoft Office Danshi)
Microsoft PowerPoint (Microsoft Office Danshi)
Microsoft Word (Microsoft Office Danshi)
Night Sun Tarot Deck
Knight of Wands (Night Sun Tarot)
Page of Swords (Night Sun Tarot)
Three of Swords (Night Sun Tarot)
Three of Pentacles (Night Sun Tarot)

Quote from a previous year:

Night Sun is a very dark, intricate deck. Most of the cards have images of people/beings, which make for great characters, and the imagery combined with the hierarchical structure of the deck make for fantastic worldbuilding opportunities. I personally envision the Major Arcana as deities, with the suits of the Minor Arcana as opposing kingdoms.
[[profile] shadow_lover21]
Omar Rayyan - Works
Father Grumbler (Omar Rayyan)
The Favorite (Omar Rayyan - Works)
Gin and Tonic (Omar Rayyan)
Lady in Furs (Omar Rayyan)
The Morning After (Omar Rayyan)
The Shepherdess (Omar Rayyan - Works)
The Socialite (Omar Rayyan - Works)
Spanish Mackerel (Omar Rayyan - Works)
Tea in the Tempest (Omar Rayyan - Works)

Actually beginning to build up a tiny fandom, Rayyan's work offers pet monsters, fascinating underwater worlds, intriguing women, wide scope for worldbuilding, some great potential for character building, and the jumping off point for some surreal plots.
Piazze d'Italia - Giorgio de Chirico
About Giorgio de Chirico
Previous requester's letter (The letter is the best place I've found for seeing the relevant art.)

Quote from the letter linked above: I would love to see what kind of story can be inspired by these paintings and their peculiar mood. The stillness of the landscape, a tower looming in the background, trains or sails carrying distant travellers, a heavy sky. An opaque reality. What meetings take place under those statues, what lies just beyond the borders of the canvas?
Full-on classic surrealism is very much welcome, complete with a healthy, heavy sense of mystery.
Portrait of Gerlach Flicke and Henry Strangwish - Gerlach Flicke (Painting)
Portrait of Gerlach Flicke and Henry Strangwish
Characters:
Gerlach Flicke (Portrait of Flicke and Strangwish)
Henry Strangwish (Portrait of Flicke and Strangwish)

Further details on Flicke (the painter) and Strangwish (the pirate).
Shadowscapes Tarot
Death (Shadowscapes)
The Emperor (Shadowscapes)
Knight of Cups (Shadowscapes)
Knight of Swords (Shadowscapes)
Knight of Wands (Shadowscapes )
Nine of Swords (Shadowscapes)
Queen of Cups (Shadowscapes)
Queen of Swords (Shadowscapes)
Queen of Wands (Shadowscapes)
Seven of Swords (Shadowscapes)
The Tower (Shadowscapes)

Quotes from previous years' posts:

I'm into it for pretty fairy boys making out, and the power dynamics possible with the inherent hierarchy of tarot. (Plus worldbuilding, and riding dragons and giant birds!) But there are plenty of different characters to suit a wide variety of fic desires :)
[anon.]

Chiming in for some namespace pimping (I'm pretty sure I'm the anon mentioned above, haha) -- this deck is a gorgeous, gorgeous collection of art. In addition to the specific nominated cards linked above, you can browse the entire deck here:

http://www.shadowscapes.com/Tarot/cardsmain.php?suit=0

Tarot fic's a lot of fun because you can draw from the entire deck for your worldbuilding, look into traditional meanings/symbolism for characterization, or just focus entire on the specific images. The artist's website linked above has accompanying text for each image - for example, the Nine of Swords is Suffering from anguish, fear, anxiety, guilt, uncertainties in the night. (hello, woobie fic ;D)

I'm in it for the slash, but the Queen of Swords and Page of Swords cards both star female characters, so you could mix things up with femslash or het prompts too :)

Basically, consider this deck for Yuletide if you're into:

Beautiful watercolors
Winged people
Birds and foxes and other creatures
Masks
Hierarchies
Occult dreamscapes
Tattoos
Flower symbolism
Elaborate costumes
Decidedly less elaborate costumes

There is so much potential in this series! I really hope to see some stories come out of this nomination (and not just because it's mine)!

Glad my old letter could help - and since I'm not the nominator this year, I'm incredibly happy to see my man Giorgio in the tagset! Wow!

Nope, I tried my three big faves for the past three years but this time I gave art Yuletide a pass nominations-wise (and only nominations-wise! What a beautiful tagset! This post made me add three offers!)... I'll probably do Kay Sage next, or Remedios Varo.
