WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: It’s an award-winning novel from the 60s set in a Norwegian rural community in winter, centered around two 11-year-old girls who inexplicably, almost metaphysically connect with one another, and then are separated. It’s a tale about childhood, the tipping point just before puberty, loss, grief, and community; heavily symbolical, linguistically austere, absolutely beautiful and haunting. To me (and I do wonder if it’s just me or not), it was also about queerness; I doubt the author intended it as such, but I think there is something very queer about this book. I’d love to see it made overt and explored – and isn’t that what fanfic is for?
WHERE CAN I FIND IT? (optional): In a library. On Amazon. Elsewhere, probably. There's a PDF online if you know where to look.
