Possibly worth noting for Twine newbies that the two versions of twine (1.4.2 Sugarcane vs. 2.something Harlowe) have almost completely different syntax, so if you're Googling for help on how to do something, definitely specify which one. Also, if you're doing Twine 2, I'm told that clearing your cookies will destroy your work unless you've backed up/exported beforehand, so be careful!
Additionally complicated by the fact that there are more versions--the one I'm familiar with for 1.4.2 is SugarCube (use 2.0) for use with Twine 1.4.2, which enables some nifty things. If you're using SugarCube, there are some converted macros that will let you do neat tricks, plus add-on macros [search for "add-ons"] that you can include for other special effects.
If you're using "regular" 1.4.2 Sugarcane, there are also add-on macros here and here for special effects.
Please note, you don't need to add macros. They enable certain tricks that can be fun to play with, but you can code a perfectly functional Twine game without them.
(If you're using Jonah or something else, sorry! I'm sure there are resources but I'm not personally familiar with those variants.)
