Not every story is pleasant. Not every story has a happy ending, and not all happy endings come without a dark and painful journey. And sometimes, those are the kinds of stories that we really, really want to read.
If you're one of the many people interested in either writing or receiving darkfic or horror, then Crueltide is here to devour your soul for you!

Why Crueltide?
Because darkfic isn't to everyone's taste. By making it easier to identify darkfic prompts and people open to receiving darkfic in yuletide, we can all indulge our preferences without placing undue pressure on our assigned writers or risking gifting unwelcome fics to our recipients. (And also: the name was the least cutesy of those being thrown around in 2014.)
What is darkfic?
Depends on your definition. But here's a (non-exhaustive) list of darker tropes to get you started:

No! Not at all. Just because a story is packed with darkfic tropes doesn't mean there's no light at the end of the tunnel. Also, just because you like one trope, it doesn't mean you like all of them. Feel free to specify your do-not-wants alongside your wants.
Great, how does it work?
-- If you end up writing a darkfic story, just tag it with Crueltide when you upload it to the collection, and that'll help readers find more of what they like. It would also be good to tag any particular tropes you've used, to help readers find/avoid them. That's all you need to do! If your recip requested dark or horror fic but didn't comment on this post, you can still tag it with Crueltide if it fits the theme! Wanted tropes: Is it a copout if I say "canon typical?" Tsukihime has a lot of supernatural horror elements, gore, medical abuse, child abuse (including CSA in backstory), incest, murder, mutilation, and sexual assault. The Eisenhorn series, however, is from Warhammer 40k, and has torture, demonic corruption, authoritarian themes, pyrrhic victories when they win at all, and plenty of major character death, but very little psychosexual content.

Farouk is basically walking Crueltide material — possession, mind control, manipulation, gaslighting somebody from the inside out, trapping someone in a hazy dreamlike gilded-cage prison where they’re subjected to your will with no chance of escape and no way of ending their own life, sexual assault, imprisoning people in tiny claustrophobic coffins, imprisoning people in perverse parodies of their actual RL psych hospital experiences, impersonating people’s loved ones and encouraging their darkest fears and doubts.... all the good stuff. This fandom is an especially good fit for psychological horror, consent issues, false realities and pocket dimensions, doomed time loops, scenarios that initially seem like some kind of AU divorced from canon only for it to become clear it’s another illusion a la the fake!Clockworks in s1.
Cuckoo (2024) (Gretchen Vanderkurt)
Captivity, body horror, mystery goo, freaky deaky xeno bird sex, gaslighting, conspiracies, grief, Ellen Ripley-style facing down the big bad to protect a kid... this film's nominally SF-horror but it's much more weird and offbeat than it is a blood-chilling tale of terror, so there's a lot to play with. I am a huge sucker for gothic horror riffs, horror set in beautiful but geographically isolated locations, sanitarium/health spa/old-timey hotel AUs, maybe an alternate more supernatural/otherworldly take on the film's core mystery?
Peeping Tom (1960) (Mark Lewis)
Where to start with this one, oh boy... even a perfectly mild mannered character study would be pretty bleak given Mark's psyche and whole deal (serial killing women so he can photograph their terrified final moments in a freaky homage to the way his own father used to terrorize him and film it) so I am very open to all of that. I'm interested in fic about the intersection of sex and violence for Mark, the quiet dread of his interactions with women (even women he seemingly likes, like Helen) and the fever dream sleaze of midcentury print culture.

Happy Endings Preferred?: I'd prefer things on the bittersweet side, with at least glimmer of hope or some true hurt/comfort (though I would genuinely love if you go heavy on the hurt, first). Certainly doesn't have to be saccharine though.
Wanted tropes: I love whump, and don't have too many qualms about what kind. Same for angst and exploration of mental health issues (especially if they're tied to canon events). In general, fics that dwell on the long, messy process of recovery from trauma, whether physical or mental, are my absolute favorite.
General darkfic DNWs: Not usually a fan of sexual content so a lot of tropes in that sphere are nopes for me personally. Not a fan of extreme non-consensual body modification either (things like a lingering injury or scar are more than fine though -- even encouraged).

Back to the Future -- There are SO many instances in these movies that could have gone significantly worse for Marty, if exploring one of those sounds like your cup of tea. Murray Mysteries -- It's Modern AU Dracula! There's so much you can do with this one! Do note that it's also the slight exception to my DNW about sexual tropes, with one specific thing to still keep in mind, which is that if you do go that route, I'd like for it to be something exploring the fact that Murray Mysteries' Jonathan Harker is canonically ace (and I prefer ace characters to be sex-repulsed in fic). So basically, if it's involved in any way, he's probably not happy about it.
Rivers of London -- [pokes Thomas Nightingale with a stick] This 100+ year-old wizard can fit so much trauma in him. Maybe it's something about the long trek home in the immediate aftermath of Ettersberg, or maybe it's a case gone wrong in the modern day (with some PTSD triggers, possibly?). We so frequently see Nightingale be the calm, collected one, I'd love a fic that turns that on its head, with another character having to rescue him from a bad situation.
