TransTide 2024

Since trans headcanons and the portrayal of trans characters can be personal for many people, writers might be nervous to write trans headcanons without invitation. This mini challenge is for people to signal that they would love to receive trans headcanons, as well as to showcase their requested fandoms with canon trans characters.

Note that this exchange is open to nonbinary characters as well.

How do I participate?

Fandom: The Thrilling Adventure Hour
Characters: Frank and Sadie Doyle
Details: I'm open to trans headcanons for either or both of these characters! They have strong queer vibes to me, and I'm 100% sure they're both some degree of bi/pan... but I could also see them being trans, and would love to see if anyone has particular story ideas surrounding that possibility.

Fandom: Forsaken Fae series by R. A. Steffan
Characters: Len Greyson and Albigard
Details: The fact that both characters are AMAB and attracted to men is important to their canon story, so I don't feel a headcanon of either being post-transition in the book. However, I could see gender exploration happening post-canon, and wrapped up in exploration of what that means for their sexualities.

Easy version: Keep their canon gender but make them trans that gender! Or declare them nonbinary, with their canon gender being their asab, and use they/them pronouns for them. Then change as much or as little of their presentation makes sense to you! (presentation =/= gender, after all...)

If you'd like to take a canonically male character and make them transfemme, or a canonically female character and make them transmasc, go for it! I'm excited to see how that changes things!

I like characters being casually trans without the story being About Their Transness. (Things like "we should talk about how to have enjoyable sex/kink and one relevant aspect is your transness" or the like are fine; the point is the sex/kink in that case.) I'm not particularly interested in dysphoria being central to a trans character's experience, but I'm fine with it existing so long as your work doesn't wallow in it.

On that note: Include as much/little physical transition as you're interested in! I am into both "I have had enough physical transition that I pass as cis" and "I see no reason to change my body; the social elements are all that matter to me", or anything in between. I also love "I have both a cock and a cunt" and other genderfuck options! Pick whatever makes sense to you for the character(s) and work you wish to create!

Similarly, please use the words for body features (inc. genitalia) that make sense to you for the character(s) you're writing. When in doubt, err on the side of the words being gender-affirming (transmasc characters having dicks/cocks/chests, transfemme characters having cunts/clits/breasts) or clinically descriptive (e.g., vagina, penis). DNW "boypussy"/"bussy" and "click".

When writing kink/sex, you're welcome to show trans characters having PiV sex (I particularly want to see it for trans characters who have had bottom surgery or a magical/sci-fi equivalent!), and also all my general kink/sex likes/dnws apply. I just really want trans characters to have enjoyable sex and kink lives!
Trans-specific kink/sex like: consensual feminization of transmasc characters/masculinization of transfemme characters. aka, gender as kink!

Pronoun-wise, I really love seeing characters use multiple names and pronoun sets, especially when they use different names/pronouns in different contexts/with different people! (I also do not require trans characters to have deadnames. tbh I like it when they don't?) I'm also fine with neopronouns in settings/contexts where they make sense (preferences: ey/em/eir, ve/ver, xie/xir and variations).

Nonbinary characters who use he/him and/or she/her pronouns are welcome, as are agender characters who use it/its. I also really like he/him lesbians! Which isn't precisely trans but is highly related.

ART NOTES: Yes all of the above still applies, yes I want to see surgical scars (especially keyhole/periareolar top surgery!), yes I am here for trans characters having sex, yes I like seeing any amount/stage of transition, yes I'm here for trans characters whose transness is only visible via an author's note saying "btw they're trans."

I'm happy to receive trans headcanons for any of these fandoms. Wylde Flowers has one nonbinary love interest (but I did not request any of the love interest characters). Their Majesties' Pleasure has one or two bit-part nonbinary characters (I did request *any* character, including the bit-part keep guards).

DNWs: Their Majesties' Pleasure and The Saint of Steel are both set in worlds that show no sign of homophobia in canon, so I'd like to see them equally free of transphobia and binarism.

I personally love seeing characters interpreted as trans so would love to receive any fic that has any of my nominated characters as trans, perhaps with an except for Anatomy of a Fall just because I have nominated a twelve year old and a dog (though if you really want to write a trans Snoop fic I’m not going to stand in anyone’s way).

Characters: John Luther, Alice Morgan
Details: John is a character I’ve written as trans myself, and I’ve interpreted him as a trans man who keeps his history very private and is stealth at work and has gone through physical transition and surgery. Of course I’m fine with other interpretations of his gender, that’s just one I tend to fall back on. For Alice I’ve never personally imagined her as trans but it could be interesting to see her as non binary or maybe play about with how she obviously see’s the world differently than others and maybe sees her gender differently too.

Fandom: Hedda Gabler - Ibsen

Details: I adore historical trans narratives and seeing trans characters who don’t have the words to describe themselves but are still trans and play about with gender. I’ve written a little in my letter about Hedda as a masc character and it could be interesting to push that further and play with her gender. I’m also cool with other characters having transgressive gender identities.

Details: I’ve personally written fic interpreting Sam as a trans woman and that’s something that I’d love to see explored by another writer. I also really like how both Sam and Nikki explore their femininity in very different ways, and have written a little in my letter about maybe also interpreting Nikki as trans femme as well.

no character in my requested fandoms is off-limits - I'd be delighted to see a trans (incl. nonbinary) take on any of them! yes, even if the character is the most cis to ever cis, or whatever. trans masc Rusty Ryan? transfemme Debbie Ocean? t4t Danny/Tess? hot shit, I love it. trans masc Assad? or transmasc Carl? tell me more. and so on and so forth.

Dancing Queens (2021) specifically has gender stuff (implied) going on already and I'd love to see something diving deeper into this with one or more characters.

My only DNW would be a nonbinary character automatically going for they/them pronouns. sorry, I know this is the reality for a lot of nonbinary people, but it is not it for me, and I've come to resent how nonbinariness and they/them have taken on some sort of third gender and third pronoun role in a trinary system. that's just the binary system in a trench coat. and that is not it for me. nonbinary characters not giving a fuck about pronouns and sticking to whatever they already had, or mixing it up, is more my speed.

Specifically, I really reaaally love the idea of trans man!Ares; I think it makes so much sense for his character and in regards to his relationship with his dad! I'm also up for trans man Seliph, though unusually I actually really like AMAB nonbinary or transfemme Seliph, too!

Details: This is a bodyswap story, so I'm interested in whether said bodyswap awakened any gender exploration thoughts in Pan. Considering Pan also writes m/m fanfiction... It feels like many people start doing that for trans reasons. I did DNW bashing Pan's canonical super-girly gender expression, but I don't think that has to interfere with identity, and of course teenagers often grow out of these things even if they're not trans.

Charcater: Luc Chantal
Details: Luc's bro-y gender expression feels very put on, so maybe there's not much inner sense of gender there at all? I'll take nonbinary Luc Chantal with or without changes in pronouns. I could go for trans woman Luc as well. Maybe she never noticed because the shape of her body is not about gender, it's about hockey! And she knows plenty of other buff women too.

Those are the specific characters I requested that I had specific trans prompts for. I'm open to other characters being trans, but in general I like it when identity headcanons tie into something in canon somehow, even if it's a very small detail that has a more likely explanation. Because what if it's not the obvious thing, what if instead they're just trans? Also, I prefer stories that take into account the real world and its injustices, which means giving a character a marginalized identity would also affect their story and experience in other ways due to them being less privileged than in canon.

Zale (Saint of Steel) - canonically non-binary: Them, Grace, and Piper either working together on a project, bonding over shared worries, or just having a nice social time. Taking care of, being exasperated by, and/or (lovingly) venting about their favorite paladins, discussing/nerding out about their individual works, trying to solve some sort of problem or case for the Rat (the smooth men project, the prostitution-clerk scheme, or an original one), Zale and Piper helping Grace get her mastery, Grace and Zale helping Piper plan/get ready for his wedding, Grace and Piper helping Zale deal with some sort of estate sale issue.

What Is It?: An 8 episode supernatural teen drama on Netflix about star-crossed lesbians from a vampire family and a vampire hunting family
What Am I requesting?: I really want to see more of this family and their dynamics, and I think that writing one of these characters as trans would be a really interesting way to explore that!

Fandom: Legally Blonde - Hach/O'Keefe/Benjamin

What is it?: The 2003 adaptation the Reese Witherspoon movie. There is a proshot that is available on Youtube.
What am I requesting: A lot of writers portray Emmett as a trans man, and I'd love to see that, but I am also open any other queer or trans interpretation of these characters.

What Is It?: A 2002 musical adaptation of a Julie Andrews film from the 60s
What Am I requesting?: As a comedy from the 1960s, this musical relies a lot on gendered expectations, and I'd love to see those explored more by writing the characters as trans.

Fandom: Roaring Twenties Magic - Allie Therin
Characters: Jade Robbins, Jianwei Zhang, Sebastian de Leon, Wesley Collins | Lord Fine
What Is It?: M/M fantasy 1920s historical romance trilogy that is a spinoff of the Magic in Manhattan series.
What Am I requesting?: Jade is a former spy who usually wears men's suits, and I'd love to see a fic that addresses her relationship to gender, but I'd also love fic where any of the characters are trans!
