Where to find it: You can find it on archive.org, or on streaming services.
What is it, in summary?: Two men try to convince themselves they've committed the perfect murder by hosting a dinner party after strangling a former classmate to death.
(IMDB Summary)
Or...
What if gay people could kill (feat. Jimmy Stewart)?
What do you love about it?: It's a Hays Code movie that got away with a lot of gay. It was adapted from an English play, so the original script had the characters calling each other 'dear boy'. All of that got censored out, while... the rest of the movie remains.
It's also quite a tense thriller, for being set in one room. If you like Hitchcock – great, he made this. If you don't like Hitchcock – great, this isn't like any of his other movies.
Also, for film nerds out there – it's shot in one take (sort of)! They had to change reels every 20 minutes due to technical limitations, but it's disguised fairly neatly. It really feels like a play.
What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Obviously Brandon/Phillip, but also examinations of their relationships with the other characters.
Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: No? But here is a taster.
Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Murder! It's based on the Leopold and Loeb murders. Also discussions of the Ubermensch and Nazi Germany.
