Last Breath - Peter Stark

[personal profile] ageorwizardry 2024-10-18 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
Title:
Last Breath - Peter Stark

Media:
Book

Approx length:
The book as a whole is approximately 300 pages; the chapter that's relevant to my request is approximately 30 pages.

What is it, in summary?:
This is a nonfiction book where each chapter is about a different deadly hazard: hypothermia, drowning, dehydration, altitude sickness, etc., and in each chapter an imaginary character experiences the hazard to illustrate its effects.
I also wrote about it on tumblr here (mine is the last addition to the post), where you can also find the link to the first chapter (which was originally published separately).

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?:
The character I am requesting only appears in Chapter 5: Steller's Last Laugh, or Better Living Through Botany: Scurvy, and she is not the main character of the chapter. For even more brevity, I have transcribed most of the quotes that are relevant to her in my letter!

Alone of all the chapters, this is the only one where the character (Phil is the main character of the chapter) is not actually facing the hazard in question; he is only reading about historical figures who did.

What do you love about it?:
I'm going to talk about why I love Myrna, the character I'm requesting :-D

She knows her ex-boyfriend Phil SO WELL. She gives him Steller's journal, about a voyage of exploration that took place in the 18th century in the same area Phil plans to sail through (and on which many people got scurvy and some of them died)—and, as Phil discovers after working himself into a panic over whether he could already be developing scurvy himself only three days' sail out of Seattle...she also gave him a bottle of Vitamin C "to keep you safe."

She KNOWS what is UP. She knows exactly what he'll do! She's like, you need to know some history about scurvy, and she knows what he's going to do with that information, and she knows he won't have taken any precautions against it himself.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
I don't have a clear idea of what kind of story I want to request; Myrna just makes me happy every time I think of her! So I thought I'd throw this out there and see what someone might want to do with it. :-)

Content warnings:
If you plan to read the book as a whole, be prepared for detailed descriptions of people experiencing various kinds of physical distress, and sometimes dying as a result. (If you want to know which chapters the characters the characters die/survive in, I could post that information!)

The specific chapter relevant to my request is a little different from the rest of the book (From the introduction: "Explorer Vitus Bering's is the only historical death described in this book. The other ten chapters portray invented characters and invented situations that approximate physical reality as closely as possible.") So if you would feel differently reading about actual historical figures who died of scurvy long ago vs. characters actively dying of it in the present day, that could possibly make it easier to read. And if it helps, they do figure out how to treat scurvy with the resources they have access to, so some of them recover and survive!

Media:
Song

Approx length:
3 minutes, 15 seconds

Where to find it:
Stream at the band's Bandcamp (you can stream at least a few times for free)
Lyrics

What is it, in summary?:
A song that didn't originally make the cut for the album All Hail West Texas, but was released as a bonus track on the remastered album.

What do you love about it?:
I recently listened to this song for the first time on a road trip, and I found the whole song, and especially the line "I've got room in my house for you," to be such a beautiful expression of love.

It's also got great lines like:
"For three years I lived next door to the airport
So nothing you can say to me can get on my nerves"

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
The story of the person issuing the invitation and the person they're inviting to "Come and stay with me as long as you like"! The tenderness, the kindness, the welcome, the respite, the healing. (There is also possibly an apocalypse lurking in the second-to-last line of the lyrics? Open to interpretation and fair game to play with!) But mainly I'm here for the people at the center of the song.

Title:
Widow Clicquot (2023)

Media:
Movie

Approx length:
1 hour 30 minutes

Where to find it:
Wherever fine recent movies are sold? (I recently bought it streaming, and it's available on DVD as well.)

What is it, in summary?:
You can get a taste with the trailer!

After Barbe-Nicole Clicquot's husband François dies, she works to keep their dream of making champagne alive.
(...The dream is alive. The champagne is not alive. It's late at night for me and I'm hitting the limit of my editing ability. You get me. :-D)

What do you love about it?:
"You like him."
"Yes. I do."
"I see the way you are with one another."
"Are you jealous?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because I know you love me. And because I believe we must be free to feel whatever we feel, so that we never mistake rebellion for reality. Because I like his company too."
"You like his company?"
"I do."

(I love how much they love each other)

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
I thought we got so close to a threesome! But it didn't actually happen. I would love it if it happened in fanfiction! But really any story focusing on how much each pair between these three characters love each other so much would make me happy, whether or not they all manage to love each other at the same time.

Content warnings:
Spoilers for how François died
That François died of suicide is not revealed until late in the movie, but is central to the whole story.

A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia (1990)

[personal profile] lezridax 2024-10-18 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Title:
A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia (1990)

Media: Movie, originally aired on British TV

Approx length: 107 minutes

Where to find it:
In the U.S., at least, you can watch it on Amazon Prime; it's also available on DVD from Amazon. I know it's available in other countries, but I'm unsure of the exact details.

What is it, in summary?: A sequel of sorts to the 1962 Lawrence of Arabia film, made for its anniversary, that features T.E. Lawrence and Emir Faisal's struggles for Arab independence at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. It also tells the story of the two men's relationship, first forged on the battlefield of World War I, and its ups and downs during that time.

What do you love about it?: Lawrence is played by Ralph Fiennes and Faisal by Alexander Siddig, and the two main characters have a ton of gay subtext (almost-text? they do make it clear that Lawrence was gay) that both the film's narrative choices (and how they differ from real history) and the actors' performances amp up significantly. It's best known for being the film that "made" each of the leads' careers (the film was how Fiennes was pegged for his role in Schindler's List and Siddig for his on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, who is my icon for a reason, haha) but I think it's very worth checking out on its own, among each of their best roles, and a great treatment of that history and the frustration of that deferred dream of decolonization. IMO quite well-done for a made-for-TV production, with solid performances among the supporting cast as well and writing, and even though obviously it's not on the level of the 1962 movie it's a solid followup. I watched it for Siddig's performance in it, but it's a lovely little underrated film that I wish more people who are interested in British period dramas, political dramas etc. would give a shot!

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Honestly, I'd love to see stuff that makes the subtext between Lawrence and Faisal into text. Especially if you also engage with the geopolitics behind the conference and potential futures for them. Their real futures after that point were pretty bleak as well as separate, so I'm fine with "alternate history" takes on where they go from that point forward, or even the conference itself, where things work out a little better; I still think the possibility of if Britain and France hadn't been so selfish and the former colonial powers had been able to achieve self-determination is one of the most interesting alternate histories to explore, given just how many 20th- and 21st-century conflicts that avoids or, at least, significantly reshapes. But I think the romantic potential between the two leads is ultimately what I'm most interested in/what I most expect from fanfiction. I'm also interested in AUs where the social mores are otherwise the same but they're more accepting of homosexuality, that allow the characters to be together openly.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: The film is on the shorter side, so I think it's best to watch the whole thing, though if you know a fair amount about the historical figures in question you can probably fudge it a bit. But watching the whole thing gives you the best sense of the relationship between the main characters (which is not wholly accurate to real history) and the broader geopolitical situation, so that's what I would recommend for what I'd like to see in fic.

Content warnings: There are some period-accurate racist sentiments directed Faisal's way, as well as some nudity. There's some brief discussion of Turkish soldiers sexually abusing Lawrence during the war and you see his scars in one scene. But it mostly takes place at a political conference, so not a lot of other disturbing content.

Robot Dreams (2023)

[personal profile] ageorwizardry 2024-10-18 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Title:
Robot Dreams (2023)

Media:
Movie

Approx length:
1 hour 42 minutes

Where to find it:
Wherever fine recent movies are sold (Recently out on DVD in the US!)

What is it, in summary?:
Trailer!
In 80s New York City, Dog makes a robot friend. They love each other. They lose each other. And life still keeps happening, so they live it.

What do you love about it?:
When I saw this in May, I walked out of the movie theater saying "This is an animated movie with no spoken dialogue, and it may be the most emotionally complex thing I watch all year." And that is still true.

For me, it's about how life isn't all good or all bad, and the good and bad don't cancel each other out either—instead it's all true, and it all adds up together in ever-increasing layers of complication. You may have to live with something terrible that you can't do anything about. Even in the midst of a terrible situation, there can still be spots of joy. You can try and fail and have to keep trying—or give up on that and try something different.

I fear this may all sound terribly trite and cliche when I try to type it out. If it does seem that way, please know that doesn't reflect the actual artistry of the movie! Just my capability at describing it.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
More! More like the source! Something that captures the same emotional mix as the movie (or maybe shades a tiny bit happier) would be lovely.

Content warnings:
There's nothing gory, but Robot does suffer some violence at one point, after also being immobilized for an extended time.

Title: Small Gods of Calamity by Sam Kyung Yoo

Media: Novella

Approx length: 150 pages

Where to find it: Available in paperback and ebook.

What is it, in summary?: A horror novella, in which "a parasitic, soul-eating spirit worm has gone into a feeding frenzy, but all the Jong-ro Police Department’s violent crimes unit sees is a string of suicides. Except for Kim Han-gil, Seoul’s only spirit detective. He’s seen this before. He’ll do anything to stop another tragedy from happening." (Excerpt from official blurb.)

What do you love about it?: The characters: Kim Han-gil, who has psychic abilities, is bi and ace. He’s grumpy, rude, introverted, and an outcast among his peers. His latest case, investigating a seeming suicide (actual spirit-worm possession), forces him into contact with Shin Yoonhae, a messed-up, tightly self-controlled man with whom he has a fraught and traumatic past.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: ace m/m relationship fic, future fic, outsider POV fic from the perspective of Kim Han-gil's new partner, case fic.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: not really

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): spirit possession (including of a trans character), parents being transphobic, child ghosts, possibly some other things along those lines.

Title: 김과장 | Good Manager (2017)

Media: Korean drama

Approx length: 20 hour-long episodes

Where to find it: Netflix

What is it, in summary?: Redemption drama set in a corporate office in Seoul. A brilliant but crooked accountant from a small town gets a job in a big corporation, intending to embezzle enough money to emigrate. He ends up uncovering corruption and joining forces with the rest of his department -- and going head-to-head with the arrogant new CFO.

What do you love about it?: The humour, the chemistry between the leads, and the ensemble. Kim Seongryong, the accountant, is a glib, mischievous chaos monster who accidentally finds himself on a path to redemption. Seo Yul, the CFO, is rude, isolated and angry. They're both used to being the smartest person in the room, and they quickly become nemeses.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: ship fic, bickering, future fic.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Not really.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): several kidnappings, some violent union-busting, and a couple of attempted murders disguised as suicides.

Title: 당신이 잠든 사이에 | While You Were Sleeping (2017)

Media: Korean drama

Approx length: 16 hours (32 half-hour episodes)

Where to find it: VIKI

What is it, in summary?: A TV reporter, a prosecutor, and a police officer all have prophetic dreams, and they work together to try and stop the disasters they've foreseen. It's about 40% procedural and 60% family & romance.

What do you love about it?: This is one of those "love triangles" where they all genuinely care about each other, and the show really wants to smoosh them but can't because of the constraints of the medium. All three of them are earnestly good and determined to do what's right, they're dorky in different ways, and they've all been hurt in the past. The cases are clever and engaging, and the ensemble is just really warm and cosy and lovely. (The second lead played by Jung Hae In takes a couple of episodes to appear, but he is totally 1000% worth the wait. *points to icon*)

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: get-togethers, friendship fic, case fic, anything about the second lead getting a sense of belonging and being loved.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: No

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): references to suicide, one incident of off-screen animal harm, death of parents.

Dread Weight (Video Game)

[personal profile] sarriathmg 2024-10-19 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Title: Dread Weight (Video Game)

Media: Dating-sim-esque indie horror game

Approx length: YouTube playthroughs that include one complete game (not including exploring other routes and easter eggs) usually range between 1 hr 30 min to 2 hrs.

Where to find it: The full game can be bought on Steam, but there are also numerous playthroughs on YouTube in case you're like me, who is less interested in the game aspect and more interested in the story aspect.

What is it, in summary?: Technically a sequel to the indie horror game Cooking Companions, it focuses on a completely new cast of characters. The game features a new Player character who wakes up in a mysterious mansion and must decide on who to trust while an evil witch knocks on the door to handle unfinished business with the mansion's immortal host, Kurt.

What do you love about it?: The dating sim mechanics combined with horror and some very dark themes like mad science, immortality, cannibalism, and mind wipe. Has a lot of dark romance-esque tropes even though romance isn't the focus. It teases you with potential pairs (M/F, M/M, and F/F) with romantic involvements and ambiguous relationships. This might not be for you if you're into more "healthy" ships, but if you're like me, who is interested in darker themes in fiction such as control, manipulations, and sometimes outright torture, you might just enjoy it in the way that I do.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: shippy, smut, or horror. Ships between the F Player character with one of the male side characters, or M/M between the male side characters

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfill your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: I recommend just watching the whole playthrough, preferably a version where Dimitri survives till near the end. I personally put the video in the background while doing something else and had no problem following the story.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): gore/violence, cannibalism (not shown on screen), mad science/experiments, memory manipulation, human death, animal death (implied, not shown, and the animals appear as ghost characters), horror, torture, not actual rape but there are shoujo-typical incidents of characters acting rather rapey, themes of dictatorship and dystopias

Title: South Beach (TV 1993)

Media: TV Show

Approx length: 8 episodes, 45 minutes each

Where to find it: Internet Archive, YouTube

What is it, in summary?: Kate (Yancy Butler) is a con-woman pulling small-time jobs stealing from rich people in Miami. When her brother tangles with the Russian mob, she winds up in the crosshairs of a government agent named Roberts (John Glover) who offers her a keep-out-of-jail card by making her work for him. Eagle-Eye Cherry and Patti D'Arbanville have supporting roles.

What do you love about it?: I watched this back in the day and always loved the Kate/Roberts dynamic, which is full of banter and snark and delightful tension and mutual attempts at always keeping one step ahead of the other. Kate's street-smart and quick-witted and Roberts is a brilliant strategist, and it's a delight to watch them they work together and sometimes against each other and occasionally both at once. I also enjoy the show's 1990's flair – the glossy Miami society, the lightheartedness of it despite the seriousness of some of the cases.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Kate/Roberts shipfic. Tropey, romance, UST-filled, porny – any flavor is welcome.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): It's a 1990s show, so expect some period-typical stereotypes and attitudes.

Title:
Kneecap

Media:
movie

Approx length:
1 hour 45 minutes

Where to find it:
In the US it's only streaming on AppleTV, and it is out on DVD!

What is it, in summary?:
It's the mythic, wild-night-out kind of tall tale of a story about the origin of a group of Irish language rappers, and the way that language as personal identity and language as political identity and language as story and story as meaning intersect. It's also just a good time.

Movie trailer here:
https://youtu.be/FFYfp-hKxZQ?si=6SW4OS3h65XMTuGV

What do you love about it?:
It's funny and fierce and a story about telling stories, and it's a political articulation I think is really needed at this moment.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?:
Here's what I said in my letter - I'm obsessed with the way this movie is a myth, is a tall tale in a pub, is an emotional but not literal truth, and I'd love to see a story that wants to dig into that and plays with it a little. The movie is written like it's from Mo Chara's point of view, so maybe a story that looks at what it might look at if one of the others was telling it? JJ says he wanted to be a musician first, at that point when he tries to quit the band -- where does the story start if he's telling it, for example?

I'm also deeply into Georgia as a character, and her and Mo Chara's relationship based on mutual political kink -- if they try to figure out if there's more to it than that, what does that look like?

Really, I became deeply invested in this story very very fast, and if there's anything you've been feeling like writing about it, even if it has nothing to do with anything I've said, I'll probably be very into it just because it's more thoughts about this movie to chew on. I've also gone down a bit of a rabbit hole and listened to most of their interviews and seen the music videos, so if you want to pull any of that in for color/depth, it's all fair game. I had this bizarre vision the other day of the track "Harrow Road" off the new album getting adapted into a sequel movie to this one, so if you feel like getting epic-night-out about it, that's a thought.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?:
Not really!

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence):
Drug use, discussions of struggles with mental health, generational trauma

I'm also thinking about putting together a supplemental post of top interviews and music videos on my journal -- I'll link here if I do, and if you'd be interested in that, please hmu.

Bucchigiri?! ぶっちぎり anime

[personal profile] goodbadbaby 2024-10-21 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Title: Bucchigiri?! ぶっちぎり anime

Media: Anime

Approx length: It's one season, about 4.5h total runtime.

Where to find it: Crunchyroll is the distributor of the English sub and dub.

What is it, in summary?: Tomoshibi Arajin returns to his hometown and finds his new school is embroiled in a 3-way gang war. Arajin sees himself as more of a lover than a fighter, so he would rather not get involved in all that, but as it turns out, just about everyone else already is — including both his estranged childhood friend Matakara, the second-in-command of one of the three gangs, and the cutest girl in class, Mahoro, whose scary big brother Marito runs the second gang. After accidentally freeing a long-imprisoned genie named Senya, Arajin gains Senya's fighting abilities and quickly finds himself becoming very popular with the various gangs, but Senya has an agenda of his own, and a hidden past with another genie, Ichiya. The show is kind of like a fever dream you'd have after watching Aladdin too many times and bingeing three delinquent anime back-to-back.

Arajin and Senya; Arajin and Matakara

What do you love about it?: As a protagonist, Arajin ranges from a bit lame to downright grating, but if you're willing to laugh at his mishaps and maybe dig down under all that bravado, there's a lot to enjoy. His sole stated motivation is to lose his virginity (which, side note, if horny teenagers being horny grosses you out, then this may not be the show for you), so he latches onto Mahoro right away, but...

This is a show by Hiroko Utsumi, the director behind Banana Fish and Sk8 the Infinity, so you know it's gonna be full of guys being devoted to one another, and indeed, Bucchigiri does not disappoint in the shipping department. While Mahoro's only interested in manipulating him, just about every other guy in the show wants Arajin (carnally) because of the super-powered genie punch Senya's powers granted him. But Arajin doesn't want a bunch of guys drooling over him, or superpowers, or to be a "honki person" (approx. 'serious person', as far as any of us can tell) like he and Matakara swore to each other when they were little; he just wants to get laid. Along the way, though, he ends up accidentally finding out what's really important to him, and what it really means to get serious.

Marito; Ichiya and Senya

If you enjoy self-contained stories full of wacky characters, ride-or-die friendships, dramatic showdowns, gratuitously well-animated fight choreography, and an impressively hard-hitting tone shift from zany comedy into heartfelt emotional resolutions, Bucchigiri will not disappoint. (Also, the OP (watch on YouTube) and ED are both absolute bangers.)

Arajin and Mahoro; Matakara's friends Zabu and Komao

Content warnings: Cartoon violence ranging from slapstick to serious.

Title: The Great Cleric - broccoli lion

Media: Light novel but also manga and anime (the manga is good and close to the light novels, I can't watch the anime but I imagine it is, too)

Approx length: 20 volumes (but see below on this)

Where to find it: Light novel but basically anywhere you get ebooks for the ln and manga, I think the anime might be on crunchy?

What is it, in summary?: Isekai of an overworked salary man into a western style fantasy land where he has (theoretically) One Goal: don't die. He picks healing skills in his reincarnation process and gets started on this path! Theoretically he has a harem but it's the most G rated harem in the world. He collects more middle aged men. He's a straightforward, earnest type who isn't afraid of hard work. This naturally means he gets landed with world saving quests, to his great dismay.

What do you love about it?: it's funny and earnest. Slow paced light novels scratch a particular itch in my brain and oh boy does this hit that spot. Also I have brain worms for the teacher/mc ship.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: the teacher/student ship! But I do also like them non-romo if that suits you better

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: you very very much get enough for the teacher/mc from the first volume of the light novel, which takes about 2 hours to read.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): the setting has slavery and there is fantasy discrimination against beastfolk, there's a small amount of homophobia regarding an effeminate tailor character but given the author jokes about having created a harem of middle aged men for Luciel... It doesn't sting too much.

Media: Light novel and manga

Approx length: 12 volumes

Where to find it: light novel

What is it, in summary?: isekai, weak to strong with harem but the best girl for the mc is his goddess to whom he is very devoted (see the title).

What do you love about it?: I really love the interactions between the members of the harem, and everyone who is kind of completely insane and overpowered interacting with the mc who (as is typical in these stories) is completely convinced he is Extremely Normal and not doing anything special. (He is completely insane and not remotely normal.)

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: I've requested the rival character and the mc. I love their relationship and it genuinely almost seems like the rival has a romantic thing for the mc and I desperately want to see that explored given the setting means they both have multiple female romantic interests.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: probably volumes 1 and 2 and then 8 and 9 I think have flashbacks that involve sakurai, if poked I can probably come up with more certainty.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): nothing big off the top of my head

Title: 青春×機関銃 | Aoharu x Kikanjuu | Aoharu x Machinegun

Media: manga

Approx length: 18 volumes

Where to find it: wherever you get your ebooks

What is it, in summary?: sports manga where the sport is "war games" played with bb guns. Main character is mistaken for a guy and roped into playing on a team with two people who just so happen to live in her apartment complex, said team has a rule against having girls on the team so she's "stuck" crossdressing. The cast is insane. Just truly wild personalities.
A rundown of some faves:
  • previously mentioned main character who accidentally lets everyone think she's a guy for 90% of the series (my personal interpretation is she's non-binary)
  • a guy who can give another character a panic attack by starting a conversation (he is a pediatric doctor in his day job)
  • His masochist lackey nurse (I think he's a nurse anyway, I'd have to reread to check) who is into taking care of the doctor and being ignored
  • A bombshell nurse coworker who doesn't do feelings who devotes herself to him as well
  • Identical twins named haruki and haruka who have Issues
  • A gloomy introvert who is actually the successful manga-ka of a BDSM manga
  • His bff host boyfriend who has Trauma and is more likely to have a relationship with his toy gun than a human person

What do you love about it?: it's silly action packed fun with wild characters.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: I've requested the host with his abuser rival/antagonist.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: volumes 1 and 2 then 8 and 9. 8 and 9 have the important backstory.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): anime typical sibling incest vibes, a character getting clocked as not the gender they're presenting as, (toy) guns, severe mental health issues and panic attacks
