The Skeleton Twins (2014)

Title: The Skeleton Twins (2014)

Media: Film

Approx length: 93 minutes (1 hr 33 min)

Where to find it: Amazon Prime Video (renting, not sure about buying)

What is it, in summary: Milo and Maggie Dean—estranged twins—are forced back into each other’s lives after ten years of not seeing each other when Milo tries to kill himself and the hospital calls Maggie to let her know. This causes them to evaluate their choices and figure out how to move forward.

What do you love about it?: The realistic portrayal of siblings. I’m a twin myself, and I especially like the unnatural similarities between Maggie and Milo’s lives (re: the beginning of the movie), and although ‘Twins’ is literally in the title, there’s no focus on, like—okay, there is, but no one’s out there asking them if they can read each other’s minds like they do with my sister and I. Anyway. They’re snarky and they keep each other out of their lives, but at the end of the day, they really do care for each other, and that’s what I really love about this.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: Future fic. Or pre-canon backstory. Anything involving both Milo and Maggie.

Are there sections of canon (rather than the whole canon) that can be consumed by themselves to fulfil your requests, or that showcase particular characters and relationships?: Um. Not really, but it’s just the one movie.

Content warnings (ie, rape, incest, racism, gore/violence): Suicide is a huge overall theme of this movie. Both main characters attempt it. There is dubious consent at one point, and a plot point is about one of the main characters having been in a relationship with his English teacher when he was fifteen.
