FANDOM NAME: Der Himmel über Berlin | Wings of Desire (1987 film)
WHAT MAKES IT GREAT: This is a poetic, haunting, beautifully filmed story about Berlin and two angels who watch over it and its inhabitants. It’s in German, directed by Wim Wenders. The angels listen in on people’s thoughts, comfort the dying, hang out in the library a lot, and report particularly notable events to each other:
“And today on the Lilienthaler Chausee, a man, walking, slowed down and looked over his shoulder into space.”
“At the Zoo-U-Bahn station, instead of the station's name, the conductor suddenly shouted ‘Tierra del Fuego.’”
Peter Falk plays a supporting character, and he’s kind of playing...himself. Except not.
I love these angels and their longstanding relationship and their philosophical. The film touches briefly on their feelings about a sudden change in their relationship but there’s room for so much more. There are some great worldbuilding possibilities too.
WHERE CAN I FIND IT: Stream on HBOMax or The Criterion Channel, rent or buy on the usual suspects. You can buy a DVD used on Amazon for about $7-$8.
